So nothing?

I said "dream school" because I'm from Los Angeles and would really love to be able to stay in the area I grew up near my family and everyone I've known for a lot of my life. I went to undergrad OOS and while I had a great time, I really missed L.A. and never went more than a few months without coming home for at least a weekend. Sure, everyone will say why they hate L.A. or CA, but when you grow up here, it's hard to leave it for a long time. 🙂
It's also a really great school, but mostly that first sentence.

That being said, I know how tough it is to get into this school and am not banking on getting in, although one can hope. If not, residency in L.A.? :xf:

Does anyone know how family-friendly UCLA is? I've heard that people comment that their school is family-friendly, so I was wondering if anyone has an opinion either way about UCLA. Also, are there housing options for a 2-bedroom apartment in decent neighborhoods that are near campus?

Can't comment on UCLA's family-friendliness, but there are definitely a lot of 2-bd apartments available near campus! Housing is guaranteed for incoming medical students, and most of us end up living at Weyburn Terrace, which is just off the southeast side of campus. There are also townhouses here if you prefer a little more privacy with the fam 🙂 Here's a link if anyone wants to read more about the housing sitch in detail: http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1002103

I'll help out keeping UCLA on page 1.

Also, I figured it can't hurt to start a discussion. Does anyone know how family-friendly UCLA is? I don't have that much exp with this, but I'd say UCLA is pretty family-friendly. I've seen plenty of emails go out re: events for students and their significant others.

Regarding housing, Weyburn is great, but there's also married student grad housing not too far from campus (though not walking distance either). There's a shuttle that runs from there to campus ...and seems to work out quite well for most. From convo's with friends, it's pretty affordable as well.

Anyone know what UCLA generally screens for IS? Only secondary I didn't receive first time I applied (re-app), but really hoping to get the secondary this time around!

I can't tell you exactly what they were thinking, but I am also a re-app and my GPA was a little higher than yours and my MCAT was low 30s and I received a secondary last year. It might have been the combination of a 3.55 cGPA and a 28 mcat that got you screened out. With your 37 MCAT, there is no way you not getting one this year! So... think happy thoughts!

:luck:

I know that it is too early in the cycle for some of you to get excited about UCLA but I can not let UCLA fall off the first page on SDN.🙂

Just to keep UCLA on first page.🙂
Trying to keep UCLA on first pag🙂e.

Sad part = bumping UCLA thread != getting into UCLA

Where is the love for UCLA? Am I the only one on SDN?🙂

Your repeated posts are spam and do nothing for the school or the applicants.

Please stop bumping this thread unless you have something to contribute.

:eyebrow:

To seriously answer the question, if this year is similar to last year, UCLA operates extremely late relative to other schools in their application timeline. First interviews ~last week of November... First acceptances in March. The wait can be difficult, but hopefully it helps knowing everybody else is in the same situation. :luck:

jeez why so late...all i want before the world comes to an end in 2012 is be accept to UCLA Med school is that too much to ask for? 😛

At least this past cycle, UCLA was dealing with last-minute changes to the application process (changing interview format to MMI), so even though they had been ready to carry on with the traditional system in September, the change in plans pushed the beginning of interviews to November. Perhaps now that they've gone through a year of MMI and seen what works, things will move a little faster in the future 🙂 UCLA also receives an ENORMOUS number of applications, so frankly I'm not too surprised that they do take a little longer to process than some other schools.

Btw, given that it would be the end of the world, I could probably think of other more gratifying things to ask for besides a med school acceptance, as much as UCLA med rocks 😉

Beautiful campus, excellent research opportunities, world-class hospital right on campus, great weather, close to my family, in-state tuition, excellent sports tradition.

I don't think that I consider it my dream school, though. You also have to deal with very expensive housing, traffic, LA, and Dodger fans.

 Dodger fans can't really do much for awhile after this season heh. I don't think they'll be a problem. I live in LA and I'm a Dodger fan, so I'm slightly biased, but there's a good amount of Giants, Padres, and Yankees fan around imo. Or maybe its the people I hang out with

Go Rockies!

Also, any clue when we'll hear from UCLA?

From last year's thread, secondary essay came out on July 14. If this timeline hold then we will hear some thing next week.:xf:

lol, UCLA is one of my top choices. A lot of opportunities here I can take advantage of 🙂

Just a heads up- on the application status check website, there is now an option to choose the 2012 cycle which means the secondary should be on its way any day now! :luck:

Thanks for the heads up-- too bad there's still no update!

I'm hoping they release the secondary sometime this week 🙂

Just received this email from UCLA

"We have been notified by the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) that you have designated the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as one of your choice schools.

Our Admissions Committee will be conducting the preliminary review of all our applicants through the month of January. Any additional information such as supplemental information, transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. will be requested after initial review. David Geffen School of Medicine will only accept letters of recommendation via AMCAS.

Please be assured that all precautions have been taken to give your credentials a fair and complete evaluation.

You may check the status of your application via the 2012 Application Status web site. This site is updated weekly. The link for the status web site is located at the following location: http://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/prospective. You will need your AMCAS identification number, birth date, and the last four digits of your Social Security number in order to access the status page.

Please do not forward additional material until instructed by the Admissions Committee.

Thank you for your interest in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA."

got same email as above, but no secondary yet... :xf:

I got the same e-mail. I guess January is a type.
And when I checked the application status website, I did not see any information listed.

Got the receipt email, but that's it.

Does anyone know what UCLAs secondary cut is? Is it as harsh as UCSFs?

so according to their timeline, secondaries are not requested before august..?

I hope this is the case, because I want to turn UCLA around quickly though I'm too behind on other schools.

I swear, the moment I submit a secondary and let that cathartic feeling course through my veins, I get hit by another.

Felt good to at least get that email today after getting rejected at Mayo the same day.

Got the receipt email, but that's it.

Last time I applied I got the UCSF secondary, but not the UCLA secondary. So I'm guessing the cut isn't any lower at UCLA. Who knows though, they could just be looking for completely different things! I hope I've done enough to get the secondary this time!

The MSTP secondary is available as of today. I don't know whether the MD only is also available, or whether it is the same one as MD/PhD. None of the questions on MSTP seem very research-specific.

I went on to check the status of my application today, and I saw that they had downloaded my letters or rec. Is this a good sign? I need this after getting rejected from UC Davis pre-secondary already. :xf:

I just checked, and they've also downloaded my letters.

I hope this question wasn't already discussed but how does UCLA narrow down the applicants for interviews if they invite 1/3 of the applicants for secondaries? I'm assuming that academic/extracurricular wise, all these applicants made some cut-off, so is it all based on the secondary essays?

Can anyone tell me the letters of recommendation relinquishment for ucla? Do they have the typical two sciences, one non-science professor and then who ever else you want?

Can someone tell me the requirements for the UCLA-David Geffen letters of recommendation? I can't seem to find it on their website. Thanks!

Has anyone contacted them about their year of math requirement? I got 5's on my AP exams for statistics and Calc B/C so I only had to take one quarter of Calc in college which involved differential equations and linear algebra. Seems kinda insane to think I'll have to take two more quarters before I matriculate and end up taking vector calculus. I haven't taken a math course since 2004!

You probably just need a quarter of statistics.

I'm taking stats this summer 😴

From what I remember, they ask for 3-5 LORs, and two of them should be from science profs.

Tauparticle, I'd call the admissions office and ask about the math requirement. Some, if not most, med schools may not take AP credit, but perhaps UCLA can make an exception since you went through diff eq successfully. 😛
