I believe FSU is one of the schools that runs interviews late into the season, until mid-late April. So I'd assume, read really really hope, they still are.

So I have been on hold the past several months and sent in an update about 2 months ago. When does the hold list usually tend to move and how often should we send updates?

Congrats for your UF radiology match, MossPoh!

Thank you. It wasn't my top choice, but I'm excited to go there. It is a great program overall, especially in my areas of interest.

For potential first years, I will be in town for one more year, so maybe you will rotate with me during your preceptor stuff. 😉

No more than once a month, a 4th yr fsu student told me. Better yet is to send one good one late april/early May while they are pulling alot of students from the alternate list, and perhaps it will be fresh in their minds. (if letters work at all)

I thought a letter tipped me over the edge long ago. I went to the open house in dress pants, nice shirt and tie. Found one of my original interviewers (and dean of admissions) and handed him the letter personally after introducing myself and stating my commitment.

Obviously, everyone can't do that but I attribute that to getting me off the waitlist. Yada yada yada, matched into Radiology at UF.

Anyone know the dress for the open house?

Business casual is probably a nice compromise. Nobody would think bad about casual, I don't think. Better safe than sorry though.

I will be interviewing at FSUCOM this Friday. It doesn't look like the interview feedback section for this school was updated much this application year. Does anyone have any interview tips/topics that would help me prepare(aside from some of the common interview questions)?

I would say be prepared to talk about your interest in primary care and family medicine. Although I haven't interviewed at FSU, based on their mission, these seem like likely topics of discussion.

Btw, when did you receive your II?

Thanks, I got it on Monday. I thought it may have been an April Fools joke lol

Hahaha, I was dreading hearing from any schools yesterday for that same reason!

Be prepared to talk about what is in your application! I'm sure all experiences are different depending on your interviewer but for my interviews they were both interested in learning more about what they read in my application. Best wishes to you on your interview!!!

S/N: Anyone interviewing April 12?

I'm wondering if I should email the admissions office. I want to know if there's a chance of them accepting me off of the waitlist if my first semester GPA in my post-bac program is 4.0. I don't know if they usually have you finish the post-bac or accept you due to better grades regardless of finishing.

They would give you a conditional acceptance contingent on completion of the coursework with acceptable grades. If you interviewed, you stand a chance at acceptance.

Schools used to do unconditional acceptances where you wouldn't even need to finish your undergrad if you chose not to. They don't really do that anymore that I'm aware of, excluding outliers. Masters and post-bacc stuff is a different story and it just depends on what the acceptance says, if it happens.

I am going to send in an update either Friday or Monday seeing that Monday is the day for multiple acceptances to decide. I was wondering what to put in, it if they work, and how many people tend to get of the wait list.

Update letters should showcase what has changed or been improved about your application since your interview date. They can work. I can't answer to how often. No one knows on a particular year how many wait listed applicants will be offered an acceptance. Some years 10-15% of the class comes from the wait list, other years only 3-4 applicants are accepted off the wait list.

yeah i've already been interviewed and waitlisted. I just wasn't sure if they were waiting on my grades from this semester before they made a decision. I get my grades the second week of May. I'm taking 11 credit hours of graduate coursework (Medical Physiology, Endo/GI Phys., and Graduate Seminar) and I should be getting all As or 2 As and 1 B (so 4.0 or 3.7 GPA).

If you haven't been accepted off the waitlist and get those grades in, I'd update them. It shows continued interest in the school and highlights your strong academics. Kills two birds.

I'm just curious as to what most first year students do for housing. Do most live off campus and in which areas? Are there any viable on-campus options available?

Also, is it feasible to get by without a car for a while or do you need one from the get go?

Thanks in advance!

I'm from Tallahassee, I would say you can't really get by without a car. It's too spread out and public transport is crap.

Just wanted to see if anyone on the hold list has heard anything today! I haven't yet 🙂xf🙂, but I hope there is a lot of movement 🙂

Also, does anyone know how many people were put on hold this year?

I've been on hold since 9/13....REALLY hoping to get off hold list. Haven't heard anything yet!

My advice is to get a car and live a little bit out from campus. I went there for undergrad and 🙂xf🙂 currently still on the hold list. If you stay close to campus, be prepared to have undergrads partying it up and annoying you. I lived nearby for a couple of years and after moving further out it is AMAZING. I love the quiet and peacefulness. Also, I got tired of waking up at 3 AM to gunshots every other night. It's a slight pain having to wake up early and driving to school, but it's worth it imo. Oh and avoid Alumni Village. I know it's meant for grad students and post-docs, but it's one of the most crime-ridden place. Dirt cheap, but for a reason.

Car is required. You will almost certainly have to drive to some of your clinical experience with physicians all over town.

I just got accepted off of the hold list today. I do not think I will be going - choosing UF COM. Hopefully one of you gets the spot! Also... the accepted email had my name on it, but my acceptance letter was actually addressed to someone else. Way to make me feel special!

Thanks for the info.

I come from a small town and went to undergrad in a pretty safe city so i'm not used to gunshots. I guess I will plan on commuting to school.

I lived both far away and close. They both had their benefits. I never really had problems with noise, but I stayed in a single apartment away from the bars that is leased by individual landlords. It was great during game days to not have to hunt for parking when I wanted to study.

Places further off campus are cheaper for better quality and are (usually) quieter. I did spend a fair amount of time stuck in traffic from poorly timed lights. Mornings weren't bad, but evenings would sometimes take me 45 minutes for what was normally a 10 minute drive.

Yay for you, and Yay for me!!! That's great that you got accepted, and even better that you're going to UF. I went there for Undergrad. Gainesville is a great city, public transportation is reliable, and the city basically caters to students. You're going to love it! 👍

Just to make sure, there is no way we can find out where we are on the wait list, correct?

I tired... they wouldn't tell me. All I know is that not everyone interviewed was put on hold, that that the average is 350 interviews, 190 offers of acceptance for 120 seats.

Does anyone know when the committee for the BRIDGE program meets, and if the students on the hold list have a good chance at getting in? I am assuming that the next few students that didn't get in to the MD program are offered the Bridge program. Could anyone shed some light?

When I called earlier today, they said that the entire class was filled 🙁 I know that people will start to say no around May 15th when other schools tell them yes, but still...disheartening.

I spoke to Ms. Urrutia and she said at the end of May but I've heard of people finding out the first week of May for both the last year and the year before

They will most likely not give out any information on waitlist positions. Even if they did, it doesn't tell applicants much. Everything depends on how many students keep their acceptances. Some years 10-20 students from wait list are given acceptances. Other years as few as 3-4 people are taken off waitlist due to so many accepted applicants keeping their spots. I have said this before, but I will reiterate this to those of you still waiting for your first acceptances. You should assume you WILL NOT be receiving an acceptance this season. Consider what you need to be doing to strengthen your application for next season if you decide to reapply (research, graduate program etc). Do not sit on your haunches doing nothing at this point. Remember, AMCAS apps open sooner than you think and you want something new on there to tell schools about.

Unfortunately the BRIDGE program does not work like that. They don't trim the top of the waitlist to offer acceptances to the first few applicants that did not receive acceptances. Usually BRIDGE students consist of disadvantage applicants from rural areas that may have not done well enough scholastically to receive an initial MD spot, so they are given a "trial-run" year to see if they can keep up academically with other MD students before being offered a spot in the next class the following year.

Thank you!! I applied as a disadvantaged student, and I was interviewed pretty late in the application cycle. No one mentioned it in the interview, so I didn't know if I would still be considered. I've already finished an SMP program with a 3.87 GPA, but my MCAT verbal score is really holding me back. I would be willing to take another year to do this program. What do you think?

Thanks for the information, it's my first application year and I know some schools like UCF will tell you right where your are. I have back up plans, I am just hoping to get in my first choice and be closer than what I am to my family and fiance who is attending FSU for graduate school! Here is to hoping for the best and not many people choosing to go here!

Hey everybody,

I got an invite to interview at the school but I have my reservations. It feels like I'd be interviewing for a waitlist spot. What are the chances that someone interviewed so late in the process actually gets in?

P.S - I have yet to take biochem and it's listed as required. How much would that be counted against me seeing as how I have yet to take it simply because other schools have not required it.

Thank you

You're definitely interviewing for the Hold list. I interviewed in March, and the dean said that they had already offered all 120 acceptances. Since then, they have pulled people off the hold list, but as of now, there are no more seats available. Where have you already been accepted?

NSU and a couple other DO schools.

Waitlisted at FIU and waiting to hear back from Drexel.

At this point, the chances of going straight to the waitlist are high in my opinion. However, if you have yet to get another MD acceptance and would prefer MD > DO, NEVER turn down any interview offer for any reason. Not taking BCHM might hurt you, but they already invited you for an interview, so somewhere down the line in reviewing your app they decided you still merited an invitation.

Congrats! UF has a great program. All of my friends who went their really enjoyed their experience.

If you haven't already turned down your admission to FSU COM, I'd say think long and hard about it. I had a great experience here, performed exceedingly well, learned more than I could imagine and matched very well.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice.. I did love the campus, but I will have two siblings at UF as well. FSU is also quite farther away from home. How did you like the "satellite" campuses for 3rd/4th year... to me it seemed that the 1st/2nd years didn't really have too many upper classmen to look for guidance.

I interviewed at FSU in October and am currently still placed "on hold". I have been accepted to USF's MPH and MSMS programs and trying to decide which one would better my application for the next admissions cycle. I have a fairly low MCAT score, but am planning on retaking it this summer. I am leaning towards an MPH program, as I feel this would provide a greater benefit to me in the long run. However, my science GPA is around a 3.6 and perhaps the MSMS program would help me in this regard and also prepare me for medical school courses. Thoughts? Has FSU COM accepted a fair amount of graduates from either of these programs?

Congrats on your acceptance! I recently graduated from USF's MSMS program, and I feel that it has prepared me for medical school! However, don't do it online! They aren't viewed the same. Not sure how many people are accepted from that program to FSU, but there was another guy at my interview also in the same program. I'm on hold too, so make sure your MCAT score increases.

Good Luck in whatever you choose. Like we've been advised on previous posts, those on hold should plan that we will NOT get accepted from the hold list.

That makes a lot of sense. You definitely need the support in med school.

I'm at the Daytona campus and I LOVE it. I really think it's a model that works. We don't have a lot of the same stuff you have in a traditional teaching hospital, but I really think that what I've gotten here has prepared me extremely well. Every patient I saw was with my attending. On surgical rotations, I was first assist on every single surgery. That's just something that other med students don't get. My first day of my surgery rotation, my attending took the skin marker and drew a line on the skin, he then proceeded to hand me a scalpel and say "cut from here to here. Don't cut further, the last student cut further." I got better than 90th percentile on all but one of my shelf exams third year and I fully attribute that to seeing a boatload of patients in the "real world" hospital. I also got pretty close with most of my attendings. I have had every one of my attendings take me out for lunch/dinner/a beer. One even bought my wife and I a really nice wedding present. My campus dean is a great mentor for me and someone with whom I can always talk.

Yes, you lack guidance from students in their clinical years while you are in your pre-clinical years, but I don't really think I missed out on anything. In my opinion (and maybe just because I went to FSU), I view med school as two different schools. Pre-clinical and clinical years are entirely different and I don't know that having a relationship with third years would really help much during your third year.

Honestly, the only problem with our model is that since we don't have a central hospital, we lack some residencies. Your rec letters (from FSU faculty) are going to be amazing and personal, because they know you very well, but they aren't from big name faculty associated with a residency. This can be remedied by doing externships.

I really do love my school. I think that it has prepared me very well for residency and I landed in a stellar program for residency in a semi-competitve field. Plus, the tuition for FSU was the lowest in the state when I started 4 years ago by several thousand a year (and I think it still is).

Tl;Dnr - FSU was a great experienced. Couldn't have gotten better prep for residency and I'm at the program of my dreams.

oh man I would love to get an interview invite lol. I would love to stay in FL.

Question. I sent a letter of intent awhile back (I'm pretty sure it was back in like December or something). I was wondering if it would be a good idea to send another one now that the cycle is ending or is it normal to send only one. I did send in an update letter about some new things I've been doing recently.
