For those of you who don't get secondaries immediately don't worry. UCLA does take their time!

I've got the secondary. I'm OOS, does UCLA accept many OOS students?

In terms of matriculation, about 20% of students are from OOS.

which is pretty good, considering UCSD only has 10%. Technically UCSF and UCLA don't give preference to in-state.

wait, so we can talk about awards/honors/achievements from high school in these essays?

i dont see why not...a matriculating student did...so id say its good.

It says scholastic honor, buddy. I doubt Counter-Strike counts as a scholastic honor.

I haven't looked at the UCLA website, but why do the posts here with the UCLA prompts not use/contain the specific adjective scholastic for the receiving an "honor" question? I must be missing something in the directions.

I see... thanks.

Submitted this one. Does anybody know if there is a complete email, or if the button under LOR on the status page goes away?

Didn't get a confirmation email, and the LOR button may go away when they receive them?

Mine just says received for secondary and requested for LORs.

Question 4. What is the ONE most important honor you have received? Why do you view this as important?

For this one, I assume honor = award?

Yeah.

Hey everyone,

I will be starting at UCLA this year. If you guys have any questions about the application process or interviews and logistics of getting to UCLA (I know how to get from the airport to UCLA for a dollar!) feel free to spend me a PM. Good luck to all!

I just wanted to piggyback on Ganesha123's comment, and offer not only assistance, but a word of encouragement. I found out that I got into the Drew/UCLA Class of 2013 just weeks ago. I was all set to move to DC, and then I received word. If I can do it.... Hopefully I'll see you next year at Drew/UCLA!!

do you apply through drew seperately on amcas? Ishould have added that if so i didnt even think about it.

Just wondering, for the requirements, if you plan to complete certain ones in the future, do you just check no for now?

What types of activities are non-academic activities? Does that include laboratory work stuff? Or is it something like sports, music...etc.? Does it include shadowing?

i'd say all of those would count. i was going to talk about my work as a tutor/teacher, but now i'm starting to realize that, even though it doesn't involve MY academics, it's still an academic activity. what do you guys think?

i was going to write about tutoring also.lol

i figure as long as you didn't get paid for it, it was volunteer work. maybe i'll call monday to see if tutoring counts as non-academic? i have a feeling it won't. laaame.

I already wrote an essay on tutoring for non-academic. I mean, it is a service type of activity.

i think honor can be interpreted liberally. anything that is "an honor to receive". i wrote about acceptance into an honor society

hey tigerpaws, i know a really cool classmate you'll have next year 🙂 pm me for the name

I haven't completed some of these courses yet, but plan to during my senior year. Should I put "yes" or "no" to these, because they have no question addressing planned coursework.

go ahead and put yes...it is fine as long as you have it done before matriculating

I posted this in the Drew/UCLA thread by accident, but...

Question about the honor essay: I have a sort of unconventional honor...I was inducted into an engineering honor society (which about 10% of engineering majors at my school are eligible for), but I have since switched majors from engineering. However, the honor itself is still somewhat meaningful because I have taken tons of engineering/math classes that really contribute to how I think and approach problems, and my research is in a medical-chemical engineering lab. But I don't exactly "deserve" this honor anymore since it is supposed to be just for engineering majors...

if its meaningful to you, and you can explain why (hard work, etc..), then it should be just fine.

is the hardship question sort of an obligatory "optional" type question or do most people leave it blank?

i took 4 years of spanish in high school and passed the ap test, but since i didnt take spanish in college i have to put No for Spanish in the secondary right?

yah. Everyone takes hs spanish for 4 years lol. Especially in cali.

Can a dilemma that we encountered at work be considered a problem in my life?

haha i kind of knew that but it just sucks lol ap exams really didnt do anything good at all

Well, it was kind of like a work incident. I just thought that when they list problem in your life, it is supposed to be something more personal.

If I wrote about depression in a close family member under the "hardship" question, would it be a bad idea to talk about a cutting incident under "problems?" I don't want the admit committee to start thinking I'm crazy.

you mean like cutting your own wrists? I would avoid it like a madman.

What I was told over the phone is that the AP test + 1 semester of college = okay to put Yes. If you haven't taken it at all in college, put No.

haha you can say tau beta pi... everyone knows what it is. anyway, it's a lifetime membership, so yeah, even if you switched majors you still "deserve" it since you earned it at some point.

Does the 800-character limit apply to major paid work experience too?

... Just kidding. Yes it does.

Can you use honors or problems from high school to write about? I wasn't clear about that and I haven't really had any problems or honors in college...

If I havent received a secondary yet does that mean I was denied?

I submitted AMCAS 6/22 and was verified 7/9.

I think the general answer to this, for any essay, is the: the more recent, the better. But, if you can't think of anything, then feel free to use an older example. My life problem was from high school, but I think the example is strong enough that it was worth using.

Definitely you can write about high school stuff. I did that and I guess it worked out 🙂

I would wait. They're probably still reading applications.
