2024-2025 Virginia Tech (Carilion)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To my active status pool girls--I'm a little confused on this most recent email. I suppose I was under the impression that we could be admitted in the April round of acceptances, but this newest email makes it sound like it's either WL or R. What do people think?

I am also confused… the email about active status pool says we would be considered for April round of acceptance but todays email only mentions waitlist/R

Hahaha I appreciate their attempt at transparency but what da heck - also what’s voting group 4? Is that the same as active status?

I was also confused by the email. I'm also wondering if "voting group 4" means there are groups ahead of us that will be re-considered first?

I think they just split us all into voting groups to make it easier for them aka it's a meaningless designation.
Regardless, I think it's just an email saying to remain patient because we're all not going to hear anything until April at which point they'll first break us into WL vs R. Then from the WL list to either A or R.

Overall, just an update email from them lol. The first paragraph kind of hurt to read though as a non-acceptance holder...

This is why I’m confused. The language in both emails implies very different things
The active status notification was vague. Based on previous cycles on SDN, the wording from todays email is accurate. The active status becomes a ranked waitlist and VG4 will be voted on this waitlist and subsequently considered for April admissions.

Hey guys, does anyone know what the attire is for the meet and greet event the night before the interview? I haven't been able to find any details on it.

Also, for those who have interviewed already, is any portion of the day outside? It looks like temps are going to be well below freezing when I'm there.
Business casual, and the interview day is mostly indoors. Hope this helps!

I don't know abt when the next wave is, but what I do know is if they call, ANSWER!! Doesn't matter if you haven't had an interview yet, they might be calling to offer you one last minute if someone dropped out. It'll say Virginia Tech on the caller ID. Be sure your phone settings allow anyone to call you and not automatically send them to voicemail.
New to this thread here but how exactly does this work? Wouldn't it make sense for them to email you first instead of calling? Seems unusual for a school to offer an ad hoc interview like that and expect applicants to be available.

I imagine their mindset is if you want the spot, you'll figure out how to get there

To be honest, I haven't heard of a school calling randomly for an interview unless they emailed you prior and haven't heard back, but are trying to confirm...

OOS II. Does anybody know about rescheduling interview dates? I cannot go in person that weekend.

+1 II but I think I’m going to have to decline. My boss would kill me if I requested another day off

I would email them and see if you can do it virtually. I believe they have one interview weekend a month.

OOS II earlier today
LM 72 CA ORM
does have a relatively low post II acceptance rate compared to others but still excited

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what is the "active status pool" I haven't gotten any emails but I also submitted my secondary kind of late. What did the email say?

weirdly specific question but my boyfriend is driving me to my interview and we’re staying in the hotel of the mingle session Friday night am I allowed to bring him if he comes in business casual?? Or is it strictly for interviewees only

I interviewed back in august and attended the mingle session. Don’t bring your bf, this is a connection event for applicants.

Edit: I also don’t think the committee will look at that positively!

Given the nature of the event, being there myself, I would not bring him to the Friday reception. Everyone has to check in and they give out pre-made name tags, I just think it would be a little out of place!

Ahhh gotcha okay and does it go until 8 or is it like more come and go??

I recommend getting there when it starts, time passes very quickly. I did not see people leaving early other than staff/medical students. Take the opportunity to get to know the students and staff. I met a wonderful group of applicants who I had breakfast and lunch with the next day! It's natural to be nervous and anxious at first. Don't worry, I'm sure the bf can entertain himself for a couple of hours lol

Is this true?
I don't know where you got that, but I wouldn't pay any attention to it. Every year changes with a different pool of applicants, and at a school like VT where there are only 50 students per class, I would say that the sample size is too low to give this any weight.

I think this post is for all matriculants to all schools. Not sure why this person posted it here though or how we're supposed to know it's true...

Looking at the website, it looks like it's an overall composite number, and I believe the AAMC posted data on scores and GPA by race. To your point, no idea why it was posted here. It looks like they posted this on several different threads. Pretty odd

Current M1 at VTC, feel free to ask or DM any questions about the curriculum, Roanoke, extracurriculars/opportunities, etc! Good luck to you all!
1. On average, how much time do you spend doing required classes/PBL sessions per day?
2. Are you able to easily gain early exposure to shadowing/clinical experience?
3. How is your living situation/what do you do for fun?

Thanks for offering to answer our questions! Do you have any general advice for the interview? (Obviously, understand can't discuss particulars due to NDA, but any general advice would be much appreciated!)
Also, how have you found navigating the process of finding a mentor and beginning your research project?

1. About 3-4 hours required attendance per day M-Th. Sounds long but is apparently much shorter than the old curriculum had, plus it goes by quick. PBL is 2 hours but we're usually done early. Fridays are only 3 hours and usually chill, the leader brings breakfast and we spend ~ 10 mins. finishing up the week's PBL case, ~ 30 mins. going over content, and then however long we want doing a review game we made (usually ~ 30-60 mins.). Friday PBL is followed by a "wrap-up" where a real patient with the case's disease / a similar disease comes and tells us their story and answers our questions. We're done by/before 12 every day besides Tuesdays, on Tuesdays class is flipped so it's 1-4ish (depends what we have that day).
2. YES - Carilion docs are super willing to let med students shadow. Most are easily reachable via email, plus interest group clubs and other students can connect you with mentors to shadow if interested in specific specialties. Many surgeons will let you shadow in the OR too if you ask. As for clinical experience, we have a Longitudinal Ambulatory Care Experience (LACE) that lasts ~ 1.5 years. You do LACE sessions throughout each semester in a clinic (peds, FM, neuro, ER - placement is totally random) where your preceptor will teach you, let you practice interviewing and even examining patients, and shadow them. I've found it very valuable so far, to implement all this content in a realtime setting. It's like rotations but low stakes and all about getting comfortable.
3. I live in an apartment alone, but our class has a mix of single tenets, roommates, and people living with partners. I'm happy to have my own space at the end of a long day, but spend most of the day with friends in some capacity! Housing is very affordable and easy to find. For fun, I like to hike, run/lift, play pickup sports, volunteer in town, hang with friends or family, read, and take the odd daytrip out of town. Plenty of things to do - Roanoke (mostly) has at least one of every thing you might be into.

My general advice for the interview is to be yourself! At this point you've proven you are academically fit to attend a medical school, and now they want to see what makes you different from all the other equally qualified applicants. I recommend going to the welcome event the night before if possible - it calmed my nerves and is a great way to meet students, faculty, and potential future classmates, and to get questions answered without the stress of interview day distracting you. Before each interview I attended (regardless of MMI or not), I brushed up on University of Washington's "ethics in medicine" page, and also searched online for some practice MMI scenarios. No way of knowing what you'll be asked, but I found it helpful to practice answering questions under time, how to organize my ideas, etc. Be fair, be open-minded, and be you.

There are lots of opportunities to identify a research mentor, and we have all of first semester to find one. Mentors can be through VTC, Carilion, or FBRI. Many mentors have pre-existing projects to join or projects they'd like to start soon, so there are many options for us, as well as the option to create your own project from scratch if you've got ideas. Our research deans are very willing to meet with you if you have questions or struggle to find a PI's project you like, and we had a few times where PIs came to speak to the class, and research fairs where we could "window shop" PIs. For the most part, PIs understand we have school to worry about too, and will let you be as overly or minimally involved as you want (within reason).

Awesome, thanks so much!!

Does anyone know when we're supposed to hear back from these last two interview dates? I felt like I heard March 15, but I don't remember.
