Anyone who is interviewed is someone they are willing to accept.

That being said, there is no info for this year since the selection committee has changed.

In Miami Science is a critical shortage so you do not need education exp or credits to teach I am certified to teach biology physics and chemistry[

This is true. You just need a Bachelors and to pass Subject Area tests, General Knowledge Test and a Professional Education Test.

What do you mean the selection committee has changed? Anyone have last years stats?

The selection committee is comprised of a new chair and new members. Meaning even if you have last years stats, they aren't going to help you since those came from a different committee and thus potentially different criteria.

Just got two more interview invites!!

USF is my top choice though... I hope to get accepted so I can cancel all of these other interviews! 🙂

That's amazing. Good luck for all your interviews.

i'll be there on tuesday...anyone else?

why would you want to go to usf if you just got accepted to john hopkins.

I had already bought my plane ticket when i heard from hopkins. If USF doesnt blow me away on tuesday (or at least tempt me enough with its low price tag) i will likely withdraw after my interview.

You know you can just use the trip to play around in Tampa or something right? I doubt USF will offer you anything new, although a full-tuition scholarship would probably be forthcoming in a few months.

well technically i had already gotten permission to miss a class (the only college class i've ever taken that requires this) for the usf interview. i'm too honest to go back on that, i guess 😉 i've been in tampa since thursday so i've gotten plenty of play time too.

and who knows? schools have surprised me before. i wasn't expecting to enjoy tufts as much as i did, for instance. perhaps usf will have something up its sleeve - didn't you enjoy usf??

Anyone know if they put most of their interviewees on hold until march? Or do they send out a fair amount of accptances or rejections right away?

Sorry, but there is just no definitive answer for your question right now. Not only have the committee members changed this year, but so have the parameters for the selection process. I say just go to the interview, give it your all and you could be one of the ones to get an acceptance right away then you won't have to worry about March. Good luck!

I just wanted to comment that USF is an amazing school- great atmosphere
and Tampa is the perfect type of city -not to big or unsafe but just right! plus lots of hospitals!

USF is being kind of slow this year with handing out interviews but don't count it out yet- they let in like 1/4 of class kinda late last summer but from what I can see its def worth waiting for...

Has anyone received, or know someone who has received, an interview invite here with a 27 MCAT? The rest of my stats are on mdapps.

I did enjoy USF, and I have to say that they did pleasantly surprise me. However, it's difficult to imagine that it'll end up swaying you from say Hopkins. With that said, I don't think it hurts to get a feel of different med schools, so it's certainly not a bad choice either. Hope you have fun there and good luck!

Yup, the whole process has changed for USF, so nobody really knows right now. I CAN tell you, however, that it's been 3 weeks since my interview and I haven't heard a peep from them yet, which is already different from the 1 week notification thing from last year.

The average mcat for entering students was about about 29.5. So I dont see why you should be disqualified from an interview.

Where did you get that from? On the website, it clearly states that the average MCAT for entering students was 29.7. 31 seems a little bit to high for USF standards. UF and UM are arguably the two best medical schools in Florida and their MCAT averages are about 31.

I went to the admission office in September this year and consulted about my transcripts. They told me the MCAT average for last year is 31.

The admission officer, Aaron, also told me that last year one applicant has 3.9 GPA and 37 MCAT, but no ECs. He/She even didn't get an interview. I think it depends on the whole package. By the way, "reidmike", when did you submit your 2ndary?

I sent it in right after they started sending them out...which i think was in august or something. so I have been complete there for at least 2 months or so.

Hi "jla314", can you share some interview experience at USF? Thanks.

GPA

What is the minimum GPA I need to apply?
Our average science (BCPM) GPA is 3.8 and our average MCAT is 31P (as stated in the 2010-2011 AAMC MSAR http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/msar.htm). The further your GPA and/or MCAT score is below the average, the more difficult it is to be considered acceptance.

I have the MSAR for this application cycle and its states that that these numbers represent the porportion of ACCEPTED APPLICANTS. Not all accepted applicants go to USF, and I assume that most applicants with higher MCAT scores and GPA are declining their acceptances and going to other schools. That would explain the discrepancies between the average GPA and MCAT scores of ACCEPTED APPLICANTS and MATRICULATED APPLICANTS. Either way I think Redimike (based on his MD profile) will get an interview, he just has to wait later in the application cycle after the school has interviewed all the candidates with "higher stats". Now whether he gets in or not will depend on his interview.

That's a great point.

BTW, I can't resist to keep checking my email and all these threads in this season. How about you guys?

I agree with most all of this. The exception being is that they are being really conservative with interviews this year - meaning they really are only interviewing applicants that they are willing to accept on paper. So depending on the other parts of the application, you could conceivably be interviewed early with a lower MCAT (but it's not as likely).

Another thing to keep in mind is that we didn't start interviews until the beginning of November - which is several weeks later than in years past and later than most other schools.

And I would argue with UF and UM being "better" medical schools. Med school is what you make of it, and the most important factor is where you feel comfortable and supported. Your school can have all the research dollars and top name clinicians in the world, but if you're miserable it's going to affect your performance.

Hey! Just got an interview invite! I was complete 9/24, and my interview is on 12/1! So excited- this is one of my top two!

Also, I have a question for those who have interviewed- did anyone go to the monday night get-together with med students? How was it? Thoughts on going?? Thanks so much!

I went, there were 10 med students, and 2 interviewees and the other dude left early, so let's just say I had every single question answered in every single perspective 😀 It was really nice, the food was good, and the students were very friendly. However, don't take their advice on admission policies, because it's totally redone this year.

You went on a interview when there were only two interviewees? that seems odd.

hey, submitted the secondaries 10/26. Few questions...1) how long does it take for them to receive everything and notify you that you're good to go for review? 2) I'm not sure how my stats are...3.7/32R, have shadowing and volunteering experiences in a hospital, worked as a shift lead manager for the past 4 years for my university security program and played a DIII sport (lacrosse) all 4 years. I don't have any research because I never had time, leading me to my last question 3) having research experience isn't make or break is it? I've always been interested but with how busy my life is no one was interested because I had practices every afternoon and work at night. Thanks for the help!

The interview day went from 9 to 3:30. You have two interviewers (I had two faculty, but some people got 4th years). They also give you a tour of part of their campus and their sim center. Overall it was a really well organized and fun day - USFs faculty and staff have been literally the most helpful and welcoming of any I have encountered. It's a low stress day and they really are trying to put you at ease.
Good luck!

Hi dingyibvs, do you wear different suits in the Monday night and Tuesday interview?

Hi dingyibvs, do you wear different suits in the Monday night and Tuesday interview?

Monday night is not an interview, just a casual dinner and conversation with current students so you can have the opportunity to get to know us and hear about the school from our perspective. Save yourself the extra dry cleaning cost and don't wear a suit. Most of the current students will be in jeans and t-shirts and most of the applicants will be dress casual. I think I have only seen one person show up with a tie, but no jacket. The most important thing is to enjoy the night.

No, I was talking about the Monday night get-together. The other 4 interviewees didn't show up to it.

The get-together is informal, just t-shirt and shorts are fine.

BTW, got the phone call from Mr. Perez today. Accepted!!! :soexcited: Too sick to celebrate really tho 🙁
