When I last spoke with Nelson he said there are usually significant movements on the wait list the first week of june and the last week of June into the first week of July. After that....who knows? Also it is the first day of June that UT contacts other medical schools of students already holding acceptances (at other schools) and lets them know they are about to offer an acceptance. This promotes movement on the wait list I assume. 🙂

Thanks for your response, VitalArmor. It is helping me to keep my hopes up this summer...🙂:xf:

No prob Simodk, I have been doing this longer than I want to admit. Just dont get too crazy when after I have kept hope alive and then it dies ugh! Anyway, did you ever find out where you were on the wait list?

I got a "top 60 or so". I am not sure what that means exactly. It might be a number somewhere between 61 and 69, who knows? 😕
I looked up the last year's thread and there were around 56 ppl who got off the waitlist by June the 1st. They only got 30 or so ppl off the WL this year and it is almost June. I do not see myself getting off this WL....I doubt they will get so far up until the school starts. I may be a bit pessimistic, though I am just trying to be realistic.

Yeah well I got "you're just inside the top 3rd" which means 70-80.

Anybody on the out-of-state waitlist? Or is everyone on here from in state? Just curious because they have an out of state wait list that is different than the in-state list. Not sure how many people are on each.

I am somewhere near the middle of the out-of-state waitlist and Nelson told me that there aren't many on the out-of-state list but that many above me had acceptances elsewhere. May bode well for everyone on both waitlists. Just thought I would share.

I'm on the out of state waitlist, not sure where though. I also have an acceptance elsewhere and will be taking my name off the waitlist, so hopefully that might help someone out!

Thanks auburn, I however have never heard of there being two wait lists. If someone is out of state, what was the number of students on your wait list. They told us there were 245 people on our list. I wonder if that was a combined number?

I recieved the same thing in the mail indicating there were 245 on the waitlist. However when I called Nelson to find out my position he told me my situation was different and couldn't really give me a position because I was out of state.

I'm sure you know that only 10% of the class can be out-of-state by law so that is probably why there are two lists or the equivalent according to Nelson. I still think there are 245 waitlisters total but a separate type pool for out-of-state applicants.

Basically it sucks for me because someone not from TN must withdrawl their acceptance and UT has to want to fill that spot with an out of state person instead of an in-state one. No hope for me I am feeling.

He wouldn't say how many were out of state but said that it wasn't very many so I would think it couldn't be more than 30 to 50 but that is just my guess. He tried to give me hope that there was still a shot at being somewhere in the middle of the list but I assume he probably does that for everyone.

Thanks waitlist22 for your response. I am sorry he cannot tell you your position. I guess it is a knife with two edges. If an out of stater drops it does not help me because I am in state. So in some small way we are the same. I do think your chances are greater though in a way. They will keep cycling through the OOS list until they get one who will accept. This means that if they come to an OOS slot on the wait list then it WILL be filled. They will not just move on to the next guy on the list. But I guess it all evens out in the end.🙂

Thanks for the encouragement. You might still be okay as well though. The way I understand it the maximum is 10% out of state. They could decide to have only 5% from OOS and when OOS people drop from the class they decide to fill those positions from in state.

But I suppose it does us no good to try and predict! 🙂 but it is nice to talk with other people in the same situation. I hope your spot on the waitlist eventually gives you an acceptance!

Waitlist22, this argument doesn't make much sense on the school's part. For each in state student, the state is essentially paying the out of state tuition difference. With a 5% flux, that's about 8 students. So if the school takes more in state students, then state is paying about 80k per student, 640k more in total. That just doesn't seem likely. The school can only afford so many in-state students with the money they get from the state and there will always be out of state students willing to pay more, so as long as there is room for the students, they will take them.

In short, the school can afford about 150 in state students and has the facilities for 165, so if 15 students are willing to pick up the entire amount it costs for UTHSC to educate them, so be it.

Ziff700: Sure, I certainly understand that argument and agree with you but it also benefits the state to take less OOS applicants than 10% because they theoretically increase their odds of keeping their graduates in the state of TN to practice. Again I say theoretically. Anyway who knows what they will do or what percent they will take, for my sake I hope you are right and UT agrees.

Anybody have an updated count on how many people they have taken off of the waitlist?? Last I heard was somewhere around 30.

I have heard about the same number (30 ppl) getting off the WL so far. If any of the M1 students could enlighten us about how many waitlisted students were offered acceptances last year....anyways, it may not be the same number this year. I believe that 15 ppl on the top of the WL automatically got an acceptance after the class size was officially increased to 165 which means that they actually weren't considered as a part of the WL. This made the WL to move much faster last year vs. this year. They also got into it deeper probably for the same reason.
I may read too much into it...paranoia kicks in, no wonder. This waiting game is anything but good :scared:

So yesterday UT published the list of incoming students. They publish this list every year to the enrolled students. You can only see it if you have access to their system. My wife is a student and has access to the system. Anyway, this means that they do not expect any more major movement on the list. However I have spoken to a few students who have yet made up thier minds to attend UT or not. The list is not final. The last time the list was updated last year was on August 10th. This does not mean they had movement up to August 9th. But it does mean the list had to be updated so there was movement. So there is yet hope for those near the 30's and 40's on the wait list. For us down here in the 60's and 70's, well we can probably plan to do other things...but who knows?:xf:

I know they got to at least 56 on the wait list last year maybe a tiny bit further. Now I dont know if this means 56 acceptances or if it just means they only got to student number 56. I do know that #56 got an acceptance...they are not the same thing.

well, I wish I was high enough on the list to get in this year...
I am curious what number on the list they will stop with the offerings. Based upon data from previous years and taking into account the number of ppl already accepted off WL, am assuming they'll stop somewhere around 50's. Let's see what happens in the next few weeks..

well simodk, like I have said before, there is a difference between the number of people they offer acceptances to and the number of people who accept. The school must continue to offer acceptances until every slot is full. If you get a number of students on the wait list who cannot or will not matriculate then the school will have to move on to the next individual. The school will offer acceptances all the way to student #245 on the wait list if they have to in order to fill all slots. The way diane worded the acceptence numbers was "the average number of alternates ACCEPTED has been 60 - 65." So, if they have to ask 100 people to get to 60-65 then they will get to student #100. However, these last 2 years are unusual. Last year was the first year they had 165 slots available. They did not know they were going to take 165 until the last minute so those extra 15 slots came off the wait list. This is bad news for us who are using the old numbers. They got to student #56 last year....subtract 15 and you get student #41. Assuming no students on the list refuse an acceptance you could expect that the school will have all its slots full by the mid 40's. You see when they were filling 150 slots they gave acceptances to 180 students right away. Unlike last year they gave themselves a similar cushion by accepting 195 students this year. So the extra 15 slots were accounted for this year and they are unlikely to get to student #56. Of course all of this is conjecture...:xf:

How sure are you of this? If I recall correctly, Nelson claimed they got into the 70's last year. Maybe they made offers up to student #71 on the list and then you subtract 15 to get 56 students accepted off the wait list. Who knows...

Anyways, I'm still waiting to hear back and I was told top 50...

I recall that Nelson claimed 70 ppl being offered an acceptance last year, too. After substracting the 15 extra seats, I thought that around 50 ppl would be offered a seat for this year. You may expect to get an acceptance in the next few weeks, Bananastand...If I were in your position on the list, I would have no doubts about it. My 2 c 🙂

Well, Talked to Dean Strother today. As of today, he says just over 40 people have been offered acceptances off the wait-list. He also said that by all looks, this is it as far as the major movement on the list goes. He said that a few people will probably drop out or defer over the next few months, but overall you [we] should not to expect much more significant movement.

As he said, "Well, we're about half-way to you" 🙁. Suck.

Hey guys, I was told top 60 and I haven't heard anything yet either. These posts above are not so promising now 🙁......Good luck to all.

Any luck on your other wait list megal01? Do you know where you are at on it?

Ditto. "Alternate List" Called Dean Strother, he stated I'm about top 1/3rd, but considering that the past wait-lists were 60-65 students versus 245, top 1/3 or even top 1/4 puts you in worse standing than being in the bottom 1/4 of prior years...statistics speaking...
I think I just realized that you and I are probably really close together on the wait list. Not that it matters. Just an observation.👍

Hi everybody - I released my position at UT so I hope my spot makes one of you very very happy!

Just got the call from Strother yesterday and I'm in!

That means they should be close to the 50 mark on the wait list. I'll be making the decision between here and Quillen by Monday, so I'll keep you all posted. Best of luck everyone.

Well if you choose quillen you give one of us here hope. Anyway, did you find out what number you were on the list?

Congrats Banana!!

Just withdrew my spot from Quillen today and accepted the spot from memphis!

Good luck to all still waiting. Some movement is still going on.

Did anybody else get the letter from UT basically saying to piss off? 🙄

Well, I was hoping (rather selfishly) that you would pick Quillen. Anyway, good luck in school, thanks for the update🙂

Not sure what you mean. Aren't you on the wait list? The last letter I got told me I was on the wait list. Are you OOS? I think OOS people may get different correspondence. I am not OOS so I don't really know.

I am on the waitlist.

The letter said something to the effect that it would be highly unlikely for me to get in off of the alternate list this year, and to start making other plans.

I am OOS, so thankfully I got in to my state school.

Well, they have not sent me a letter like that but I actually wish they would so I could know to get on with my life. As it is I am student late seventy-something and am pretty sure they will not get to me.

I am in-state and received the same letter. They probably send it to anyone not in the first 100 slots of the waitlist. For those of you in the ~70 range it's not looking bad for you. Good luck to you all. I'm holding out for Quillen.

I hope that you are right about still having a chance if in ~70ish range. I am afraid that they will stop pulling from WL when they will get around 55 - 60.
They may start sending those letters also to people who are within 60-100 range later on. Let's see what happens during the first week of July....

Okay all, UT has posted a revised student list as of June 14th. I went through the list and there has been a change up of 6 names. The first list was published on June 2nd. So in 12 days time there has been six names added and six names lost. I do not know if Bananastand is one of those names as I do not know their real name. Also Banana did not accept until monday-the same day the list was republished. Not sure what this means though. We know Banana was top 50 and we know as of June 4th they were into the 40's. I think it is not too far fetched to say they are at 50 or more at this point so those who are top 60 might still make it! :xf:

Anyone considering the pharmacology program? Do you guys think it is a good idea?

If your grades are the weakpoint of you application, then it might be a good idea.

If you're grades are good, then you might want to focus on something else like research, clinical experience, MCAT to strengthen your application and not tack on more student loan debt.

Well I have heard that Dr. Sweatman is pretty exacting. Not an easy teacher. Therefore it is not an easy program if you are not up to it.

any recent movement on the WL, anybody? 😀
I sure hope someone hears something:xf: I gave you what I got, 6 names changed places on the list that UT publishes to its students in 12 days though I suspect they went through more than 6 names on the wait list to get those 6 people.

Thanks Vital! I know you did say that but you may also know how it is when you wait....
By the way, have you applied for the next cycle in the meantime? How do you plan on improving your application?

Are you considering the pharmacology program, Xslim?

I think it is actually too late at this point. I found out they start classes for the pharm program in early July which is just a couple weeks away. I can't imagine they are still taking applications or that one could get everything together and sent to them in that amount of time.

I have not reapplied...my situation is...unique. However I am in a graduate program that may help my chances...I hope. I am in a master of health administration program at the moment.

So I tried to call Nelson today. His message said he was to be out of the office from june 21st through the 29th. I believe that Nelson likes to call the students off the waitlist himself. So, if I am not mistaken, we will not hear of any more students coming off the list until after the 29th. I am expecting this next week and a half to be a dead zone.
