Haha, wow!

Congrats. It was an ENORMOUS snow storm though.

Define emormous... that word brings back memories of a snow storm we had my sophomore year of high school, when the snow was so deep that my car was buried, and it wasn't in a drift.
Was your sophomore year of high school 2003? And were you living in the shenandoah valley or maryland or that area somewhere? It's on that scale as far as depth. (18" here), but it covers much more of the east coast this time. (I think 25" in philly)

It was in 2003, but I was living in Denver, CO. I think we got like 4 feet of snow. Really heavy, wet snow that actually shut down the city for a couple days. We were out of school from Tuesday til Friday, and the government offices were barely opening up on Friday. Which, you know, is pretty hard to do in a city that gets a fair amount of snow every year.

!

I told you my car got buried. My puppy had lots of fun jumping up into the snow drifts, though 🙂

Of course, this was at my house, which was in the corner of a housing development (and thus subject to more blowing snow and accumulation, even if it didn't look much like drifts from our end). Apparently the official estimates were closer to 2 1/2 feet (in the Denver area. Some of the mountain towns got 7.25 feet). Still quite a bit of snow, though, and considered the worst blizzard since 1913. I'm not sure if the blizzard in 2006 surpassed it or not, but that one was pretty bad in Colorado Springs. Our school was actually closed for that one, which didn't even happen when we got a good foot of snow.

I have been complete since the end of July and I've not heard a word. A friend of mine was complete after me and received a letter of rejection about a month ago. Anyone have any advice about my chances at an interview? I'm out of state but do have ties to the university... Should I give up hope? I'm just trying to be realistic.

Our stats are quite similar -

I'm in-state and hoping for an interview as well.

Your extrac's🙂 are pretty awesome!

We can hope for the best....

Same here, except I was complete in September. Also, we have very very similar stats as well.

I think they got around 2 feet. A big storm, but yeah, there are bigger ones out west.

Thanks medman and Istone! Yeah I guess we just wait and :xf:. Maybe we'll get some news in the new year. Good luck to all and let me know if you hear anything for sure

Complete 9/24, Interview Invite 12/22, Interview 2/11. UVa is my top choice and was the first secondary I sent out. I cannot wait to visit, but I am definitely worried about how late my interview is. With the rolling admissions, I feel like my chances have to be relatively slim. But who cares...UVa is incredible. I have watched that video like 8 times. Good luck to everyone else!

I too recently got an interview here on 1/26, I really hope we aren't interviewing too late, this school seems incredible, probably my top choice too

I am OOS. Hoping for the best. Like I said before, I love UVa but am worried the rolling admissions will doom me. Does anyone know if schools tend to interview the same amount of applicants throughout the interview process or do they decrease the number of interviews as acceptances go out? And out of curiosity, do people often reach a final decision on medical school before May 15th (and release their spots at other schools)?

I was complete around then too (still waiting to hear from them though)! That gives me hope! Congrats on the interview invite!

I don't think you should assume the rolling admissions will doom you. I don't have any internal info, but remember that schools are also taking on an expense to have you over for an interview. They aren't wasting their resources just to interview people for a waitlist or rejection. Is there a difference in odds? Possibly, but there also could be a difference in the applicant pool, you just don't know. If you have a solid application, and you hit the interview hard, I think you can feel confident in your chances.

Regarding waitlist movement, it seems that most of that does start in early May before the deadline, but some could also start after financial aid packages go out which I believe is in April (though I'm not 100% sure, I need to check that). I know UVA interviews until March, so I wouldn't expect waitlist movement before the interview season is over.

Good luck...let me know if you have any interview-specific questions.

interviewed december 17th, accepted today. letter sent out the 18th.

Four things.

1. I had 23 inches of snow on my front lawn Saturday at noon. It proceeded to snow another 10 hours almost non-stop. So I'd guess we had around 30 inches when it was over.

2. A snowy weekend in Charlottesville is one of the greatest things ever.

3. UVa is very flexible in their class size, meaning that spots are always open. I interviewed the last day last cycle and was told there were still spots. The last day is going to be sometime in early March, so for you February interviews, don't worry.

4. The waitlist is interesting, and I don't think anybody outside of the adcom could explain it. I miraculously got off it last year in the middle of June after they were still well overbooked 7 days earlier. So like I said, they are very flexible with the size of the class.

Bottom line is that if you like the school and still don't have an interview, write to Dr. Canterbury. The school is very open to receiving updates and interest/intent letters. That's what helped me out the most last year, and I know it's helped people this year also. Any questions go ahead and send me a PM.

Question for you guys. I got accepted December 11th. I sent in my Class Reservation Form on the 15th and still haven't received confirmation. I was wondering if the admissions office is closed for the holidays? I've tried calling Janet Small, interview coordinator, but no response. Is there someone else I should contact? Is the office even open?

Thanks

Hey ThatQuestionGuy,

I got my confirmation on Dec 7 after I sent my reservation in on the 24th of November. I think 2 weeks+ is normal and they've been slammed with snow so the office is probably backlogged. Wouldnt worry about it.

Hope to meet you next year.

Pete

Thanks, just got an email replying that they are short staffed with the holidays and the snow and not to worry.

FYI: 2010 revisit is March 20

For those of you who have already been accepted to U.Va. School of Medicine, I'd like to direct you to our Craigslist ad for 2-bedroom apartments on Brandon Avenue, which is as close to the medical campus and hospital as you can get, and equally proximal to everything that makes U.Va. a unique place, such as the Lawn, Rotunda, the Corner bars/restaurants, etc.:

http://charlottesville.craigslist.org/apa/1532248958.html

We offer long-term lease discounts to medical students. Many of our tenants decide to stay in these apartments through the entire four years of medical school.

Also, if you are interviewing at U.Va. School of Medicine in the upcoming weeks/months and foresee having free time before/after the interview, feel free to contact me in advance to arrange an apartment viewing. My contact information is in the Craigslist link above.

I am also an applicant this year and still awaiting an interview invite from U.Va.

Best of luck to all SDNers!

I'm in Southwest Virginia. We had about two feet and some serious ice once when I was around 10 and we missed like 49 concurrent days of school! It stayed so incredibly cold for so long and nothing would melt. Add the fact that there's not a straight road anywhere near Southwest Virginia and you can see the issue! 🙂

When I was really young we had snow that was at least 4 feet deep - I vividly recall not being let outside to play because it was over my head - but it was during Winter break so it didn't affect school much.

This snow was pretty significant in recent times... hence the delays at UVa. Still, I don't know that we'll ever see a four foot snow again!

Bottom line is that if you like the school and still don't have an interview, write to Dr. Canterbury.

I did that and just got a generic reply from mrs oswald (?) saying there was no way to determine the status of my application with the volume of applicants they have

Cool. How'd you find out? Any other details like how long it'll be, possible accommodations, etc?

I sent an email to admissions, and someone wrote me back (? who it was).

No other details, just the date. I think that minority students have a longer revisit, starting on the Friday...at least it appeared that way last year. For the rest of us, it looks like a one day deal.

Did anybody who has been accepted for a while receive a certiphi screening email recently/today?

Yup, just got it, and already submitted.

so it appears that trying to get in touch with dr. cantebury is not helpful after all?

I've talked to a handful of applicants who wrote to Dr. Canterbury and received in an invite shortly after.

Now, be realistic. You're not going to get an invite just because you write him a letter. But what you will do is call attention to your application again and show to the committee your interest in the school. Multiple letters aren't a bad thing. With that being said, don't write one if you don't have anything new to add to your application if you've already written about your interest in the past. Every letter I wrote pre-invite contained significant updates to my application. They weren't fluff letters. Ultimately my thought last year was that I had one chance to do this, and I was going to do whatever I could to get a spot here.

I obviously can't guarantee anything for anybody, but if a school is willing to listen to you, give them what you've got. I absolutely despise schools who consider your application closed once you've submitted it. Things do change over the course of a year, and you should be able to let them know. Good luck. And as always, any questions just ask me.

Thanks UVAbme2009

I'm still going to give it a shot. I've got a few updates to add to my file and hopefully that will give me a boost. Also, I'm glad I caught the fact that it's Canterbury instead of Cantebury.

I did, and just submitted it. The address part is always going to be the most difficult part for me.

😱 You win. I'm glad that VA actually gets snow though. I lived in SC for two years, and got nothing. After living in Colorado for like 7 years, it was rather depressing.

And just FYI- someone did make a facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=166839691484

The great thing about it was we left for Christmas break around the 20th like usual... the 49 concurrent days were the next 49 days in January/February we were supposed to go! So, we were out of school for a long... long time! Nothing quite like that kind of break when you're 10!!! :meanie:

I second (or third or fourth at this point?) sending follow-up letters as necessary to the powers that be. When the decision time comes to pull someone off the wait list you want to have your name fresh in their minds. Two equal applicants... both on the wait list... one has consistently written letters with file updates / intent and the other has been dormant... which would you pick?

I got the same background check email today from Certphi. No biggie, took about 5 min.

Did anybody who has been accepted for a while receive a certiphi screening email recently/today?

Thanks guys. Sometimes a certiphi notification will come just before an acceptance at a school, and I was waiting on another decision this week. That doesn't appear to be the case, though. 👍

The interviews are one-on-one, correct? Do they go by fast?

correct. there are 2 interviews, 30 minutes each...and they do go by pretty fast. the interviewers are really good though since they ask pretty open-ended questions and give you plenty of time to sell yourself.

so i know this is really early, but since i already go to school here, i pretty much know where i want to live. about when do you all think you will start figuring out housing? my parents are freaking out thinking i wont get other people to sign on afterwards if i go ahead and put the apartment in just my name for now. how were you guys going to go about finding roommates.. sdn? facebook?? thanks

I'm still waiting to hear from my first choice, so I'm a little leery about making plans for an apartment right now (I'll know more one way or the other at the end of March). But, I imagine second look is going to be a good place to start. Facebook seems to be pretty good at that as people finalize their decisions (I imagine around May 15th).

Interview invite today (finally 🙂) for Feb. Applied sometime in late Sept, I think. UVa student, IS.
