Does anyone know when we can expect to receive our financial aid packages?

I was told today the cost of attendance budgets will not be approved to May 3rd, so they cannot release preliminary awards until later that week.

Is there a link to a published proposed COA and tuition for next year? The website still shows last year...seems like a read that there is a healthy hike in tuition this year???? I can guesstimate, but I am getting sick of weak finaid packages and year old data...pretty freaking hard to compare packages.

FinAid letters delayed till first week of May

yeah, that email sucks.

I swear, I have been floating through this cycle, feeling no stress since getting my first acceptances in October, yet right now I am totally stressed out over these finaid packages...I know that the poor slobs sitting on zero acceptances or a few waitlists have it worse, but man, I haven't been this torqued over this stuff since last summer.

A couple questions:

1) What's the address for the new medical school building?
2) How are away rotations scheduled for the 20 weeks during 3rd year? Do you rank your preferences for location for each rotation? Are family ties ever taken into account?

I don't know the exact address of the new building, but I can tell you where it is on google maps with an approximate address. The address of the building next to it is 415 Lane Rd.

This is when it was a hole in the ground. It's much nicer now.

I received an email earlier today that I received a merit scholarship. Stunned. I'm so nervous that it's some sort of mistake...

That's great news. Congratulations. I hope that you're celebrating right now!

Tuition & fees (to be approved 4/30);

IS $37,880 up 7.8%.
OOS $48, 874 up 8.2%.

Increase due to "recent curriculum changes & is appropriate for the Med School's current tuition & indebtedness rankings among peers".

Those numbers are about what I exected. I'm going to live in an apartment at 512 Brandon Avenue. I was mainly looking for proximity to campus and a relatively cheap one-bedroom apartment with off-street parking and laundry.

oo... do u know if there are any more vacancies for one-bedroom apartments there?

i think i'm going to drive there this weekend and take another look around.

No idea about the Brandon Avenue thing, but they're literally a block from the lawn, the medical education building and the south lawn project. The other places that were in that area cost a fortune and I wanted to live alone, so I'm happy with it. The rent is $650 + utilities + some hidden fees that will likely upset me later.

Can we talk about the things that we need to do before matriculation? When is the BLS thing due? Where should we do it? When are transcripts due? Are there immunization sheets that they need from us before a certain date? We need to fill out a community service survey before June.

Wow congrats! Will you be accepting this scholarship/matriculating here?
Thank you (and to everyone else as well)! Yes, I'm definitely matriculating at UVa now. A potentially large price differential between here and the state school I like more was my only reason for hesitating - that's a moot point now.

BLS is really easy to get through the Red Cross. I'm going to renew mine a bit early (it expires in September) through the hospital I work at so that I don't have to pay for it.

I imagine transcripts are mid-July, start of August. Definitely before Aug 9. There's a health form that we have to get filled out (it's rather long and complicated, and involves a two step PPD), but last I checked, it hasn't been posted to the student health website yet. That's not due until Aug 31.

Awesome!! 🙂

OK, UVA, where are the finaid letters? Time's up.

The BOS met Friday and voted on tuition, so when can we expect our letters? Anybody know if it will be snail mail, or email, or simply posted on the SIS site?

I had talked with my assigned financial aid counselor about getting an estimate of my package in years 2-4 as my financial situation will be changing significantly, and she had to call her when I received "the email with your eligibility for 2010/11". So hopefully an email today or tomorrow?

You're deciding between here and Yale, right?

nope, UVA and NYU - Yale missed the cut...the place frankly kind of weirded me out - I didn't feel like it was a good fit for me.

yeah financail aid stuff will go out today via email.

Looking at that just made me upset

If you read the news reports of the BOS meeting, and the indications from elsewhere within UVA, they fully expect they will have to ratchet these higher next year, too, because of anticipated shortfalls in state support next year.

UVA is a great school, but the instaters get a pretty raw deal compared to most other state med schools. The COA differential for me between my instate public and NYU, an out of state private, is not that much as far as I am concerned, certainly not enough to make attending UVA a financial no-brainer...in my opinion, that is...YMMV.

Well yeah, but I was wondering if they mentioned a specific time.

And the COA at comparable schools like Emory and NYU is 72K and 69K, respectively, so it's roughly the same for OOS and about 10K cheaper for IS, not to mention a higher standard of living. Looking at MCV's COA, UVA is only 6K more. I could easily be misinterpreting these numbers because I don't know much about finance, but it doesn't seem like too bad of a deal. I would definitely prefer UNC's 43K COA, though.

lol nah, i didn't ask. Go outside tho - hittin up the refresh button dosen't do any good. Check back at 5.

Nothing here, did anyone hear back?

nuttin', and I am sick of it.

Pretty lame they didn't get those out today. The only thing they were waiting on was approval of the proposed tuition and fees, so I don't understand how these weren't ready to send out today.

I want to end all of this and move forward with my final decision. God this app cycle stuff never ends...at least I am not waiting on waitlist movement - that must really suck.

yeah i didn't get anything either. I was told they'd go out today, too.
Don't know what happened.

VCU's tuition is $9000 cheaper for in-state students. Maybe I shouldn't have withdrawn from their waitlist.

Hi Bryson, I see you're accepted at both UVa and Dartmouth- did you go to second look/visiting days for both of them? How are you leaning? I'm currently trying to make a decision between the two...

I only went to Dartmouth's second look. I'd say I'm leaning toward UVA now, but they both have a lot of perks. Let's see what financial aid says.

Yes, I'm anxiously waiting for finaid. I think that with many other things being equal, UVA's preclinical education seems more forward-thinking- but the decision is certainly a difficult one!

:soexcited: Woot! Financial aid e-mail arrived this morning. Wow. I didn't expect UVA to be the most generous of all my offers.

I got mine this morning and it's more generous than I had hoped for. Thank you UVA! :soexcited:
