Quick question about the length of the Why Yale essay. It says 500 words, but I'm wondering how strictly people are following the word count. It doesn't cut you off if you have a longer essay. So have people generally stayed within the word limit or is anyone going over?

Just like anything else, a little over probably won't be noticeable. 1000 words will be.

I stayed under - you can easily do it in 500 words. It's actually a lot.

Do you think Yale would mind us posting prompts from other applications and our responses to them? I'm wondering if this would be seen in a positive light...or not haha. I'm thinking of putting up a moral/ethical dilemma prompt.

A moral/ethical prompt prob won't address the prompt very well. That being said - I wouldn't do it in general.

That was in light of the "optional essay", not the prompt question haha

they wont actually count words or cut you off, but just try to stick to the limit

I would stick to any application directions very strictly. There's no reason to give anyone at admissions even the tiniest reason for viewing your application in a negative light, especially when there's always something already lacking in everyone's application (ECs, GPA, etc.)

Hmm... I got the Yale secondary invite today!!! Wow, I really thought I would be rejected outright... Yay! 🙂 Do they screen for secondaries???

I have the same question...

It says right in the e-mail that they don't screen. Do you guys read?

Haha, well, reading is over rated and too time consuming... 🙂 I went back and thoroughly read the email... You're right, it alludes to the fact that everyone gets to fill out a secondary. Oh well, still glad I got the invite because I didn’t want to submit without it!

Wow so the process has begun for you guys already...

Again - take some time to really learn about the system and think about how it fits you specifically. They really put weight on fit.

How many of you wrote/are writing the optional essay? I'm wondering if it's mainly for people who have extenuating circumstances or anything pressing to convey to the admissions officers. I don't wanna seem like i'm writing an essay just to fill space.

For this kind of question I usually write about my family situation. It's had a profound impact on my development and I usually don't get a chance to mention it anywhere else in the app.

If you don't have anything to discuss, I wouldn't worry about it. I think it would do more harm than good to write about something just to put something down.

Agreed.

Cole, do you think a family situation essay (particularly as in obstacles overcome) would be appropriate for such an optional essay?

It might be, I think, considered an obstacle. It was certainly not a benefit. Really, though, I just want to get that part of my life out there because it's significant and I usually don't get the chance to share it.

As far as appropriate, I'm not sure what wouldn't be appropriate. Obviously if you worked as a pimp at some point you wouldn't want to mention that. But everything is fair game... I'm not sure why anyone would be too worried about "appropriate."

On the optional section i usually update them on a research activity that I think is significant, but was not included on my amcas due to my starting it in June. Do you guys think it's appropriate to do an activities update on this section?

yes indeed

Just curious, how many of you used near or all of the 500 words for the prompt about your specific interest in Yale?

Submitted today! One of my top choices, really hoping for an interview!

in the list activities section, how would you say you don't plan on stopping an activity? 1/2010-??

Haven't written mine yet but I expect of to be close to the limit. Cornell asked the same question except they had a 200 word limit. I didn't feel like I had enough space to explain everything.

I used my University of Chicago essay with a few cosmetic edits. My experience interviewing at both schools were that they were somewhat similar in their educational philosophy. They both expect you to do things outside of classroom; Yale also strongly encourages interdisciplinary work and gives you the flexible time to pursue it.

You are right, do not use the Cornell essay for Yale. School's get pissed off when you don't use all available space to wax poetic about how much you love their program.

me too, got the exact same vibe regarding the two schools. I also used the chicago essay for yale.

Any other thoughts on this??
I think I just put an end date in the future (like June or July of the following year) and made it so all my activities that I was continuing had the same "end date." It's really not a big deal

Yeah, that sounds like a good approach. I guess the only thing is what if I end up stopping something earlier than I thought I would, but I suppose they wouldn't hold that against you.

Thanks

On the activities list, can you omit the month and just put the years (they have both ways on their example list?) And also, are we only supposed to pick a subset of our AMCAS activities?

Yes, I believe so on both counts.

Are Yale lectures optional? I see Yale as the pinnacle of my preference for self-study over lecture-then-test, especially in terms of biology classes, but I could be wrong.
Yep. Recorded and all. Seminars you do have to attend but I think those are neat.

Dear Yale,

Please take me. I am good at not being ranked or earning grades for the first two years.

Sincerely,

curlytop

P.S. I also look quite fetching in Yale Blue.

question. when filling out the secondary, for the letters of recommendation, i have a letter packet from my university. but i am using amcas letter service. for institutions, do i put aamc or my university?

I can't remember the instructions off the top of my head, but you usually either provide information about each letter writer or simply put the name of your university and note that it's a letter packet. You wouldn't put AAMC in either case.

Check the instructions to make sure.

I submitted my Yale Supplemental application on the 17th and the application status page still reads,

Application completed and in review on: NO

even though they have my References and Fees marked down as received.

For people who have already submitted their application, does anyone have something different there?

I submitted on July 7th, my MCAT was received on July 23rd, LORs on July 26th, and on July 26th it changed to:

Application completed and in review on: 26-JUL-10

Hope that helps.

My goal is to get an interview, getting in should be easy after that.
Considering ... the Situation...

:laugh::laugh::laugh: well said!

Should I be worried that I haven't received the Yale secondary invite as of yet? I added Yale to my AMCAS (that has already been verified) last Friday.

Yale doesn't screen, so you shouldn't be worried at all. It's probably just taking some time for your app to work through their system.

all right, i know i should send my secondaries in within the general rule of thumb 2 weeks time frame, but due to various circumstances (moving back to the States from abroad, starting new job, etc), i haven't send out my yale secondary yet...and it's been almost 5 weeks since i've received it! i know i know, i have really no excuses. i was just burned out.

anyway, ,i know they're non-rolling admissions, but do you think they would view this delay very unfavorably? is it even worth it to submit now? or do you think it doesn't matter that much and i still have a decent shot (compared to if i had sent this in earlier).
