Question: Where would be the best place to live in Memphis? I will be applying this summer for entry in the fall of 2013. By that time I will be married, and we will both be 22 yo. So my biggest concern is her safety. I have googled and googled and it seems the best bet would be to live on Mud Island. Any opinions on this? I have never been to Memphis. Thanks and good luck to those still waiting and congrats to those accepted!

I live on Mud Island. It's very safe, and there is a large number of medical/pharmacy/dental students that live here. It's also pretty convenient to the med school (about 10 minutes). Plus, it's right on the river which makes for a great place to walk or run.

I'm a graduate student at UT and have friends that have lived in almost every neighborhood. I'm also married and have a dog, so I understand your concern for safety. Although Memphis isn't the safest city, it has some very interesting neighborhoods and great barbeque.

UT is right in between midtown and downtown. Most of the apartments veryclose to campus are a little shady and in bad condition, so I would not recommendany of these. As silly as it is, Memphis has no highway through its center, so if you live out east, you actually have to drive around the entire city or through the middle, which usually takes atleast 30 minutes in good traffic. If you include the 10-minute walk from the UT parking lot to the main classroom buildings, this can be quite substantial. So, in my opinion, Germantownand East Memphis are a little inconvenient for someone who already is stretched for time.

Midtown has some nice blocks and some interesting restaurants, but the adjacent blocks very frequently have abandoned efficiency apartments with boarded up windows. Almost all the houses and apartments are very old, although some have been refurbished quite nicely. Also, almost everyone that lives in Midtown has had their car broken into at least once. I had my stereo stolen the first week I was in Memphis, and another one of my friends has had his car broken into 3 times in 4 years. I have removed my center console so that I don'th ave to pay another $200 for a broken window. Violent crime isn't any more problematic than average, but the personal property crime problem is more than a little annoying.

North Memphis and South Memphis are just plain unsafe, and are also inconvenient drives.

Downtown apartments (anything within a couple blocks of Main Street) are all very nice and safe. They are usually in high-rises, and most have security systems and locked or guarded garages. The downside is the higher cost, but being this close to UT,you partially make up for it in gas and time driving back and forth from the suburbs, especially if you shop around. If you aren't used to urban living, it is a little different, but I would argue that it is even safer than Germantown or the other eastern suburbs. My wife is a property manager out east and has seen quite a few home robberies in her 4 years. These kind of crimes are difficult if not impossible to commit in keycard-protected high rises. The commute to my lab is usually about 15-minutes door-to-door (5 minute drive, 10 minute walk). I'm very glad I moved downtown, even though it does cost about $400/month more.

I've also never heard any complaints about Mud Island, it costs slightly less, sometimes, and is about 5 more minutes away from UT. It has a suburban feel and a nice park.

Thank you to all 3 of you for your quick responses. They were all very helpful. Mud Island seems to appeal to me the most. I live in downtown Chattanooga at the moment and (I'm sure it is different than Memphis) I have found that I like living outside of downtown areas better. We also have a dog so any place that has some amount of area for him would be a plus. I'll try to drive out there this summer to check the city out.

To all who are going to be in the Class of 2016, good luck, hope your M1 year goes better then the abysmal trainwreck that ours has been for C/O 2015. I wish you all luck, but as an M1 this year that's "enjoying" our new train wreck of a curriculum, I cannot recommend UT as anything but a safety.

Yes, I'd love to know why you don't like the new curriculum. Thanks for your input!!

I would also like to know what are the negative aspects of the new curriculum. Is it resulting in bad overall test scores for the class? Do you have any basis to compare it to last year? Also, it seems that some positives to the new curriculumn would include less in class time? Has this occured? I am really interested in understanding in detail the aspects of the curriculum that are a "train wreck" as UT is currently my top choice and I am accepted to other medical schools.

sounds like someone is taking out their aggression from med school classes on an applicant forum.

Has anyone who interviewed the week of Jan 30th received their decision letter yet?

No I haven't.

They might not have been able to discuss you that week for whatever reason. She said she'd get mailings out no later than a week after a decision was made. That being said, I didn't get my survey until 5 days after I got an email about that.... so.... I don't know if that delay was on her end or the fantastic folks at the USPS.

Is it true that there are two possible emails you could get? And the one being about the survey is possibly an indication of a no decision letter?

Yes to the first, and no to the second. Everyone gets two emails: one pertaining to the the survey, the other to your letter. The survey email gives no indication of what, if any, decision was made. I got my survey email the day before the adcom was supposed to discuss me (which was just this past Friday.) My understanding is that the email about your decision letter doesn't give any indication as to what the decision was either. I think in the past there may have been some slightly different wording like using "packet" instead of "letter," but I don't think they do that anymore. Give it one more week and if you still haven't heard anything, send Diane an email. She'll respond pretty quickly. I definitely feel ya on being anxious to hear something, but having your interview that early is a good sign. As long as you didn't tell them you were a racist baby-eater in your interview, I bet you're in good shape.

So I interview on Monday 2/6!! I got an email on Thursday, 2/9 before the committee even met that the survey was on the way. Still haven't gotten anything about another letter....

Well the committee must not have discussed my file yet. That means my interviewer wasn't present at the last two meetings? Oh well... Maybe this Friday.

Have you at least gotten your survey?

still waiting for an invite. already interviewed(and been rejected off the WL) for ETSU

i received a "continue to review" decision in the mail, but I never got any sort of email

Yeah, that seems unusual. Maybe a clerical error? Check your junk folder to see if something got caught in there. That happened to me last year. After not hearing anything for 2 weeks, I think it's fair for you to touch base and see what's up. Hope you hear something soon!

Nope. I haven't heard from Mrs. Harris since interview day. I emailed her last night and hopefully she can tell me what's going on.

I still haven't heard anything, either. Thankfully, I'm still on ETSU's WL, but would really like to interview here. *sigh* I'm just praying that I don't have to reapply next year, even though I'd likely have many more opportunities after retaking the MCAT. C'mon, UT, show me some love.

OMFG!! Just got word from Dr. Strother that they "intend to invite me for an interview" but "do not yet have a date and time." Woooooohoooo!!!! I am SO happy! Hang in there guys!

Thanks! Any interview advice? Any cheap, but safe hotel recommendations?

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which was perfectly nice and very close to campus. I wouldn't run around the area late at night but otherwise it was fine (and free wifi / breakfast). Good luck!

I'm not sure yet. I sent Dr. Strother an email and received a reply stating that he knows they're planning to interview me, but haven't yet matched me to anyone or set a date. I'll post as soon as I find out.

no word for me 🙁 congrats

Well I emailed Diane and she said the committee made their decision on Feb 3 but the letters won't be mailed until this Friday. Weird. But atleast my letter is on its way!

Congrats. Hope it's good news!

Can I ask what you said and his reply? I'll try this. Thanks

Dr. Strother,

I am writing to check on the status of my application since submitting my fall grades and secondary application in early January. I am very excited about applying to UTHSC and believe I fit well with its mission and curriculum. I am eager to interview and look forward to receiving the committee's decision regarding my interview status.

Sincerely,

DA

DA,

Thank you for your email. We do plan to have you visit for interviews, but I do not have a specific date at this time. When you are scheduled, you will receive an email ahead of time with all the details. We appreciate your continued interest in the College of Medicine.

Nelson Strother

Keep in mind that this was my 3rd or 4th email total. I asked for status updates twice before receiving the secondary. Remember, as if I even need to say this, do not plagiarize. Just write something similar in your own words. I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck.

haha i got pretty much the same response as you DA

Got my letter today...No final decision. More waiting.

I also got the "no final decision" letter. Does anybody have any insight on this? What could the committee possibly be on the fence about? Are the on the fence between acceptance and waitlist, or waitlist and rejection? It just seems like they would have either liked me or disliked me.

I know that last year the 'no decision' letter meant that most likely you are going to get wait-listed come mid-April. Usually they only have a few spots open in the spring semester and you could possibly still receive an acceptance for one of these slots, but it's a greater probability you will be getting wait-listed in a few months. However, they generally take about 60 people from the waitlist for their incoming class so if Nelson tells you your number on the wait-list I'd say you're golden. BUT the wait-list has about 240-260 people on it so if you are either in the middle or bottom or even top 3rd I'd say you're not going to get in. Hopefully this helps.

I will second this insight. The "no decision" letter is 99% of the time a pre-waitlist letter because UT does not formulate and rank their waitlist until they have finished all interviews in April. When the waitlist is ranked, you can call Nelson Strother to ask about your chances and he will give you a general idea of where you are on the wairlist. If you are in the top 50 of the waitlist, you're generally in good shape, top 60 is kind of iffy, and anything past that usually needs to start thinking about reapplying or making other plans.

Congrats! Who knows, the letter may've been the catalyst for the decision.

Well this is my last shot for md programs. Pretty sure louisville, meherry, and morehouse aren't going to come calling lol and quillen said no earlier this month sadly. Thanks for the advice and motivation

Hang in there; but at least you're accepted to KYCOM. The truth of the matter is, in the U.S., a DO and an MD are equivalent physicians, albeit with marginal misperception from the snobbishly judgmental among the MD population. In reality, DOs and MDs match to the same programs and practice just as efficiently, with many DOs subjectively outperforming most MDs. I've heard so many MDs praising DOs for their superb work and clinical judgment. I think the whole MCAT barrier sometimes separates the amazing clinicians from the amazing academicians, you know?

Anyway, enough derailment. Good luck. Please let us know when you're scheduled and with whom. I've still not heard and will do the same. Good luck.

I am a current graduate student at UT who has applied to the medical school. I am quite familar with the strengths and weakness of the school in general and I have TA'd the medical student neuroanatomy lab. I am also somewhat familar with many, if not most, of the faculty. I'm in a student rec karate class with two frequent interviewers and an admissions committee member. If you have any questions about the school in general or Memphis, feel free to ask.

I was told that every person who completed a secondary usually will be interviewed. I was given 2 weeks notice (interview Feb 29, invited Feb 15) and was given the names of the people interviewing me. I was also told that they have interviews scheduled through the end of March, but they will possibly go on longer. There are two one-on-one interviews. One is preformed by a volunteer faculty member who has complete access to your file and the other does not have your grades or mcat scores and is usually a current medical student. If you have completed a secondary and are afraid of slipping through the cracks or will possibly have a scheduling conflict, it will not hurt you to CALL the admissions office.

I also received the still under review letter so with that being said... I have spent some time in Memphis and it is a very violent place. People call it the perfect blend of hell and Indian slums for a reason. Statistics show that if you go to uthsc, 9.3 out of 10 students will be a victim of theft, rape, murder, or all three. So for those who have already been accepted this is just a warning and you may want to go somewhere else and open up some more wait list spots. 🙂
