However cool (and cool it is), I doubt it will affect us even if the facilities are all ready. Still, this is interesting and I wonder how it will affect admissions. They'd probably accept more applicants. Rochester and Arizona couldn't be in any more opposite climates!

LOR request on September 7th...I am now neurotically checking my email 3-4 times a day waiting for an update! Applications are sucking the life out of me lol 😀.

Snuke, is the acceptance at the point of interview like 1/4 or 1/5? do they accept 60 off the bat or start with 50? I heard in the past they accepted close to 85

They will only accept 50 applicants to start (with 5 MD/PhD and 2 MD/OMS). As people decline (mostly next Spring in March-May), they will fill empty slots as they become available. There will be no doubling of acceptances this year, as the AZ branch is not opening until entering class of 2014.

Just wondering if anyone else who has interviewed so far gotten a ranked email?

LOR received: 8/18
Rejected: 9/26

Thought the wait would pay off eventually 🙁

To those of you who have heard from Mayo already, when did you submit your primary and how long did it take to hear from Mayo? I submitted mine near the end of July and I haven't heard diddly-squat.

Yes, I had the same question myself. After you've been verified by AMCAS, how long did you have to wait until you heard something? Also, I've read about "fee was accepted". What does that mean? I thought Mayo didnt have any secondary apps.

Everything I've heard and seen about Mayo makes me want this even more. Since I submitted late, I hope I'm not...:beat:

I got a fee request 9/2, fee received 9/6, LOR request 9/14 and haven't heard anything yet...

Sorry but what do you mean when you say I got a fee request... are you talking about the AMCAS fee?😕 I thought Mayo didnt have 2ndary apps...

They don't have a secondary in the sense that there is no written information, you still need to pay a $100 fee directly to Mayo (i.e. NOT the AMCAS fee) before they consider you for an LOR request. I think I got the e-mail within a week or two of my AMCAS being verified. If you haven't you might want to consider contacting the admissions office.

Mayo Medical School - Request For Fee is the title of the email and I got it the day I was verified. Then, you pay the 100$ fee (besides the AMCAS fee), but no secondary to fill out (yay!).
Maybe it's in your spam folder or just call admissions.
Good Luck!

Just returned from stint of no-internet. It was horrifying.

What he said. That'll be 50 out of ~300, since we were told they'd probably interview up to that number this year, making the initial percentage 1/6, which will get more favorable as people decline.

No. Still waiting.

You're not too late - I met a student who had submitted on Oct. 15th. Keep up the hope!

I spoke with a contact of mine who formerly had a high-ranking position with Mayo, and he further convinced me that Mayo is amazing...I can't wait to hear something back from the school. 😀

Some are emergency medicine, pediatrics, medical clowning, two medical mission trips to Honduras, LGBT/HIV medicine in South Beach, Florida, psychiatry, research (x2), music therapy (upcoming), infectious disease. Mine are mostly medical, but the music therapy one is self-designed and mainly aimed at improving my repertoire/technique on the ukulele (no joke). I do play music every week in the main lobby at Mayo, but the school has nothing to do with this and it isn't technically medical in any way. I know other students have done writing selectives, volunteering selectives (not necessarily with medical organizations). You just have to explain what the selective will do for your career - bettering yourself as a person, even in non-medical ways, will ultimately make you a better doctor. They know that 🙂

I forgot to say...

So our tour guide was telling us about this other female student who sings and plays the ukelele as we were walking through the main lobby.

I also used my break time to walk back over and play the piano. It was fun!

Going on almost 5 weeks now since LOR received... I assume that can only mean bad things...f***

Thanks I needed that, I looked at their website and realized that my app may not be verified before Oct.15th... I thought I was out of the running.:xf:

[vent]

why can't mayo get back to me??? Come on!!!

[/vent]

Thanks for the link. We mentioned it, but no one posted this.

From link:

"A major differentiating feature at this new branch of Mayo Medical School: all students will complete a specialized master's degree in the Science of Health Care Delivery granted by ASU [Arizona State University], concurrently with their medical degree from Mayo Medical School, believed to be the first medical school to offer such a program."

Veeeery interesting.

Just got the ranked e-mail. I interviewed less than two weeks ago. I hope getting ranked so soon isnt a bad thing. I really loved the school 😍

I'm pretty sure all it means is that both your interviewers were at the last Adcom meeting, so definitely not bad news. Good luck!

Received the ranked email tonight as well. I'll anxiously wait until October...:xf:

Drat, none for me. Come on, interviewers, we have another shot or two before that magic date...

I'm new at this and hate to ask a stupid question, but can someone explain the significance of a ranked email? 😳

After you interview, your interviewers will have to be present at a big adcom meeting in order to determine your "rank". For simplicity, let's say it is a straight scale 1-5, with 1 being the best and 5 being the worst.

At this aforementioned meeting your overall application (numbers+EC's+interview+etc.) will be ranked according to the above scale. The better your rank the more likely you are to get accepted (i.e. 1's get in right off the bat, 2's more likely to be waitlisted, 5's likely rejected, etc). You get the idea...

Everyone gets ranked at some point, so I don't know what the significance is of mentioning it -- perhaps it's just something to talk about. 😛

Thanks.... i just kept hearing about it and didnt understand how it worked. So the ranked email indicates how well you did in the interview. The higher the ranking, sooner you fill out your change of address
form...ok got it! 😀

How does when you interview affect your rank? because I am interviewing in late late november and obviously there are already people ranked

i don't think it does affect your rank. the only issue with interviewing later is that later in the season, even if you're a 1, they may not have enough room to offer you an acceptance until other people decline.

How much does the interview factor into the ranking/selection process? Do they give more weight to the interview over other aspects of the application (gpa, mcat, ec's) or vice versa?

Just realized I'll be at Mayo in little over a week and almost did a happy dance at work . . . 😍

Can anyone comment on a typical day of a student at the mayo clinic? I can't seem to find information on how long students spend each day in class, labs, etc... I'm pretty sure I love everything about this school, even the stuff I haven't found out yet 😀

today during pediatric selective:

- Wake up, have coffee until 805am(others in the class doing this selective are out shadowing today in anything from gen peds to peds derm/ED/surg/etc.
- Meet Senior Sage (longitudinal geriatrics program) mentor for breakfast, interview and writeup afterwards--unrelated to selective but i had the morning free
- Lunch with peds residency director
- Neonatal resuscitation and umbilical line placement lab in simulator center from 1300-1530

...selective schedules vary widely though...so a more typical class day:

1st year:
8-12 a.m. is lecture/lab/group time. Some days we're out earlier.
12-1: Lunch/Free...usually time for interest group meetings, mentor meetings, attending grand rounds, interviewee lunches, etc.
1-5: Occasional afternoon activities (doctoring coursework, longitudinal development curriculum, volunteer programs, history taking skills, etc.)---on average over the year probably 2-3 afternoons a week have afternoons booked.

2nd year: essentially the reverse of above

3rd and 4th year: as with any medical school, mostly dedicated to time out on the wards so you could have days that are 24-36 hours long and others that are a basic outpatient clinic. Highly variable.

Let me know if you have any more specific or detailed questions.

I got the LOR received email on Wednesday in the afternoon, not the usual nightly email. Has anyone gotten interviews lately?
I know it's a long shot but I want an interview here so badly! Everything sounds so amazing, especially the selectives!

Mind saying when you were complete?!

Your grocery list of invites is too hard to keep up with - did you interview here yet? (Or was this just a general "Mayo = Nirvana" statement?)

Yep I have interviewed here. And unfortunately for my wallet, the grocery list keeps growing.

Although, Mayo = Nirvana. If I was accepted here october 15th-ish, I would be withdrawing immediately from everywhere else.
