There are a lot of students that live within walking distance to campus, but I have no idea how many of them are host. Did you put in your email to the housing committee that you needed a place within walking distance? If you haven't, I would email them and let them know ASAP.

Yup, I emailed the housing committee. No reply yet, but I realized a friend of mine lives in San Antonio, so I will crash with him. 🙂

ZYME, do you know if SA sends out more prematch offers after the first wave? I interviewed there last week and Dr. Jones talked about prematch offers but didn't say anything about additional ones.

I believe last year they sent out 2 more batches of prematches after the first for a total of 3. I have no idea how many total prematch offers will be made, but I do know a lot of people in my class seemed to have prematched last year. Good Luck!

What would you guys say are the top signs an interview went well?

I had an interview recently that I thought went really well and I'm try to stay positive... :xf:

-Interviewer gave me his business card and told me to "look him up if I got to their school"
-Interviewer gave me a CD of a lecture he'd attended and enjoyed.
-Interview was longer than normal 30 minutes
-Interviewer and I also chatted pleasantly about non-interview things like hope from doctors to patients + benefits of this, patient contact, what type of doctors he really admires, etc... all of this "off the record" as he said. We also shared stories about our parents' illness and how its hard to have a parent die when you're young.
-Interviewer seemed impressed by my "pretty GPA" (closed file interview but he asked and I told him)
-Interviewer smiled and laughed several times and was very pleasant with me, after grilling me a tiny bit at the beginning.
-I didn't ramble, but rather gave succinct, appropriate answers (my biggest goal for this interview because I had a problem with rambling last year )

What do you guys think? Also, how do you gauge if an interview went well? :luck:

Well, all of those things seem quite positive. Unless there's an argument during the interview, I would say that going over the allotted time is a good sign. I got great, kind words from one of my interviewers in SA and didn't get a prematch, though I've prematched at four others. I'm not sure what it was, but it could have been that my second interviewer didn't seem too happy.

Good signs:
*Laughing
*Overtime Interview (when it goes into OT, it's always a good time, haha)
*Positive compliments
*Stating an advantage the interviewer believes you have over other applicants
*I think handing out the card is a good sign, but it is possible that they hand it out to everyone. The CD though, seems to be a stronger indication that you two hit it off 🙂
*Mix tape. If your interviewer made you a mix tape of his/her favourite songs after reading your file, you're in. hahaha.

Also, some students like to try to get the interviewer to talk more and think THAT'S a good sign, but that only works to a certain extent, imo. If only the interviewer talks, then you have left them with absolutely no impression of who you are to distinguish yourself from the others.

my two cents

oh, and best of luck to all of you! I can't wait to be able to look back at this frantic time and laugh.

My first interviewer and I hit it off well, he is a retired Ortho and my father is an amputee so we chatted about that for awhile, after that he told me that the list of questions they give him are useless and then he made a crude joke about his wife ... I took that as a good sign. My second interview was with an MS4 and we talked about fishing alot, plus he had just finished a rotation at a hospital that I worked at for we found common ground with those things.

The best part though was after the interviews were over a fellow applicant who had my first interviewer after me asked me what I thought of him. I told him I thought he was a pretty cool old guy, and the other guy told me he thought he was an *** Then moments later the interviewer walked by us, winked at me and patted me on the back.

I think that was a pretty good sign, I prematched on the 13th.

I think that is funny, because I was that fellow applicant you are talking about. I didn't mean that he was that bad; he just seemed to be very narrow-minded. He was the worst interviewer I have had during the application season.
Anyway, I was accepted on the 13th as well.

P.S. They have probably accepted you because you wrote a thank you note LOL

I will be interviewing on December 14th. Original e-mail invite was for December 7th, but I have 4 finals and 2 interviews that week so I requested the later date... I hate that I pushed it back, but I had to for my own sanity with finals & other interviews.

Look forward to making the trip to UTHSCSA!! I have heard wonderful things!

No one has seemed to post this yet, so I figured I would. I interviewed on 10-16, just after that first pre-match batch. Dr. Jones said the class size was 220. He said they have already filled 110 in that first prematch batch. This leaves (approximately) 100 left in the class. Dr. Jones said they will leave 50 spots available for the match. He said they will pre-match 50 more students before the match in 2 or 3 more pre-match batches (like ZYME said).

Good luck to you all.

These numbers seem off... the class size will be around 220, but according to US News 428 students were accepted last year (out of 1092 interviewed). If they have accepted 110 students already, that means sometime between now and start of classes there are over 300 more acceptances to be handed out!

Does anyone know if we can still receive prematch acceptances at this point in time?

Thanks a bunch.

That sounds legitimate to me. I'll bet that's on par with where other med schools around the country are at this point.

pre-match offers are useful only if there is a chance of the student accepting them or if the offer itself may sway the student at all. Offers that are declined are useless. If I ran a school like UTHSCSA I'd extend those offers only to people who expressed a desire to be at that school or to students I knew other schools passed up, but who had proven themselves to be excellent students. In short, sending out pre-match offers that will be declined in order to go to UTSW are of now value.

Plus, lets say anyone interviewed Nov and later aren't considered for pre-match offers. That's a lot of students.

You can receive a prematch offer until the end of December.

School give out way more offers that they have spots because a lot of students get multiple offers and many of those offers get declined. People can hold onto multiple acceptances until, I believe, January 15th.

Say UTHSCSA sends out a total of 200 prematch offers (I am making these numbers up). Say that 100 of those went to people who also prematched at other schools. There is a chance that all 100 of those offers will be declined by Jan. 15th. If they are, that leaves a total of 100 prematch offers made going into the match. People will still have the option of ranking other schools above UTHSCSA. If 50 people who prematched to UTHSCSA rank another school higher and get it, that leaves a total of only 50 prematch offers that lasted and roughly 170 spots for the match. That alone is a total of 370 offers.

Did that help anyone? Or just make it more confusing? 😀

I didn't mean to be confusing, or incorrect. I was under the impression that those were correct numbers. Dr. Jones definitely said he was saving 50 spots for the match. He said they like to leave spots open for the match. Hopefully they'll give out a lot more prematch before then. Good luck to everyone.

OMG I got a prematch at UTSA about 10 minutes ago!!! I had no idea more were going out today!! This is one of my top 2 so I'm super pumped now!!!

I also just received a pre-match offer today (11/23).

I will be declining it since I've already been accepted at UTSW w/ a kickass scholarship. So hopefully my offer will go to someone else soon!

Good luck guys 🙂

Hi guys,
Just got my acceptance to UT San Antonio today, my first acceptance! I have interviewed at 4 Texas schools and got no love on Nov. 13 so I am super happy to get this. To those who didn't get an acceptance on pre match day, don't give up hope it is still so early!

What's up all? I just got accepted today as well! This must be the second wave of prematches!

Best of luck to everyone!

Yo guys, just wanted to tell you all that my friend had an interview on Oct 28th and pre-matched today.

Hi guys,

Yay congrats!! 😀 That's a great feeling... I'm still holding out for my first acceptance :luck:

When did you interview, if you don't mind me asking?

Congratulations to the second batch of prematchers!!! At our interview today, Dr. Jones said that 50 seats would be left for the match and they expected to give out another 50-70 prematch offers between now and then.

How'd your interview go?

For those of you who received pre-match offers on 11/13/09, have you received the acceptance packet in the mail? It was my understanding that they were mailing them out the same day the email went out, but I still haven't received mine. Just worried there might be some time-sensitive stuff in there. I'll call later, but thought I'd check in with you guys first.

You should call--I live in DC and I received mine on Saturday. You have to return a form by the first or second week in December (I can't remember now) so I would definitely call and make sure they have your address right so you don't get messed over.

I live in Dallas, and I didnt get mine till Saturday. Depending on where you live I might give it a few days more before you call. I also think that your acceptance email said to correct/change your address through TMDSAS.

How'd your interview go?

I think it was one of my better ones. All your interviewers have is your tmdsas essay. They just wanted to see if I matched the essay and then spent 15 minutes talking about all the awesomeness of UTHSCSA. They both followed the same format and asked if I had any questions at the end. I interviewed with two M.D.s

Check that! I just sent my response in, but if you prematched on the 13th then your response deadline is Dec. 1. With the holiday coming up I would call the school if you dont receive it by today. Better safe than sorry.

When did you guys who got prematched yesterday interview? and congratulations.

I just got an email for a interview on December 14. I am pretty shocked on receiving this one. This will make studying for finals difficult for sure. Lukily grades are a lower priority now.

Does anyone "in the know" and/or a current student know if this is essentially interviewing for a waitlist spot? I really love this school and I am really excited to have the opportunity to interview though.
