For grad school stuff, dependent or independent also doesn't mean much of anything. Sorry, I scanned it last night right before I was about to pass out from Tylenol PM.

I was under the assumption you got knocked into independent status whenever you started graduate work anyway.

I started graduate studies before the age cutoff and for tax purposes could still be considered a dependent, but when it came to filling out my FAFSA it said I was an independent and my parent's income didn't matter and had no bearing on my loans.

Once again, I didn't really read over the stuff. I'm kind of tired and cranky, so I should probably actually read what it is in regards to but I'm yet to hear of it even mattering after undergrad, especially if you aren't making any money.

Wanted to thank everyone for providing excellent questions and answers. I've just joined SDN but have referred to this thread and others throughout the application process.

Here is a list of my stats, although I've learned over the last couple years that there SEEMS to be little method to the madness. 😱

In-State, UGrad completed in 2008 GPA 3.51, MCAT 29, Substantial medical experience, AMCAS completed June 23rd, Secondary Request July 13th, All FSU Secondary Requirements completed July 26th, Interview invite extended Oct 4th, Interviewed Mid October, Accepted 2 weeks later

The best piece of advice I received that helped me out big time: "Apply early!" With rolling admissions, the earlier you complete your secondary requirements, the better...

I'd be happy to answer any questions about the interview experience for folks interviewing in the Spring!! It was truly a delightful experience. Faculty and med students were all very nice!

I still haven't heard anything either and I've been complete since the beginning of August :/ .. Do they continually review files for interview invitations?

I called admissions last week and they said they haven't gotten through the August secondaries yet. I submitted late September so I figure I probably won't hear anything until January. I might actually want winter break to fly by this year.

If you don't mind me asking. When was your application complete?
I have been complete/Under-review since 9/21....nothing yet...

Not a problem. I was complete on 8/24. Received interview invite the week of Thanksgiving and interviewed this past Friday (12/3).

Keep the faith and hang in there!

are medical students allowed to be classified as dependents for tuition purposes? I graduated from a Florida highschool and then went out of state for college. Now im coming back to go to FSUCOM. My parents still live in florida and they support me so I am a dependent. But I am not sure if medical students are allowed to claim dependency for tuition purposes. What are you all claiming on the form. I would call the office but there all closed through the weekend
I went to undergrad out of state and filed taxes independent since I started there. It wasn't a big deal at all to get in state tuition. I talked to admissions about it and just had to have my parents submit their tax returns, so it didn't matter that I had been independent.

Does anyone know if hold is different than a waitlist at FSU? I saw that some other schools use a hold-list and wait-list.

Congrats flyingsquirrel4! When did you submit your secondary? I've been complete since 10/11 and still waiting for an interview...

I submitted my secondary at the end of July. So i wouldn't worry too much if you have to wait a little while.

Hey, flyingsquirrel4! Congrats! That's awesome!

I hear news post-interview next week (interviewed December 3, a Friday).

Some quick questions if you don't mind. Did you receive an email? A call? Or both? News right after the Admissions Selection Committee met this Tuesday or did you have to wait until later on at night or the next day?

The waiting is intense! But, hopefully, all will turn out OK.

Thanks in advance.

No worries...keep the faith! I'm sure you have a great shot!

Quick question. Did you find out the decision via online status, an email, or call?

Hang in there!

Thanks in advance,

Did you find out the decision via online status, an email, or call?

Thanks, FSU is my first choice!

I saw my status change on the website (2:30ish) and then I received an email a couple hours later.

Did you see my post above? Looks like the best way to show interst is through update letters periodically like at UF.

Yes, thanks for finding that info. I will be sending an update when I have some substantial things completed.

Thanks Again!

Congratulations!!!!! It really is a great school 🙂

I think it is. I think hold is just saying they'll review you later in spring again against other interviewees. I am pretty sure though my friends who were waitlisted in the past were not put on hold but outright waitlsited.

Mosspoh, sammich, other FSU med students,

your thoughts on this????

So on the issue of hold status,

I was looking up my status and reading something on the website when I came across this:

•Acceptance - An offer of acceptance is made for the applicant to join the incoming FSU COM class. To accept the offer, applicants must submit a signed Acceptance Offer Letter, FSU Graduate Application and $30 application fee, and a Residency Form.

•Hold - The decision was made to place the applicant on hold and no offer of acceptance or notice of non acceptance is made. Final decisions of acceptance or non acceptance will be made by early June. Applicants in this category are encouraged to submit important and significant updates to the Admissions Office throughout the cycle, as updates may increase the likelihood of applicants from the Hold list being offered acceptance during the cycle. At the end of each cycle, applicants on the Hold list may be offered acceptance as withdrawals occur.

•Non-Acceptance - After careful evaluation, the applicant is informed that the Admissions Office will not be offering a position in the incoming class.

So the bolded portions are interesting.

May be a waitlist after all. And looks like they encourage the post interview updates as UF does.

Yep, that's what I've always known it was. As far as I know there's not an official wait list, just acceptance vs hold. I'm not sure the details but I think last year they also did some high priority hold list? But definitely update update update.

I just got an email.

Afternoon session, here.

Man...the waiting is rough! I think the interviews went great. But, then I start second guessing myself as to what the result next week is going to be.

Trying to hang in there!

Ah ok I was the morning session...I think I know who you are just based on your location lol. Are you the one who graduated from FIU? I was in the purple top.

I was the one who graduated from the University of Miami. I asked the 2nd years during lunch what advice they had for us.

Are you the one who had interviewed at NYMC earlier in the week or the week prior?

I will forever believe that the ONLY reasons I got in over more qualified applicants was because of the initiative I took with letters and continued interest. (without beating them to death with it)

I've told the story before, but I heard there was an open-house for accepted and prospective applicants while I was down in Ft. Lauderdale looking for an apartment. I wrote a very heartfelt letter and drove back up that night. Put on a nice shirt and tie and personally handed the letter to Dr. Patrick (who interviewed me) along with emphasizing how much I loved the school. I still was one of the last people accepted off the "hold" i.e., wait list but there was literally nothing impressive about my last semester's grades or what I did during the spring compared to many people.

has anyone received an interview invite recently? I was complete mid september and still nothing. All of the other Florida schools were super quick responding, so I am just curious if they took a break or I am just being silently rejected

I don't think they are big on the silent rejections. I know people who were outright rejected pretty fast when I was applying. I will preface my comments with the fact that I am not admissions and am not involved in any way, so I am only going by what I've seen/heard through the last couple of years.

My impression is that the first and only thing they focus on until the end of september or beginning of october is early admissions. Once that is done, they shift their attention to the compounding stack of applications for regular admissions. The admissions staff here is very small and they have their hands full. I suspect they do a bit of a combination of time application was submitted (i.e., closest to the top of the stack) with the applicant's perceived fit for the school. If they encounter someone who just doesn't seem to fit at all, whether for academics or whatever else then they get the instant rejection. The people are on the "maybe" border are left in the pile and continusouly get reviewed through.

Admittedly, they are probably also slowing down right now since break is coming up. (They still work during that time, but we all get a little daydreamy as the holidays approach)

Yeah I believe in letters of interest and updates. That's how my friend got off 3 waitlists the same year you applied. She didn't get off FSU's or USF's but she got off the ones for GW, Buffalo, and Wayne State this way. She wanted to go to GW as that was a dream school for her. So it worked out. It was one of her top two choices along with USF.

Just shows you how erratic some of this is. I know people who never got an interview here that wound up at very pretigious schools. We also have people in my class that were accepted/interviewed at Colorado, UC(can't remember which one), Pitt, Penn, Chicago, UF (we had a few accepted that chose here instead), etc. Some of the kids in my class did ridiculously great in undergrad and could've gone to different places, but whether because of financial, family or just personal interest reasons, chose here instead.

I love when I talk to my friends at other schools and they complain about their 200k+ debt and I can smuggly reply with, "Oh man. That does suck. I'm thinking I will be around 50-60k when all is said and done." I also have a little help, but they probably have a proportional amount as well.

Hey Everyone,

I have not done a great job keeping up with this site this year. Just wanted to say that everyone who is waiting should not give up! I interviewed last year in February and was on hold right up to that first day of classes...and did not get accepted. I reapplied and interviewed in early November this year...and was accepted a few weeks ago!!! I am so happy and it was certainly worth the wait. Still waiting to see how everything pans out with the rest of the year/process but I loved FSU and am very happy. Keep sending those updates!! I think it really does pay off. 🙂

Congrats, Gator8!!! Persistence pays off!!!

Reapplicant here, too. But first time interviewing at FSU.

Yeah! On that Wednesday before Friday's FSU interview.

Sweet! I was the one you spoke to about this. I told you how I hadn't heard back from NYMC and go figure I got an interview invite there yesterday. It's gonna be cold in February! 😱

Good luck buddy. 🙂

:luck: :luck:

Thx! Good luck to you as well. Did you have your UCF interview yet? I see you on a lot of the threads I'm on so I know how excited you were about it.

Nice! That's awesome and best of luck! When I interviewed that Wednesday not only was it cold but it was raining relentlessly and there were 50+ mph gusts!!! I kid you not! 😱

Btw...any news from FSU today? The final decisions were made this afternoon but I have not received an email. Maybe tomorrow?

Nope I haven't heard anything!:scared: I have been checking my email on my phone relentlessly.

For those already accepted or waitlisted, what time on Wednesday did you hear anything? Was it a call or email?

Thanks!

I did not hear anything either. No status change either. Is anyone going to bite the bullet and call tomorrow?

Ahhhhhh! Someone call...I am going crazy waiting

This is seriously torture...why tell us one day and not call? 🙁

The way it was last year was that they didn't make a decision unless your interviewers could be there. So if something came up and your faculty couldn't make it to the meeting that might push back when they let you know.

Hang in there 🙂

I was put on hold back in October, are these emails people are getting just for those without a decision or for everyone as a whole? any info would be much appreciated

Only new people who interviewed in the past 2 weeks. I was put on hold. Good luck to everyone else!

What does a hold post-interview mean exactly? Is this like their version of the waitlist?

For current students, do many people eventually get accepted off this "hold" status? Ugh, I am not happy at all about this...but of all my interviews, I guess this is the only one where I was semi-grilled on my reasons for wanting to become a doctor. Maybe I stumbled from the 1000 questions I was asked about this simple thing. 🙁

Hmm, been under review since 8/20/2010. Once the semester is over I plan to write a LOI, but giving up hope really 🙁

It depends on the year. Last year more people took the acceptance than they anticipated, so there wasn't as much movement. The year before, I got off the hold list at the last minute, so it does happen.

Accepted, here! Interviewed Friday, Dec 3.

never give up, guys.

complete 7/14/10; interview invit 12/16/10; scheduled interview 1/7/11

What a great Christmas gift! Hoping to get a great start in 2011.

Hullo...

I saw that biochem is a requirement for this school. Questions:

A- Do they accept an applicant who has not yet completed biochem requirement?
B- Does the school offer biochem for the summer to allow those unable to enroll in the course locally to take it prior to matriculation?

B1 - if they do not...do they withdraw the offer?

Thanks! I figured I'd ask here first then check with admissions...
