I was under the assumption that they made 35% of 170 (their class size) acceptances... so 60 acceptances? idk. do people actually get rejected/waitlisted at this point anyway? i have a feeling it's just accept or defer right now...

So...deferred to December.

This doesn't look like a very fun position to be in. Looking through last year's thread, some people in this spot were deferred AGAIN to March, and then it sounds like they were mostly waitlisted. It also sounds like they were placed on top or middle tiers of the waitlist despite the "highly desirable" status -- meaning that marker doesn't really amount to much. I didn't see any posts from those deferred and then accepted in December.

Does anyone know how many applicants this happens to? For some reason, at the interview info session I wrote down "20", but such a small number seems kind of weird so I'm wondering if that's actually a percent. Oh boy, guess I should feel special...

I'm with you JJFoshay (I'm on the deferred list). Their auto-invite system was nice--I only had to wait 12 hours to get my interview, but it looks like I may have to wait 5 months or so to get a maybe-but-probably-not decision. Michigan does have very cold winters...

dude how creepy, umich admissions is totally reading this page:

Rumor Squelch: We will indeed admit some "Defer Decision " candidates the week of 12/21-Premature to say how many but offers will be made! - Twitter

Waaaaugh that's so creepy. My name here is easily connected to my identity -- maybe I should censor my posts? :-\

P.S. U-M I really wanna go to your school! ;-)

P.P.S. Wasn't trying to start rumors -- simply stressed and speculating from ambiguous info in the hope of clarification

Anyone know if first semester grades are considered in the merit-based financial aid decisions that they make around March?

Can anyone tell me what the turn-around time for interview invites/holds/rejections has been lately.

C:9/15

Also, does UM do silent rejections often?

I second the preceding question - the concept of silent rejections is SO frustrating, though it doesn't seem like Michigan's the kind of school to do that...Hopefully they'll put me out of my misery soon or surprise me with some decent news. I've been complete since mid-August, which isn't toooo long ago, but even if I have the honor of being placed on HOLD, it's at least an update!

Does UM do silent rejections at all???

I want to be on UM admission committee. I read their Twitter, and they didn't spend much time reading our applications. They were too busy watching sport games and movies, having a BBQ, going to restaurants, etc. What a life that would be. :meanie:

So as a doctor, with patient's life's in your hand (not just a student application), you shouldn't eat, have a family life, or go to sleep. The nannies can take care of the kids & the neighbor can take care of the significant other. Is that the idea here?

I think he is using sarcasm...which is apparently lost on you😉

So if we have been admitted, when do they start coming out with the financial aid/scholarship packages.

The merit aid is released March 28th IIRC. Not sure about need-based aid.

still "under review" since mid july lol

i'm dying to go to umich, i'm a true ann arborite! i know it's a long shot though 😳

they wait until they know what schools you've been admitted to

So has anyone received an interview invite after being on the pre-interview hold?

Can you please clarify this.

I believe in March medical schools are able to see which schools you are currently holding an acceptance at. With that knowledge they can determine how much they need to offer to lure you to UM.

Really? How do you know this? I thought med schools didn't get to see what other schools you got into until May 15th, and I think Michigan starts assigning merit aid at the end of March. 😕

So in that case it benefits applicants to obtain multiple acceptances and play the field?

This policy seems like something medical schools would not want to encourage because it promotes people accepting schools they have no interest in attending just to finagle more money, causing schools to get a huge amount of withdrawals around March (which I guess is good for waitlisted candidates).

Anyone else still having trouble with the facebook group? I've requested to join like 3 times now... Do you think this is a privacy issue with my facebook account? I know the email said "request friend," but i figured that was a mistake, and they meant request to join? Any help is appreciated!!

Everything about the way U-M is conducting admissions suggests that they are highly focused on recruiting desirable applicants and raising their ranking. Most med schools probably don't like this policy, but I wouldn't be surprised if U-M and other top schools rely on it to the ire of the larger mass of lower ranked schools. Schools also eliminate the risk of having too many withdrawals by accepting many more applicants than they have spots for -- it's all built into the system.

Uhohss.. maybe they mistakenly told you you were accepted? 😛

Hmm.. is your name on your facebook account anyhow different than your legal name? Maybe they don't recognize you as an admitted student. Otherwise, I don't know. I'd email one of the admins of the group.

Are we sure that med schools can view the schools we have been accepted to as early as March? I don't doubt it, I just want to be sure that this is true. It definitely changes the game... means I'm not withdrawing any acceptances until after I see financial aid. 😳 I had originally intended to only keep the top schools that I am considering, but now maybe not.

I can't find info on deposits. Do accepted student have to make deposits? by when?

No deposit needed for Michigan to hold your acceptance. If you decide to enroll, they require a non-refundable enrollment deposit by May 15th.

Per what was said on interview day, I'm pretty sure they can see other acceptances after they accept you NOW. March 15th is when admission offers must equal class size, and March 25th is just when U-M allocates scholarships.

Well, if some daring individual wanted to ask the admissions committee about when/if they can see our acceptances, there is a U-M Admissions Online Chat tonight...just sayin'...

We're having technical difficulties with the chat...please be patient. We still do want to answer your questions!! Stay posted for updates 🙂

Anyone else not able to log on to the chat? I get "an error has occured" 🙁

EDIT: Ah, you're on it. I'll stop complaining...

no med school can see what other med schools you've applied to or been admitted to before they themselves have admitted you. Who cares if they can see that info after they've admitted you? they can't rescind your admission based on that, so it wouldn't matter

No med school can see where you have been admitted until after March 15 and they can only see that information if they have admitted you.

Unfortunately due to technical errors we will not be having a chat tonight 🙁 We're really sorry about this but we will reschedule soon!

It wouldn't matter in the context of being admitted, but as SteinUmStein mentioned, knowing that they can see your other acceptances when they're considering scholarships is relevant

I remembered from the interview day that that they could see your acceptances after they had admitted you, but I couldn't remember if the date was March 15th or May 15th. Thanks for the info!

yeah sorry, that's what I was getting at... it matters in regards to scholarships, but no one should necessarily feel uncomfortable or start declining interviews/acceptances with the fear that schools might see their interviews/acceptances and decide to reject them. (wow, what a crappy sentence, i fail at writing 🙁)

Oh ok, that's what you were getting at. That's a fair point -- I didn't think about that

However, it does make a difference in terms of the number of schools I plan on pursuing. I was originally planning on canceling upcoming interviews and withdrawing from schools I did not really love enough to attend pending my first acceptance.

However, if financial aid is based on the number and quality of my acceptances then I suppose it is worth it to keep shelling out money to go on every interview I am invited to and say yes to every acceptance offer until I get my financial aid package offer from my top choice.

Does anybody know where we can get a list of the members of the Executive Admissions Committee? I tried searching the website, but could find a list of 200+ names, which I assume is all of the interviewers.

read their twitter. they dont care about the number of acceptances you got or the scholarship money other schools give you when determining their scholarships. so no, dont shell out the cash unless you are actually interested in the school or you think the school will give you leverage for scholarship. overall number of acceptances means very little

keep the rumors flying. umich def reads this post and swats em down!

Wow is it me or did Michigan decrease the total number of interviews they're giving out this year by 25 less from the previous 675 (which was already decreased from 700)?? Hope that end of Sept. submission doesn't hurt me too much...

In July they said 725 interviews
In August they said 700 interviews
In Spetember they said 675 interviews
In October they said 650 interviews
I am almost afraid of November 😱

Holy moly, that is pretty scary indeed.

I agree its scary, but technically its the same percentage as every year, its just that this year theyve received less applicants, but apparently stronger ones. So I guess its not good news.

I could swear it was yesterday that the ticker said 60 out of 725.

Yay -- right from the horse's mouth:

"While number of interview offers is always subject to change-a near certainty that we offer 650 interviews this year."

Hey -- the person reading the thread for U of M -- I really love U of M. Can u put in a good word for me!

On Twitter it says that the main determinant in your financial package is how bad they want you. But considering that my app was complete Sept 15th and I still have not gotten an interview invite that indicates they probably don't want me very much. So I can only assume that even if I do get an interview and get accepted, I won't get any money.

Well, according to this post from last year, a person can get in off the waitlist and still get a scholarship...so I would say that how badly they want you can certainly change over time

Don't worry i was complete in late July, and I am still under review. I have gotten 9 other interviews, and have not heard anything from UMICH...It's unfortunate, as I was/am really in love with this school and would love the opportunity to interview here.

I wonder who actually writes the Twitter page? At some points it seems to come from a more official, collective point of view, but at other times there are personal statements (going here, doing this, etc.) and pictures of events like football games and stuff (often featuring Dr. Gay). Then there are the more abstract, random postings you'd expect to find on anyone's twitter (pictures from the top of the library, pictures of the autumn leaves, etc.) Plus they also read SDN directly. It's all very mysterious...perhaps we could impress them by trying to make a psychiatric diagnosis?

Closing time-ending a 13 hour admission day & I love it!! All tweets here written by Director Ruiz & Dean Gay- we like to be in touch!

Well there we go!

In other news, the U-M SDN thread currently rivals traditional methods of contacting adcoms in order to answer your most burning questions.

anyone knows if full scholarships cover only tuition or they also provide assistance with books, living expenses, rent?
