I kind of laughed at this (sorry). Just funny that you said SDN isn't a good representation and then went ahead and asked on SDN anyways.

But yeah, like you said, it's hard to tell just from people posting. Best bet is to call their office and ask.

Okay, then if the office refuses to say or can't really estimate, then I don't think there is much more people here can tell you. I can make a list of people that have posted here about coming off the waitlist, though, if that helps. I'll go do that now. 🙂
 
Okay here's what I got after reviewing the last several pages of posts. I figured a count of people that withdrew their acceptance would be a better indicator of waitlist movement, so I included those as well. I didn't go through the entire thread, for obvious reasons, so I may have missed a few here and there. But I think I found most of them. Feel free to add yourself to the list.

For any who have asked earlier in the thread:

Orientation does indeed start on Friday, August 6th. White coat is that evening. Orientation then resumes from Monday, August 9th to Tuesday, August 10th. First day of class is Wednesday, August 11th.

Its been less than a week since the May 15th deadline. Still have plenty of time for waitlist movement.
 
Talked to the admissions office today, they said they arent seeing anywhere near the expected waitlist movement.

I gotta say, they are always very helpful and polite.

If last year is any indication, this thread should remain open until the beginning of August or so when school starts. It won't get shut down for a few more months. 🙂

so the facebook group has 114 members... i was under the impression that there are a little over a hundred spots in the class...does this mean the class is full??? what does everyone else think of this? im just trying to figure out if its time to start panicking 🙁

The facebook group contains a LOT of current UCI students as well as some alumni. I wouldn't use the number of members as an indicator of possible waitlist movement. However, since the interview season is over, I would say it's safe to assume that the class IS full at this point. But that doesn't mean people won't continue to withdraw and others pulled from the WL to fill their spots. That's what a waitlist is for.

question on semantics: if you are in the lower third of the alternate list, does that mean you are more closer to getting in or farther away from getting.

???? I thought the waitlist wasn't ranked. where did you hear this from?
 
There are thirds, top, middle, and lowest.
 
i just called the admission's office to ask a few questions. here's what i got, nothing really new.

there has been some movement on the waitlist thus far. the staff doesn't know exactly how much time the students are given to respond after they are accepted from the waitlist (so we can't approximate the days that the adcom goes to the waitlist after some students withdraw their acceptances). also, according to the office, the waitlist is not ranked. however, it seems otherwise from earlier posts.

Lower on the list = smaller chance at coming off

Hm, I wonder if this is new. There has never been mention of rankings by thirds - not in threads for last year's cycle or the year before. How did you find out about this?

wrong thread, did not mean to give everyone a scare. i was also just asking a question on semantics for a friend for another school.

Given the choice, I'd go SD probably. Its similar in weather and community and significantly better in research. Both are amazing schools though so its a win-win

thats gotta come from within yourself man, only you know what criteria in a school are most important to you. If you dont know, take a few days to actually think about what it is you are looking for in an a school. And its not just the school itself, its everything that comes with it (the area, the people, etc). Talk to current students from both schools as well and ask them questions that might shed light on certain aspects that are important to you. How many people on this site actually know enough about both schools to give you an accurate comparison? Very few.

GENERAL RULE 1: DO NOT listen to ANYTHING that a professor tells you to buy with out asking a second year med student. In my experience, most of what was said to be "essential" was absolutely not essential and Im very glad I didnt waste any money buying everything I was told to get.

GENERAL RULE 2: Do not ever, under any circumstances, break rule #1

First year courses:

Histology: BRS Histology - this book goes in to way more detail than you will be required to know for your school exams, but its a must have because it has everything you will need to know for the NBME test you take at the end of March. Study for your UCI exams with this book and you will do well on the tests and rock the shelf exam. If all you do is study powerpoints throughout the year, studying for the shelf exam will suck. The practical portion of histology you can study with via HistoTime, which is a program that will be passed around at the beginning of the year. I preferred using this website which worked really well. http://www.bu.edu/histology/m/index.htm

Biochemistry: No text is necessary, but a lot of people found Lippincot's biochemistry to be a useful reference. The quality of the core notes you get (this is true for pretty much every class) is highly variable. So its good to have a book as a source in case the core notes are poorly written. For some classes, like physiology, i stopped reading core notes all together and just read the book of my choice. For biochem, it was still really early in the year and its kinda hard at first to just ignore class notes and read on your own cuz its pretty intimidating, youll think that you are somehow missing something important (not true). Its the same material, just worded nicely and organized in a coherent fashion that is easy to learn (as opposed to some core notes, which are a mess). If I were to take biochem over again, I would just study from Lippincotts, make sure that what I'm reading is overlapping with what they are teaching by looking at the ppts so that you ensure you are appeasing the powers that be and that you will pass the test, and ignore the core notes. Not every professor has poorly written core notes, but youll very quickly and easily learn which ones have their act together and which ones are scatterbrained/concerned with their research more than their teaching responsibilities.

Immunology: No text necessary. The professors core notes are very thorough, its basically like a book itself. Know these and you will pass/do well.

Physiology: BRS Physiology and Costanzo's Physiology are must haves. Similar to histology, study with these sources throughout the year and you will pass all of your UCI exams and you will rock the NBME exam at the end of the year. The recommended book for the course is WAY to large and way too detailed - don't get it. A number of students just studied with Costanzo the entire year as opposed to going to lecture or reading core notes, and we all did great in the course. They are even considering making Costanzo the required course text.

Anatomy:

Leonard's Gross Human Anatomy - you absolutely must have this book. Written by the professor who directs the course, it will be your bible and you will need to know every word.

Netters Atlas - don't waste money on the book. There is a super sweet computer program that is the same as the book and its 3000x easier to use and find information. The program is free and itll be passed around once anatomy starts. If for whatever reason youd prefer flippping through a book, then get the book. You must have either the program or the book.

Rohan's Color Atlas - Unlike Netters, which has drawn pictures, this has pictures of cadavers that have been dissected...definitely not necessary because you can just go see the cadavers in lab, but I found it a very useful tool and worked as a substitute for going in to the lab (i hated going in to lab so did so as little as possible)

Genetics: The required text is well written and interesting to read, but for the purposes of the class its a waste of money.

Epidemiology: This course is pretty terrible. It only lasts two weeks and is right before winter break and was just pretty poorly taught in general. Youll learn everything youll need to know for the course, and more importantly, for the boards, if you just get a hold of "Appleton and Lange's Epidemiology and Biostatistics for the USMLE." Theres a copy floating around I think.

Neuroscience: the recommended textbook, Blumenfield, is well written but I dont think its essential. Altho I liked reading it and I found it pretty helpful.


Clinical Foundations: They are going to try and pressure you in to buyin all these books - dont do it. They told us "If you don't buy these books, you will fail." They'll try and get you to buy this medical interview book i forget what its called but its about talking to patients and what not - its all common sense. Dont buy it. Theyll also try and get you to buy Bate's Physical Exam book - there are two versions, a Big Bates and a Baby Bates. Baby Bates is basically an outline, pocket version of Big Bates. Big Bates IS NOT necessary. Some people liked it, but if you are going for what is essential to have, all you need is that Baby Bates and you are golden. They are also gonna try and make you by an ophthalmoscope for like 180 bucks. You are gonna use it once your entire year and when you are tested at the end of the year for the physical exam they will have ophthalmoscopes in the rooms for you to use - clearly its not necessary for you to have your own. Obviously you are going to need a stethoscope at some point in your medical career. Littman will be there at the beginning of the year offering you guys deals so pretty much everyone buys one of those. I'm cheap with money so pretty much bought nothing unless it was proven to be essential...I ended up buying a different stethoscope later on in the year for a cheaper price, and its a better stehthoscope. So i dunno.


LASTLY - this is just one person's opinion. I feel like a lot of the books I mentioned will be agreed upon as essential (BRS Histo, BRS Physio, Leonard, Netters, Costanzo), but the other stuff youll find variability when talking to each person. The cool thing about med school is that you aren't going to find one person in your class that does it the same way. You'll find your way, and it will work for you. Get opinions from as many people as you can but then figure out which way works best for you. Its arguably the hardest thing youll have to do first year, but you'll figure it out. Everyone does.
