I'm definitely going, but last time I stayed with a student host, so maybe I'll use this as my vacation expense.

Are we supposed to find our own place to stay for Thursday night? I assumed they would have us stay with a host again, no?

im definitely coming! does anyone know if there is class of 2016 fb page?

Ahh getting that second look email got me really excited about NYU again. Also, clearly, we should all go out into the city thursday night 😀

I remember hearing on interview day about how NYU had a couple of really nice scholarships. Does anybody know when students find out about these?

Basically, I'm lucky to have some financially great options for medical school and want to know about this in order to withdraw my application asap, if I won't get a scholarship, and open the spot for someone else.

Thanks and good luck to everyone waiting.

idk if this is 100% accurate, b/c the scholarships might've been offered to someone who turned them down first but just to give you a rough estimate: end of april/beginning of may.

I was wondering if anyone knows what we need to apply for financial aid. I know they want the FAFSA, but is there an institutional app as well? Should I wait until I've been accepted or apply anyways even if I'm on the waitlist?

I contacted the admissions office about this earlier. They just want the FAFSA for now. I believe there will be additional financial aid forms sent out later in the year.

They wanted only FAFSA and make sure you put in your parents information on it as well. The due date was March 1. But I'm sure a few days late won't kill you 🙂

Unfortunately I was waitlisted at NYU, but I was thinking about sending a letter of interest. When do you think it would be best to send such a letter? I don't want to send one too early, since they probably aren't re-reviewing files yet. Would April/late March be a good time? Thanks!

I just got an email from financial aid - we'll be able to access our financial aid on April 2nd! Are you guys able to login to "NYU Start" using the net ID they provided you with? I can't seem to access the site but I also just got the email so maybe it takes some time...

Mine worked earlier today.

?_? Didn't get this at all. . .

When did you submit FAFSA? I submitted earlier this week, so I don't know if they have received it yet. Also I have yet to receive any email regarding logging on with an ID.

I submitted FAFSA weeks ago and the email had personalized attachments so I'm pretty sure it's done on an individual basis.

Agreed. The attachments were personalized (contained ID number and NETID), so I am assuming the e-mail will be sent out in waves. It was exciting to set up a NYU account and have an ID number. I felt like a student 😀

quick question to anyone that has responded to the second look invitation.

Did you use the paperless card or did you just email Anne?
Thanks

Anyone flying in from CA. Looks like I might be flying red-eye if I want them cheese and wine.

anyone else having anxiety attacks over April 2nd? really would like to end up here but i don't think i can justify $300,000 in unsubsidized loans.
does anyone have any insight into merit scholarships or need-based aid. like,

- do they notify all applicants that are awarded a scholarship by phone or email before receiving their package or is that only for full rides? and what kind of numbers make you eligible (like MCAT/GPA)?

- and does anyone happen to know what the cut off would be to be considered for need-based aid as far as parents' total income goes (like <50,000 or < 100,000? (i know these are very specific but maybe a current student or someone who has contacted them would know)

:xf:for some mulah!

As I said, a lot of the full ride awards were given out end of April/beginning of May (via email) -- after the initial financial aid packages were presented.
While NYU does have significant money that they do not advertise/that are not as conspicuous as the 2 Vilcek scholarships, the odds are still not great that you will receive one. Scholarships may be merit-, need- or NIETHER-based. The only thing you can do is wait patiently. Disclaimer: I know nothing about actual FinAid mechanics, I'm just commenting based on hearsay.

What does NYU require for Financial Aid? I've submitted a FAFSA. Is that enough?

thanks so much for the response!
yea i am totally not banking on getting a full ride, as i'm sure those are reserved for the students deciding between NYU and every school in the top 10 of the U.S. rankings. but I'm just hoping for *some* kind of help that would make NYU's pricetag more comparable to my in-state option, which is a pretty good school.

thanks again!

FAFSA is all you need (unless things are changing this year, and they aren't changing for current first years, so prob not for you either)

There are only a few merit based scholarships, the Vilcek ones (unless things are changing this year), so obviously the chances of getting one are tiny. I don't know what etherpentane means with scholarships that aren't based on merit or need. I think that's called your parents paying for it? There's a fair amt of money for need-based aid. To give the one example I'm familiar with (aka mine 😀), if your parents and your income combined is somewhere around 90k/year the year you're applying, you would probably get ~25k/year in grants. Having a single mom finally paid off

It's too bad the stupid government cut graduate student loan subsidies...

Aren't all parents considered, and aren't there factors other than income too?

Nope. I forget the rules exactly.. but if a parent is totally not involved then you don't have to get info for them. Email Phyllis Schulz if you want all the details. And of course there are other factors, if you own house/property or have significant investments for ex. Nothing to speak of in those categories for the aforementioned example.

Could someone post the NYU 2012 residency match list? Thanks so much!

The one they sent out has students' names in it, which we shouldn't post, and it's just an image pdf or whatever it's called, where you can't highlight/copy text, so it's energy intensive to get the info into a post. AND we (1st years, the only ones who aren't busy w/ clinical stuff) have a test Friday, so it's probably not going to get posted on SDN this week (if ever, I don't think I'm going to put the effort in..).

Hahaha! Well, could you give me a sense of the overall performance of the class? Any into neurosurgery or plastics? More weighted towards primary care specialties? Etc. etc. It would help me in making an informed decision on which school to attend the coming year. Thanks!

Here is a match list from last year: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=10754583&postcount=208

Year to year differences would just be a reflection of the class, not the school. NYU also doesn't lean towards primary care, as evident by published stats (32% between 2009-2011, US News).

Where should I send a post-waitlist letter of interest to? Also, is NYU receptive to these?

So what would we call it if my parents are paying $0? And I'm paying $0. And I have 0 loans.
I don't want to say what mine is based off of for anonymity's sake, but it's neither merit, nor need.

Which is the better dorm to live in? Vilcek or Greenberg? What is the average monthly electricity/cable bill in Greenberg since it is not included? What are the advantages of each dorm? Thanks!

~$100 cable/internet + ~$60-100 electricity. This is usually split b/t the 3 roommates.
Greenberg is across the st. from the med center, so it's more convenient in that respect.
Vilcek has a gym in the basement and the lounge where we hold our pregames/get togethers.
Luckily you have minimal choice in the matter. It might be a matter of how quickly you get your housing apps in. I think they filled Vilcek up first.
You'll be fine wherever you end up.
