Though the Duke's intent may be noble, the reality is insensitive to the time and stress of the applicants and, I would argue, likely lowers the quality of the student body they recruit. But I would need more data to back that claim up. Either way, glad to be done with the secondary.

Mmm I'm not sure it would lower the quality of the student body. The group of students I met were pretty amazing and all very motivated and driven individuals. But to each their own. Best of luck with your app!

I haven't noticed any interview invites lately. Anyone else thinking they will be sending out their last batch of invites sometime this week?

Interview Invite this morning!!! I'm through the roof excited, but also terrified for the MMI style interview.

:soexcited:

Theoretically. That's why I'd be interested to compare its matriculation/acceptance yield with peer institutions. Judging from what I've read and heard, usually people do not know how well they truly fit at a school until they visit it during their interview.

I found this image in another thread. Duke's yield is one of the lowest in its bracket (top 10). So the argument that Duke's long secondary selects for the people who are most likely to attend Duke is either wrong or outright depressing for the institution.

I thought they said that our "score" (per se) would be determined already.

In other words, after interviewing, they review our complete file and the committee makes a decision on our desirability... it's just that we have to wait until March so that everyone can be seen before those decisions are released.

...It has been a few months, so I am not certain. School M.O.'s tend to blur.

Anyone know for 100%?

Maybe...or that it does indeed select for people more likely to attend and that its yield would be even lower without the selective pressure of the four essays. It still seems most likely that they use the essays to evaluate, rather than eliminate potential applicants.

what thread did you find this in? It may be useful in determining which school to attend...

There wasn't any extra data. I was looking at the old 2011-2012 thread for Penn to help prepare for an upcoming interview, and some users got into a fight about whether Wash U was all that great.

How does that chart help determine which school to attend? They are all great schools

I don't think they consider them.

Hey everyone. I'm new to this forum.

I interviewed at duke a while back and was thoroughly impressed by the school. I definitely would attend duke over any other school if I was accepted. I was wondering if any of you knew how duke responds to letters of intent or interest? I can't remember them making any mention of it on interview day.

Thanks!

Haven't checked my status on the secondary application site in over a month, so I logged in today only to find out I've been rejected. :-( Never received an email or anything. Ahhhh well, best of luck to the rest of you!

still under review- complete since beginning of August. Anyone know when they stop giving out IIs?

Based on previous years this should be about the last week they send out invites. But if they have more people to review they could possibly take longer. The good news is they won't leave you hanging, they will update your status page if they choose to reject pre-interview.

What does the rejection page read?

What does the rejection page read?

Here's what it says for me:

Application Status: Application Declined - Thank you for your interest in the Duke University School of Medicine. We deeply appreciate the work you've put into your application but we are sorry to inform you that the Admissions Committee has not selected you for an interview. While we recognize that this decision may be disappointing, it is in no way a reflection of your potential as a future physician. We wish you great success in your academic and professional pursuits.

So I totally understand the whole "last year, Duke gave out their last interviews on x date" argument. But ya'll aren't taking into consideration that Duke extended their application deadline by a month this year. Last year's timeline does not apply.

I agree that it is likely to go past day x, but it is also nice to know they don't leave you hanging once they do decide. So I was saying that of you hadn't been rejected yet there is still hope for an invite.

found this on their website:

July 1 to November 1:
Duke receives DukeMed Applications
Two Duke faculty members review applications Qualified applicants are invited to interview with Duke

Second Monday in September to February 15:
Interview season*
*Interview dates are subject to change as the calendar changes each admission cycle.

Kind of worried since it is way past Nov 1 when they are reviewing applications

I think that November 1st deadline referred to their previous deadline for secondary submission. I don't think it meant they only review secondaries for II until that date. Be patient and I'm
Sure things will work out. Like others said. Duke won't leave you hanging.

Lucky enough to receive an interview invite today! I was complete in mid-October. There are 11 MMI sessions on 6 days in January and February still available, which seems to suggest that more invites are coming. Good luck to everyone!

This translates to maybe 100-110 applicants (for those curious).

II this morning!! I am so excited I can't believe it. I was complete 9/20 and had pretty much given up hope. I applied for PCLT, c3.6 s3.9 39Q. Scheduled interview for early January, still lots of spots left.

congrats!! did you submit an update or was this II out of the blue? thanks

The general thought on sdn seems to be that updates Pre-interview invite to schools aren't very significant and won't help too much. At dukes interview, they mentioned that they weren't interested in receiving updates post-interview (if u get put on a wait list in spring it's different). If you have something significant to update them with and you think if may help you get an interview then id recommend calling admissions and asking if they would consider the update with your file. You may not find anyone in the office though since its the holidays. I'm not sure when they take off.

Best of luck! And happy holidays!

Just gave them a call. They said they didn't want updates right now, but in some previous years they have put up a notice on the portal that they were soliciting updates, and only at that point would they be accepted.

Is this pre or post interview?

Pre-interview. I was complete a loooong time ago and haven't heard anything since. As far as I know they have been giving out some rejections via the portal but mine hasn't changed. Tired of waiting! 🙂

Yea the waiting game sucks.

I'm assuming they are receptive to post interview updates?

I don't think so; the person who answered the phone seemed to be saying that they didn't want any additional info until they actively solicited it. But I could be wrong - someone who has actually interviewed there probably knows more than me about it.

That's the vibe I got at the interview.

hmm. I didn't get any vibe at my interview.

I want to update them with grades/publications, but definitely not if it'll be to my detriment.

Tricky tricky.

Only reason I say that too is because from what it sounded like, your "rank" or whatever is determined pretty soon after your interview meaning they won't reevaluate your file Pre-decision to assign you a new score. If your wait listed though I think it's different. I'm just saying this based on what I've read/heard on my interview day. Best bet is to call them after the holidays.

Yea, I think that's what I'll do.

Thanks for your take on the situation.

II today! Strange date and time but I'm so glad! I was rolled over into the MD pile from MSTP on 12/17 so I guess this would be my complete date.

There were three days available, Jan 28, Feb 4 and Feb 7, with Feb 7 being the last date of interviews according to the email.

So maybe like ~50-60 spots left...

CONGRATS on nabbing one!

I just got one a few minutes ago and the Jan date was gone. Those spots sure do fill up quick. Congrats.
