I sent in a request when I got the invite earlier this month, but just received an email back saying: "Unfortunately, our students cannot accommodate you with overnight housing. The following hotel is recommended: ....."

The recommended hotel is $280/night. :wow:

what really? i emailed them a week or so ago and was able to get a student host. is your interview at least in the afternoon? all the hotel options seemed relatively far away.

For anybody interviewing in pretty much any major city, i'd recommend airbnb.com. Much cheaper than a hotel, and most of the hosts are lovely people who can help you out with getting around the city.

(and no, they didn't pay me to say it. just a fan. 😛)

can i contact these guys to say Im in the area in october? Im from the west coast, so this is not a very occasional event

for hotels in the area, try sites like hotwire.com

i got a night at a decent hotel for $80...it might be a 20-30 min drive (i'll be driving), so i'm not sure what is available/cheap in the more immediate area

Thanks a billion, T1R3KO! For this one and the earlier route as well! Sorry to put you through the trouble since I totally forgot that there was such a thing as Google Transit :smack:

Asyouwereatrio - are you staying with a student host? I'm also arriving on a Sunday, and that isn't problematic if you want to stay with a student host, right?

Yepppers I am staying with a student host!

Thanks!

I also found out that there are these buses that will take you from JFK or LaGuardia to Grand Central Station (for $15), and from there, you can walk 0.5 miles to the BxM10 stop on Madison & 52nd. It probably costs a bit more than taking the subway, but it sounds like it might be simpler (or maybe it only sounds that way to me because I've never been on the subway before)

Haha at least you know it's called a subway. I use the Canadian term "metro" and like, all my friends make fun of me for calling it a metro. My friend who went to AECOM and Downstate for interviews was like "do NOT call it a metro or people will think you're weird and not want to help you!"

I'm tempted to use your Grand central Station idea...do you have a link for hte info? I'm coming in on Sunday morning..early...so like, Idk if it'd be running yet.

Well I found this link: http://www.nyairportservice.com/page.php?id=30
I got it off of About.com - I hope it's legit. Also, do I have to say something like "I'm not endorsing this, I just found it online"?

Metro = trains in California, right? xD

Thanks for hte info! I'm buying a ticket for my inbound ride into Manhattan soon! No need to deal with AirTrains and whatnot. I'd rather pay 15 bucks to not have to worry lol.

Awesome, invited to interview! I'm confused though, when we request a student host do we do it before the interview is scheduled, or after we have a date confirmed?? Thanks for the help 🙂

Never mind, I think we are supposed to do it before scheduling. I re-read the page and that's the impression I got anyway. Can't hurt!

I'm confused by your post. YOu're supposed to schedule your interview PRIOR to requesting a student host. How will they know when to arrange for a host if you don't have an interview date?

Oops. Oh well.

I know that makes sense, and it makes sense to me, but on the webpage, it just says "please send us an e-mail" and that's the page explaining the interview... I guess I took them literally! I guess I am too literal of a person..

There's always the Best Western Bronx Inn. It's in a sketchy area but the hotel itself is pretty nice. Pretty cheap too and it's only a few minutes away form the school if you drive or take a taxi

if you are ever in the DC area... the train system here is called metro.

Oh, but I mean do you literally refer to the train itself as a "metro"...just like you would call a subway a subway, would you call a subway a metro? Like, in DC, is metro simply the name of the company?

I'm sure it's the same as how Chicagoans call the train the L/el even when it's in the subway and clearly not elevated.

DC
1: How are you getting to work?
2: Taking the metro

NY
1: How are you getting to work
2: *****ASDASJHARNF(*SA oh.. subway

i think its te correct way

Haha Thanks to both of you for examples. My friend isn't so right after all 😛

Some of the locals in NYC call it the "el" as well, particularly where it is elevated, such as Queens. Subway is still by far the most common term, and metro is just wrong.

BTW, I used to live in Queens and I wouldn't really suggest taking the buses for the majority of the trip. The subways are amazingly convenient and fast, and you won't hit traffic like you will on a bus. I took the subway every day while living there and took the bus exactly twice.

If you are arriving in JFK, one option is to take the Airtran to Jamaica, where you can hop on either a subway or the LIRR. The LIRR will be faster since it is a train that will go direct to Penn Station with 0-2 stops. Once you are at Penn you can take the subway to the bronx as per the instructions on AE's site.

If you are arriving in LaGuardia, you can take the M60 to the N subway in Astoria, and transfer through the subways up to the Bronx.

That's what I'd do anyway.

First interview invite ever! 🙂 I'm a re-applicant with no interviews last year, so I'm so excited!! 🙂

Submitted secondary 7/19 never got the complete email so not sure when I was complete, but I'd give it 1-2 weeks after submission date. Interview invite 8/27
GPA 3.26 (long story, but last 4 years of undergrad were 3.98 and s4.0)
MCAT 39R

😍Einstein would be an absolute dream for me so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :xf:

Hey guys,

I might just be dense, but do you know how to check the status of the secondary? When I log back into the secondary website, it just says "Certification" and has stuff for the secondary, but there isn't anything about status...

Any thoughts? 🙄

There isn't a status check website. Just gotta wait til they send you the complete email, which should come sometime a few weeks to maybe a month after you sent it in.

That's what I thought, but I called and the lady kept telling me there was a status check on the website with the secondary. But she kept saying "it's on the application, not a website..."

No idea what that meant but she said she was reading it off the application. No idea...😡

Maybe she was just referring to where it tells you that you've already submitted?

I haven't been able to find any status check, either. Doesn't sound like it exists.

Yep, I am finding most of the staffers to be rather clueless. Nice, but clueless. Harvard being the exception: plain nasty - not allowing me to determine their clue vs no clue status.

how long did it take them to email you back regarding a student host?

also, how long do they let you stay with a student host?

I'm glad you guys mentioned this..because it says on the website somewhere that there would be a status button, but I couldn't find it. Then I emailed the school and they said:

"If you log into your secondary application the status will be on the left hand side of the page above your name. Due to the fact that we have a large number of applications, we are completing applications in the order they were received. When we are up to your folder and we have everything that is needed we will send you an email completing you."

But I logged back in, and still no such status--actually, I don't see my name anywhere on the left side. So I don't know..maybe we have to wait until they're up to our folder and send us a complete email?

I submitted end of July...still no complete status. I guess I should email them?

I'm in the same boat as you, submitted end of July and she said the same stuff about a status link on the left. She said she saw it but I'm not sure what she's talkin about...

+1 The only thing I can think is maybe their administrator website has the aforementioned link but not the applicants. I just checked again and could not find a link either. Oh Einstein! 😱

lol guys forget the status link. I believe PhD candidates have one after entering "application status" on their website. only way we'll see a status button is if someone demands one haha.

I got invited for an interview, but in the meantime I checked all of my app sites religiously, even for Einstein which did not appear to update at all. I never saw ANY change in the secondary site no matter my status (submitted, completed, interview invite, etc.). n=1, but I would say there is no status check through the site 🙂

Alright, third interview 🙂 not till november 29th though! I submitted my secondary on june 30th! Maybe they offered after relooking at me but ill take it!

That's interesting. Congrats!!

I think I sent everything in either end of July or early August and finally got the complete e-mail today. Oh Einstein...I want an interview so I can go visit my cousins! haha.

For those of you who are staying with student hosts, about how much time elapsed between the e-mail you sent requesting a student host and the reply? I e-mailed about a week ago - I'm hoping to get a reply soon so I can book my flight! Thanks!

weird...the lady emailed me back the next morning...

I'm sure that this has been asked a million times already, so excuse my laziness, but how long has it taken most people to get a "complete" email (or is there none)?

I submitted my secondary a couple of weeks ago and have heard nothing since.

Thanks. Looks like I shouldn't expect anything for another couple of weeks.

Were you able to get a student host? Oh dear, I hope this doesn't mean that she's having trouble finding someone to host me 🙁 , although that's probably what's going on ><

Same. I received a complete email last week but don't have a "status" button.

I know that a few people have posted the above, but...... I DO have a Status button located on the left side menu.. When I click, i get a screen that reads... " File under Preliminary Review..."

May be that button shows up after a while.. I have been complete now for about a week (since i got their email)

Wow great find Brain. I never noticed the Status button for some reason. It's on the left side of the menu. I think they added it or it appeared after logging in and clicking on "First page" then I saw it.

Mine says "Preliminary Review Completed" I submitted early July, no interview invite yet.

Yep, just found the status button as well. When I click, mine says "Status about to change" :xf:

I've been complete since the 08/23 so I don't know if this is good news or bad news...lets hope it changes to "interview tomorrow". You bet i'll be checking my email every 5 mins

It is true - a "STATUS" tab does exist now! Mine reads "Preliminary Screening Completed."
