That doesn't gel with what I remember hearing from the presentation. I was under the impression that UofA Phoenix only has 48 outstanding offers at a time to fill the class size, but that they pull from the waitlist as needed. I was also told that last year they pulled upward 150 people from the waitlist just in order to fill those 48 seats. Can anyone else confirm those numbers?

That sounds way too high to me. I'm not even sure the wait list had 150 people on it to begin with. Tucson pulled 65ish spots (exact number on last year's thread) for a class 2.5 times as big. So no way.

If I remember correctly from one of the pre-med info sessions hosted by Michelle and Tara over summer, Phoenix accepted 120-150 students for the entering class of 2010, just 70-100 of those people chose to go somewhere else.

That seems a little bit more reasonable. Most schools typically over accept anywhere from 150-200% before they start pulling off the waitlist. That means that by the time May rolls around Phoenix last year probably offered about 90 spots and throughout the cycle as other acceptances were offered people withdrew. With those numbers, 20-30 acceptances off the waitlist seems pretty reasonable to me.

On Aug 24, Tara sent an email to the MS1s with details concerning their application cycle. There were 78 students accepted who did not matriculate which means 126 students were accepted including waitlist and initial acceptance offers.

I might take off work tomorrow. Slim possibility but if I got an acceptance invite I might have to explain why I am cheering in the office, which might lead to an earlier than anticipated exit from my job 😎

I wouldn't lose hope if you haven't heard back yet even if the class is filling up. There are still a significant amount of acceptances at a number of schools still happening in the spring and for perhaps geographical/financial/"best fit" reasons, some people who have been accepted to Phoenix will drop their acceptance if they get into their top choice (obviously not the case if Phoenix is the top choice), freeing up the spot for others to fill up. Also, as far away as it may be, after May 15th (as you all know), an accepted student must commit to one school and drop other acceptances so applicants should see WL movement there.

Anyway, I just want to urge people (especially out of staters) that may feel they have a snowball's chance in hell of getting in not to lose hope, even if you are vying for 12 spots and that I myself didn't get in until after May 15th off of the WL last year. Despite having another acceptance at the time, Phoenix was my top choice and I made sure to communicate that to the adcom with update/interest letters.

The application process is definitely precarious and emotionally trying. Good luck everyone. I'm rooting for you all.

I can understand your concern. I have three separate manuscripts submitted for publication, but none of them had been accepted yet when I sent in my update letter. With that being said, I would just be honest with your progress. After all, the main purpose of the update letter is to emphasize your continued interest in the school. I also checked with my PI and got her go-ahead to attach the abstracts of my manuscripts to my update letter. I hope this helps!

Also, anyone who gets to present at SFN automatically gets to mark their application with a "certified bad-ass" stamp...and I'm sure that won't go unnoticed during the application review process. 🙂

Oh, that is an excellent idea! I never thought about sending in my abstracts, but I should. That way, they have a better idea of my research background AND I get to pretend I am adding some new information.

And can I just say that SFN was both the most awesome and the scariest experience of my life? I met EIGHT people that I cited. I might have cried inside a little bit, while I laughed nervously on the outside. Did you get a chance to check it out this year?

I think Phoenix does the 5pm releases, and Tucson does it at some point during the day. Last time they released acceptances around 11:15. *Fingers crossed*

I spoke with the admissions office yesterday regarding some basic interview cycle questions and was informed that the next round of acceptances would be at the end of this month.

Fairly sure. I have seen this date on previous pages for this thread, and at my interview, they said mid-January for the second release date.

January 14th is the closest weekday to the middle of January....but who knows? No one answered when I called to confirm.

From a very reliable source, Tucson won't be sending out acceptances until the 21st. Applicants that each sub committee (4) thinks are qualified go up for acceptance today. The committee meets and then decides on who they will accept for this round. So far they have accepted around 30 seats, and they will be accepting around the same number of applicants this acceptance cycle.

That make sense. I saw one picture in the news with the Dean. They clearly have had a lot going on this week. Also, I when I called about sending an update with grades, they said they would accept any update up until January 14. That makes me think that they planned on releasing seats the following week. (Not sure how much updates really factor into selections?)

I have no idea how accurate this is, but according to eduers.com, in 2007 there were 590 in-state applicants, of which 590 were interviewed. 185 were offered admission (so about 31% acceptance).

According to the UA med school website, in 2010 590 in-staters applied to Tucson, but only 416 were offered an interview. There are no acceptance stats available. For 2010 in Phoenix, 360 were invited to interview and 32 were accepted.

maybe for phoenix because they've finished almost all of their acceptances, but i highly doubt that's the case for tucson.

Actually, Tucson is the one I was worried about. I called Tucson to confirm and they said yes, yesterday was the last day. I then called phx, but they didn't pick up.. 😕

Interviewed end of dec and fell IN LOVE with the school, so i would be sooo bummed if they are done!

I am also OOS (cali) so it makes me even more nervous as i really would love to go to UA-Phoenix

as far as i know, they have 2-3 more acceptance dates and then the wait list comes out. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Not quite. Not every "Latino/Hispanic" is a URM. Only Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are considered under the URM label.

That is because "Hispanic" specifically refers to those of Spanish (from Spain) origin. Just like Mexican refers to those from Mexico, Hispanic specifically refers to those from Spain. Oftentimes it is misused to connote anyone who merely speaks Spanish, but that is an incorrect usage of the word. Where many people use the term Hispanic improperly, Latino(a) can often be used in its place.

yeah but my point was that in this case, urm status was derived not from puerto rico or mexico, but instead from a country in western europe. also, there is no "national latino" scholarship award so take it up with collegeboard.
