I am on the second quartile. This is my second time applying... I don't know if I should be excited or disappointed. Last year I was on the AWPA list and told I was in the third quartile. I obviously never received admittance. I am sort of in a bind now since my lease for my apartment ends June 1st. What should I dooooooo. Hope for the best and don't renew my lease... or be realistic and sign again.

Keep your hopes up. I would assume that you may have a month or so before you have to commit one way or the other. I would holdout as long as you can. I also agree with mdphd72, see if you can extend for a month or two, by then you would be much more certain about your fate.

Withdrew an acceptance this week. It was a tough decision because I know SIU is legit but I got some personal baggage that doesn't feel like living three different places in three years and I have another acceptance at a place much like SIU that I think will work out fine😀

GL to all of you!:xf:

Congratulations to all the students that were accepted. The lists do move quite a bit, so fret not, many people got in quite late.

- Not a lot of people on SDN for SIU are there?

Last Thurs (3/31), Dr. Constance told me to expect an acceptance within a week or two, and I received the email yesterday. Damn, this feels good.

Congrats, I guess this means that the 1/4 has begun.

And I still haven't given up my seat yet guys! 😀

I'm holding out JIC I change my mind. I'm horrible at making life decisions!

I withdrew my spot today guys! Good luck to whoever gets it!

Anyone else on the top quarter get an acceptance yet???

Still almost a whole month until the 'magical' May 15th date. Hope we all hear something sooner rather than later!

:luck:

Hi everyone! I was accepted last week off of the AWPA list (from the top quarter), and I just wanted to let you all know that the list is definitely starting to move! I'm very excited as SIU is my top choice, best of luck to everyone on the AWPA list, it is definitely a stressful place to be 🙁 Hope to see you in Carbondale next year!
Also, does anybody know much about apartments in the Carbondale area?

Just received my acceptance today via email. For those that haven't received an acceptance keep the faith the list is moving. I look forward to seeing all of you in August.

Congratulations! Hopefully Dcr4Med and I get a similar email soon!

You will be getting info about that from our class in a couple weeks. 🙂

Thanks so much Caesar! I'm really looking forward to next year, can't wait! 🙂

Well, this morning it officially became written, I'll be matriculating in August!! Hope you're next sareeb or have already heard! 😀

To the others waiting, I was in the top 1/4 and told not to expect acceptance in April (most likely May), so it sounds like the list is maybe moving quicker or more than expected so far. However, this is only my speculation, so good luck to all waiting!

Awesome news! Congratulations 🙂 I'm so giddy right now. I feel like it'll be any day now!!!

I just received my acceptance email this morning! I was in the top 1/4 and was told I should expect an email around the decision date, so I suspect that the list is moving quicker than anticipated? Good luck to those who are still waiting. For those of you accepted, I can't wait to meet all of you come August 🙂 I adore you all already.

You'll meet many in June. There is a one-day orientation then. Should be some of my class there as well to say hey.

Awesome, congrats!! :hardy: Looking forward to meeting you all too, it's going to be a blast and lots of hard work I'm sure!

Congrats,

I told you not to worry.

Is there anyone else following these posts from the 1/4 that hasn't been accepted?

Otherwise I would assume that we are most of the way through the 1/4 and might make it a ways through the 2/4.

I'm pretty sure I was the last one in the first quarter who has been posting on this thread. Let us begin with the second quarter!

Withdrew earlier this week. Hopefully someone on the wait-list gets my spot!

You guys are giving me hope! 😍

..Or it could be not that more people are withdrawing, just that people are withdrawing earlier. 😛

Nah, we are at the "oh **** I took a month of ERG off and there is an exam coming up" stage now.

ERG was great until very recently.

this = my life right now.:slap:

If it makes you first years feel any better, I'm sitting here at work wishing I was in your shoes right now instead of being bored out of my mind. I could use some new medical knowledge instead of dealing with annoying corporate business people and processes in which I have no interest, haha!

BTW, how is the rec center down there? I mostly work out with free weight dumbbells and am hoping they have a good selection there. They have no pictures of the weight equipment and free weight areas that I've found.

They have a pretty large selection of dumbbells and free weights, so I've always been able to find what I needed. The dumbbells go up to at least 100lbs, are rubber encased, and there are multiple pairs of each. The dumbbells and free weights are in a room of their own while the isolation machines are in a separate room. Again, I've always been satisfied with the selection and you usually don't need to wait around for things if you go during non-peak times. There are 4 designated bench press benches (plus ~6 adjustable benches for dumbbells), 4 squat racks, incline bench press, decline bench press, like 4 pulley gym systems, etc. Let me know if you are looking for something more specific and I can let you know if they have it. Hope that helps.

Sounds like it should work just fine, thanks a lot for the info!

A question for the current first years. Do you recommend reading or studying anything in particular over the summer before starting Med. School?

I have a few things in mind to lightly read/study but I was wondering if there is anything that you can recommend.

honestly, I wouldn't read much of anything. It is far too difficult to gauge the appropriate depth before you start. But fwiw here are the books I used:

CRR:
Boron, Lilly Pathophys of heart disease, West respiratory

SSB:
Blumenfeld, Purves

ERG:
Mosby series endocrinology and gastrophys books, boron

Overall: First Aid for USMLE (good figures), an anatomy text (they are all pretty similar, find one that works for you). Bates (physical exam book). I wouldn't buy the updated first of Boron, get the second edition. I have 1u and there is some pretty important stuff missing from it. esp in endocrine because endocrinologists keep changing their minds.

Books in bold I would consider to be absolute musts. Boron is the preferred text by faculty and they use figures from it often. Lilly is just THE best book, written by MDs and Med students, West is a book the resp. guy here uses.

If you want to read something over the summer or learn something, have a look at some basic clinical testing, CBC, Chem, UA, and see what goes into them and have an idea of what they might mean, but if you go any deeper than wiki, you went too far.

I agree with Caesar except I wouldn't bother with Bates. It's in the library and I've used it all of twice all year.

Don't do anything over the summer. Read something non medical, it'll prob be the last time you have a chance to do that.

PS. Caesar, I almost posted your real name and outed you to the internets. oops

Waiting and waiting and waiting until May 15th. After that I am considering calling and asking how far the list has moved...

2nd quarter, here. :xf:

It's been pretty quiet around here, wonder if there has been any movement lately or if those that have been accepted have not heard of the wonders of the Internets.

Best of luck to you getting off one of your waitlists!

Got my acceptance today. I was somewhere on the second quartile.

Is there a particular group for the class of 2015? Or are you guys referring to the general SIU School of Medicine page?

It's a group that they send you in the welcome packet you get when you create your email, Linda should send the email. Email setup info should come in the mail shortly after they get your deposit.

Class of 2015 SIU SOM is the name.
