Ah, there it is.

Geekchick921,

Thank you for your interest in Penn Med. You were among many candidates applying for acceptance to our class entering in the Fall 2011.
Although we are unable to offer you a position in the class, we hope you will succeed in your career goals to become a physician.

-- The Committee on Admissions

And to that, I say, WHATEVA! *hairflip*

I read the actual letter posted on their website and it said this:

"Your application, although reviewed on multiple occasions, was not selected for admission."

In other words, you were a loser each time we looked at your stuff

I loled 2, at least we still got a shot at LA

I feel like this rejection was so dragged out...I didn't even care when it became (facebook) official.

+1 to the rejected letter. saw it coming from a mile away, so that's okay!

:

just out of curiosity, did you all interview or were these pre-interview rejections?

Here's a question for anyone who sent letters of interest, updates, and/or thank you notes by email: did anyone receive some form of confirmation that they received these things? I sent mine awhile ago, haven't heard anything, and am wondering whether I should check in to make sure they got it all.

I sent in an update letter and notification of its receipt was posted to my online portal about a week later. You could also try calling the office and asking them; they seem really nice!

I typically send update letters addressed to the dean of admissions. The MSAR says that at Penn, this is Dr. Steven Galetta, but this isn't listed anywhere on the admissions site or in any of the materials given on interview day. Can anyone confirm that this is correct and up-to-date?

hey guys, i have sent updates earlier and received confirmation. you should give them a call or e-mail again just in case though.

On the other hand, I just sent an update last week and did not receive any confirmation as I usually did. Has this happened to anyone else? It may be due to the massive snow storm that hit them last week?

Thanks!

I believe that Gaye Sheffler is the Director of Admissions based on the following link: http://www.med.upenn.edu/student/directories/faq.html

I don't know if there is a Dean of Admissions...but I wouldn't recommend sending an update letter to the dean of the med school, if that's what you meant. I think as long as you send it to Admissions they'll make sure it gets into your file to be reviewed by the committee.

Ms. Sheffler is who I understood ran Penn Med's admissions. My update was addressed to her.

Also, Penn Med is awesome. I want it to be March already!

Ms. Sheffler is who I recommend sending the letter to - she takes care of a lot of the admissions stuff, and I'm pretty sure sending it to her will make sure it gets added to your file/reviewed.

I know Penn's started the final review already - so if you are going to send the letter in - definitely do it sooner rather than later since you have no idea when your app will be reviewed.

Good luck! :luck:

Edit: And before it's asked - no I didn't send in a letter, but that doesn't mean it's not helpful.

I didn't apply this cycle but have a general question about Penn's interview process. Do the faculty and student interviewers both have full access to your application? Did they seem like they had read the application closely before the interview?

Yes, they both have access to it. My faculty interviewer had clearly read my application closely, and had a lot of detailed questions relating to material from it. In my case, the student who was originally supposed to interview me apparently had something come up and canceled at the last minute. The new student who interviewed me apologized that he hadn't had time to carefully review everything before meeting, but it was clear that he had at least quickly read through it all. He also appeared to have a hard copy of everything with him, which he flipped through a couple of times to find specific information.

For those who sent update letters/ LOI's, did u guys do so by email?

Thanks Sentinel. Hopefully I'm not too late. The update receipt was noted in the portal two days after sending the email.

And so continues the waiting game...

oh snap, so you sent it straight to Mrs. Sheffler then?

I don't believe anyone post-interview gets feedback until march. Could always be wrong, of course. The waiting is killing me.

Not me!

Because I applied to Penn as an MD safety! Why? Because I'm an idiot who doesn't know what he's doing, obviously!

Gosh, when I put it down in writing it looks even more ridiculous.

If I got in, though, I'd actually think hard about going to Penn as an MD and applying to the MSTP internally.

Yup, both students and faculty interviewers have full access.

In my case, the student interviewer was really meticulous and great about going through my file so it went a lot more smoothly. I think my faculty interviewer skimmed over it once as well, but he was definitely reading over it (again?) as he was talking with me.

Faculty interviewers have full access. Student interviewers get everything except your grades (i.e. no MCATs or class grades / GPAs)

Good luck on the wait - just another month guys!

I'm the first to admit I don't know what I'm doing in this process. 🙄
Sadly, I'm fully aware of how I am basically just stumbling around in the dark until I find the lightswitch.

That's fine, no one is an expert at admissions. Most people, however, would agree that Penn Med is nobody's safety school. It's just that great of a school.

Oh I definitely agree. Hence the comment about me not knowing what I was doing. You know what my thought process was?

"Man, I don't know if I can make it into an MSTP. I better apply to a few MD only programs. Maybe they're easier to get into. Hmm...Penn and Hopkins are tough schools. I don't think I've got a shot at their MSTP. I'll apply to their MD programs as backups, then!"

See how stupid I am? 🙄 I kind of wish I could hit the "redo" button and jump back half a year now...

I love Penn's applicant site. I wish it was this easy to send an update to all my schools.

~1 month until we hear back!

hi everyone!

I was just wondering, does anyone have an opinion on sending a continued interest letter? I don't really have anything to update on but I almost feel that since I haven't had any correspondence with Penn since October, I should let them know that I still want to go here soooooooo badly. but then again, I have a feeling most everyone they interviewed is still pretty interested lol.

My take is that all these updates are meaningless UNLESS you have done something dramatically different from the time you interviewed on. I am not sending crap. Let's see how it goes.

Everyone will be writing about keeping up with their same ECs, and grades. And continued interest letters ? I think Penn has an applicant pool qualified well enough to make ANY continued interest letter a waste of time.

I updated them on one major change and since I was already writing an update, included minor update stuff with it.
