How is that disrespectful? Unless they specifically ask not to share it, how can it be?
 
maybe maybe not, but i would imagine its best to keep it to those who've been accepted. plus, lets keep it a suprise to everyone else who will get accepted later in the cycle. they clearly put some time into that.

Maybe you're right. If I was accepted and it didn't say anything about my ability to share it with people (I would bet that they assume you'll share it with people, it's a huge life accomplishment), I'd probably at least share it with people via PM. I would love for this to be me 365 days from now. 🙂

I think UMich's admissions committee is one of the best in the world. They really try hard to be great.

I just saw the video, very well done. I suspect he didn't actually fly that helicopter, though. 😛 I can't believe the admissions staff, wow. So efficient and welcoming. Dean Gay gets two thumbs up for that video, lol.

I didn't apply here, but just lurking on this thread is telling me that UMich AdCom is AWESOME
 
Anyone else get the acceptance e-mail with your interviewers cc'ed? Are you responding with a thank-you? (I just sent a thank-you letter to the Admissions Committee after my interview...)

Congrats to everyone else with acceptances! I love the way Michigan has been so straight-forward with this process.

Do you think most just wrote a thank u letter after the interview day to the admissions dept?
 
Ahh, a thank-you letter to the admissions committee. That would have made sense. I decided to email thank-yous to each of my interviewers, since a) I wanted them to see it before the admissions committee met, so they didn't think I was a rude, ungrateful jerk and b) I didn't have mailing addresses for 2 of my interviewers so I figured it'd get to them easier that way. Plus there were 3 interviewers, so hand-writing 3 letters would have been a little annoying. I've done that for my other interviews, but I've had at most 2 interviewers for those places so it was pretty easy. I almost feel like I should send another thank you note to the admissions committee (and maybe even a second one for my interviewers) now that you guys mentioned it. Thanking them for accepting me, for whatever reason.

Edit: Yeah, I think I'll send a letter to the admissions committee, and throw in a couple lines rethanking my interviewers. Although I swear one of my interviewers must have hated me.

i didn't write thank you notes to my interviewers but I still got the video. I was saving them until now 😉
 
I hope they update the admissions page soon. I'm curious to see how many acceptances they sent out already.
 
So...deferred to December.

This doesn't look like a very fun position to be in. Looking through last year's thread, some people in this spot were deferred AGAIN to March, and then it sounds like they were mostly waitlisted. It also sounds like they were placed on top or middle tiers of the waitlist despite the "highly desirable" status -- meaning that marker doesn't really amount to much. I didn't see any posts from those deferred and then accepted in December.

Does anyone know how many applicants this happens to? For some reason, at the interview info session I wrote down "20", but such a small number seems kind of weird so I'm wondering if that's actually a percent. Oh boy, guess I should feel special...
 
Pretty much no one who has interviewed gets rejected at this point, right? so being waitlisted is basically the worst possible outcome, cause with deferrment you're still in the running and they said they take ~10 kids off the waitlist, if any
 
Sorry JJFoshay. I really am.

Cause the truth is people with Highly Desirable Status really get pushed around in the admissions cycle, you might get in in december, or it could be til march or even later. Sorry man.


Chin up though, some of us are on hold or just plain being ignored.

Very true, and I empathize with you -- I'm still waiting to hear from other schools, too. Like you say, however, this feels like I'm being pushed around or toyed with (the appeal of the interview day belies how competitive U-M is). I'd almost rather be waitlisted outright than be on some mysterious, de facto waitlist.

I wonder if the deferments are an artifact of their auto-interview process...some people (e.g. me) with high stats are not knock-out all star premeds in all aspects, so we get to the early interviews but then aren't really comparable with the general population also attending those days.

Tough position to be in. But you gotta believe that its better than a flat out waitlist or rejection. I think you will get good news from a few other *great* places before december anyway😉

Hey, how about the deposite and other paperwork required to confirm the acceptance? Believe it or not, I received no email from the school, I just checked it in the status page, and not instruction given to me whatsoever.

You will not need to send in anything until May as for deposit etc at michigan. Once you decide Michigan is the place for you, then you send in the deposit.

Looks like they updated it -- they made 35% of their offers. I think they accept ~350? So ~120 offers sent out.
 
Got the acceptance video last night and about died laughing. Awesome job UMich! 👍

Can you imagine how cruel it would be to get that video in your e-mail and have him hand you a rejection letter? 😱

I think it's 35% of the number of offers they expect to make. I think they've interviewed/reviewed around 200 people so far, so accepting ~120 doesn't seem too unreasonable.

Yeah, and I think it's actually been more like 260 people or so. Cause I know there are people who started interviewing 8/28, and Michigan has interviewed and reviewed 6 interview groups of approximately 40-45 people if I'm correct in my assumptions. Their overall acceptance rate is about 50% for people who have received interviews, and the fact that most people that've interviewed have like a 3.8+, 38+ and they've accepted just under half of them doesn't sound too crazy at all.

Yeah, I was just going off their interview schedule here (pdf warning), which showed 5 interview days so far and assuming there were 40 people each day.
 
Oh good call. I didn't realize they didn't interview the first Friday of September. So yeah, probably closer to 200.
 
Huh. Does anyone else still just have "Interview Scheduled" as their status? Is that what it looks like if they've deferred you until December? I interviewed October 2, so shouldn't I have some new status, at least a deferral?

That's very strange. You should have some kind of update by now, whatever it is. You might want to call or email them.

Difficulty with both of those things on my end as well. I'm sure they'll work out those kinks in the coming days. I bet they're just swamped with all the craziness of bid day and having to now go over the thousands of applications they still have.

Not sure what the password/username is -- it might not be set up yet.

I think the group on facebook is actually called "U-M Medical School Admitted Student Group"

UM has already made decisions on 5 out of 17 of their interview days, so they have already held roughly 30% of their max number of interviews. Yet from this pool they have offered 35% of their acceptances.

At what point do you think that UM will have offered all of their acceptances and will only have spots left for the wait list?

UM has made roughly 62% of its max number of interview offers by now. Do you think most other med schools have offered this large a percentage of their interview slots at this time, or is UM just unusually quick/early?

UM definitely gets an early jump on the admissions process over other schools, especially similarly esteemed ones. I doubt more than a few schools have given over half of their allotted interview spots already. In terms of when the school will offer all their acceptances, I'm sure they'll continue to leave admissions spots open till the very end. It's pointless to interview people in February if you've already given out all your acceptances. Of course, it's definitely tremendously in your favor to interview as soon as possible.
