They just updated their twitter---

"This time of year is exciting & difficult--great applications but also the time when we have to start to close some files--tough decisions!

Please don't close me Michigan!!!!!!

I am an sdner and I have a MDapp account. I interviewed at UM on 8/28. I haven't put that in my MDapp yet...I just cant figure out how to work with thee MDapp. I guess I will stop updating it unless someone show me how to do so...

What I am trying to say is, there are always exceptions.:luck:

very true, but I just figured MDApps would give some sort of guideline (prob better than scanning through the whole thread because (a) that's time-consuming, and (b) lots of people choose not to post that they have interviews).

I emailed and asked admissions what the criteria for auto invite, their response:

"We consider MCAT, GPA, and our Director's discretion"

Hmm..so its not all just computer, they do somewhat review your file. Is that bad news for kids with high MCAT, GPA, but no auto?

That's interesting. And it seems to happen; I do know some one who got an automatic before the secondary was even submitted with a 3.96/35. Great GPA obviously, but not your 38 cutoff. Just a little food for thought, I suppose.

Still, I don't think it's bad news. It's still pretty early! Anything can happen.

Has anyone done/got this fun facts email? I'm not sure what to put. Maybe people that have gone to the interview could give me some idea of what they're looking for. Is it just supposed to be something kind of funny and interesting just as an ice breaker? Or do they seem to use it at least partly to evaluate you and if you put something non-academic(ish), you'll look ridiculous?

Maybe I'm thinking too much into it, but I don't want to write something like "I can recite the opening monologue to Star Wars from memory" (I can't, just a random example), and everyone else has something like "I can speak 9 languages" or "I can perform a triple bypass" and everyone in the room is thinking "What an idiot" in regards to me.

The fun facts are not at all applied to your application decision. They're simply shared with other interviewees on your interview date to help people get to know each other. At my interview, fun facts ranged from "Can play x musical instrument" to "Can play x number of sports" all the way to "Can brew excellent beer". Be yourself. 👍

It is just used for ice-breaking purpose.
Ok, so I wrote I can tell a joke and one of my interviewers did ask about that. But for most of the time, it really doesnt matter, take it easy.

Thanks a lot guys. That's what I figured. Just wanted to make sure so I didn't start my interview date a little awkwardly.

Hey people,

For those of you that have interviewed already,

What happens after 2:30ish, when the scheduled activities end? Do most people leave, or do they stay around and hang out afterwards?

I'm interviewing here in a couple of weeks, and I'm trying to plan a visit to my aunt and uncle who live in Michigan sometime after the interview.

Thanks

their twitter says that 42 more invites went out today, any SDN'ers on that list?

Haha, your post made me check my status. Still no change from 7/20. Although, my MCAT scores didn't load until 8/4, so maybe that put me at the back of the stack?

Don't know why but for some reason I never added this school to my list. I've been complete for a month and a few days now. Do you think it would be too late to add UMich since they're rolling and have already started interviewing alot of ppl?

got an mstp interview today! looks like that lil committee is starting to get together!

I just added this school and am wondering what qualifies as a non-academic activity. If I did research at a university in which I was a student, but it was an independent project and not for a class, is it academic? Because if it is, then the clinical research I did at a hospital associated with a medical school is also academic...these are two of the most important things in my application.

Ahhhhh!!! I have my interview on Friday. It's my first one and I'm already starting to worry. Does anyone that interviewed already have any pointers? Things I should prepare for? Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Don't worry about it, seriously. Just enjoy it. I couldn't sleep the night before my interview as it was also my first. I cant imagine an interview day being done better or with less stress than at Michigan.

So I got this update today Application Screening Completed
Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Additional reviews may take several months as we compare groups of applicants. Thank you for your patience.

Am I rejected? Is there any hope? Has anyone been known to get an interview after having this status? Thanks.

From their twitter:

MCAT and GPA averages of our Applicants (32/3.7) and those offered interviews (38/3.8) The pool this year is simply outstanding!

38 MCAT average?? That's ridiculous...

Anyone a part of the 25 Michigan residents that just got an interview that they twittered? If so, when were you complete?

okay guys i got a question. i haven't taken biochem and UM seems to need it. Now I could just take it next semester but its not on my AMCAS app.

Do you think UM will take me ? Im pretty lost right about now.

Anybody? Please define non-academic activity for me...does independent research at a university count as academic or non-academic?

So does anyone know what this status means?

Is it a waitlist or rejection?

It means you're on hold. Waitlist is reserved as a post-interview status. A rejection would say something along the lines of "After careful review, we regret to inform you that blah blah blah."

edit

Can't read and thought I was on the MSU not U of MI thread >_<

They said on the twitter that they are closing files. Has anyone on her actually been rejected or are they just withholding that?

I believe no decisions will be sent out until Oct. 15.

I have an interview in a week. This school sends me so many emails I had to make a separate folder in my inbox. FYI, the interview day is huge--more than 40 people are invited for one day of interview that I'm attending. Mass interview indeed.

Good luck. I had my interview today. It's pretty nice and relaxed like others have said.

They are absolutely closing files. Just got rejected today. (My first rejection. 🙁)Here is what my status page says:

FILE CLOSED
After careful review, it is with regret that we inform you we are unable to offer you a position in the University of Michigan Medical School's next entering class. Given the depth and strength of our applicant pool, we continue to have far more qualified applicants than seats available.
We appreciate your interest in our medical school and wish you success and satisfaction in your future endeavors.

Good luck to those of you still in the running! :luck:

"Preparing for Admission team meeting tomorrow to discuss processing/review progress-considering reducing # interview offers for the year"

👎 Can't believe how competitive applicants are this year. I have been waiting for a month and still no news 🙁

Dude, I've been complete since 7/7. It's getting close to 3 months, and I haven't heard a thing.

Can't believe they are posting stuff like this on a Twitter feed, of all places. It is simply not appropriate and, in my opinion, betrays a lack of true respect for their applicants.

Wow that sucks, i guess their admissions process is not as "transparent" as they say. Good luck though!

Been complete since 8/10, still: File Complete - Under Review .

And yeah, the whole twitter thing? Give me a break. I don't want to hear any lectures from U-M about professionalism.

Completely agree, especially with the posting of stats of those who have received interviews, stats that are obv inflated due to their automatic invite system. It seems like a slap in the face for those not getting interviews.
Still my dream school though 🙄

I don't get what's wrong with that Twitter feed...
still seems transparent to me

actually though, it's not automatic.. they still choose who gets interviews after reviewing the applications... it is not a computer

I'm going to interpret the fact that they're considering cutting the number of interview spots to mean they're so pleased with the people they've already interviewed that they're considering giving just about all of them acceptances. Fingers crossed.

Or maybe the fact that it seems like they're not getting as many applications overall. It says they've only gotten about 3500 and they were anticipating about 2000 more than that. I can't imagine over a third of applicants still haven't applied yet. But I guess it's possible.

Oh, it's definitely "transparent", but is this type of transparency necessary or even desirable? Consider that the admissions office sent an invitation to follow this feed to all its applicants, not just those chosen for an interview. The twitter account then goes on to issue vague hints of impending rejections and interview offers. The latest missive about considering a reduction in the number of interviews (followed by a dramatic ellipsis.. ooh!) verges on insulting.

As a current applicant "under review" for about a month now, how am I supposed to react to this? Am I supposed to be enthralled by the drama of the admissions process, eager to awake every morning so I can check whether the University of Michigan has deigned to grant me one of their precious interviews? No, I'm just annoyed and increasingly turned off at the prospect of attending this school if given the opportunity. I know no one is forcing me to read it, but I still find it off-putting. I am not one to be driven to madness contemplating my chances of admission, but plenty of people are (note the existence of this forum), and U-M's twitter feed is unnecessarily feeding the frenzy.

I believe that transparency in the admissions process should play out in a school's timely and clear communication with its applicants, not this twitter BS.

My best friend received her interview 30 min. after submitting her app. She had a 42 MCAT. What I meant to say was not that it is computerized, but that the first batch of interviews have higher stats because they are part of the automatic interview system.

Let's hope this is the case :xf:

Exactly, we should be given an "Under Review" status when we are actually under review. When UPS tracking says your package is on the truck to be delivered, it actually is on that truck today to be delivered, not next week or next month. Transparency would be having a status that said "Your application is waiting to be reviewed" or "is being reviewed again," instead of 3 months of "Under Review."

Just checked my status. Oh, the irony.

oh please, how come no one on sdn is ever happy? When schools leave your status as "under review," you all cry and moan, wondering how many interviews they are giving out, trying to guess if they are sending out interviews in batches or individually, deciphering the order in which they are reviewing applications, attempting to read the minds of the adcoms, etc.
But when a school actually decides to give you a peephole into what is actually going on in the committee, you complain that it's inappropriate. You're right; no one is forcing you to read it, so don't read it if you find it insulting. It's not insulting, though. It's the truth. This process is painful- deal with it.

LOL, umich read what you guys wrote and responded:

"We know the anxiety of this process-we are moving as quickly as possible but it will be months before we have decisions for everybody."

cmon guys they are doing their best. they have tons of apps to go through (just like every school), and making decisions isn't easy. don't get mad at them and their twitter posts because you are still "under review". their twitter posts are a great idea and give much more insight into the process than any other school provides. the stats about # of interviews given/acceptances given on their website is also more info than any other school gives.
