WOW. i mean its not like weve been waiting all year ....ahhhhhhh
+pissed+

finally! flash, how far from memphis do you live? im about 300 miles so hoping mine could come today too! did you call for your ranking?

About time! I'm 20 minutes away from the school, so I guess that means I'll get mine today too. :xf:

Aye, it's the waitlist for me as well.

Well i got my letter. Wait list for me too. How in the world do they have over 200 of us on the wait list?!! (According to the waitlist letter) That just seems excessive. Good luck to the rest of you.

Hey if yall call them and ask about your waitlist ranking, PLEASE post the info. I'm trying to decide when/if i should call them.

My letter said not to bother asking our spot on the wait list. If we call will they still tell us?

People from past years got them to tell what "portion" they were in...like top 1/4th or something like that. I just don't know how far into the summer they asked about it.

I called, and Nelson told me that I in the second third, which I assume is not a great place to be. I will be doing my teaching program next year anyway, but it would have been nice to get this taken care of. Hopefully, some will drop off the waitlist to make some room. Good luck everyone.

I'm guessing so.

So what exactly did the letters say?? 200 people? That sucks

Ah, I guess my letter will probably come today. Has anyone gotten accepted or rejected as a result of the April 23rd decisions or has everyone been receiving WL letters?

Letter arrived this afternoon and just like everyone else, alternate list as they call it. My letter states that there are currently 245 applicants on hold and that generally 60-65 students are accepted off of the alternate list.

I've tried calling a few times and the line goes straight to voicemail. I'd have my phone off the hook too if I knew that 245 people would be calling to find out their relative rank on the alternate list. It seems that unless you're in the top 1/4 of the alternate list you should plan on not being selected.

No letter yet...I guess it takes 3 days for the letters to arrive if you live up north...good luck to all those still waiting

Ditto. "Alternate List" Called Dean Strother, he stated I'm about top 1/3rd, but considering that the past wait-lists were 60-65 students versus 245, top 1/3 or even top 1/4 puts you in worse standing than being in the bottom 1/4 of prior years...statistics speaking...

Waitlisted. I'll probably wait a little bit before I call. I'd also wager that almost the entire group of "no decision" applicants got wait listed. I just get that feeling cuz this is my second time around and the same thing happened last year. If they had wanted you, you'd already be accepted, and if they didn't, they'd have rejected you by now. The rest get to wait...

...where did you hear this... I'm pretty sure they always have a huge waitlist and typically they average about 60-65 acceptances off the list.

Ooooooo....Yeah, My bad. Just read the paper again, and it is 60-65 people accepted, on average.

What is the point of putting us on "no decision" instead of just waitlisting us to begin with?

No letter here in north alabama either...

Waitlists suck.

ranviernode: I think it is so they could get a feel for all the applicants, and rank them accordingly in one fell swoop as to (theoretically) make it more fair, and give a better gradient of top vs mid vs bottom candidates along the list.

I'm in Knoxville and received my letter: "Alternate list." Are we using alternate and wait list as interchangeable 😕 ? I wish you all the best.

Cheers,

Nate

Received my alternate list letter as well.

Yes Alternate list and waitlist are interchangeable here (there is only one list, albeit a rather long list).

Got mine, too.
GL to everyone waiting :xf:

got mine too. waitlisted.

does 60-65 mean that many are accepted or that many offers?

as in do they usually average 60-65 spots filled through the waitlist or just 60-65 first on the waitlist get offers?

From the tour, I remember they said ~25% of the entering class was made up of people on the wait list, FWIW.

Does anybody know if they only give out as many acceptances as they have spots allowed...as in, as soon as someone withdraws do they pull from the waitlist immediately?

If their waitlist has 250 people on it, I doubt that they oversubscribed their class.

Who knows, I could be wrong though.

Well the mail just came... still nothing.

If someone get their letter in Knoxville by now, you would think that I would have gotten something in North Alabama.

Hi - new here. And this is my first time to apply to schools. My waitlist letter from UT has some black type at the bottom with recommendations from the Admissions Committee on what to focus on in order to strengthen my application if I don't get in this year and want to reapply. I know that some people didn't get any black type recommendations like this on their waitlist letters. Does that mean that I'm probably in the bottom portion of the waitlist? Any ideas? Thanks!

Well, I have the same thing on mine. You can look at it one of two ways: optimistically or pessimistically.

The optimistic outlook would be that they really liked you and that those things are the only things keeping you from obtaining an acceptance right off the bat, so instead they will put you in the top running of the alternate list...I mean it would take a lot of time to go through 200+ individual letters and specify what you need to improve on...so clearly they like you enough to give you the extra time.

The pessimistic outlook would be that everybody else is qualified to be accepted, but there simply is not enough room, hence you and I would be at the bottom of the list.

Who knows what the system is, the more we delve the more we stress...I'm just gonna go along for the ride and follow their recommendations.

Thanks for your response - I was thinking about those two options as well. Maybe they have a couple of general categories of pre-made responses like that which are added to certain applicants letters involving the major areas of application strengths: coursework, mcat, medical experience, etc. (?) Maybe I'll wait a bit and ask sometime after the 15th. Good luck to you!

Just got home...waitlisted like everyone else but no bold print suggestions. Have a lot of people been receiving suggestions?

I saw where you said earlier that you live "up north." How far from Memphis do you live? I'm just wondering because I live about 200 miles away and have yet to receive anything.

I live about 850 miles northeast of Memphis

Hmm well crap

it might have been a delay in mail delivery bcz of the whether conditions this past weekend; just saying...I know that flooding caused serious damages in Nashville and surrounding areas. Are you close to this area?

I live close to Huntsville, AL (North Alabama), so that could be a possibility. I didn't even think about that.

Here is my experience with bold typing.

Last year I was wait listed and received bold typing suggesting that if I don't get in this year, I should look to retake the mcat if I choose to reapply. I ended up waiting all summer and not getting in. I retook the mcat and did 1 pt better but did not bring up my verbal like I needed to. So I don't think it had much of a positive influence. This year, I am wait listed again, but without any bold typing. I have looked to strengthen my application in other areas, but I think my mcat is still my downfall.

Anyways, as far as bold typing goes, who knows how the committee works. I guess calling and hoping for an honest answer is the only way to find out.

Good luck to all who are waiting.

thanks for the info. I didn't receive any bold typing either. For those of you who haven't received your letter yet, you can email Ms. Harris. In general, i've been having some trouble with my mail so I told her and she actually attached the letter to me through email.

Also, I emailed Mr. Strother regarding my position on the waitlist. I'm an out of state applicant and he sent an email that I couldn't quite understand. He didn't give me a position when I asked for it and I am not sure how much I should count on getting an acceptance when there are already so many people in-state on the waitlist.

It's just a big issue on my mind right now because I'm starting to plan for next year and I need to sign a lease with a roommate and I'm not sure if I should just withdraw my application....

What's the harm in leaving your application in the pool? If you make alternative plans and decide you don't want to go this year and end up being accepted could you not defer until next year?

I agree with Peeps. I am not planning on entering this fall even if I got in. My teaching program lasts for two years, and I was hoping to get in and defer. I don't recall if my letter had any bold type on there. I will definitely look first thing when I get home from work. Anyone get an estimate on position on the waitlist?
