is anyone still looking for roommates? i'm interested in eagles landing (really cheap, far from the undergrads). i'm not on facebook so i don't really know how to go about finding people to live with

Is the earliest date alternates can be accepted after May 15th, or is there ever any movement before then?

I've heard through the grapevine that they'll look after May 15th only. Sorry 🙁

If UVA is a top choice for you, though, I'd make sure you have all your financial aid paperwork together in the event that you do get accepted off the waitlist.

March 19th. I don't know the time, but I imagine it should be roughly parallel to the interview day schedule.

I know because I'm a fourth year who has been an admissions tour guide and was asked to be on one of the student panels after lunch.

Second look really helped me solidify my decision to come to UVa. It was essentially a repeat of my experience during interview day, minus the stress and time constraints, and with a lot more interaction with students and students-to-be.

Looking forward to seeing some of you again!

Current Students:

Im looking at apts in Jefferson Ridge, Eagles Landing and the Woodlands of C'ville.

I heard 1st years dont get on campus parking. How then would it be best to get to school? Are any of these apartments close to a UVA shuttle route that runs to the med school?

I know for a fact Eagles Landing has a shuttle that takes students/nurses, whomever, from the apartment complex and drops them off right by the new med school building. They may have the same thing for the other two, I just routinely see the Eagles Landing bus roll by.

Eagles Landing looks very nice. I looked up the route through public transportation in Google Maps, and it's not very convenient, so I guess the shuttle is the only option. Does anyone know how often the shuttle goes? Where else on campus does it go?

EDIT: NVM I just found it on the property website: shuttles go every 30 minutes. That is pretty convenient.

I think it's first year undergrads, although, I don't know anyone who actually gets "on campus" parking. Most commuters park at a nearby garage

Driving down to cville this friday with my brother and friend to look at apartments/hang. PM me if you're in the area and wanna hang out/show us around. 🙂

Be there Sat/Sun/Mon all day

Can anyone shed any light on getting to school from JPA? Google maps shows no public transportation options, even though there is a bus stop in front of the community, why is that? After looking through the maps of the transit system, it seems like the free trolley operates along with this route as well. Is the free trolley reliable for daily commute? Are there buses from there to the school that are not showing up in Google?

Thanks!

I can't remember if this has been asked yet, but does UVa have some sort of student run free clinic??

I've seen this at other schools, but I was just curious if there was one here.

As far as I know, there isn't any dedicated student clinic. The UVa hospital itself takes in many low-income patients, so there's not really a need.

However, students can put on healthcare fairs or events in the community, as long as they secure the backing of a medical department. Students can also volunteer at RAM during the summer.

There's the Charlottesville Free Clinic on Rose Hill Drive, towards the downtown mall. It isn't student-run, but they do rely on volunteers to run their clinic nights. I'm not sure what med student volunteers are allowed to do (maybe take vitals and stuff like that?) because I only volunteered there as an undergrad, but I HIGHLY recommened volunteering here...the ladies who run the place rock.

I ride the trolley every day to school, but I live on the opposite side of the route you live on. It runs one way... down JPA, around, and back towards downtown via University. So for someone living on JPA, it's not a good way to get to school.

is there a place where we can see the 2011-12 academic calendar for when term starts, white coat ceremony, etc.?

i've been perusing the uva website and have come up empty-handed...

It is currently listed as a draft, but here you go: http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/handbook/academics/calendar/cal-11.cfm

I believe orientation starts for you guys on August 8th, and White Coat is that Friday. (I don't have a clue what they would have you doing on Thursday and Friday of the week before that).

It looks like for the Spring semester, they haven't quite worked out the dates; I suspect that they'll post a final schedule once they figure out if the time allotted for each of the courses is working for our class.

Speaking of the white coat ceremony, how many guests does each student normally bring? Is it worth an eight-hour trip for grandparents or is it rather short and sweet?

When do we get information about matriculation? As in the requirements.

I had 2 people there; some students had less, some had more. Whether its worth it depends on how invested your grandparents are, but basically, there's a couple of speeches, they read out the names of all 150ish students, then you read some sort of oath (one of three you'll recite in your 4 years), the faculty read an oath, and then there's a reception. The whole thing probably takes an hour and a half, and it's Friday afternoon (so they'd have to stay the night if they came down).

When do we get information about matriculation? As in the requirements.

I think they give you some information at second look, but the main packet comes in like May or June. The main things you have to worry about are immunization requirements, which can be found on the student health website (here). You also need BLS certification; I know people who waited until they got to town to take that. I got mine free through my workplace, so I couldn't tell you much more about how to get that taken care of.

I had my grandparents come because I was afraid they wouldn't be around in 4 years for graduation. Turns out I was right...

If you're coming to second look, or already live in Charlottesville, consider doing the 5K on the morning of the 19th. It starts at 9 at Nameless Field, and the first 200 people to sign up get a free aluminum water bottle. Proceeds go to the School of Medicine's pet project, Camp Holiday Trails.

You don't even have to run it, and can head out early to attend the events of Second Look (which start at 10). If you're interested, PM me and I'll give you the e-mail address of the person to contact.

this is kind of a weird question but does anyone know what month the tuition for second year is due? would it be closer to the start of second year, like july, or earlier?

Second year? August, since that's when we get back from summer break. Tuition isn't due until after classes start in the fall. We get our financial aid checks I think in the third week of August.

thanks mvenus. will you be gracing us with your presence at any of the second look activities?

Yup. I'll be at the 5K in the morning, but I'll be there at the reception after all your fun activities, and I'm sure I'll be at the party that night. And then I'm going to veg out on Sunday because that'll be the third party this week.

Will not attending Second Looks be a hindrance in terms of getting to know your classmates in the fall? I really wish I could go but can't justify it financially.

No. For several reasons.

1) Not everyone who goes to second look will come in the fall. There was one girl in my interview group who came to second look and is not in our class. I suppose she could have deferred, but I imagine she just chose to go elsewhere.

2) You won't remember the vast majority of the people you meet at second look. I vaguely remember talking to one, maybe two, people in our class at second look, and they're not in my close circle of friends. I've gone back and looked at the pictures that Heather McCoy took last year, and realized how much of our class really came to second look. But there's also a huge portion of the class that didn't.

So yeah, no worries. 🙂

hi all, i'm trying to make a decision about med school and i'm super excited about UVA but have a couple of questions for anybody who's currently there/might know since people on this thread have been so helpful! 🙂

1. someone from the charlottesville area told me that UVA has a reputation for being really fratty, which isn't really something i'm looking for. i wasn't sure if this was just true of the undergrad, or is there a noticeable spillover into the med school?

2. i'm really interested in international health and pursuing an MPH....international clinical experiences weren't really something that I noticed being emphasized, and I was just curious if it was something that students had the chance to do/actually did participate in. Is UVA usually pretty good about funding these sorts of trips? Also, is the application process for the combined MD/MPH extremely competitive, or is it one of those you apply, you're in kind of deals

3. Lastly, not that i've chosen a speciality, but emergency medicine is something i'm really interested in, and was wondering if there's good exposure to that given that Charlottesville is kind of rural

sorry there's so many questions!! Thanks a bunch for any help/advice!

Just true of the undergrad.

Several of our classmates are going abroad this summer and were funded very well. Funding is awarded based on the quality of proposals.

I don't know anything about the MD/MPH program or the EM department. I'd imagine the MPH program is pretty easy for med students to get into, though.

yeah im interested in the MD/MPH program as well. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the three of us most active on here are all first years, and I'm pretty sure no one in our class is doing a joint MD/MPH, because those who were interested in it were asked to do their MPH their first year (rather than third or fifth years), and start their MD with the class of 2015.

Off the top of my head, there are at least 5 students currently doing the MD/MPH [in the MPH year] from my class... so the group that would be matching tomorrow had they not taken a year off. It's my impression taht if you want to do it - you can do it, no problem. There is an application near the end of 3rd year, which is more of a formality than anything.

EM is a very popular speciality over the last few years at UVA. I'm matching EM tomorrow... just dont know hwere! People match into the top programs across the country... so while we may not be the biggest trauma center, you will have enough "connections" at UVA to get letters to go anywhere you want... if you are competitive.

In terms of numbers: Class of '08 = 12, '09=15 people, '10=10 people, '11 = 11! Over the last few years people match at Cinci, Northwestern, Emory, Vanderbilt, John's Hopkins, Georgetown, Case Western, UPMC, Carolinas, U Chicago, UNC, Wake Forest, UTSW, BU, Brigham & Womens, Hennepin.... to name a few [with multiple at Vandy, Northwestern, and Cinci]. PM me if you have particular questions...

OH, also - there are EM-based international opportunities for rotations. An EM attending directs a 4th year rotation in Guatemala. Many of those going into EM participated, and lots of others in our class did as well. Plenty of international opportunities.

thanks so much to everybody for the info -- it's makes me even more excited about UVA!! i have accepts at a couple of other schools, but UVA has been so consistently awesome that i'm 99% sure it's perfect for me 🙂

Ditto. I came in not knowing so much about the school but it is just incredible every step of the way!

I'm surprised that you didn't feel the international electives were emphasized, as generally about 70-80% of each class chooses to do an elective or research abroad. As far as I understand, the funding is in place for anyone who wants to do such an elective, although not if you want to do one in the UK or Scotland or something.. for that, I'm pretty sure you'd need an outside scholarship. But for Central/South America, Africa, South Asia, etc.. you're golden.

The Match list is out! So so awesome.

Can the current first years share with us how the new curriculum affects note-taking styles in lecture?

Personally, I always preferred pen and paper for science notes. I'm also the type of person who takes notes to pay attention and then never look at it again. So I am trying to decide on what kind of electronic device to bring to school on a daily basis. So how do you guys take notes in class? Do you look at a lot of things on a computer or do a lot of typing? Is it necessary to have a computer in class and what would happen if I try to take notes on paper and then have an iPad or something for looking at stuff online?

Thanks

You sound like I did in undergrad. I've completely changed the way I study now.

Virtually everyone brings their laptop to class, because there is so much online. We are a paperless system, so all our handouts, instruction sheets, and most of our textbooks are online. We also have learning objectives for each session, which most of us type out. There are a handful of people who don't do them (more at the beginning of the year, but as they actually pull their test questions out of the LOs, more and more people have started doing them), and a handful of people who write out the LOs on paper.

There is one student in our class who uses an iPad (that I know of), and he seems to get along pretty well, but he doesn't take notes on paper.

One of the problems with your (and my old) note taking style is that lectures tend not to correlate very directly with the learning objectives, and when they do, they move too fast for anyone to really take notes. Most of your work, in either case, will be done outside the classroom; class is really just there to reinforce concepts, not to actually learn the material. So, for some topics, it might work for you to do a pen and paper note taking, and others, you simply won't be able to. But it's really difficult to describe what it's like without you really having experienced it.

Moral of the story: you can probably get away without bringing a computer to class most days, but I would wait until you experience the system to figure that out.

Edit: One of my classmates said today that he actually just figured out how to study a week ago. So take that for what it's worth.

Ah thank you, I will definitely wait and see then.

On another note, has any other incoming students received an email about orientation/matriculation? I called the office about something else and was told over the phone that such an email was being sent out this week.

current students attending bar night: are you going to reveal yourselves? ie color you'll be wearing?
