Accepted!!! I received an email today from Dr. Peterson, rather than a call, since I am out of the country. This is awesome! I am very grateful for this opportunity! Yes!!!! 🙂 Si se puede!!!!

Good luck to everyone still awaiting news! :luck:

Are IIs still going out? When is the interview season scheduled to conclude, anyone know?

Congrats to the recent acceptances! 🙂

As for interviews, they have them scheduled until April for now.

anyone who interviewed late november hear back yet about an admission decision?

haven't heard back yet. I interviewed Dec 12. I think you might be next

I'm kind of curious why UCI is the only school I know of with the ultrasound emphasis. It seems cool but you'd think other schools would catch on then. Anybody know?

the faculty and students I talked to said that UCI's best specialty is ob gyn. It makes sense that their ultrasound technology is top notch

We just happen to have a lot of faculty with a huge interest in Ultrasound. It will spread across other schools eventually. We have Dr. Fox (EM) and Dr. Turner (Intensive Care Medicine) who are both subspecialized in ultrasound and most of their research is in ultrasound - fortunately for the medical students their interest in ultrasound has expanded to include all the medical students and it was Dr. Fox who started the integrated course for Ms1-MS3s.

Invites are still going out. The last interview day is scheduled for April 2.

Patiently waiting....
Initial Review complete.....
waiting on an interview decision....
give me some love UCI <3

Anybody that interviewed 11/29 hear back yet? Starting to get a bit nervous

Just a big FYI for prospective students, because you will not have heard about a major change in policy that current students were only JUST informed about -- but there will be REQUIRED physical attendance in at least 80% of all lectures throughout the first and second years. How this will be enforced has not yet been determined. But this policy will likely become implemented at the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

I should clarify: there is actually a law that requires attendance in 80% of class in order to obtain a medical license in California. But pretty much all schools don't actively enforce this law. UCI has decided to start enforcing it. So just something to keep in mind as you all are going through the application process and trying to make up your minds about what school to attend.

They are starting to enforce this law because this December the California med schools were informed that an averaged attendance of 80% through all 4 years for a student is not sufficient.. a med student needs 80% attendance in each year to obtain a license in California. (because third and fourth years have so many hours, hitting the average was assumed as third and fourth years are obviously 100% attendance).. The deans are conference calling the other California med deans this week to see how they are handling the situation.

Someone correct me if the meeting tonight changed any of that.

I don't believe that all CA medical schools were informed that an averaged attendance of 80% was insufficient. Rather, in December, certain events transpired with a few professors at UCI that prompted the administration to re-evaluate their stance on requiring attendance. In the past, the law may have been loosely interpreted by medical schools to mean an averaged 80% attendance across all 4 years. UCI admin thus contacted the medical board and consulted attorneys who further clarified the law to mean 80% of attendance in first and second years and not just averaged over all 4 years.

Does anybody know when the next committee meeting will be?

From what I've seen, meetings usually take place the day after an interview day.. I'm guessing they review the applicants that DIDN'T interview that day since the student interview report isn't due for a couple days after meeting the applicant. If the committee accepts you, the decision has to be approved by one of the senior adcoms (that final decision might take some time, im guessing not the same day as when the committee meets), and THEN you have to wait for Dr. Peterson to have time to call you.

Long process!

Next interview day is Jan 23 I think, so I'm guessing the next meeting will be around then also.

..And too bad UCI took the initiative to clarify that law.. but attending class, in general, I think is a good idea no matter what your learning style/speed is. I'll try to update SDN when the administration gives us a clear picture of what will be required/how students will fulfill the 80% mark.

Hopefully this cancer doesn't spread to other UC medical schools

There's a committee meeting going on right now, so hopefully some decisions will role out for you SDNers soon!!

P.s. Everyone looks very engaged in their conversations, you all must have interesting apps!:luck:

Oh man...good luck to us all...hoping for an II from UCI :luck::luck::luck::luck:

So alternate list it is. Does anyone know if this is an outright rejection or simply wait list?

When do they move their waitlist, again? I interviewed in September and cannot for the life of me remember - is it the end of June?

Please Irvine say something to me!!! Please an Interview Invite would be the best thing ever!

COMPLETE since 10/26

Has anyone else who interviewed 11/29 or later heard back from UCI? I have no status change yet, and I'm anxiously awaiting a decision 🙂 thanks!

that is completely dependent on the person. Whether its UCI's decision or some CA law that requires class attendance, ist pretty BS. You shouldnt be able to impose any one learning style on students. Listening to lecture is exactly that, a learning style and preference that should be decided by the individual. I didn't go to any lecture at all because I simply didn't learn from them. They were a waste of time, not to mention that most of them were pretty terrible to begin with. So I studied on my own, and it worked well. If they had had mandatory attendance for my class I would have just sat in the back with noise cancelling headphones and read whatever I felt I needed to study. On the flip side some of my best friends went to every lecture b/c that is how they learned the material the best! Neither my way or my friends way are THE way to do it, but they worked for both of us. Forcing everyone to attend lecture is just going to cause more problems and student unhappiness.

You never hear of someone being forced to study from a certain textbook/review book, or to use a certain method such as writing notes or using flashcards or highlighting with multiple colors. Going to lecture is just another option in the methods you have to study. Its absolutely backwards to force people to do this.

I don't think its a coincidence that this change happens shortly after my year enters the hopsital - we have been battling with the admin about student attendance for two years. Their main argument was that it is 'unprofessional' to not attend lecture and that we somehow owe it to the people who are lecturing to be there??? Multiple times they emailed and attempted to guilt trip us in this way to go to lecture. Instead, what should be done is improving the quality of the lectures. There are three types of students - those who will never attend lecture regardless of quality (maybe 5%), those who will always attend lecture regardless of quality(maybe 5%), and everyone in between who will go to lecture if they think it will be worth while and the lecturer is of good quality. Our anatomy course was by far considered the best taught and run course during the first year. There was NEVER an attendance problem with that course. The lecture hall was packed everyday. Its because that type of student who attends lecture based on quality showed up in masses. Now, compare anatomy to a course like pharmacology (which was teeeeeeeerrrible during my year) and there were like 10 students that would go to lecture (I think there was one lecture were there were only 3 or 4 people). If you improve the quality of the lectures, more people will come. Its not rocket science.

It also sounds like the other UC med schools are interested in enforcing the mandatory attendance law, when I asked one of the deans.

I also think the mandatory attendance policy is silly. They kept making BS arguments about how we're going to make horrible doctors with no bedside manner if we don't come to lecture 🙄.

yea, its a joke. Just grit your teeth, do your time, and never look back. youll be so happy to be done with first two years that while you will feel bad about the incoming classes who will suffer from the new changes (whatever they may be), you won't have the energy to do anything about it b/c you know its fruitless and you have a whole new set of issues to deal with during 3rd and 4th year!

I also interviewed on Nov 29th but havent heard back yet
