Anyone know how open UCSD is to letters of interest/intent for waitlisted people? It sounded like there could be a lot of waitlist movement, anyone else get that feeling?

I talked to Brian about this and he said to not send in letters of intent / interest ("because you took the time and effort to come interview here, we already know you're interested in our school"). He did say you could send in updates (but limit them to only one or two updates) but your getting off the waitlist will be based mostly on what was already in your file.

waitlisted via email =/. interviewed 1/4/10.

rejected today pre-secondary via email. OOS. have fun in SoCal, y'all

Just got off the phone with Brian; couldn't wait any longer... ACCEPTED. Woohoo. Interviewed 1.4.10. Good luck to everyone.

from earlier in the thread:

hey does anyone know approximately how many people get off the waitlist at UCSD?

40-80. I'm right there with you. There are something like 400 people put on the list out of the 600 that interview. I know those chances sound ridiculously slim, but remember that UCSD accepts approximately 50% of those they interview... so the rest kind of just drop off the list because they don't want UCSD anymore.

:luck:!

Interesting. Anybody else?

I sent an update like Jan 4 to the md/phd office, never got any form of response.

yesterday got my pre-interview rejection. bummer.

Sigh.. waitlisted also. Even though the waitlist chances are very slim at UCSD, won't lose hope!

10-20% of waitlisted people getting accepted? I hardly call that slim... esp considering the initial chance of being accepted is <10% from the start. chin up!

For those of you with late interviews, I was originally scheduled for 4/5 but asked to be notified if they had any last-minute cancellations. Just got rescheduled for next week, TWO MONTHS earlier. It's worth a shot emailing them if you don't want to wait that long.

Are they still giving out interviews? and how long are they giving them out for? I would LOVE to interview at SD. I already sent in an update and a love letter. Not planning on sending anything else for now....pre-interview hold since late september.

I'm in the same boat. I think they are still handing out invites, but I'm not really holding out much hope, I think it's a rejection for me and they might send me the letter any time now.

You know, i'm kinda the same too. At the beginning of the cycle I was extremely stoked that I even got a secondary from them. My stats are not on as high as their average so I thought it was pretty much a miracle. The only reason I'm holding on to hope is that a friend of mine got an interview with the same exact MCAT score (which is pretty much the weakest part of my app). But honestly though, if I don't get love from them soon, its cool. I can live with that 🙂

got an email from the adcom today.

they said that for those of us on hold for an interview, a decision should be made in around two weeks.

Same for me. With them scheduling interviews in April and with me still being on hold, the chances are very very slim. I have a friend who goes here - she's not crazy about the school but LOVES the weather.

Well, the sky did cry for like two weeks after the Chargers lost, but I honestly can't think of anywhere else I'd rather live than SoCal except perhaps certain Caribbean islands.

why isn't she crazy about the school, do you know?

hmmm I didn't get this email. I also checked my status page in case I've already been rejected but it hadn't changed. Oh well, its good to know 🙂 I'm ready SD...bring it on!

Yeah, I didn't get such an email either.

According to boring people, nothing exciting happens at UCSD. There's no football team, half the undergrad are pre-med/engineering, and La Jolla is full of rich geriatrics. Cost of living is somewhat high, although there's no shortage of actual rooms to live in since there's apartment complexes everywhere.

Then again, there's the beaches, a playhouse right in UCSD, many many research institutions, tourist areas, and La Jolla is next to San Diego which has an exciting downtown w/ clubs, museums, theaters, shops, etc.. The crime rate in La Jolla and San Diego is low.

Oh, and you can get earthquakes, tornados, wildfires, and floods all in one place.

Academically, it's a research institution with MANY hospitals in the area. UCSD is a superb burn/trauma center right next to the Scripps Green Hospital and the Scripps Research Institute. In San Diego there's like 1000 hospitals with or without ER, private and not-for-profit. 125 miles up from San Diego you'll find LA.

thanks morsetlis!!

i live in LA currently, so i'm pretty familiar with SD and love it. i was a little curious about any complaints the students might have that are related to the school/program itself. do you know anything about that?

I heard this complaint many many times about Irvine before starting undergrad at UCI and I still don't understand it. People who can really find nothing to do either have no friends or no imagination. Its true that there really isn't that much IN irvine but there is disneyland nearby, tons of malls, food, parks, newport, laguna etc. SD is GORGEOUS. and there is tons to do nearby! my friends and I have driven down to La Jolla and SD randomly with a gps navigator and lost ourselves for an entire day exploring different beaches and old town SD. Like you said, only boring people should find it boring.

this email was a personal reply to an email i had sent them asking them about my status. you wouldn't have gotten it.

good to know. I thought it was a mass email that they decided not to send me since they're planning on rejecting me lol. I wish us all the best in the coming two weeks!

I'm so ready for all this crap to be over!

Yeah, this one is the only school left that I would go to interview on at this point.

This is one of two schools that I would interview at at this point. the other being Loma Linda cause its close to home and I have no problem with the religious flavor. I also have several friends at the dental school who tell me its MUCH more laid back than it seems. Anyways, good luck BlueElmo!

Yeah me too, maybe Loma Linda, I'm not too sure though. But UCSD is a LONG shot for me. Good luck to you.

Has anyone created a Facebook group for UCSD accepted students?

I'm a nervous wreck. (Not really.)

I can't believe my mentor told me to take a Valium before the interview, though...

Alright guys, I made a Facebook group for accepted students.

On Facebook search: UCSD School of Medicine Class of 2014.

Look forward to seeing everyone.
Cheers!

i can legitimately see that being a decent idea for certain people.

only if they have a prescription of course 😉

Hi all,

I am from Vegas...received an interview invite back in November and scheduled it for March (earliest they had available). I am wondering what my chances are, realistically, of being accepted given my OOS status. I originally applied MD-PhD, but I was offered an MD interview. I really like what the school has to offer (both in clinical opps and research), and of course, the location doesn't suck at all 😉

I am thinking that my chances might be better if I move my interview up a bit...I read that someone else asked if there were any cancellations and got an earlier interview. Best of luck to everyone still waiting!!! I know it's a treacherous journey, this application process... Hang in there; it's not over till it's over!! 🙂

Yeah, me too. Only ones I haven't heard from that I'd actually go to interview: UVA, Mount Sinai, Dartmouth, UCSD, UC Irvine, (not including the quadruple reach schools like stanford and harvard - why did I even do those secondaries? lol)

At least harvard had no essay (unless you did HST), but stanford was ridiculous.

Stanford and Harvard interviewed me but I've received no love from any UC.

Goes to show all of us how hard UC's play.

It doesn't really make sense. Stats look amazing for UC's and obviously there was a Harvard interview. AND the person is a CA resident.

Maybe red flags in the LORs?

Or maybe it's because of MSTP.

I just did it for the sake of saying I applied, haha. The secondary was kind of long and I was really burned out by then. Oh well.
