🙁 I'm sorry to hear that. If you don't mind saying, which district are you in? Have you gotten accepted elsewhere? If not, good luck with any remaining applications you have out there, and I hope your conversation with Mr. South will let you know what might need improvement.

To everyone else out there, good luck as some of the letters are apparently out there. Remember (I have told literally hundreds of students this by now)- there's no such thing as a sure thing in medical school admissions. The second you fool yourself into thinking there is, it can come back and get you. I've seen way too many students get too confident about their IS (or what they felt was an easier OOS) option and then be devastated when it comes back the other way- please don't do that to yourselves. Congratulations to new acceptances, and condolences to those that aren't getting good news. I wish you all the best of luck in future applications and as always, I'm sure most of us on here would be happy to help if you have questions.

Yeah, I got in OOS elsewhere, but I'm waiting to hear from my top choice. I probably won't be reapplying here, but I still want some insight.

Good deal, an acceptance is an acceptance. As long as you're in somewhere that's reputable/you're happy with, you're still sitting pretty good statistically speaking, and I'd take it and run, no sense waiting and reapplying when you have an in elsewhere. Multiple acceptances would put you in a rare (fortunate) minority, but naturally I hope you get good news from your top choice. It's always good to find out why a med school that interviewed you chose not to accept (it could certainly help you in the future) so I hope that is informative for you. Good luck with your top choice, and if there's anything Mr. South tells you that you feel might help future applicants, please come back and share!

BTW, I'm a local guy so, in addition to others, feel free to ask about local LR issues. (housing, logistics, etc)

I'm an old, so don't ask me about social stuff. My idea of a wild time is a 5-6 hour run in the woods.

Oh em gee. Is there a fellow endurance athlete in my midst? My friend and I are marathoners/Ironmaners (only done 1 50k so far). I would love to have your idea of a great time, and I'm going to steal running locations from you!

I've been dipping my toe in the ultra marathon scene for about a year or so. Ran one 50K and did all but 4 miles of a 50 mile. Running a trail 50K in North Arkansas this weekend.

There are lots of trails around here, I just hope I can still find some time to get on them. There's a 100 Mile race here the weekend of fall break I've been training for.

Ooo, Sylamore?! I wanted to do it and put my effort forth on the record ($2,000 if you break it, and 3:41 is all it takes!), but I let my training slack off when I found out I couldn't run LR Marathon. Let me know how the river crossings go; the last snow left everything up in NWA maxing out on the banks.

Alternate list, turned it down so one of you can have the spot 🙄

You're more serious than I am if you're eyeing that kind of time. Though the weather should cooperate and give some fast finishes. Last year the creak was over butt deep, should be real fun this year.

Looks like I was put onto the wait list.
A few more weeks-months of waiting never hurt anyone right...right?

I'm still waiting but everyone I know has gotten letters 🙁

So ready to know!

accepted oos, but mailed withdrawal form this morning. i hope it goes to one of you guys...

Thanks for doing that so quickly for them. With any luck they'll start waitlist movement will start for you guys pretty soon.

It's been pretty quiet from most of the OOS guys so far- anyone else get news recently?

I am a Missouri resident that received notification of acceptance last week. My first acceptance!

I got your visitor message thing, but I couldn't find the schedule I posted on a cursory search. It's in one of the Arkansas pre-med threads if you really want to look for it. A general overview is 4-5 lectures a day for the first 8 weeks with some random "PBL" thrown in. After that, it's 3-5 lectures with a gross lab in the afternoon or morning and an occasional histo lab during the day. That keeps up until mid-April or so when you revert back to the lecture-only thing with a few neuro labs. Tests are every 2-3 weeks. While gross is going, you'll have a written portion in the morning and a practical in the afternoon.

Springfield, but my parents live in Jonesboro so I guess I have pretty strong ties.

Cool. I did my undergrad at Drury, when it was still just a college.

Milkman--

I'm waitlisted OOS. I remember reading on the thread a few year's back that you made an appointment to discuss your application with someone from the admissions office after being waitlisted. I just called and asked about whether I could provide any update letters/additional info and whether they would provide any info about where one stands on the waitlist, and the answers to both were no. Did you do anything differently? Do you think they have changed the policy regarding post-decision updates?

Thanks!

They definitely won't tell you where you are on the list, but I just went ahead and sent them updated transcripts. If you have a new research project or something else of note that you want to share, go for it. I don't believe for one second that the waitlist is absolutely static.

Do you think they have changed the policy regarding post-decision updates?
Doubtful. It's tough to get info from them. I would highly suggest speaking with Mr. South if you can, though. He was very informative. 😉

I'll second that. When I was waitlisted 2 years ago, I went and met with him. I knew they couldn't give any info, but he had very good advice both for waiting, and if I had to re-apply. The one thing that struck me was that he took a lot of notes, and the next time I saw him he remembered the entire conversation. I think meeting with him may have helped on the re-application.

People applying to UAMS have NO IDEA how well taken care of we are having Dr South and Mrs. Dupuy as resources.

Seriously, the UAMS admission department is astonishingly good. As you know if you read old UAMS threads, Ms. DuPuy responded to an email of mine within 5 minutes once and another one within an hour on a Saturday. Mr. South was about as candid as he could be when I spoke with him on the phone after being waitlisted. I have no doubt they helped me get admitted to the school which is why I advise everyone to keep in touch with them.

Okay, so quick question: When are we notified on scholarships. For some reason, I thought I had heard that this happened in March, but UAMS' website says May. Was my memory just faulty and had it's own self-accord to associate all months starting with M to be the same?

I've already received my scholarship offer. So I think they are reviewing people now.

Grats Astrife! When did you hear about it?

I just now got by background check completed; damn Application Station claimed I was operating under an additional SSN (my dad's) since we've got the same first and last name.

Edit: Just talked to a buddy that got offered one today, was it by mail or phone?

The dirty little secret of medicine is that if you want to work in rural areas, you can get your education paid for no matter what specialty you want to do. Similarly, if you want to do primary care, you can get your education paid for regardless of where you practice. In other words, don't lock yourself into a contract now if you don't have to.

Yeah, the $1million is an endowment. BCBS is going to keep the money, but put it in a high interest account and let UAMS use the profits for scholarships. Right now, the money probably isnt going to go into the typical-alternate pool rural program... but instead be offered to MS3s and 4s.

Not to jack the thread, but the dirty secret of healthcare policy is that the most common solution thrown out to the "not enough PCP" issue - the Scholarship/loan forgiveness ploy - is one of the least effective ones. Everyone here knows that a few years of practice makes up for the investment of the med school education. The disparity in pay, and the working conditions of family practice are what drives people out out of PC and into specialties, and there seems to be little stomach for changing that.

An endowment is a transfer of money to an institution. BCBS is NOT keeping the money. The money IS being transferred to UAMS.

Your right, I misspoke. The money is being given to UAMS, but its going to be put into some kind of high interests account and the scholarships will be given from the interest.

Waitlist movement about to start.
Has UAMS communicated something to that effect? Waitlist movement usually doesn't start until mid-May after all the rural practice stuff has gone down, but if rumors that they're not doing the rural practice program this year are true, that could change things dramatically.

Milkman, I only said that because Ms Dupuy said movement would start after the rural practice program is all sorted out. Well, they interviewed for Rural on Monday and letters were sent on Wednesday.

I am not sure how accurate the rumors are; perhaps there is something to it because we were told that they had limited funds this year. Since preference is given to medical students, I would think little or no funds would be available to the alternates, this year.

I'm glad they sorted the interviews out earlier this year. It didn't make a whole lot of sense for them to wait until late April to hash everything out.

Yeah the turn around time was something else; there was not even enough time to mull over it.

Interviews and acceptances were sent out for rural program already. There were only 3 alternates accepted into the rural program this year. So... waitlist movement should start fairly soon.

We were told that there were only three scholarships available. So all three went to alternates??

Community Match is for residents; so with 4, that took a lot of the money from the scholarship program.

Almostcountry24, u seem to know a lot. Do know how many that have turned down acceptance for this year? Lol
