Interview invite today! Complete 8/6. 3.8/37S
Congrats!
I have a question for you guys getting invites. Did Yale send a separate email saying you were complete? Or did your status on the website just go "In review". I submitted my app 7/27 and my status says "In review on 7/28" but I haven't gotten any emails from them. Thanks!

Didn't get any sort of "complete" e-mail before the interview invite. Good luck!

I didn't get a separate complete email either. Submitted 8/11, "in review on" 8/18.

Wow that's really quick on their part. Congrats and good luck!
As for me, I will just sit and wait I suppose...

Is anybody interviewing on 10/1 with the PM group?

I'm on 10/1 with the AM group! Just missed you. :/ I need to get out earlier in order to catch a flight home. Perhaps we'll see each other during the interview day anyway. Where are you planning on staying in New Haven?

I just finished the Yale BioStep program (10 weeks of the summer at Yale), so I'm much more comfortable trusting the train schedules, etc than I normally would be in a new city. I'm staying with a friend in NYC on Thursday, taking the train to New Haven Friday morning, and then taking the train back up to NYC to stay for the weekend.

By the way, if you want to save money, the train is $14 one-way and takes you straight from Grand Central in NYC to Union Station in New Haven. I'm pretty sure flights are cheaper to JFK/La Guardia than to Tweed-New Haven or Bradley, but it sounds like you already booked the ticket! Also, from what I read we'll still be together for the orientation, financial aid session, and tour, we just interview at different times. I'm looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the interviewees!

Use it to your advantage a.k.a. to reveal more about yourself a.k.a. you should probably use your diversity essay.

1) the diversity essays for other schools specifically mentions about both your uniqueness AND educational benefits you may bring. should I do the same for Yale and mention both things?

2) is it awkward if I mention both diversity stuff and what i'm doing my yr off? (graduated 2010) ...Just try to tie them together somehow...?

3) how important is it to send in secondaries early?
i can either submit them soon, just mention the research i THINK i'll be doing (research start date: oct). OR wait til end of oct when I can talk more about the research.

THANKS for y'all's input

question. if people who were complete after me heard back before me, does that mean anything?

Anyone who submitted within the last 3 weeks or so get a secondary yet?

Does Yale send an email with an invitation to fill out a secondary application, or do you just fill it out yourself, from their website?

^^^ Fill it out yourself from the website after your submit your AMCAS..(if I remember correctly)

Cut down by another Ivy! MSTP rejection by email 🙂 Good luck all!

HEYY!~!!! Fooorgeeeet about it~!

They dont know what they are missing...you'll be a real doc, one way or the other, right? G-LOC 👍

You can fill it out without invite but they do send an email after you are verified to invite you to fill it out if you haven't.

Also, did anyone send in the fee waiver to them? If you did how long did it take to post to your account as recived to mark you "complete"?

Cheapest and the one I recommend would obviously be with a student host. They can usually teach you stuff about the school.
That being said, if you want to stay at a hotel, go prob to the LaQuinta Inn. It's a bit farther off then the two main hotels but it's also significantly cheaper and they have a shuttle that drops you off right at the door that comes whenever you want.

1) there's nothing you can write that's "wrong." Write down whatever you feel best illustrates you and your passion for medicine, however that might be interpreted.

2) No course not. If you're interested in something, say cute puppies, and you spend the year off trying to save cute puppies, then you're proving you have a commitment towards it.

3) It's still important but not as much as other schools. Yale is obviously non-rolling but the earlier you submit, the more interview slots are available, esp since the interviewing season started earlier this year.

It's on the website. Just fill it out.

Yale doesn't go perfectly in order so this can happen.

Does Yale even have a student host program? I didn't see any information about one. (Edit: wait! I found the info. thanks for bringing it up. i must have glanced over it the first time.) I was planning on staying with a friend there (undergraduate).

given DrGerrard's question i guess mine is:

does yale send out rejections, or are they one of the schools that is like "oh hmm this guys not good enough for an interview, so lets just throw him into a maybe pile, and we'll give him a rejection at the end if we run out of slots"??

ive been under review since 7-26 (although i sent in an additional letter of rec later, could that have reset my standing in the review timeline?) so idk if ive been passed over or still under review.

So I have back to back interviews here and in NYC. What's the best (read: dirt cheapest) way to get between NYC and New Haven?

When I filled out my AMCAS, I lumped all of my teaching and tutoring experiences into one 'activity. On Yale's secondary it asks us to list activities in order or importance, so should I/can I separate out my teaching experiences (because I have some that I would say are much more significant than others)?

I would separate them if you can talk significantly about each/all of them.

I was researching Yale, and it seems only 100 out of 245 accepted applicants actually decide to enroll. Is there a reason for such low enrollment numbers? I personally can't imagine why so many people would decline an offer of admission from Yale.

Even Harvard usually has 60 or so students go elsewhere. Top schools all compete for the same pool of top applicants...both with other top schools and with the state schools and local schools that might offer personal benefits to the applicant ($$$, family, significant other, location). It's a complicated decision.

I see. But that's only 60 people, and 154 out of 222 applicants to Penn also choose to enroll. Only 100 out of 245 accepted to Yale choosing to enroll seemed too low compared to other top schools, so I thought there might be a mistake in the data (maybe they meant to type 200, not 100).

W/e, I guess it's irrelevant. I'd go in a heartbeat if they accepted me.

I think the reason for that is #1) New Haven and #2) Yale System.

New Haven tends to get a bad rep, but after being here, it's really actually quite nice. Everyone wants to be in the big cities, like I thought I would be, but I've realized that if you're honest to yourself, you're not going to have time to just go out every night, esp after your first year.

Second, the Yale system. I think people don't really understand it when they apply so people just apply anyways. It's very unique, no doubt about it. But it's one of those things that fit certain people and not others. I tend to like flexibility in how I study and be given that freedom to do whatever, but some people really prefer and are used to a strict routine/guidelines like they often have in undergrad. So...they might not like it. It's a self-selective thing.

All being said, and by no means am I biased, I feel many top schools will provide you that excellent source of education, attention, and opportunities. Yale like those are no different. The little nuances you just have to be open to and not just go for the best ranked. It's dumb to do so.

I'm trying to decide which airport to land in. The New Haven airport is really expensive, where as landing in La Guardia in NYC is much cheaper. Beta Cell mentioned that a train goes from Grand Central in NYC to Union Station in New Haven. When is the last train of the day?

Google "metronorth", which is the train from Grand Central to New Haven. The trains pretty much run every hour on the hour from 4am to 1am so it shouldn't be a problem getting the train. NHV is at the end of the line. :luck:!

fly into hartford and take the connecticut limo www.ctlimo.com down to phelps gate in new haven. you can also take the ct limo from la guardia airport too.

So my pre-med committee uploaded my letter packet on 8/26/2010 but Yale still hasn't updated its status. Is it wise to call them?

New Haven quiet nice?? Come on... New Haven is a dump and plenty unsafe and I think it is the main reason some students end up going elsewhere. If Yale were in Cambridge, Chicago or Manhattan it would be the most competitive med school in the country, no doubt.

A Yale University policy includes not to have any "cash transactions in campus buildings, theaters, auditoriums, etc". You can not sell tickets to events, or sell cookies, or whatever because of the fear and high risk of muggings and assaults. That should tell you something,

Don't get me wrong. I would love to go to this school, especially because the Yale System is so awesome and the academics are top notch. But, New Haven is a big downside and one needs to be aware of it.

Brainbuff, I definitely agree with you. I think the same goes for Hopkins and U. Penn as well.

We are on the same page. I was going to mention those two schools as well.

First...don't call. They are busy. A phone call this time of the year blows for them. Especially when (second) they respond AMAZINGLY well to email. Like, within 30 minutes sometimes.

I had this same problem and it really is a clerical thing; the people who review the apps are not the people who update this status. In fact, I got an interview invite BEFORE my letters were shown as being "there".

I would email if you need to make contact at all, make sure you include your AMCAS number, and explain the issue. But don't call...they're busy🙂 Good luck.

Thanks for the tip! The reason why I asked is because other schools said that they experienced issues with downloading the LORs through AMCAS on that particular date, so I wanted to make sure... I will e-mail them right now!

I live by Penn, and its really not a bad area. Don't get me wrong, if you go to far in three out of four directions, it does get bad. But the area has a worse name, a while ago, it wasn't safe past 38th st. Now, because of the work Penn has done, Walnut and further south (really the main Penn area) are quite safe and have really cute nice neighborhoods out past 50th or so. I feel completely safe walking alone at night as a woman.

Schools that are actually in crappy neighborhoods are schools like USC.
