Thanks for the tip! The reason why I asked is because other schools said that they experienced issues with downloading the LORs through AMCAS on that particular date, so I wanted to make sure... I will e-mail them right now!

Korsian, did that work out for you? My letters still show as not being received...I called them before, but it seems like they can't do much over the phone. Were they able to help you become complete when you emailed them?

I live by Penn, and its really not a bad area. Don't get me wrong, if you go to far in three out of four directions, it does get bad. But the area has a worse name, a while ago, it wasn't safe past 38th st. Now, because of the work Penn has done, Walnut and further south (really the main Penn area) are quite safe and have really cute nice neighborhoods out past 50th or so. I feel completely safe walking alone at night as a woman.

Schools that are actually in crappy neighborhoods are schools like USC.

Eh, USC is similar to Penn in that the immediate area surrounding the school is pretty nice. However, USC's radius of niceness is (much) smaller than Penn's.

Sorry to derail. :luck:

i can't believe we have to wait until march...i'm already antsy, and it's only been TWO WEEKS

sigh...

RB93, I sent an e-mail this morning but no response from them yet! Stay tuned.

=/ My app was completed 8/5 and I haven't heard anything from them. My stats are almost identical to yours. should I be worried? I haven't heard back from anyone, I'm antsy with anticipation!!

My stats are also almost identical, and I haven't heard back from anyone either! I am so glad I'm not the only one...

haha defintely helps to hear that. :/ wonder if the next round of interviews are out? according to this forum seems like only one round of interviews have been out so far?

RB93, I sent an e-mail this morning but no response from them yet! Stay tuned.

I also sent an email but no response yet. Is it taking/did it take anyone a really long time for letters to be marked complete (a month+)? Maybe they're really inundated, but this seems abnormally long.

Mine were marked complete within a week (I submitted them back in early August).

Same as Cole here. Mine were completed within a week but then I submitted in early August as well. My USC ones are taking forever - its almost been 6 weeks and they havent been added!. I emailed them multiple times and each time they just said wait another couple weeks. try emailing admissions?

That's funny, my USC ones uploaded quickly but my Yale ones are taking forever. I emailed admissions but I guess I'll call again later in the week...would suck for someone's app to be stuck in limbo somewhere.

I really hope that's not what happened. do you think because our letters are delayed we're stuck at the bottom of the pile? :/

Interview invite yesterday. Complete two weeks ago. Love the school and the program, so really looking forward to it.

Does YSM require applicants to send in a personal photo? I don't recall it asking for one at any point in the application or emails, but I seem to remember a thread where someone listed Yale as one of the schools that asks for a physical picture to be mailed to them. No?

They ask you to send a digital copy of a photo via email if you receive an interview invite.

I have a question regarding the interview day itself, if anyone can help....

I'd like to get to see Yale's (beautiful) main campus. Does the interview day tour cover this at all, or should I wander over to take a look before my interview? I'm staying at the New Haven Hotel.

I'm in the PM Session on my day, which doesn't start until 10:45 AM.

Just wanted to follow up - I received an e-mail saying that they electronically received my recommendations; it was in line to be manually checked. For some reason, my packet was marked received on September 15. However, my file was not marked complete until September 21.

For those who are keeping anecdotal tabs on status changes, my recommendations went in on August 26, so it seems like it takes about a month for Yale to mark an applicant complete.

does anyone know the email to send an email to the admissions office?

The main campus is not included in the tour, but if you have the time, I would definitely meander on over for a visit

For those who've interviewed already, would you mind telling us how it was? Relaxed? Strict? Friendly?

Yale's my top choice, so I'd really appreciate any kind of information you might have.

You're in for a treat.... I came into the interview thinking Yale was my top choice (based on the info on their admissions website), and I definitely had that notion continuously reaffirmed during my stay. Everyone I met was really friendly, my student host went above anything I expected, and my interviewers were the most amazing people. I was greeted with a hug by my first interviewer before being led to the interview room with his arm around me. My second interviewer was just as stress-free: I don't think I was asked a single question!

I truly got the sense that everything about it felt like home, and I really hope you feel the same way. I got the sense that Yale looks for applicants who are a great "fit", so I hope the feeling is mutual!

Hahaha, I can see how my wording can hint at those overtones, and while seducing your interviewer can be a great way to get into medical school, that really wasn't the case here. It was a very endearing gesture, and actually made me feel comfortable before the interview. I'm not kidding, this man was kindness personified. From what my student host told me, if he interviews you and you get in, he keeps in touch and almost serves as a mentor. Sorry for the confusing wording, hopefully you get a chance to meet him!

Totally relaxed, really conversational. It's actually a pretty great interview day. My only thing is that I didn't get to meet a great deal of current students, and most of them were first years. Staying with a student host can help with this though.

I definitely didn't have anything close to a stress interview. 🙂 So basically, what was said above is spot on (though I didn't get a hug... should've worn a tighter suit. Just kidding!)

Some insightful tidbits for those interviewing soon:

Although it seems like a lot of people's interviews were pretty conversational, not all interviewers were like that. Be prepared to answer lots of detailed questions. My first interviewer was really friendly, but asked me all kinds of questions on virtually everything on my AMCAS. My other interviewer was incredibly intimidating and questioned if I even had a strong enough background in biology to go to medical school (I'm an engineer but taking advanced bio classes this semester). He showed me the door around 25 minutes into what was supposed to be an hour long interview:scared: . My student hostess (who was super cool and went above and beyond) said he is just an intimidating person, so I'm trying not to take it personally. This was my first interview and I only had a vague idea what to expect. I'm sure if I had interviewed towards the end of my most-likely-over med school interview trail it wouldn't have been as bad.

The tour does not include the main campus, but it's not too far and there are a lot of shuttles in that direction. Go after you're done for the day. However, the tour guides took us to the anatomy lab (really gorgeous and doesn't smell like formaldehyde) and the medical library (gorgeous as well). At the basement of the med school library, we saw the Cushing Tumor registry, which are jars of preserved brains and parts of brains that all have tumors in them. Suuuuper Cool! There is also a financial aid workshop. After touring campus and talking to students, you'll be psyched to go to yale, but once you find out it costs $300,000 to go, you will no longer want to go there, unless your parents are wealthy or poor. Overall, great day. In an ideal world, I would looove to go there if accepted. Realistically, I doubt I will matriculate. I simply can't justify the expense. Yale is awesome, but not $300,000 worth of awesome.

My 2 cents. Hope it helps!

I definitely agree with the two people who posted before me: Yale was totally relaxed and stress free. My second interviewer actually took me to observe a replacement cornea he had put in earlier in the day in the middle of our interview!

The student hosts were amazingly cool and went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable, informed, and had a good time. This was my top choice going into interview season, and my trip definitely helped to keep it that way.

Don't stress. Just go over the details of your application materials and I'm sure it will go great.

All of the private schools are just as ridiculous when it comes to expense. Yale is no different than any of the rest.

If you didn't know that going into this process, you'll have wasted a lot of money on interview trips to places you won't be willing to pay for in any case. My two cents (especially for any kids out there reading this and considering applying in the future).

I dunno what schools you're looking at, but $300k+ is by far not the norm, even for private schools. I would say that most that I've seen seem to average around $50-60k/yr. But perhaps that's just the schools that I've looked at (Chicago being the exception). Even Chicago is just over the $300k mark, and their tuition is a ridiculous at ~$75k a year for the first two years and ~$85k a year for the second two.

Thanks for the interview info!

By the way, Yale's annual tuition is $42,350, with housing around $11,000, so the total for 4 years would cost about $220,000. Where did the 300K figure come from?

Exactly, all I meant was that Yale is the same ballpark as the other top-tier private schools. And 300k is way off. I forget this, as I'm looking at 5-year MD/MBA programs.

Compare:
Yale
Tuition $43,850 Required fees $500 Room and board $11,310
University of Chicago
Tuition $38,970 Required fees $3,379 Room and board $17,000

You're missing fees, food, transportation, and allowances for other things.

BTW, Most private schools are in the same ballpark. There is no difference if the school is top-tier or middle or bottom, though the scholarships and aid might differ.

For Yale, the total COA (per the school's website) averages ~$70k a year. That's still only $280k. Granted that's still a ridiculously large amount of debt, but it really isn't out of line with most schools.

Breaching the $300k barrier really doesn't happen that often. The only schools I know of off the top of my head that do so are Chicago and Tufts. I'm sure there are others, but they're not the rule.

Of the schools I visited, Temple (semi-private) is 75,000 and FIU (public) is ~ 85,000 a year. I was completely surprised by FIU's COA (their tuition is 55k OOS and have another 5-8k of fees for OOS).
But certainly they are in the minority. At least my state schools total less than 200k in debt (assuming no aid).

This opened quite the can of worms! OK so maybe 300k is a little too much on the high side. Don't get me wrong, Yale is by far the favorite program that I interviewed that. If it didn't cost twice as much as my #2 choice, (Baylor, where it costs $35,000 per year to go) I would be there in a heartbeat. Ultimately, I will have to make my choice based on a combination of affordability, fit, and educational quality, with affordability being the most important factor, not purely the best-fit medical school that I get into, but I know I'm not the only one.

Also, some private schools are better than others about financial aid, grants, scholarships, etc. From my understanding, Yale is really good about helping out people from disadvantaged backgrounds go there, but my parents (who I haven't relied on for financial support for 3 years) make too much money for me to qualify for any aid, but not so much that they can realistically afford to contribute to my education

Man I have been venting on this thread! I apologize

PS the 300K figure came from talking to a couple of the students there, they were refering to international students who don't qualify for anything

Psh, at my state schools you can probably get out for less than $125k. Maybe even below $100k if you try.

This is definantly at the top of my list as far a schools go, despite being in New haven. I'm in Syracuse which is very simular. Campus is great, but get about 3 blocks away and it turns into a pretty rough neighborhood. We've had several lockdowns due to drive-by shootings near campus. It's not my favorite thing but the wya the school curriculum works makes up for the shady surrounding neighborhood.

Non-grading, no lame compitition/backstabbing. Awesome. Stanford does the same thing <3

Finally complete last night! Let's see if I get any love.

Side note: At least New Haven makes for interesting patient demographics 🙂.

The students here are so passionate, and the school is super protective of its students. The Yale campus is absolutely beautiful. I loved my interview here.

I can't believe I have to wait until like March for a decision. :xf:

Hello everyone,

So I got an interview invite here today and I wanted to ask those who
have interviewed about the actual end time. I am trying to miss the least school possible and I want to return right after my morning interview session. The e-mail said approximately 2:30 and I wanted to ask if that was a good approximation? Thanks.

Just got done with interviews.

The 2 interviews were supposed to last 30 minutes each, but both ended up lasting 1 hour. Really friendly and encouraging, but also very detailed. Both interviewers had really reviewed my application. Overall, I had a great impression and it definitely made me want to come.

Yeah that is a good approximation for a morning interview time🙂 Between 230 and 3.

Yeah they made this comment about having "obsessed over our applications" before we got there. Both awesome and scary🙂

I am completely in love with this school. It really was amazing.

Just got my interview invite today. Super excited. My 2nd yet. I still haven't gotten any rejections yet so my cycle is going good so far
