I have a question about the In-State Educational Priveleges portion of the secondary. There are two sections on it - one for the applicant, and one for parents. I am married, and have lived in VA as a resident for several years now, although my parents live in Pennsylvania. In the section for the applicant, I filled out all of the information about how long I've lived here, taxes, voter registration, etc.

Section B, for parents, asks things like "How long have you lived in Virginia?" It seems like none of these questions will apply, so do my parents need to fill out this section, even though I'm no longer a dependent?

Perhaps someone else has run into this? If not, I will call the school for more information and share what I find out.

Based on what they told me, dependent for tax purposes is different than dependent for in-state purposes. I, for example, am going to file independent for taxes, but dependent for in-state tuition/admissions. So yeah I would call the office of financial aid (this is who I talked to) and explain your situation.

Thanks spartan,
I didn't realize that the two aren't neccessarily the same. I'll check with the office of financial aid to be sure, but it sounds like they might like information from parents anyway.

Just got an interview invite!

I'm OOS...submitted secondary on 7/13. I'm pumped!! 🙂

Woe, Takk! Congratulations!! Wow, I didn't see it starting this early with UVA. Care to share your stats??? Pretty please???:xf:

Wow. I am oos and i received invite too! My first interview invite! I am so damn happy now! In rapture! Submitted just two weeks ago and my letters are not even all in yet! UVa is my top choice! I feel so good! Thanks!

im OOS and got an invite today too.. anyone understanding how to schedule it? i feel pretty idiotic but i don't see any dates on the calendar to click, just the confirm button..

Interview invite here as well--OOS.

Click 'August' at the top, as the first available interviews are at the end of August. Select 'September' if you want to attend in September, etc. Then click the day you'd like to attend. Just as a heads up, once you select a date and confirm, you're locked in. The only way to reschedule is to call the office.

:luck: to everyone! I'm super pumped about UVa.

Yay invite OOS!!

Do we know if OOS/IS will have equal chances post-interview?

For those who have interviews, be sure to update the interview thread.

wow, pretty sad I couldn't figure that out haha but thank you for the help!

I read all I could find about the rotations away from CVille, and I'm wondering if anyone can share his/her experiences in this program.

Do you spend 20 continuous weeks away without coming back? Where do you live in the other places? Is it a valuable experience? etc.

I have specific and practical questions because I will have my family with me during medical school and am thinking about what it would be like to spend so much time away from them.

Anybody know how to get a digital copy of a passport photo besides getting one done at a place like CVS/Walgreens and then scanning it?

Congrats to those who have been invited for an interview. Now if they would only extend one my way! Should I be discouraged at this point because I was complete on 7/12?

meep. I'm in the same boat, but maybe they don't review applications in strict order of completion... that's what I'm telling myself anyway. based on last year's thread, they seem to send out interview invites in pretty consistent one-week batches, so don't hold your breath until next Tuesday. hehe

Some mondays as well it looks like..

I'm starting my first year at UVa in ~1.5 weeks so I'm not speaking from personal experience, but as far as I know the answers to your questions are:
1) It is not a continuous 20 weeks. It's up to 20 weeks total, but whatever amount of time you're away is split up over rotations.
2) They set you up with housing. Sometimes you live in dorms inside the hospital, other times you live in apartments across the street.
3) Spending time away from Charlottesville isn't ideal, but from what I understand, you get a lot more autonomy and hands-on training. Surgery at the Salem hospital is supposed to be an incredible learning experience. You have less residents vying for attention than at the UVa academic center, so you get to do more. That definitely makes up for having to leave the familiarity of Charlottesville for a while.

I believe if you have a family, you can actually stay in Charlottesville (or they at least reduce your time away considerably). Again, these answers are just my impressions after talking to older students, I could be wrong on stuff.

CVS can give you a CD with the images, you might have to ask though. They gave me one without any problems.

Congrats to those with interviews! We were emailed assigned dates last year, so it looks like they switched it up for this cycle. Before they interviewed Monday through Thursday, made and mailed out decisions on Friday. Very quick turnaround.

Any idea about how long it takes to get the secondary from when you were verified?

Yay invite OOS!!

Do we know if OOS/IS will have equal chances post-interview?

IS have a much higher acceptance rate; OOS is pretty tough.

FWIW, I am positive that the early bird gets the worm - if you interview in September, all else being equal, you have a better chance than if you interview in, say November...

I couldn't find data on their interview/acceptance ratio, especially not separate data for IS/OOS. The interview/matriculate ratio doesn't say anything since IS is more likely to matriculate of course. I understand that OOS have a much tougher time getting an interview, but after they do interview (in, say, September), they still have much less of a chance than IS interviewees? I guess it also depends on the interview and how you demonstrate your desire to be there. But I'd hate to think it's not worthwhile to interview there as an OOS.

Yea thanks for the great info! I'm actually kind of surprised more people don't apply. Oh well, better chances for all of us that do I guess 😀

Actually, eduer.com has outdated info. According to MSAR last year 762 IS and 3253 OOS applied, much more than eduer's info. However, the numbers they interview remain about the same: 153 IS and 377 OOS interviewed. So I guess the post-interview acceptance rates still remain about the same.

For those of you invited to interview, did you receive any confirmation/contact email after you scheduled the date online? I didn't. I'm wondering if I shall email Janet to confirm, or just assume it will be okay? More generally, do schools typically contact interviewees after invitation and before interview?

I'd guess that acceptance rates will be significantly lower for your cycle, given that:
a) Around 20 seats in the class have been filled already, due to deferrals from our class.
b) The new curriculum and building apparently increased applicant interest, and thus the school's yield, by quite a bit. They'll likely send a significantly smaller percentage of acceptances out this year, to play it safe.

But still, even with a lower acceptance rate, your chances are very good, even for OOS applicants.

Thanks for the info! WOW, 20 deferrals !!! What's wrong with your class ?!?!
And by the way, do you know if they still interview 6 applicants per day this year? Or they are increasing the number of interview spots?

Schools have formulas based on past cycles' data that allow them to predict how many offers they need to send out to reach a desired class size. Most of the time they undershoot that total number by a little bit, which is what the waitlist is for.

UVa sent out enough offers that, based on their formula, would net a class size of 148. After the magic day of May 15th, our class had 189. I guess people really liked the new curriculum and facilities, haha. The new building has enough room to accomodate 162 people, so they aimed to get down to that at the most. Other schools' waitlists were moving, so some students left to matriculate elsewhere. UVa encouraged people to defer (first eliminating the normal restrictions on deferrals, later offering scholarships to people who either deferred or did an MPH year first). The combination of all these things resulted in a class that was 157 at the last official count, although that was way back when in early June - a better guess is 154.

That's why there's so many people already in the class. Sorry for the rambling, haha.

I'm guessing they will still do the 6 per day approach, just because they seem to value the quick turnaround on decisions. Maybe they'll tell us about it during Orientation.

For those of you who have already received interview invites, what was the first available day?

August 30th was the first day I think. I guess the quick turnaround won't matter until October 15.

Steeler, thanks for your long post. I cannot keep smiling while reading it! Must be hard to persuade people to delay by a year, heh.

I also didn't receive a confirmation email. Once you've chosen a date, the 'Interview' tab when you login should bring you straight to your selected date. Mine says "You have been scheduled to interview on XXXX."

More or less the same day they started last year, then.

And yes, due to AAMC requirements, many earlier interviewees won't get the benefit of UVa's fast response. Last year, the initial decisions were received in the mail on 10/17 and 10/19 (Saturday and Monday).

My initial interview date was 9/21, but I rescheduled to 10/23 (a Thursday). They were supposed to mail out our decisions on Friday, but were delayed to Monday. I received the envelope on 10/29, a Wednesday. Imagine that - they were delayed, and I still heard back in six days.

omgggggg are they really still doing snail mail decision letters? SOOOO nerve-racking

It's such a nightmare finding a flight to and from Charlottesville, there are no direct flights anywhere!

Are there any bigger airports close by (less than 2 hours) where I can fly directly to?

I agree. The physical letter also allows you to go running to significant people in your life, waving it frantically in the air. 😎

For anyone interested in the new building, here is a link to a construction website that they sporadically update with photos, including two pictures of the finished upstairs lecture hall in the July section: http://www.fm.virginia.edu/fpc/FeaturedProjects/ClaudeMooreMedical/ClaudeMooreMedical.htm

There's also a webcam showing the exterior. I snuck inside a few days ago--I just moved into my apartment--and it is amazing. The TEAL room where our group-classes will be held is filled with large circular tables, projectors and columns. You have to be standing in it to get the full effect. It's quite a sight. The admissions area has been greatly improved, and the room where you hear the presentation for UVa is much larger and more formal. I also peeked inside the student lounge area upstairs, but I don't want to ruin it for people. The downstairs area that houses the simulation center and standardized patient rooms was still off-limits, but I heard that they've been moving a lot of equipment down there.

Besides that, I'm finding that Charlottesville is an interesting town. When you come for your interview, if you're looking for a really good, cheap place near campus, I recommend Revolutionary Soup. It is right in the restaurant area that borders campus, so it shouldn't be difficult for you to walk there and find it. Also, take some time to explore the campus, or at least walk down the lawn. It's a really beautiful place.

The medical school threw a free party at a local pub a few days ago, and I like all of the other first-year students that I met. The second and fourth year students who I spoke to were all wildly enthusiastic about the school, too, which is a relief because there is obviously no reason at this point for them to be holding anything back. I keep hearing that the administration is very responsive to student concerns and that they try to make it the least stressful that they possibly can. I was also told that my class will be able to take all of our quizzes--and possibly our final exams, as well?--online anytime between Friday and Sunday night. The students at Mount Sinai seemed to really appreciate that they could do that when I was there, so I'm glad that we will have that option.

Good luck everyone! I may sign up to be a student-host, so maybe I'll be seeing some of you.

Richmond International--1.5 hours.

Whoa, that's big. Cool. Yeah, Mount Sinai students seemed really happy about having that flexibility. I'll try to get stuff done immediately Friday so I have the rest of the weekend to chill, but it's nice to know you have some more time if you're not feeling comfortable about the material.

As Justin pointed out, Richmond isn't that far away. DC is about 3 hours away, and you can take a bus or train down to Charlottesville (the timing can be a little weird, though, so definitely make your plans well in advance). When I interviewed, I flew directly into Charlottesville and then took a bus up to DC and flew out of Reagan. When I went back for second-look, I flew in and out of Dulles.

Hopefully another interview invite batch will come out today / tomorrow!

Do Richmond or Dulles (DC). Richmond is only 60-70miles away and a straight shot on I64, plus they have a nice fairly quiet airport. Dulles is another option, it is closer to charlottesville than Reagan, and its about 2 hours away depending on traffic on I66 and such....

Where are you coming from?

CHO airfares have actually been very competitive with Dulles and RIC fares in recent months.

RIC is much easier to get to and from than Dulles. Don't use Reagan.

And if the interview day format is the same as last year, your interviews are over around 3 pm...the financial aid pitch that comes afterward is optional, and certainly can be missed, if you need to schedule a return flight at an out of town airport.

I'm coming from California. GARRRh

Thanks for the tips and I'll try RIC and Dulles. I found one non-stop one-way flight to Dulles for almost 800 dollars. hahha...
