this thread has been kinda quiet today. This is my second SDN post but I have been searching and reading the SDN threads for a while and thought I would like to become a member (as of today). I had an interview at UT mid-November and still waiting for a response, a letter, something. Anyone here who interviewed in November got a response back yet?

I interviewed on Nov 15th and I got a letter saying that they hadn't made a final decision yet.. It's been killing me every single day.. Oh well better to teach me perseverance!

just got my acceptance package in mail...Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There I come UT class of 2015! Tears of joy and happiness

Vandyam,
Not sure about the whole race thing, but according to this year's MSAR:

Average MCAT was 30 (range 26-35)
Average overall GPA was 3.7 (range 3.3-4)
Average science GPA was 3.7 (range 3.2-4)

Your science GPA is a little scary, but you can always improve! It sounds like you've done some pretty great stuff that will look great in the extra-curricular arena.

Other than that, the numbers pretty much speak for themselves.

Well, what can I say about those stats...Your MCAT is where it is supposed to be. My wife got in with a 24! However these days I hear they will not take anything less than a 25. That being said, your GPA hurts. However, they tend to take high MCATS and low GPA's because research has shown that only MCAT really matters when taking the boards. This is mostly because the MCAT is a standardized test and so are the boards. So if you do well at standardized tests you will do well at the MCAT and the boards...also you are a girl, they like to take competative girls at UT. Did I mention my wife had a 24 on her MCAT and she also gets 18,000 in scholarships every year though her GPA was around 3.6 for both science and non-science. She is not a relative of anyone at UT or a minority other than being a girl...so who knows why they choose people sometimes? She did not have a stellar history of experience, does not speak a foriegn language or anything. They just liked her in interview. So keep trying, you never know what they will do. On the other side of that coin, I have the same grades, better MCAT's, speak spanish and have a diverse history of experience...dont know why she got in before me.

So after trying to avoid the stress I start to feel everytime I think about medical school applications, etc - the time has come to start to buckle down and figure out if I am going to be in the running at the medical schools I want to attend.

Can anyone tell me if I am a competitive applicant at UT for med school? It's my first choice school, and I've been avoiding asking the question for fear of the worst.

I'm an in-state resident.
Vanderbilt U for undergrad
Female, 21
3.4c/2.98s GPA (science gpa is a killer - tho I'll be taking another science course during the summer and I'll submit that once I get the grade back)
MCAT: 30Q
CNA for 2 years at Vanderbilt in the trauma department
Other CNA experience in another hospital for a year
Work 40-50 hrs per wk since freshman year...part of the reason why GPA is so low.
Cherokee Indian/White - though I was told that some medical schools might require you to have your CDIB card to claim NA (craziness), and I'm not sure how long it will take me to get my card, so I might not be able to claim this.

Does anyone on here know if I stand a chance at UT? This has always been where I wanted to go to med school, but the stats of those accepted are always all over the place and I do not know where I stand. Hoping you guys can give me some more insight.

I see posts like this and it makes me feel good, hopeful, something. At the same time perplexed. I'm cool, different, and just a spiffy gal. Or so I thought until I entered this process. It really makes you wonder about yourself: the good and the bad. My thought is that if I can just get to the interview they'll see that a lot more.

Just goes to show there's more at play than numbers. You won't know unless you try. With that said, you don't want to enter the game with an injury, either.

i feel you guys. this process has completely baffled me....there seems to be no rhyme or reason to how they choose people sometimes. although i think it's early enough in the process for most people that you can't lose hope yet.

So she received Merit scholarships from UT? I thought all that money went to the 40 MCAT 4.0 kind of people. I just interviewed at UT, so I will hopefully know something soon. We will no longer get emails from Diane because someone ratted her out. Snitches. Good luck to everyone. There is plenty more time to interview and get it, so do not get discouraged.

Hold up...what happened? Ratted her out on what? She was so nice!

I wonder if this is why I never heard back...

It's not that big of a deal. So after you have your interview, the committee meets (usually that Friday) to discuss you. If your interviewer is there, they will discuss you and make a motion to admit, deny, or hold. That decision is mailed out to you the following Friday. Diane would try and send an email out to let you know that it was on the way. This was just her being thoughtful, not a university action. She will not be doing that anymore. She is incredibly sweet.

If for some reason, your interviewer is not at the meeting, you will not be discussed until the next one, which is probably the case for many that have not heard back. No email just means an extra couple of days of waiting. I just want to know before Christmas, so I can decide if Jesus loves me or not.

Ahhh, I was thinking she got pink slipped or something.

I do still wonder why no one ever got back to me when I tried contacting them a couple times. Oh well, no biggie.

Btw, when do they start sending out pre-interview rejections?

You don't have to wait, man. Don't you know the bible tells you so?

Well, in some of my earlier posts I think I mentioned that UT has a "rounding out the class" process. They could just accept all the 4.0 and 40+ MCAT people and call it a day. However, it is likely that A: there are not enough of them applying to UT specifically to count on having a class full of them and B: those people tend to scew towards not being very social (with some exceptions of course but not enough to compensate) and C: they are looking for more than just numbers...experience, being personable, showing leadership outside academics, etc. Then of course they have to accept so many OOS and so many females and so many minorities, etc. There is a lot to consider when accepting an applicant.

My wife got in as part of the TIP program. It is a summer program which has real medschool classes at a med school pace. If you pass with a C or better you get into medical school at UT. This was done as a conditional acceptance on her third time applying to medical school. The class is typically for minorities. My wife is not a minority. Her interviewer just really liked her. It is my understanding that all of the TIP students recieved scholarship once they matriculated. She also has another scholarship on top. I dont know all the details. Also, as a side note, they can give scholarships to whomever they like. There are scholarships out there for people who are left handed...which of course has little or nothing to do with having a 4.0 GPA or a 40+ MCAT. Also on another note my wife is a straight A student in Medical school. So there could be a lot of reasons why she has scholarship...however she had all her scholarships before she ever made a grade in medical school. She has not recieved any new scholarships but the ones she started with have continued. Thats all I know🙂

I need a Christmas miracle too... Although to be historically correct, wasn't Jesus actually born in April, or something like that? I heard that once. That would be uncannily close to some med school decision deadlines! So maybe, if Jesus is going to show us he loves us by getting us into med school before his birthday... We might still have to wait a few more months 😉 Anyway, who knows what's gonna happen, I'm sure it will all turn out well in the end, have faith!

EDIT: This is kind of stupid... but I don't know why the subject line of this post has an angryface. I didn't put it there, on purpose at least... I'm not angry, I'm more in a laughing-at-myself kind of mood. That's all!

Link? I'm a lefty!

Wait...is this what's keeping me from interviewing? Should I have told them this? Or did they already know and are secretly holding out for an all-righty class? :scared:

hahaha

And yes, you did mention before the rounding out they do.

I assume no one knows when they'll start rejecting?

I don't think anyone (especially me) knows anything about rejecting, but I would ASSUME that MAYBE they would not reject many at this point. I would IMAGINE that most of the people left will get interviews. There is plenty of time to interview. 3-4 solid months of them are left. Good luck!

I have an acceptance deposit due soon but would really like to know where I stand at UTHSC... Do you think a LOI would help or hurt? Anyone have any experience with doing this at UT?

I personally don't think it would make a difference. They have such large numbers going through the process right now that I would assume that where you stand based on MCAT and GPA is where you stand (preinterview).

Thanks p head, I appreciate your response.

That is a little strange, all med schools in the country are supposed to respect the traffic rules. That is the date for you making your final decision on a med school is....can't remember..in april or may. However there is nothing that says they cant charge you so it may fall under a different category. Anyway...a letter of intent from another school can backfire on you. If you tell UT you already have an acceptance they may let you go. Then again I do not know. You may not be the only one that has said "....I got an acceptance elsewhere but would rather go to UT...can you tell me where I stand?" It may not change where you stand like p head says but it might encourage them to look at your case sooner though I am not sure how that might change the outcome. Sorry I dont have any real advice.

That's assuming it's an allo school though. For example, KCOM (osteo) required payment by Dec 15th (now passed), I believe. (The dates change now on as the season progresses) And to add to the frustration, it isn't refundable. I may be wrong, but most allo schools' deposits are refundable up to a certain date - or at least the schools I had looked at. So if it's refundable, why not put the $ down? And avoid the possible problem that VitalArmor brought up. Or what's $1000 loss after all is said and done?

Owls you could just decide to go to that other school so losers like me who have been trying to get in for years might have a chance😛 Okay okay, tropicalkitty is right, there should be some kind of refund date. Good luck:luck:

I was thinking it too. :meanie: But I didn't want to be the first to say it. hahaha Like we want more competition...

Does anyone have any experience with the committee sending them recommendations in bold type of what to if they choose to reapply? And then actually getting an acceptance after doing it?

Did you receive a communication like that recently?

If you browse through last year's version of this thread, I think you'll find it informative regarding your question 🙂

They told me to take more science. I did. I got A's. I now have over 200 credit hours in science and still have not gotten in. My wife was told to retake the MCAT. She did. Got the same score. A score lower than mine. She got in with $18,000 in scholarship per year. Who knows? Not sure what to believe about the bold print. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

I think this whole thing is getting to me now. I had a dream I got in. Waking up was not pleasureful. hrmph.

Hope those of you who are students have a nice break! And for my fellow work force members, enjoy your couple days off!

Maybe Santa will bring us still waiting something nice for the new year...

Gosh, I had the most devastating dream about that the other night! (EDIT: being rejected, on the day before classes, not accepted). I realized that, while I know that rejection could very well come, I'm still not prepared for how it's gonna feel. Especially if I wait that long for that news. This is definitely getting into my head as well... Definitely feeling all kinds of helpless/desperate/hopeless and whatnot, and trying to force myself into positivity and/or distraction.

Speaking of distraction: I like how last night, after seeing Black Swan and being totally freaked out/confused, I had dreams about The Avatar/Tron/Noah's Ark instead. Weird.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! Hope you spend it in good times with someone special, and are gifted with a hearty dose of hope, happy distraction, determination... And maybe soon, if you're still waiting for one, an acceptance letter!

Have you gotten an interview yet this year? I'm still waiting 😎

Just received an acceptance from UT today!!! What a wonderful early Christmas present!!! 😀

Just received my acceptance as well. To say I am excited is an understatement, simply the Best. Christmas. Present. EVER.

Congrats on the acceptances - did you get them email or snail mail? (I'm trying not to panic on not getting a letter today...).

Snail mail here. They send them all out snail-mail.

Snail mail here. They send them all out snail-mail.

Phew. I thought I remembered Ms. Harris saying they would only go out snail mail, but I also thought they'd be mailed the 23rd... back to watchful waiting on the mailbox 🙄

Congrats again guys! Enjoy the holidays.

Yeah be checking the mail because I got mine on Tuesday. It was a great Christmas present.

Accepted! Letter came in the mail early this morning - UT gives the best Christmas presents.

So....now that (almost)everyone in the room has been accepted...I guess it's going to be really quiet.

True. That or we can all now start scheming of housing and all those other fuzzy things that come with going to UT. Don't forget to stockpile for the massive New Madrid fault-line quake that will hit Memphis in 2012! (j/k....I really hope)

When did you guys (those of you who were accepted this week) interview?

Well, not me! But I got the acceptance I needed (Quillen). I suppose I should withdraw my app from everywhere else at some point... Best of luck to you!

VitalArmor, we have eachother. haha And Suncrusher now and then. Let's hope January goes well for us.:xf:

Congrats to those of you accepted!

I'm still here.. Although I've given up my obsessive mail checking haha. Just trying to occupy my mind with other things.

Rocher I'm in the same position as you (active hold) and up until this point have been living vicariously through you on this thread. After the recent bout of acceptances I decided to join and commiserate though. Do you know if we get a new letter every time our app is reviewed or just when something changes?

From what I've read in last year's thread, we only get a letter when something changes. I'm not sure how often they review us, but hopefully we'll be getting some love soon! Good luck!

From my experience last year, we only were notified when the waitlist officially began in May or so. I did interview in Feb. last year though, so it may be different since you interviewed earlier. Good luck to everyone. I can actually say that and completely mean it now.

I'm still here waiting as well. I just returned from interviewing for Ross University....yes, I'll go international if I must! Congrats to all those accepted! I'm still hoping for the UT interview soon. It's such a long wait.
