this board has been quiet!!! i am praying that i made the secondary screen cut....applying late this year but this is my #1 choice!

When did you submit? I'm applying late, as well. My AMCAS was verified on 10/5 and I received the secondary on 10/12.

Aside: It seems that everyone who completes the secondary is invited to interview. Stumbled upon this on their website:
Does everyone receive a secondary application or supplemental materials?
No. Upon receipt of your verified AMCAS application, your application will go through a screening process. Applicants who make the secondary screening cut will proceed through the admissions process and requested to submit supplemental materials and invited for interviews. Please refer to this website to view the latest entering class profile of number of resident and nonresident applicants to JABSOM, number of applicants interviewed, and number of applicants accepted.

I'm glad there's more activity in this thread! 🙂

Not everyone who completes a secondary will be invited to an interview.
However, if you are an in-state resident-- basically you are guaranteed an interview (due to lower cut-offs).

They have a point-system (based on your application) that determines whether one will get an interview or not. A state resident requires less "points" to get an interview (which explains why a larger % get an invitation) whereas the out-of-state applicants have to get more "points" to get an interview (less % get an interview).

Here are the stats from last year's admission.
http://jabsom.hawaii.edu/JABSOM/admissions/procedures.php?l1=mdp&l2=proS

2011 APPLICANT POOL IN-STATE OUT-OF-STATE TOTAL
Number of Applicants 215 1,438 1,653
Applicants Interviewed 163 87 250
First-Year New Entrant 58 8 66

If you have any other concerns, feel free to ask (or pm me).
I am currently an MS1 at JABSOM.

Good luck during the application cycle! :luck:

I was verified on 10/12... so it's been exactly 1 week, and I haven't heard back. I don't think I made the 2ndary cut... I thought I'd try JABSOM this year though before retaking MCAT in the Spring again. I'm totally fine applying next year since that was the plan...just waiting and checking my email 🙁

Thanks HawaiiDoc..a lot of my friends are there. I'm pretty sure the IS people who apply and are requested 2ndary materials also get invited to an interview. They use the same point system for requesting a 2ndary as they do for interview invites. There are some OOS cases where they do request a 2ndary but not an interview invite.

You may yet hear back from UH. I emailed them early this morning to verify that they received my snail mail supplementary materials (as suggested in the secondary application) and they have yet to respond. It could just be that they are super busy today. Best of luck to you!

OK thank you for letting me know. I'll keep you posted. Oh, and it normally takes 3-5 business days between hawaii and mainland mail to arrive.

I just received an email asking me to verify my WICHE status. Does anyone know if this is just standard procedure or if this is a good sign?

I am not sure but it seems like a good sign! Did you already submit a secondary to them and what state are you in?

As an aside to those of you who have received interview invites, since they let you schedule them on your own, do they provide a range of dates or is it basically as soon as you can get down to Hawaii? Just curious because I'll already be down there for a short period of time in a couple of months. :xf:

I grew up in Hawai'i, but went to college in Montana. So I am now a Montana resident. Hoping that I will get some points for being from Hawai'i...after all that is where I want to practice anyway.

Did you go to highschool there and do your parents live there as well? If so, you would be considered a resident for their application purposes, and if you're WICHE, you'd be paying a lower tuition rate too.

Just received my Packet 2 and my first II! I think I'm going to fly down around 12/16, the same time as the PBL demonstration.

Secondary submitted: 10/16
II: 10/28

Yeah I graduated high school there. Parents no longer live there. Just got my interview invite though! My first interview and for my #1 choice! Pretty excited!

For anyone who wants to know if they are considered residents, I called the admissions office to see (since I met only 2/3 criteria). It helps to know where you stand before going into the interviews, since they mostly accept residents and only a handful of non-residents.

Nice! I'm already flying down in Dec. for Christmas break and hoping to schedule interviews around that time! THey let you choose the dates right? Or did they specifically ask you to interview in December?

They give you the contact information for the three interviewers and leave it up to you to schedule the interviews. That said, they are very adamant about the fact that the three interviews may not fit into any prearranged travel plans. My interviewers have been really flexible, however, and I think I will be able to take care of all three when I go down for the PBL demonstration. I may try to stick around until January 3rd and catch one of the student tours, which unfortunately stop for the holidays on the day of my last final. Best of luck, cinamin!

I interview soon at JABSOM, and I am so excited. However, looking at last year's admission statistics, the odds are not in my favor since I'm OOS

Hello everybody.... Im an OOS applicant who interviewed a couple months ago. I know they "strongly recommend" that you attend the PBL session, however I can no longer make another trip out there due to financial and personal reasons. Does anybody know if it is weighed negatively on your application? I would really like to know because hawaii is my number 1 choice

I am wondering the same as I'm in a similar situation. My interview is coming up and I'm wondering - did they ask you if you attended or will be attending the PBL orientation? If so, my hunch is that it is weighted somewhat heavily and/or makes you stand out as a more serious applicant.

I doubt it factors into anything. They just want to know that you understand what PBL is. The director of admissions went through how the process works and he never mentioned it. Your file is assigned to an adcom member who reviews everything and submits a detailed report to the committee and then each member ranks you from 1-10. I highly doubt they factor in PBL attendance and if you already attended the interview, they may have already met to discuss your file. You could write them an email explaining your circumstances if you want but I don't think it is necessary.

My GPA is on the lower end so I am hoping the interviews weigh heavily. The first interviewer said he felt really good about my chances!

accepted via email. IS, interviewed early October

good luck to everyone! 👍

Anyone else from SDN attending the PBL demonstration today? I'm very excited to get my first exposure to the Kakaako campus!

Yep, just got the email yesterday. I interviewed on Dec. 19th, 20th, and 21st. At my interview with Dr. Izutsu, he said interviewers have 10 days to submit their evaluations. Did you happen to interview with Dr. Mitsuaki Suzuki?

First post on SDN, just interviewed oos at UHI last weekend. looking at last year stats 6 acc/24 off, anyone know second hand how long it takes to get through all those offers?

From what I understood from my interview with Dr. Suzuki is that the majority of all the offers are made at the end of the cycle. As we've seen in this thread, highly qualified applicants may be offered before April.

However, the majority of us have to wait until April 1. The adcom will review your file and the ten members will rank your application on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest). The ballots are then sent to the registrar. At the end of the cycle, the votes for each applicant are averaged, and a list is made, ranking all the applicants. I would guess the top 50 or so offered acceptances (accounting for those who were offered during the cycle) to fill out a class of 66. Dr. Suzuki told me that the wait list is about 40 people deep and that there usually is significant movement.

I didn't know that they offered to 24 OOS applicants last year. You always see that 8 enrolled statistic, so this gives me a bit more hope!

Im pulling info from US News Best Graduate Schools Report.
For last year, 78 In-state hawaiians from 172 interviews, are offered acceptance filling 58 spots.
And for out of staters, it was 24 acceptance offers from 79 interviews for 6 spots (though i'm seeing others say it was 8). (it's because oos students who have UHI offers, usually are getting cheaper offers elsewhere as well, so about 4 offers go out for each oos student who actually matriculates.) Thus, im conjecturing that, if they offer maybe 8 at a time?, the full out of state roster may not be known until right when classes start.

Hey tmac514, going back to your original post, I went back and looked at last year's thread and some people were getting accepted all the way into June. Thanks for digging up those stats. They are encouraging!

Good to know, thanks for digging that up too. It would be intense to be called up to ship off to hawaii just a couple weeks before class starts. Most definitely, I'm holding onto the same stats for that candle flame of hope.

Anybody know when we are expected to hear back this year?

During my interview Dr. Izutsu said first week of April, but interviews finished on Feb 29th, and last year's class was notified via email on Mar 16th or so.

This has got to be the only school left that hasn't given out decisions?? 🙄

at least they go out by email.... right...?

Just emailed the registrar and she said that they anticipate to email out decisions by the end of next week. Good luck everyone! 🙂

Waitlisted as well. Still holding on to hope as a lot of OOSers typically decline. JABSOM is my dream school!

did it come by email!? I havn't gotten anything! ahhhhh

Rejected, dang, I was hoping for this one, super awesome school, so good luck to all you waitlisted!

OMG my friend just got the email, but the decision is in an attachment and she can't open it on her phone so she has to finish her work shift, go home, and then find out what it is.

Did everyone that got waitlisted and are OOS have some sort of ties to the island?
