For all of you who are worried about your interview scheduling, don't read this story.

Really.

I got an email from UCLA on Wednesday, at 2:15pm. I happened to be on the computer doing some homework, so I replied with my preferred dates immediately. Less than 30 seconds after hitting the 'send' button my phone rings.

Me "Hello?"
Caller "Hi, is this monkeymind90 (not my real name)?"
Me "Yes, who is this?"
Caller "I'm calling from the David Geffen School of Medicine. I saw on your interview response that you would prefer a Friday, Thursday, or Wednesday. We have a cancellation next Monday. Can you make it?"

Middlin-ish story short, I rescheduled a class, cancelled a train ticket, and got a quiz moved to go to an interview 5 days after the initial notification.

Would love to have this problem.

Anyone have the interviewed/accepted numbers for UCLA?

The number enrolled here corresponds to only the regular MD program (121). The class size is actually 161 + 20 or so UCR/UCLA students. The additional 40 students above the 121 are a part of the MSTP, Prime, and Drew Programs.

Good to know, thanks. I was wondering about the discrepancy between the MSAR numbers and those.

The MSAR does list the same number of interviewees though, so those numbers may not be too helpful.

Jesus H. why so many essays? This makes duke look like child's play.

I received a secondary within a few hours of my AMCAS being received, is this significant? I only ask because it seems people are getting screened.

I'm OOS, 34Q, 3.91, but I started my own company. Maybe they liked that?

How many people actually complete this secondary? Do I have a shot?

Wow! Establishing a company is a great feat. I say go for it!

Does anyone know if UCLA is receptive to in-area emails? I'm from the east-coast, and flying out to Cali is expensive!

I sent one to them and they acknowledged that they had gotten the email a day later. Maybe 4-5 days after that, I was offered an interview. Go for it, it doesn't hurt!

Pretty much same thing for me. They'll definitely take a look at your file and accommodate you if they can, so it doesn't hurt. Good luck! :luck:

On another note, does anyone know how long the interview day at UCLA is? I'm probably commuting/carpooling to/from my interview in about a week, and "plan to be here the entire day" isn't exactly the most specific planning tool when dealing with LA traffic.

When are you scheduled to arrive at UCLA? If your arrival time is at 7:45 am, then your day will end with lunch and will be finished by 1:30 pm. This group has their interviews first thing in the morning. There was a second group that arrived a hour or so later and they have their interviews in the afternoon after lunch, I believe. In that case, you'll probably be done by 4 or 5. Someone who was in an afternoon group can confirm or correct my statements. 😀

Thanks, yes, I'm in the morning group, so this is very helpful to know. 👍

I though UCLA interviews into April, but I guess not?

"The Admissions Committee will be evaluating completed applications during the months of October through January. Interviews will be conducted between October and January. "

😕

I got an invite a little more than a week ago, after sending an in-area interview. My interview was scheduled for early November.

Last year, UCLA interviewed into April because it was the first year that they implemented the MMI-system. It was pretty hectic and because of it, they had interviews later into the season and accepted students late as well. Now that they have fixed their issues, the process is much more streamlined and smoother for applicants. Also, the Dean stated that interviews might go into February because they were a little bit behind schedule.

Just got an invite earlier today. Complete 8/29.

Complete Mid August, still no word.

Hmm...my status page says there is no record found with my information (which is correct). Rejection? or Glitch? PLEASE be the latter. #1 top choice.

update: back up! andddd panic attack/hot flashes over. back to updating my email every 3 minutes waiting for an interview.

My interview has been scheduled for mid November (I got my invite this week) so it looks like they still have a good number of spots open for this year, unless I was scheduled based on a cancellation (three weeks notice isn't all that much, after all).

For those of you that sent in-area e-mails. What e-mail address did you send it to?

I'm from the Bay Area, and I'm going to be in Socal for an interview at Irvine at the end of November. I work full-time and it's really tough to take time off for interviews. Would it be weird for me to send an in-the-area e-mail, seeing how I'm from CA to begin with?

I had kinda the same dilemma.

Hmm. . . out of state residency, but I go to school in SoCal. Also complete since mid-August. Is it even necessary to send an in-the-area email?

Got scheduled for early November! Ughhh so soon!

I hope I'm not being overly neurotic, but I just went to the status website and it pulls up the following message:

"No Matching records found or incomplete data field! Check back later."

For several months now it just showed the dates for receipt of my secondary and my letters of recommendation. Does the message just mean the status site isn't working, or did something actually happen with my file? Anyone else having the same problem?

I have the same message. I think it's just a technical glitch though...the website seems to have a few of those (or so I've read).

I had kinda the same dilemma, I'm from Los Angeles but go to school on the East Coast. I did end up sending an in the area email though. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what weeks UCLA does not interview (for winter break?)

Winter break is December 15th to January 2nd, but everyone has finals that last week so that may affect interviews too... Unless the admissions office is okay with having really exhausted student tourguides.

Can any of you California natives help me out? I have UCLA interviews 12/1-2, and then I need to be in Palo Alto 12/6-7. What is the best way to get from one to the other? What airports do you recommend I take to get to UCLA? (OOS obviously)

Not an expert in NorCal transportation, but I think you probably have to fly in to San Jose. Flying takes about an hour, driving is about 5-6.

UCLA: Fly into LAX the day before. You don't want to mess with West LA traffic on the day of your interview. This is expensive, but I would try and get a hotel in Century City--it's relatively close to UCLA. Or you can stay with a student/friend in the area.

Congrats on your interviews!

Fly into LAX. Stay at the airport for cheap (Use priceline.com to bid. Should be less than 75.00/night). Use Flyaway shuttle to get to Westwood. Here is the link.

Go back to lax using the same mode of transportation.

Fly Southwest to San Jose. Take a shuttle to Stanford U. (around 28.00/trip). Stay at Stanford guest house. Here is the link

Use the free shuttle to get to the Med school.

Good luck🙂

I agree with the UCLA part, but if you arrive during traffic hours at the airport I would recommend flying into SFO rather than San Jose. I am an SJ native and you'll have to take a shuttle or a bus to Caltrain to get to Stanford from SJC, but the traffic can be RIDICULOUS. If you fly into SFO you can take the subway (BART) to Caltrain and I think it'll make you rest easier because those modes are much more reliable. Congrats on your invites!

For Norcal:
No question about it - fly in to SFO
Take a SuperShuttle from the airport to Palo Alto

Socal: LAX

I'm getting frustrated with UCLA. I recieved an email acknowledging receipt of my primary in July and have literally had no communication since. I emailed over a week ago and haven't recieved a reply. I called and all I was able to get was an unfriendly "it takes awhile for us" from someone in the office. I feel like it is ridiculous to have not even received a secondary when I have already received 6 interview invites and an acceptance elsewhere. UCLA is a school I'd really like a chance at! Has anyone in a similar situation had better luck with communications?

There are a few current med students on this thread who have offered to answer our Q's, so I think I'll put them to task 🙂

1. Is the curriculum systems-based? Also, is there anything else a prospective student should take note of? They seem to be getting into the small group/PBL stuff.

2. How easy is it to get into research? For some schools you're basically on your own, whereas other schools have programs that connect you with faculty who have already outlined projects for med students to take on.

I couldn't find the answers to these Q's on the DGSOM website, so I'd greatly appreciate it if some current students could weigh in. Thanks.

1. Yes and it rocks... all my friends at other schools taking biochem are totally miserable right now. The one drawback is anatomy takes all year, but we only go into the lab every couple weeks. We have PBL only 2 days a week, which is a nice change to a regular lecture curriculum, but not so much that it wastes time (too much PBL is definitely a bad thing).

2. Research is so easy to get involved with, it's almost unfair. We have someone on the student affairs staff whose only job is to match students up with research advisors.

What dbeast said.

PBL really is a great idea, even if we all grumble when it comes time to turn in our learning issues (I'm working on mine now...). It helps connect the main points/themes you learn throughout the week. In general, UCLA is great at doing that. All of your labs, histology lectures, doctoring/clinical skills sessions really tie into lectures for the week, and the repetition and different angles on material almost force you to learn it.

Like the medical student said above, research is pretty easy to find. Many of our lecturers are doctors and have some of their own programs going on, so it's easy to talk to them about opportunities. Also, if you're not THAT interested in bench-work in a boring lab performing gels day after day after day (I'm not) and want to get out of the U.S. for a few months over the summer (like I do), UCLA is expanding its Global Health program as we speak. We have affiliations with multiple research programs in countries like Ghana, South Africa, and Peru, among many others. So join the Global Health group next year!

Fun times with learning issues... I am the multitasking king and will still be going to the beach in the morning as scheduled. 😎

For those who have interviewed.

I know that you can not talk about specific things about the MMIs. However, as far as I know, you have a two minute stop where you read a prompt, then go into a room to discuss the prompt. My question to all of you who can comment, Do the interviewers give you any hints or can clarify doubts about the prompt in case you do not know the person or event they are talking about? or Are they pretty strict and tell you that they can not help you at all?

I am interviewing there next week and just want to know that! Thank you.
