Is there a difference between being on the waitlist and being selected as an alternate? 😳

i think it's the same thing.

did anyone else receive the e-mail saying that you're selected as an alternate, and if you wish to remain on the alternate list you have to fill out the form and e-mail it back to them?

Do we need to fill out any forms right now to get housing.

I remember talking to my interview host and my student interviewer and they both told me there were some issues with housing last year. Do any current med students or prospective students know if the issues have been resolved? I know they are suppose to open a new graduate housing building this fall, but i dont know if that completely solved the problem.

I am asking because I am deciding between graduate housing and off campus housing and have to make a decision within a few weeks (need to tell my roommate if I am staying with him), so any info is greatly appreciated.

Also is there a big $ discrepancy between the two options? RySerr21 I know you are awesome about saving $, so any input you can give is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Pretty sure you can apply for housing now. I talked to students at second look who were already securing spots in the new grad building. I'm not applying for on-campus housing, so I'm not 100% sure about the process, but I would just contact Student Housing directly and ask.

As far as cost, living on campus would definitely be cheaper if you choose one of the less expensive buildings to stay in. And even the more expensive buildings might even out considering that rent includes all utilities, some are furnished, and you wouldn't need to spend any money on gas since you're within walking/biking/shuttle distance.

How much do you pay now at your place with your roommate? If you want to compare cost, go here: http://www.housing.uci.edu/rates_nextyear.asp

Anyone else confused about the alternate list email.

Do we:

a.) reply via-email and print out the form, fill it out, and mail it in to UCI.

b.) fill out the form as a word doc. then send it back via email as an attachment (usually schools don't like attachments)?

It doesn't tell you what to do on the form?

From what I remember doing last year, I think I emailed it back to them and got a confirmation shortly after.

zebalong, the directions are very simple. Just follow directions!

lol I must be an idiot right now. I don't have MS Word so I can't type on the form to save and attach or copy and paste it back into the email... I can only print it right now. When i get to work ill try and do it.

The directions are simply: "If you wish to be remain on the Alternate List, please complete the attached form. Reply via e-mail to the Office of Admissions and Outreach at [email protected] by June 7, 2010."

When i first read it I thought i was to reply via email if i wanted to stay on the list, then follow it with a mailed completed form.

The form doesn't say to either fill out and mail back, fill out save as a file and email back, or copy and paste the form into the email and fill out the form... i must be overthinking this...

I promise guys, if i get into UCI im really not this "challenged"- at least not most of the time.

for sure the cheapest way to live would be in the cheapest housing available on campus, which I think is Verano. I think its like 500 a month or something crazy. Its not fournished and i think you have to pay for other stuff too, but still will end up being the cheapest living situation youll be able to find. You can definitely fine off campus housing of comparable pricing to the other housing options on campus, but if you are looking to save as much money as possible then living in Verano would be the way to go.

I think I completed mine and sent it back as an attachment, but I don't think they would care if you copy/pasted it into the body of the email either. If they did, they would've specified. So do whatever is easiest for you. 🙂

Yeah they're as straight forward as they can possibly be. They don't even give you a physical address anywhere in the email or attached document to mail it to.

And unless you mess up really bad during the interviews, you're placed in the alternate pool and everyone on the alternate pool gets this email

has any1 been rejected from the alternate list (did not receive the email)?

i dont think they ever reject anyone post interview....you just wont be pulled off the alternate list

one more thing in terms of books - I'd hold off on buying them. You'll get about 300 emails from upper classmen trying to sell you there books and often times they are a lot cheaper than what youd get on amazon. That, and you can find a lot of the books electronically for free. For example I never bought a BRS physio, I just printed out the electronic copy.

I'm wondering what the purpose of this alternate list email was coming so late after May 15th

It's sent out every year - a way for them to narrow down the WL to people who are actually still interested in the school. Last year, the email was sent out around early/mid May. Guess they were just a little late this year for whatever reason.

Haven't gotten a confirmation after it took me a ridiculous amount of time to fill out my alternate list form (which i still feel idiotic for) 3 days ago. Anyone got a confirmation after they sent it in?

I was wondering the same thing. I sent mine in within an hour upon receiving it and haven't heard anything but I'm sure they got bombarded with a ton of emails this week.

The class is indeed full, UCI does overaccept a bit.

That being said - UCI has a lot of WL movement although I did hear this year was a bit slower than most.

(This is coming from a friend who just withdrew).

admissions plays a pretty secretive game......thats true for med school admissions in general, not just UCI. They give us a glimpse of the process here and there and maybe some insight into how they do things, but for the most part its a mystery. If I were to go ask someone a specific question about waitlist movement theres no way I would get a direct answer. Plus, waitlist is movement is always so variable, theres no way they could tell when more people would be pulled off the waitlist. There can't be like a set date or anything -its dependent on accepted applicants. There might be no more movement at all, i dunno.

For those of you still anxiously waiting -- this thread has been pretty dead, giving the impression that not a lot of WL movement is happening... but according to the facebook group, people are definitely getting off the list and joining the class. Figured I'd throw that out there to give you all a bit of hope. 🙂

Good news is there's WL movement. Bad news is, it's not one of us.

Just got accepted from the wiatlist! there is movement! good luck!

Congrats Everyone!
I just sent in another update letter. Hopefully I can get into UCI!

Accepted earlier today! Still can't believe it 😱😱😱 Definitely will be attending this Fall

Wooooot!! Congrats dude I was rooting for you. 🙂 Join the FB group if you have an account. Posts about housing and roommates and stuff might be useful if you're relocating. Congrats again. See you in the fall.

Can a current student talk about white coat sizes? The form says M is 38-40 and L is 42-44. What do those numbers mean. What sizes do most people have?

I asked about those numbers. They are suit jacket sizes for men. I'm a 38R for suits so I picked medium.

I don't know how that translate to women's sizes though.

Yeah no idea here either. I just picked small because that's almost always what I am in lab coats and such. A hint for the very petite women out there -- I was told that you should still get the S and not the XS. The XS apparently comes with very TINY pockets that aren't going to be able to fit your reference books, pens, stethoscope, or whatever else you need during rotations. If the coat ends up fitting a little looser, that will probably be a good thing in winter when you might wanna wear sweaters around the hospital. And you can just hem or roll up the sleeves if necessary.

Ok I found a nice women's ---> men's size conversion chart for jackets. It says:

Men's 32 = Women's 4
Men's 34 = Women's 6
Men's 36 = Women's 8
Men's 38 = Women's 10
Men's 40 = Women's 12
Men's 42 = Women's 14
Men's 44 = Women's 16

Most of the girls in the class tend to wear XS small coats. I have never bought an article of clothing that had an XS on it, so i was surprised by my coat fitting, but if you tend to buy medium/large shirts from Forever 21 or other junior/female retailers, you should be good with an XS (even after multiple washes and runs through the dryer. Many of the guys wear size small (if you generally wear medium-sized shirts) or medium coats, very few order Large.

Most people will overestimate/underestimate their sizes which translates into opportunities for you to exchange your white coats (as they aren't personally embroidered) and get to know your new classmates. Hope this helps.

Crap..i think i might have overestimated...the paper asked how you want your name to appear on the coat? Did i read something wrong?

Hmm they must have started offering names on the coats this year from the beginning. Originally no one had names on their coats, but then someone in our class put together a fund raiser for his organization selling name embroideries on the white coats. Not everyone in our class has it, but maybe they are trying to make it that way for your class?

It said how you want your name to appear on the program, not the coat.

Sounds like I may have overestimated, as I ordered a large. I haven't bought anything size M in years, so we'll see if it's too big. Are the larger sizes bigger in all dimensions or just wider around the chest/shoulders?

I believe it asked how you wanted your name to appear in the program for the white coat ceremony.

Does anyone know what our schedule is like for the thanksgiving holiday? Do we only get Thanksgiving off or the day before as well? Also do we have the time to go home and not come back till Sunday night?

Thanks!

Last year we were offered a "present" (i.e. the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday was the first day of our break). The break extended until the Sunday, so you wouldn't need to come back until Sunday night. There will probably be some sort of exam scheduled for that week (probably on Monday or Tuesday) however I suggest waiting until you receive the schedule at Orientation to schedule travel plans. If we find out otherwise, we'll be sure to post.

Hey everyone, does anyone know the minimum grade required to remain in good standing for matriculation for prerequisite course credits that are still pending post-acceptance? Thanks in advance.

I think you're okay as long as you get a C or better, but I would double check with the school to be safe.
