did anyone else get an email from here inviting to apply based on their mcat score?

i got a 33 but im not considering here nor do i plan on blowing an extra $100 or so to get rejected lol. this is like the 3rd email ive gotten from a school that just seems like a generic email inviting me to apply because i recently took the mcat

I got said email too, and my MCAT score is below the school's average. I think it has to do with meeting their diversity quota and not your MCAT score:

Part of email said:
Michigan has a long history of valuing diversity in medical education. Our percentage of admitted under-represented students in medicine typically ranges from 10 to 20% in every class. We believe that a diverse class results in a stronger learning environment and trains students to be better doctors for the diverse patient populations they’ll serve.

I don't think I am losing too much by sending them my primary. Does anyone know if they waive their secondary fee? I was approved for FAP assistance, but I understand fee waiver rules differ from school to school.

Yes, they waive the secondary fee if you got the FAP.

I got your point. You just came off as being harsh, IMO.

Ya, I see what you mean. I didn't mean to! I need to throw some more emoticons in to show emotion 😀

Your intuition is correct. If you breathe oxygen and took the MCAT, you got an email. HOWEVER, you should in no way be deterred from applying here because you got a 33 (I'm assuming you're concerned about it since you mentioned it). My friend, you're in good shape with that score, and if you think you can bring something to the table and you think this school is a good fit for you, apply!

Has anyone here received an non-auto invite yet? Thanks!

Edit: Who is also OOS?

hmm maybe ill consider applying here then. does anyone know if there is anywhere on the secondary to say if you have any ties to michigan or u of m because im oos (actually a buckeye😀) but if it helps my application any i have pretty significant ties to here so maybe sending an email after secondary would be better?

Hypothetically speaking, if one is to get a non-auto interview around this time, then how much better does that make his/her chances of getting an acceptance compared to getting an interview offer later on?

The only thing on the secondary where you can indicate ties is checking a box if either of your parents received an MD from Michigan. However, I don't think having such ties to the school would significantly up your chances for an interview/admission.

Michigan has made it known that they're pretty aggressive with the rolling admissions. That being the case, the earlier your interview, the better, I would say. I interviewed in late October, and at that time I remember Director Ruiz saying that our group was still considered fairly early, so we didn't need to worry as much about there being spots available compared to people who would be interviewing later. But obviously, there will be great applicants interviewing throughout the year, so I would think that if you're a good fit for the school, you individually would have good chances whether you interviewed in September or January. That's just my two cents, though. 🙂

By the way, if you guys haven't checked out their new admission tracker yet, it's got some cool new info on it!

this is probably me being an utter n00b but i just stumbled across this on the main page: http://med.umich.edu/medschool/admissions/index.html

did not know that UM had an admissions tracker which is kinda cool and kinda really depressing haha. looks like they've sent out 10% of the interviews to a little less tahn 10% of all their applications!

Hi! I haven't been verified yet so I haven't gotten a secondary, but was wondering if someone could tell me if there is room on the app to put legacies?

Some schools only want to know parents- does UMich even ask, and if they do, is there room to talk about non-parents?

My dad did undergrad and grad there
My uncle got his MD there.
My cousin did undergrad there

UMich has you list your parents' addresses. In this section, there is also question that asks you if that parent recieved their MD from Umich, or is presently on the faculty at UMMS.

Did they send you the invite today? That would be remarkable seeing as its a holiday weekend

So they don't have an "other" or "additional information" section like some schools where you could put something random in?
Did you guys get the secondary invites after verification? I'm not verified yet (but it's been almost 3 weeks so hopefully soon!). I'm pre-writing the secondary so I can get it in as fast as possible but was just wondering when I could expect it. A bunch of schools sent it to me without verification. Thanks so much for your time, and best of luck with all your apps!

PS:

So sorry for asking what is probably a very dumb question for anyone who has actually gotten the secondary, but is the 1500 character limit with or without spaces (it makes a big difference). Is it expressly stated in the prompt, or do I need to email the admissions office?

Has anyone who applied MSTP at UMich gotten an interview invite? Or does anyone know if the numbers on the website include those apps?

I would probably trade a kidney for admission here 😛

And the secondary is including spaces

I have a question about how aggressive the rolling admissions is. I take the MCAT August 5, so even thought my secondary is almost done (I am waiting on one LOR) my application will not get looked over until the beginning on September. I'm a Michigan grad with some post-bacc classes at two other places and a 3.85c and 3.94s so I'm hoping that if I get a pretty good MCAT I can get an invite. But if I got invited in early September when would my actual interview be? I'm just wondering how big of a disadvantage it is since UM is my top choice.

I have friends who got interview invites in mid-October last season. They were offered the first two interview dates in January. One friend interviewed in January and was ultimately waitlisted; the other snagged a date in early December (if you tell admissions that you're a local, they'll call you up if any last-minute cancellations come up) and was later accepted.

Sorry it's not a direct answer, but you can probably guesstimate from this that September invite --> November/December interview. That being said, Michigan is VERY aggressive with rolling admissions. I think nearly 100 applicants were accepted on October 15th last year. Unless you can move up your MCAT date, your best bet is to make sure all your LOR's are sent in and ready to go, and that you have some stellar essays. And keep in mind that if you don't get an auto-invite, it may be a while before the committee even gets to look at your application, and sometimes it takes multiple reviews before an interview is granted.

P.S. I would also bookmark the UMich Med admissions twitter if you haven't already - what they say on there is far more reliable than what any of us SDNers say 🙂

I submitted my Secondary on 6/27, and it said it was complete. But when I checked my credit card activity, and I did not see U Mich take the payment yet, is this something I should worry about?

It takes a few days and considering the holiday weekend probably a bit longer.

I got my app in on 6/21 (took forever for my final spring grades to be released!) and so it looks like I will be verified tomorrow according to the verification thread, since they're through 6/20 as of today. How long after being verified did you guys receive your secondaries?

Also, for out of state students, what was the mcat cut-off/gpa for automatic interview invite? I was re-reading the thread but couldn't reach a conclusion. I got a 35 on my mcat (but I'm a re-taker... so that might not count?) and I imagine they are looking for higher for an auto-invite but have my fingers crossed.
Do you guys know if they just consider your higher score in general? I love the University of Michigan!!

Obviously it varies from year-to-year, and it's not a strict cutoff (since they also take into consideration the rest of your application, such as undergrad institution), but I think the numbers from a few years back was 38 OOS, 36 IS.

The auto-invite is nice, but definitely not necessary to get accepted. 🙂

If it says on the status page, "Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview", was I rejected?

Sounds more like you are being deferred or something. Not sure though

So did anyone see this on the UMichigan twitter page?

"I'm (deeply) troubled when I read apps that recount clinical work done abroad that one isn't trained to do=unethical=rejection."

In my personal statement, I wrote how I had helped vaccinate children abroad. However, I WAS trained to do this by foreign physicians at that clinic, and not everyone was allowed to help with the vaccinations...thus the training wasn't a sham. However, I didn't expressly write that "I was trained to do this procedure" in my PS. I feel like it would be so unjust if I got rejected because of what I did abroad. I just got trained in phlebotomy because I do clinical research at an American med school (which will go unnamed). My training was almost identical to the training I had abroad. Both consisted of some reading material, practice sessions on fruits and volunteers (without actual needle sticking) and then a certification test with the sponsoring physician. That's it. Both processes were pretty much the same. Do you think I should call UMich and explain myself, or just wait until my status changes and go from there? Right now, I'm under review...

I'm getting really bummed about this.

yes and also read this:

https://www.aamc.org/download/181690/data/guidelinesforstudentsprovidingpatientcare.pdf

Yea, I read that. This is the part that seems most relevant:

It is appropriate for students to provide preventive health education and to support the health care team by assisting in the provision of health treatment after receiving adequate instruction. However, students should never engage in any unsupervised activity that is
considered the practice of medicine including, but not limited to: diagnosing diseases, administering narcotics, performing surgical procedures, suturing or other tasks generally reserved for the trained health professional.

Well, doctors are not the only ones that can draw blood and give vaccines. Obviously nurses and techs of all sorts are certified to do this as well. Like I said, I'm certified in phlebotomy and I'm obviously not a doctor. My activities have all been supervised and I was trained. So did I violate anything? Should I call UMich and discuss it? I don't want to set off any red flags since my app is still under review...

Not necessarily. They may just have decided to come back to evaluate your app at a later time before they decide to grant you an interview or not.

I've been under review for some time now, so I'm assuming they haven't got to my application yet (it seems like they notify you if you won't be further considered at the time). I understand the admissions actively accepts updates. Would it be worth sending a quick line about a new honor/award I received (that is nationally known), to increase my chances for an interview?

Thank you for your input!

IMHO you're fine. I think what they're referring to are things which are done exclusively by physicians in the US (i.e. surgery, most diagnosis, etc.). You don't have to be a physician to give a vaccination, and you received appropriate instruction, and you were supervised - so as far as the situation being ethical, I think it certainly was. Whether or not to contact them is your call.

it wouldn't hurt!

Admissions sent me an email about status change but when I looked at the website it didn't.

Should I email them?

+1, I don't think it's a big enough deal to - all that happened was that it now says "status update as of 7/X instead of 7/Y." If I had to be neurotic, I'd say we may have been looked at once, and warrant a second review before a decision can be made...

but that's just me being neurotic.

I think this just means that you switched to being under review. You just happened to check and knew this before they sent you the email.

Recent UMich Tweet:

"Some of our status page descriptions are poorly written/confusing--my fault. We're re-writing for sake of clarity-I'm sorry about that-RFR."

I've been under review for almost two weeks now! I'm hoping that means they are seriously considering me.

Looks like I'm getting verified tomorrow. How soon after verification did you guys get your secondaries?
