UCSF have no undergraduate school.

Regents scholarships are given throughout the UC system as well, including schools with undergrads. Though I remember specifically hearing they are also available to med students (could be wrong since now that I think about it I read about them on SDN).

I can confirm Regents scholarships for undergraduate school ($4,500.00 per year for 4 year renewable every year ). I have not heard Regents scholarship for Graduate school. The amount can be different from school to school. The amount above is for UCLA.

Anyone know how many applicants are on the alternate list this year? I'm curious to know if the number of students on the alternate list is substantially different now that we know there's no HPL this year.

I believe someone earlier said there could be as many as 100 this year, but can anyone confirm that?

I called and was told there is no high priority waitlist this year. The number that get off the waitlist varies from year to year, last year nearly 50 were taken off the waitlist, I heard. There could be as many as a 100 on the waitlist this year. So as we have no idea where we stand, I guess it is a waiting game.

I also went back and checked the 2009 thread and looked like there were 60 or 80 waitlisted. I guess that year 30 to 40 people got off the waitlist.

I wonder what the source of these numbers is: a website, admissions office statement, or through SDN comments. I counted the responses in the 2009-2010 thread and 2010-2011 threads, and found much lower numbers of people that got off the waitlist.

I (sadly) agree, I was surprised/doubtful about those numbers. Sometimes i think we're playing a big game of telephone. Maybe Spring37 will come back with the details? If someone else gets up the guts to call for specifics, let us know!

Also just got the alternate list update, interviewed 02/06. Am bummed, UCSF was one of my favorite interviews 🙁

This is basically a waitlist, right?

Alternate list as well, interviewed 1/24. I am super-bummed, UCSF was by far my top choice.

Is UCSF like Northwestern in that pretty much everyone who doesn't get in is thrown on a waitlist with very few outright rejections handed out? Is there actually a shot in hell of getting off the alternate list once you're on it?

There were post-interview rejections earlier in the season I believe.

In past months groups (including mine) many were rejected post interview. I had a friend who was rejected, and I know a big cycle of rejections went out just before I got accepted. Hopefully the wait list will move, crossing my fingers for you.

The person at the admissions office said no high priority waitlist this year, they look at their wailists after May 15th and expect roughly to have close to 100 on the waitlist.

The numbers getting off the waitlist in past years, I got from SDN.

Waiting (im)patiently for May 15th.

Thank you! That's reassuring to know. I've already gotten in elsewhere, but I really did love SF, so it would be nice to have the option in May 🙂

I'm disappointed, but understanding, that they aren't able to make decisions about alternate list before second look weekend. For me the second look would've have been important :/ oh well, until may

Also wait listed on monday. Although it sounds like we have at least a 30% shot. A few questions in my head:

Did anyone get accepted/rejected with the most recent batch?

Is your spot on the wait list set in stone once you're on the wait list?

When I interviewed, one of my interviewers said letters of intent do nothing. Anyone else here differently?

Just my opinion, but I'd put the shot closer to ~10%, based on the responses I've been seeing in the last couple of years. Keep in mind this year there is no HPL, which means less people are getting pulled off a list from Feb-May.

I also heard letters of intent do nothing.

A friend of mine from last season wrote a letter of intent while waitlisted and he ended up matriculating off of the waitlist. That doesn't mean it was because of the letter, but it seems that it doesn't hurt. I also wrote a letter of intent before I was accepted a few months back but post interview for what it's worth--again that's not to say that my letter got me in, but it obviously didn't hurt.

Rejected post-interview after waiting since early January...totally bummed. Good luck to everybody on the waitlist!

Interviewed mid-feb. Anyone know when I can expect to hear back?

Same boat, HighHope - interviewed on February 13th and haven't heard back, they told me late march. Fingers crossed!

Just got accepted by e-mail at 4:22 PST. Interviewed 2/4. Hope good news is on its way for those who are still waiting!

Just received the acceptance email today, sooooo excited. UCSF is def my top choice on the west coast. Btw, I interviewed on 1/24.

Good luck to all those still waiting to hear back.

Has anyone out there gotten info about the second look weekend? I know we got our schedule, but what about hosts? Is there a FB page?

There is a host sign up sheet I think, contact Matt abad-santos on Facebook He hosts so Im sure He will have some good info for you. There also is a group for accepted students on facebook which He can also invite you into. Dsing lazers on Facebook is also a good contact for info.

Just popping in to say hi to the UCSF thread 🙂 Congrats to those who have been accepted, and fingers crossed for those on the waitlist!

Hi All!! Just curious, has anyone gotten in (or heard of anyone who has gotten in) off of the alternate list in this cycle? Thanks!

Any of you fine gals or guys know when financial aid awards will be going out? Thanks!

I was told they'd go out at second look weekend. Does anyone know the best-case scenario for financial aid awards (including any merit aid)? One financial aid officer told me that a $10k grant is the best case, but another told me that some students are offered tens of thousands in grants.

i just received an email with a link to access financial aid offer. i am quite disappointed in my offer, but hope that others will receive something closer to their expectations.

Also got an offer... compared to other schools, it sucked. Hope I can use my other fin aid offers as leverage.

They explicitly say they don't negotiate, but you have nothing to lose by trying.

Mine sucked too, going to withdraw. Good luck everyone!

Where do they say they don't negotiate? I was really hoping they would 🙁

A $10K grant is 10 of a thousand.

From the email they sent out telling us aid decisions were available online.

"Please note that UCSF does not negotiate university grant and scholarship award amounts. These awards are need-based and your eligibility has been determined based upon need analysis standards established by the U.S. Department of Education and UCSF awarding policies. We will, of course, make adjustments to reflect changes in yours or your family’s financial circumstances."

A single grant of tens of thousands is more than a $10K grant. I've heard conflicting reports about the upper limit of individual grants, and I thought that info would be useful to the group following this thread.

I wonder why you felt the desire to be so rude? It's a rhetorical question, but seriously, think about where that impulse is coming from.

Thanks. Once I saw that the award wasn't disclosed in the email I was all "screw this!" and went straight to the MyAccess portal 🙂

For those who went to second look weekend, how was it? What did you guys do, how were the students and their involvement, how much effort did the administration put into organizing the event? Would love to hear about your experiences.

From previous threads, most letters are sent out after May 21st-the first week of June.

I wish the cycle ended earlier. Waitlists make planning very difficult!

I agree. I myself am moving from abroad to the U.S. and it makes it quite difficult for purchasing airplane tickets since most medical schools have different starting dates. I am hoping for the best here and who knows, we might hear back from them later on the month or so.

Hey everyone! I thought I would share some information that I counted from past threads. I counted the number of people who said they were on the HPL or alternate last in the past 3 years and how many of them got in. I also counted how many people said they were outright accepted. When I counted, I tried to make sure that I didn't double count any SDN users to make sure it was as accurate as possible.

Before I give you the information, I want to explain some of my process to reduce confusion. In past years there has been a HPL. From the HPL, you were either moved to the alternate list, rejected, or accepted. If someone said they were on the HPL, I counted them. If that person was moved to the alternate list, I did not count them a second time. If a person got accepted directly from HPL, I counted them as someone who got accepted off the HPL/Alternate list. If a person got rejected without being moved to the alternate list, I did not remove them from the HPL/alternate list. Hope that makes sense. Here you go:

2011-2012
22 SDN users have said they are on the alternate list; 0 have said they have been accepted (16 users have said they were outright accepted)

2010-2011
23 SDN users said they were put on the HPL/alternate list; 7 said they were eventually accepted (16 users said they were outright accepted)

2009-2010
40 SDN users said they were put on the HPL/alternate list; 12 said they were eventually accepted (24 users said they were outright accepted)

2008-2009
20 SDN users said they were put on the HPL/alternate list; 9 said they were eventually accepted (24 users said they were outright accepted)

I hope this gives people on the alternate list enough information to not have to look back at old threads trying to figure out what % got in of the AL in past years. Hang in there everyone!
