May I ask if your acceptance is post-interview or you were taken off hold? I am waiting for a post-hold decision here, and I am not sure when to expect it! I have heard only theories, not actual dates.

I completely agree. I am a little worried about this gunner stereotype. But I love Gainesville and UF and just hope our class will be awesome.

Congratulations on your acceptance! You will love UF COM! Where did you go to undergrad?

My friend is a 4th year at UF COM, I asked her about the gunners. She said that is totally false. Everyone in the class works together to help others to succeed! She knows pretty much everyone in her class very well. Alot of kids study together. Don't worry you will love it.

I have gone to UF undergrad and have loved every minute. I would love to be pulled of the waitlist. Wish me luck!

Thanks...I went to UF undergrad but was not pre-med. I graduated with a accounting degree in 06.

I've heard the complete opposite from friends who are 4th, 3rd and 1st years. To each his own, and UF produces phenomenal doctors, but the people I know (at least) haven't exactly enjoyed their experiences from what I've heard. A lot of people have told the same stories and word gets out. To me, where there's smoke, there's fire so I'm apt to believe that there are more gunners than your average school. There are also a lot of really cool kids that I know there too, so don't worry. UFCOM is a terrific school but like I said, I don't think you can simply refute many people's assertions.

Well, it is the College of Medicine, of course there will be some amount of competition and of course it will be difficult, but that is why UF COM is known for the quality physicians they produce. 🙂 I don't think you can stereotype the kids there and call them gunners.

Although I am concerned about "gunners" I think that the truth has to lie between the myth of "everyone is totally chill" and "everyone is a crazy gunner. My bigger concern is the curriculum. Does anyone know what the class schedule is like? How about the test schedule? And is it still A/B/C/Fail?

From what I think my friend who is in second year said, the classes run from 8AM til around 4pm in the same classroom with an hour lunch break. Correct me if this is wrong. OOOO actually, here's the first year curriculum: http://medinfo.ufl.edu/year1/

And I'm pretty sure that you still get letter grades. 😳

Best of luck to people who really loves UF (^_^) :xf:

That's a lot of class (about 8 hours a day). When do students here find enough time to study? Do they learn a lot during class compared to other schools? Are there courses with optional attendance?

It is true about class all day, my ex is a first year and she is always busy. Studying is after dinner at 5:30pm until around 10:30, also in the morning before lecture. Then repeat, unless they just got done with a block exam, if a block exam is near then every waking sec is spent studying 😉 This is to be near the top of the class though... The more she tells me the more scared I become that I will have little time to socialize, but some part of me still wants to stay in gville. As for attendance, it is usually mandatory in a since you will not do well if you don't show up! They have audio recordings of the lecture, but not video... I have heard some people can learn from listening to lectures but I wouldn't recommend it if you want to be on top.

That sounds pretty crappy. Any current students care to comment?

Just got an e-mail from UF with one of the first words being "accepted". I freaked out for a second, but then after some careful reading, saw that Denise in admissions accepted a position in the Office of Medical Education.

No decision has been made on me yet.

They got me good!

Ahh me too Takeme! Too bad Denise is leaving, she seemed to always know what was going on and was extremely helpful. Im concerned about 8 hrs of class a day, that is the most pure lecture time ive heard of.

Look for the on-hold decisions to be released tomorrow. If not, then early next week. Good luck!

Really? I hope you're right! Did someone in admissions que you in on this?

Oh and do you know if they will notify via e-mail or we have to wait for snail mail?

This doesn't sound fun...Makes for a loooong day.

I was told "keep an eye on your email" and we'd know "very soon, could very well be tmrw."

at UF today. thats the latest update and thats what the deal is. i know there have been different answers but the decisions have supposedly been made and now it's a matter of communicating them out apparently.

Btw I probably heard after you went in, it was just before they closed.

Haha...I am currently living with 2 UF COM 1st years, and I'm pretty sure it's not as bad as you're making it sound. I'm not going to pretend that everybody in the class of 125-130ish people are practically like family - from what I understand there are social/study circles within the class which makes perfect sense given the class size. You're going to have a pretty broad range of personality types in that group of people. The only thing close to a gunner I've heard about is people who ace the exams and claim not to study - which is a simple translation from the pre-med type. I will say this though, I think UF COM is more competitive than say...SUNY Buffalo where they told us they didn't rank the class (doubt that - they have to at least have thirds like their waitlist ) because they don't have letter grades. UF COM does have letter grades for the most part, so that might contribute to the impression that it's very competitive. And one thing that I have heard from my room mates is that in general the class is pretty smart and beating the average can be tough - but it's medical school and I think it's going to be tough anywhere.

Thanks for the perspective and congrats on your acceptance.
I was just wondering what the consensus is here. If given the choice between going to a solid school or a great school (let's just say UF and say...Vanderbilt, cost aside), would there ever be benefit in going to the slightly less competitive school where it's slightly easier to beat the class average or is it better to go to the great school where you'd probably be below the average just based on the slightly higher caliber, even though the name of the school may be a little better? And what if there's a wider gap, say USF vs. Emory?
Sort of the big fish/small pond vs. small fish/big pond type scenario...would it ever pay off to finish closer to the top of your class at the lesser school (and I don't mean lesser as a knock at all since pretty much every med school in the country is terrific)?

Personally, I'm just deciding where to attend based on where I feel is the best fit for me, but my friend was discussing this with me the other day and I was wondering if there's any relevance to this?

Thanks - I think the best answer to your question is going to come from students at those schools. I don't know if you can predict whether it's going to be easier or harder to beat the average depending on which school you go to - after all pretty much everyone is smart. A lot of it depends on the curriculum developers at the school to. Certain programs might just keep increasing test difficulties if the average is too high (just like in undergrad) whereas others will keep them outright difficult. I wouldn't be surprised if some top 10 school has an easier program than a solid state school. The trouble is that the perspective you get will depend on the student, and while top 10 schools attract pretty bright students, it doesn't mean their top 10 status is based on the difficulty of their program. I honestly haven't thought too much about it.

When it comes to applying for residencies, I think residency directors know most of the schools in the country and what kind of students they get from there. At the end of the day, they will probably judge you based on previous groups of students who are coming through from your program. It's the whole applying to med school from a top 10 versus a state school debate. I don't think it's going to matter a whole lot - all medical schools pretty much teach the same thing anyways, the only difference is your class mates and the experiences you get in school.

Today is my birthday so it would be nice to get some good news. I don't want to get my hopes up because someone on this forum said that they were not updated on their "on hold" status until May last year.

Also, when I called the office two days ago they told me that we would be updated on our status at the beginning of May. I don't know what to believe!

I called yesterday and talked to Chet and he's the one that told me "very soon" which he say may end up being today. He told me that they had just delivered the decisions to the desk as I had called and that it was late in the day and they didn't think they'd be able to get to them yesterday.

Well then, today or Monday it is I suppose. Now I'm nervous!!!

If anyone hears today...definitely let the rest of us know =) Thanks to everyone for checking in with the office to see when we will find out. Fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone who is on hold and waiting! It has been tough!

Does anybody else know anything about the upcoming second look event? Denise mentioned it in her farewell email, but did they ever send out info about the dates, events planned, etc? I'd like to book a flight there before it becomes a bit too expensive.

Thanks. I have been obsessing over my e-mail. Sigh.

So I just called the admissions office and was informed that they had some, but not all, of the admissions decisions and that they would start getting those decisions out in the next day or two and that it would take a week or so before everyone on hold knows their status. I know many people have called/gone in and been told slightly different things. I'm not sure which answer is correct but I thought I'd let everyone know. Good luck!

I wonder who they are notifying first, accepted applicants or just random.

I really wish we'd hear sooner rather than later, especially when the word is so mum/crossed up on what the actual deal is but at least it seems within a week we'll all know something.

They sent out a full email about it. May 6th-9th. You need to RSVP by calling the OMA [(352) 273-6656] by the end of today.

Yeah that has been my only complaint about this process in general. If admissions people would just be more straightforward then it would make this process so much less nerve wracking!

I never received an email describing the open house/second look event. Did anyone else never receive an email about it? I would like to go, but not sure I am going to be able to make it (living in DC right now). Do you think it makes a difference if you go if you are on "hold" ??

I called in today and spoke with Chet. He said that 14 names were chosen from the on-hold list and these acceptances were delivered yesterday via e-mail. For those of us still waiting, he advised for us not to obsess considering that most of us won't hear until the wondrous May 15th passes. 🙁

So, apparently there are two facets of second look, the official one from the admissions office, and one put on by the OMA to run in conjunction with the official one. The official second look is Friday night and Saturday morning. I don't imagine attending would make a difference for those on hold, but I have no clue how the admissions office works.

This guy a troll?

I am hold too and didn't get an invite. Maybe only accepted students are invited

Nope, confirmed. They only accepted 14, they may accept a few more in the next few days, but the majority of us will be on the waitlist.

This is pretty unbelievable considering the previous correspondence I've had with the admissions office. I was under the mpression most of us were on hold, ad about 60% of us would be accepted off hold and the other 40% would be waitlisted.

This is clearly not reflective of that number. Annoying, but I guess part of the ridiculous torture that is admissions.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 🙁 (in response to the troll comment- to whom that was directed, I'm still confused) but I interviewed back in October, was put on hold in December, and was also under the impression that a lot of us would be accepted before mid-May. Congrats to those who were accepted & for those of us waiting, let's hope for great movement on the wait-list!:xf:

When I called the admissions office, they acted like I was crazy when I said that I was told the majority of acceptances would be made around this time and that most people on hold will get in or waitlisted. I feel like the Dean was so adament about saving seats until the end to be fair, maybe I am crazy.....?? They said 14 spots were saved/filled yesterday, and he would not expect there to be many more until May 15th. 🙁
