I think they try to mail out decisions on Friday, but this week I believe they are mailing out today, Monday. Hopefully we'll hear tomorrow or wednesday. Post when you hear!

Does UVA accept update letters? I've been complete since August and no word here...

Complete since 9/01 and no word. I know that's not so bad compared to being complete in July (!) but still....I love UVa.

Is no news good news at UVA or bad news? I thought no news was good news for them.

I would say that no news is no news. UVa did not reject people pre-interview last year, so the pre-interview applicants and "basically rejected" applicants were both waiting for news. If you were complete earlier than some of the people receiving interviews, then it's possible that they looked at your file and put it aside for later review. Since UVa is a rolling school, it is probably best if you interview early on because they fill the class up as the interview season progresses.

Well, I'm definitely not going to be interviewing early on. I wonder what my chances are now, this late without any type of response from UVa?

I should point out that only a handful of people in our class had interviewed by this point last year, from what I've been able to tell. It seems like most everyone I talked to interviewed in December-January time frame (there are a lot of stories about Snowpocalypse interviews). So don't worry now.

Well, to interview in the December-January time frame, I'd need an invitation by this point already, right? That's my concern. 😳

Pretty sure UVA doesn't schedule interviews 2 months in advance. Maybe a month, but certainly not 2+.

Thanks a lot! This makes me the closest to a normal level of anxiety as is possible for this season, haha. 🙄

Congrats to the accepted/interviewed!

Anyone know how UVA is about giving merit scholarships? I know there is the need-based stuff, but I was just wondering how many merit ones they give. Thanks!

Accepted!!!!!!!!!! I am soooooo happy. UVA is awesome, I loved it. My letter was lost in the mail for a week and a half....so I am so relieved it finally came!

I don't think that's true. I seem to recall a round of pre-interview rejections around November/December last year. Can anyone confirm either my recollection or justinbaily's?

Waitlisted... I'm surprised and very disappointed, I loved just about everything about UVA, and felt like I really fit in.

Apparently last year the class was overbooked and they had to offer incentives to people to defer for a year. Naturally, no one was taken off of the waitlist last year.

I'm hoping this year they're being more conservative with their acceptances in order to prevent the situation they had last year. If so, with fewer acceptances handed out there would be a much better chance of the waitlist eventually receiving attention. Anyone have any info on what the admissions strategy is looking like this year? Is this just wishful thinking?

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Also waitlisted. 🙁

Do we get any confirmation that they received our form reserving a seat in the class? I sent it a while ago and just really wanted to make sure they got it.

I got an email confirming that I had chosen to hold a place in the class 3 business days after they received my form. Admittedly, I live in VA and took the form into the office in person, so that may have hastened the process? I don't think it would hurt to send them an email or call. The people in the office are super nice (as you already know) and would probably be excited to hear from someone just following up on the great news!

if u get accepted, you will get a letter from mail? can we check on-line? the status will be changed?

does anybody know if the medical students can take an undergraduate course?

They can, it's just a matter of if you'll have the time. I talked to one of the deans about sitting in on some anthro classes, and he said people usually do it during 4th year. I'm not really sure how the undergrad classes are scheduled here, but we have class from 8-12 and then CPD one afternoon a week - it seems like M/W/F or T/TH classes, you'd miss at least one a week.

New step one average: 236.

You can take classes, but I wouldn't factor that heavily into your decision-making process for any school. Everywhere I interviewed mentioned that medical students could take X number of classes each semester, but it's probably best to use your extra time to join the inner-tube water polo team or do things with friends. There are also a lot of clubs and organizations in medical school, so instead of taking an art history class, for instance, you could be in charge of the humanities magazine or something similar.

So, quick question to medical students. Do you think that UVA might be able to help with job placement in the hospital for medical student's spouses? Very random, specific question.

That's a good question, but I'm not sure. There are at least three students who are married, but I think that their spouses all have jobs outside of the healthcare industry. I would contact admissions and see what they can do. They're pretty nice, so there's no harm is checking.

Thanks justinbaily, You're a stand up guy!

Congrats on the acceptances everyone - perhaps I'll see you guys/gals at second look.

anybody know what their scholarships are like? as in how many people get them or how much they are?

Not a clue how many get them, but they did give me a sizable grant, and I know quite a few people got merit scholarships (I was not among those people). I've heard compared to other VA schools, they're not as generous, but I'm not a VA resident and didn't really care about the other VA schools, so that's my take.

Sorry for this basic question that I just can't keep track of since everybody does it a bit differently, when do we hear about financial aid? Is it after we fill out the FAFSA (when is that due, March?)? Do some schools hand them out earlier than others?

UVA has you fill out two applications, the FAFSA and their own financial aid thing. Priority deadline is April 1. I didn't get any of my stuff filled out until June (due to family things, and the financial aid officer said that was fine since I wasn't using financial aid to compare schools), so I don't know when they release financial aid packages, but I think it was severely delayed last year, going right up to the deadline to hold multiple acceptances.

The timeline for handing out financial aid information is dependent on the school deciding the budget for the following year (they can't hand out financial aid until they know what the tuition costs are going to be). This will vary among schools.

I think they sent out our financial aid packages at the beginning of May. Merit scholarships are sent out earlier in mid-April, but that might vary based on the actual award.

So I've been meeting the mailman at the mailbox every monring this week waiting for my letter from UVA (I interviewed 11/9), and still nothing today. I called Louise to make sure it got sent, and she said my letter probably didnt leave UVA until this Tuesday 11/16. Everyone I met at the school said their letters went out the Friday immediately following their interview, so now I feel like I'm just waiting on a rejection :/

I just received a letter from UVA with the Alumni newsletter...as time goes on I'm getting more attached to the school! I can't wait till second look day.

me too! but i'm also alum so i'm already pretty attached.

for current students: i want to get a new computer, will the school send any required specs? also, since uva is paperless, would an ereader like an ipad be beneficial?

There is a bare minimum requirement... basically anything you get on the market today will easily meet the needs for med school, but you can read this page for specific requirements for UVA: http://www.medicine.virginia.edu/education/medical-students/ome/edtech/buying-page/

I personally use my laptop for everything. We have to bring them to class with us, so I don't see much use in getting a separate e-reader like the iPad. I don't know of anyone in our class who uses something like that... I have a kindle, but I use it for reading novels and playing games, not for school work. If you get a small laptop, something like that might be helpful, but I have a widescreen laptop and use it for everything. Of course, several people in our class also have the notes printed each week because they don't want to deal with the electronic versions.

I know the first years right now are ironing out some of the glitches in the new curriculum. Have there been any concrete changes? How about the fight to get paper versions of notes? Or does it look like we'll still have to print them independently next year?
