was anyone else who interviewed at Loyola recently told that the admissions committee would sit down on the 4th of October to decide whether or not you would be admitted and then possibly call you that day to let you know? They mentioned to me that the AAMC has a rule that they can't notify people before the 15th, but that they might be able to call us without it being in writing until the 15th. Just wondering, If I'm the only one who heard this from the admissions office? I know that they waited until the 16th last year to call people, so i just wondered if I was possibly misinformed. I LOVED this place and am super anxious to hear back from them!!

Anyone heard anything one way or the other lately about interviewing?

How long does it usually take Loyola to send you a secondary through email? My primary was submitted about a week ago.

Fairly random, some people it takes a while some people it is quick. I don't know how the progress through them but I am sure they will get to you.

In terms of interviewing and being told we could know by October 4th possibly, I was told that they would make a decision the first of October and we should know around the 16th. I hope you are right though I absolutely loved my interview at Loyola and would be ecstatic to be accepted earlier than the 15th.

In your opinion, after how long post-primary submission should I contact them about the secondary? Thanks!

So has anyone actually been rejected yet? How long does it take for a decision on one's application to be made?? i got my MCAT scores in september 14th and everything else in before then. So I'm guessing I've been complete with old scores for a while but with new scores now its been just abotu 2 weeks.

Is there any pattern to rejections like in the BU thread?? or not really? I think Avoidthetiger said they got rejected but I haven't read about anyone saying such that i recall in this thread.

So was wondering what the deal was with how they reject or how long they take to make a decision of if they just keep reviewing til spring when interviews end?

I know several people posted they were rejected via a silent status update on Loyola's web page, so they definitely don't do the "indefinite hold status" for everyone.

Oh so this may sound dense of me, but just to clarify what you are saying is that if you are rejected it will change on your status update and say rejected?? But it won't necessarily be emailed to you. you just have to check your status on the webpage you went to for the secondary????? Thanks for your help.

It's not dense at all, I was surprised that they wouldn't email you if you're rejected but lots of schools will do it by a status update only. So, you have to check your status on the webpage and it may eventually say you're rejected.

They will notify you if you're invited to interview though.

My secondary came a month after my AMCAS was verified and sent to them. Be patient, I wouldn't advise calling about a secondary until at least 3-4 weeks have passed. In the meantime, the prompts are available so start writing - this one takes awhile because it's 7 essays, up to a page long for each. That said, I think the questions are actually pretty good and allow you to show them who you are. 🙂

3-4 weeks. They take a little while and they do screen to some degree. Just wait patiently for a while.

I know it's hard, been there done that, but try to be patient when it comes to the time between submitting primary and receiving secondary. Loyola get's over 10k applications each year and between getting primaries in, sending secondaries out, and reviewing secondaries (the associate dean personally reads EVERY secondary that is submitted, which is over 5000, each with 7 essays) it gets pretty busy in there.

I would wait at least a month between submitting a primary to contact about a secondary and even longer after submitting the secondary to ask about interviews. My secondary was submitted at least 3 months before I got an interview, and I found out within two weeks after that I had been accepted. That said, do send in updates or even just call to let them know you are interested, but wait at least the month to give them time to review.

As far as rejections, Loyola will reject you if they are't interested. So if you haven't been rejected, you are being considered. Of 500 interviews, over 350 were accepted last year.

Is it appropriate to send a letter of interest/update letter? I submitted my secondary 7/30 and my application still says:

"Your file is complete and under review by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in mid-April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or email."

I know this is better than a rejection... but I am really interested in their program. I also know they get a ton of applications which takes time to go through, but I was just curious as to if they will accept materials like a letter of interest.

I actual did this at another school after I was told by my prehealth advisor that schools don't really mind. They may so no, but if you get a rejection because of it, it's most likely you would have been rejected anyway.

Anyway, it actually worked at another school I sent an email to. I was just very polite, told them I wasn't assuming an invite, and that I would make another trip if it was necessary. A couple days later, I got an invite, and was able to schedule two interviews in the same city right after the other.

I tried this last week at Loyola. I actually got a response back that said they would bring it up at the next committee meeting, and they would let me know if they grant my request by the end of this current week. So, I've been waiting patiently still with no word. Not sure if that is a good sign or bad sign. I will let you know if it works. Maybe Loyola doesn't like it.

Did this end up working? I have an interview at another school in Chicago and it would be great to be able to only take one trip there...

I personally think Loyola's an awesome school and to me, it was worth the effort of writing the essays. I think your stats are fine for Loyola, but it's up to you to decide if it's worth writing so much and spending more $$$.

Unfortunately, it did not end up working. I guess I will not complain if I have to make multiple trips up to Chicago (I applied to four schools in the area, certainly not expecting interviews from all four, but I can dream). Just more time and money. But, that is the game we are currently playing.

I just had a probably stupid question:
The MSAR says that Loyola is a catholic school. I'm just wonder, to anyone who goes there or has visted, is it *really* catholic?
As an athiest, I'm concerned about going to a school with an overly religious school.
Thanks!

The most catholic this school gets is that you have to shadow a chaplain for one day. You must attend a 1 hour lecture on Catholic medical ethics (which the majority of students really groan through when they get to the 'no birth control' part).

The biggest way that "religion" affects Loyola is that Loyola mirrors the Jesuit tradition of service and treating the human spirit.

Loyola is very welcoming of non-Catholics, and even non-Christians. We have several homosexual members of our class, not to equate atheists and homosexuals, just to highlight that Loyola is welcoming of all beliefs and lifestyles even if they don't gel with traditional Catholic beliefs. If you like service and a humanistic approach to medicine, Loyola would be a good fit.

And just to provide for a comparison, Loma Linda would be "that school" that has a significant religious influence.

Thanks!
Yeah, Loma Linda was actually the school I was thinking of. It's silly, but I kept confusing Loma Linda and Loyola (even though they're NOWHERE near eachother). Accidently ended up applying to both so I'm out 32$ for Loma Linda 😛. Shame too cause I love the part of Cali it's in.

Are the majority of students fairly religious? I went to a private charter school that had unintentionally become a Evangelical Christian school and it was pretty horrible (for example, my "friends" didn't talk to me for a week when I made an illhumored joke about the old Pope). I guess I'm just a little gunshy. I guess the best way to get an accurate opinion of the school is to submit a secondary and see if I get invited for an interview and see how that goes.

I'd say the majority are religious, but not closed and not sensitive. For instance, I consider myself a religious person, and I poke fun at christian religious figures around friends here and no one cares.

If you ever see those "friends" again, show them this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyIJ8BpNqec

Hhaha.
It was actually a funny story. I was in a journalism class and every day before John Paul died, we had to sit there and discuss all the press coverage about him. At dinner with my family, the TV was on the news and more "the Pope is SICK! OMG! " and I made a joke that he just needed to die already (not reallly funny I know). The next day, I wake up and "THE POPE IS DEAD!". I just started laughing and changed my msn status to "OMG, I killed the Pope."

Anyway, sidetracked.
Thanks for all your input! I'll submit a secondary and see what happens!

Just got the secondary. Took exactly 3 weeks from when I added them to my primary.

finally complete! Submitted 9/13.

My application JUST got complete, and I was wondering how long people typically wait to hear back from admissions?

I've been complete since early August and am still waiting...

guess we're in this boat for awhile huh...oh well :xf::xf::xf: in an ideal situation the adcoms will log onto SDN and read how anxious we are to attend and gives us interviews 😀 that would make my day lol

Question:

My application is still waiting to be marked as complete, but when sending in the secondary I realized that they wanted two science academic letters; I only have one science letter (my lab PI is not actually on the faculty, so it doesn't count).

Do you think this will bar me from consideration or even a complete status?

i don't know if this has already been answered, so sorry if i'm repeating questions... but how long after submitting secondaries does it take to be marked complete, if LORs were already sent?

My secondary was submitted 9/8 and marked complete 9/30.

Congratulations!! When were you complete, and what is your residency status, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks!

How strict are they about the deadline for the LOR if it is there fault that they haven't downloaded them yet?

My deadline was the beginning of October and my secondary was received before that. But my application has not been marked complete yet due to them not having downloaded my LOR yet.

Will I get penalized for it as it will be 3 weeks past the deadline? With the secondary, it said that we must notify them if our letters will not be received 3 wks past the deadline.

Thanks

So... for people who interviewed around or before 9/22, are we supposed to get a letter in the mail tomorrow with decisions?? I can't wait to hear back from them!!!!🙂

Just got a call from the dean offering an acceptance. Sooooo he's working today 🙂 be ready for a phone call from a 708 area code! Good luck everyone!!

Hello,

Been following this thread for a few weeks now.

Congrats guys! Must feel great! 🙂

I've been under review forever. Would it be wise to send a letter of interest or something to kind of nudge them into looking into sending me an interview invite? BBender?

Call from the dean, accepted! Decision letters are sent out on Monday he told me.

I'm losing my mind because they told me that they'd let me know by this past Friday. The longer I wait the less likely it is that the news will be good. Haha normally I've learned to be a relaxed guy but right now I'm returning to pre-med freak out mode.

My status changed to

"We have received your application. We ask that you please allow at least one month for downloading letters and completion of your file. Thank you. "

From something else that was similar saying that my letters were still not attached to my file... Weird. anyone else get this?

Hahaha, I've been under review for like 3 months. I really like this school too but the wait is quite mysterious. Either reject me or invite me dammit!!

Can any students let us know if it is typical to wait this long between completion and potential interviews?
