What is even more interesting to me is that people are all still interested in non-rolling schools. With a defined decision date, the wait is much easier, and you it really decreases stress. CU seems to have picked the worst of both worlds. They say they are rolling, but only admitted 6 SDNer's prior to their "big day" last week. Then they wait and just roll stuff out slowly over all of March, and into April (from last year's thread). I agree and I wonder how many applicants just aren't interested anymore b/c of this kind of stuff.

I don't know...much as I do NOT appreciate the combo rolling/non-rolling approach, I've tried to keep in mind that my medical school experience ultimately will have nothing to do with the admissions office/process. So choosing which medical school to attend really shouldn't have anything to do with when/how long it takes to get accepted. That being said, I am placing the schools that accepted me outright higher on my interest list than the ones that deferred/waitlisted me initially. I think that's more a sign of personal "fit" with the school though.

So yeah, the waiting game sucks, but I still <3 CU. 🙂

I think that's a good point. Admissions is not the medical school proper, and there's no necessity for one to impact the other. But I do think how they treat their potential matriculants is at the minimum telling of the administration's attitude, if not outright indicative of it.

To me, this says that the overall feeling here is that CUSOM's administration does not respect their students. I have to wholeheartedly disagree. I think both the CUSOM admissions dept and administration does show respect for their students. (Consider the purchase of exercise machines for the students while the student gym is being built, for instance.) At the same time, they had some 5500 applications this year and had never hit numbers like that before. They offered 200 more interviews than last year. While I want nothing more to hear back from them in the affirmative (and SOON), I have to respect Dr. Winn and Ms. Patel for the work they are doing. It's a small staff and an enormous number of applicants to sift through. However, if you really are off-put by CU and choose to go somewhere else as a result, I will gladly accept your seat in the class. 😉

I agree with this. Frustrating though it may be, I wouldn't be hasty to make assumptions as to what's going on there, nor would I try to extrapolate it to the school itself. An adcom would have to severely (and blatantly) jerk me around for me to base my school decision on that.

Just an FYI for everyone. The new health center (which is the gym on campus), costs $30 a month for students (same as 24 hour fitness). By signing up to use the facility you also allow them to study your gym habits for research purposes (I think it's mostly observational research.).

I don't know why this made me laugh. 👍

$30/month? Lame. I'm not thrilled about that.

Back to the previous topic, I've always thought that any inadequacies that one could find in CU's admission staff is simply b/c Colorado education funding is pretty poor (as most people can see by the OOS price tag). I think that this extends to the admissions office and they probably don't have the approved budget to pick up extra staff and are doing as well as they can with what they have. *shrug*

Disagree. I don't like their timeline for admissions. I have plenty of friends there who love the school and the people in admissions. I just don't like their timeline.

Agree.... the school and administration are awesome. All I am bitching about is the admissions timeline. Above, I even said that they just need to hire a couple more people for the admissions office. I am not hating on anyone in there. They are behind b/c of the number of applications, and I just think they would do the applicants and themselves a favor and switch to non-rolling, or go full on rolling and start rejecting way earlier. All of this said, no one in admissions has asked for my opinion. 🙄

Aren't they technically supposed to pay YOU if you're a participant in a research project?

Whoa, sorry, that was misinterpreted. I wasn't indicting CUSOM, I don't think they're being malicious at all. I was referring back to the the U of Washington thing - it shows they care a bit about all their applicants whether they will be enrolled or not. CU is clearly just just overwhelmed, not mean. Believe me, I got nothing but good vibes from that place.

Yeah, borders on some ethical issues I think. But I don't know enough about it to have a strong opinion. Some students on student government are pretty mad about it (as are a lot of students I know).

I certainly understand that concern, but take heart, you'll know your status by this time next week. You have Gandalf's word. Well, technically, you have my word, and I have Gandalf's word, but let's not get technical....

LOL. For those who get in...the admissions office is going to be quite confused by their new nicknames next year. Thoughts on naming Dimple, Ashley?

LOL... so true. Although I don't think we've given nicknames to any of the well-known admissions staff, have we? (Not that it matters since the Admissions staff totally read this thread. They're aware of the things said here.) BTW, to clarify, Gandalf is not anyone that has been mentioned by actual name on this board.

And I think I'll refrain from giving Dimple a nickname/code name. She's just an awesome person.

Is Gandalf prepared to let some of us pass next week, or are we all doomed to plunge down to the depths of Moria into a giant lake to be consumed by the Balrog?

Gandalf's word is as strong as mithril! We shall await the decision as the people of Rohan waited for Sauromon's army of Uruk-Hai at Helms Deep.

Balrog=day job?
Helms Deep=OB/GYN rotation?

If the admissions staff is aware of what's said on this board, maybe that's why they're "behind"?

All,
I hate to stray too far from the current topic, so fellow nerds please allow me to submit a serious question at this time.

Has anyone begun dealing with the financial aid office? Who is the best person to talk to if you are an MD student? I called this morning and was left with more questions than answers.

My impression from the interview day was once you were accepted they would start making an epic push to get award offers put together ASAP for an April delivery. The woman I spoke with today told me that it would probably be late May or early June before they started providing MD students with award offers.

Any thoughts on this are appreciated.

The membership director that I talked to said that the monthly fee will go up after March 31 (when the "Charter Membership" period ends), and after that time students may or may not have to pay at least a portion of the $150 initiation fee. Some classes will be free (spinning, pilates, yoga, etc), but other "specialty classes" will have a fee per class even with membership. It does look really nice, but I'm planning on waiting until after it opens to see if it's more crowded than 24 Hour Fitness (where I already paid membership initiation fees).

So, "there can be only one" medical school as of May 15th, but Colorado won't tell us how much it will cost until June 🙄 srsly???

anyone receive correspondence from CU lately? I'm getting really anxious to hear back :scared::scared:

Nada, I'm also getting very anxious. I have a feeling we will all hear something by the end of the week.

We will. It has been spoken.

J/k, but seriously. I have it from a very good source that we will hear back this Thursday at the latest, so either we all end the week very HAPPY, DEPRESSED, or EVEN MORE ANXIOUS! (I'm really hoping for the first one, I don't know about you....)

This almost makes me depressed...at least I have hope now. Aaah, stop thinking these negative thoughts! 🙁

Not sure why, but I've got a feeling that tomorrow might be "the day." :scared:

I've thought this every day since I interviewed in December.

Aw, I know. It has definitely been a long wait. Over 16 weeks for me. I'd LOVE to go, but at this point, I just want to know any answer. My hopes aren't too high for an acceptance.

I feel your pain, I interviewed in Sept.

SEPTEMBER?! Wow, now I don't feel so bad for myself!

This happened to a friend of mine. He was accepted in March the year that he applied (no WL or anything). I guess that can give us all a glimmer of hope!

Early October here. Almost six months ago.... :bang:

Yep, first interview day and not a peep. At least they didn't lose my application like Einstein. Or, I how they didn't.

Holy crap, Einstein lost your application? I'm so sorry. DDD:

Another first interview day person here. The fact that we're all in this together makes me feel a lot better. 🙂

You "first dayers" make me feel bad for even whining about November. Wow. Well hang in there. Hopefully there is good news for us by the end of the week.

Is there any other school that leaves applicants hanging for six months? Just curious

The only other schools that have left me hanging this long were non-rolling, said they were non-rolling, put out a date for decisions to go out, and stuck to it. Much more transparent and stress reducing than CU.
