This is the crappiest process ever!!!!

Yes, it really is 🙁

I'm sorry to see others are also in such a tough spot. I was really hoping for some movement this week, but it looks like that's not going to happen. Every time my phone beeps my heart jumps into my throat. It's enough to drive a person crazy!

Is it crazy to be looking at Portland apartments and childcare without an acceptance in hand? I don't know about Portland's rental market but if I don't get daycare lined up soon all the August spots are going to be taken. Arghhh :bang:

You may not get a place exactly where you like--but you'll find a do-able spot no matter what. There is a lot of turnover here. The city is large enough. (edit: so long as you don't havea big dog. That part was a royal pain for me)

I can't speak for childcare though. I have no idea about that.

I wouldn't recommend going off SDN to know how close you are. If you want an exact number you can call OHSU and ask how many people are still ahead of you holding their wait list spot rather than withdraw. I did that last year when I was 10 away and everyone but 1 had said they wanted to stay on the wait list.
Called today - more people waiting than I had thought :-(

Accepted!! Holy. Crap.

I'm on my phone so I haven't seen the portal yet but I hope some other waitlisters got some good news too.

Welcome 🙂

Looks like the daycare hunt was not in vain.

Edit: curious how far it is--portal still hasn't updated

Congratulations! That means I'm just a few away now. I hope we will be classmates this fall!

Thanks all 🙂 Fingers crossed that it keeps moving for you guys.

How much time is one given when offered a position off the WL to respond?

The email didn't specify, it just said to reply if you don't want your seat. I thought I'd heard that other people were given a two week deadline but maybe that was just for the first round of acceptances on May 16th?

They send you a packet a little while after they email you, and you have two weeks from when you receive the packet to respond.

Welp...I just had a short feedback session with OHSU (I was really curious what happened because I thought I had a pretty solid app & interview). Apparently my app and my one-on-one scores were high, but I bombed the MMI. Some of my MMI interviewers thought I was awkward, rambling or indecisive. Oh well.

For a school with such a laborious secondary application, I am still kind of amazed at how minimally it is weighted in the actual admissions decision.

So, take home for folks applying next year: The MMI seems kind of like a big game (and some of the questions are close to ridiculous), but take it seriously and prepare for it. I think I took it a little too lightly.

I might as well add... I had my feedback ("exit") interview some time ago (though mine was in-person), and apparently I bombed the MMI (including the one-on-one). I was characterized as hesitant, lacking in conviction/passion, etc. (Probably nerves, but...)

The rest of my app (grades, MCAT, ECs) were viewed as solid. No comments on secondary or LORs so presumably they were just unremarkable.

Anyway - for anyone to which it may matter - I agree with Ellie: "take it seriously and prepare for it. I think I took it a little too lightly."

Best wishes to all. I now need a fresh PS, introspection, and interview practice... and luck in the next cycle.
AND CONGRATS to all who are IN! 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! How would you recommend preparing for the MMI?

You read on medical ethics, patient rights. But don't over study. I was told that I was too prepared, whatever that means.

I'm not trying to be contradictory, but I didn't do any preparation at all for the MMI, and it was fine. They aren't trying to trick you with the scenarios, so if you choose an answer and have good reasons for choosing it, you should be okay. I wouldn't stress over it too much.

And remember: if you've made it to the interview, they want you to be there and see you as a potential student. The interview is worth a lot, but at that stage, you've already impressed them and they want to get to know you better. You deserve to be there.

I think this is the last week I can wait on OHSU. So to anybody holding multiple acceptances, please decide soon. Thank you!

Actually I, personally, need to prepare for interviews in general -- being articulate and confident -- and I think that just comes with practice.

However, I do have a previous post with info about the MMI -- take a look:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=13196102#post13196102

I also agree that being well-read, and thoughtfully informed about current issues in medicine helps, but that you're not really "supposed to prepare" for the MMI.

I think my issue wasn't the MMI format as much as self-confidence and the ability to be articulate, both in general and with regard to my motivation to become a physician. Everyone's experience may vary since it depends on who you get as interviewers, too.

That being said, for next time (hopefully if there is one!) I would err on the side of better preparation all around. I would try to anticipate critical questions someone might come up for me based on my application, and practice responses. I would review all the links in my own post included above, particularly the sample questions. The sample questions might at least give you an idea of format, so it's not a surprise, if you haven't had any experience with the MMI format. Myself, I'd reviewed those links much earlier (months earlier!), but in hindsight, I wish I'd reviewed them all again within ~5 days of the MMI.

I can see this point of view. However, I told myself I needed to be myself and not worry about preparation, and for me, it was a mistake. I think in part, it can be a matter of luck with who you get as your interviewer, especially for one-on-ones. Sometimes you get someone you'll naturally have a good rapport with, other times it could be the opposite... For me, it definitely did not feel like they were just trying to get to know me better. I was put on the defensive, grilled. That is just the style of some interviewers. And I can see that as being valid -- you have to be a bit tough to be a successful physician -- some interviewers will want to test your ability to withstand a little stress. It was unfortunate for me, but oh well.

I agree an interviewee can come across as "too practiced," too. It's true that if you answers seem too practiced, it can seem suspicious to an interviewer. As with so many aspects of the application process, the admissions committees want to see you thinking, and thinking critically, not you trying to give the right answer.

Anyway, I'm not trying to argue... I'm just sharing my experience... FWIW! Best wishes to all.

It is 53 today - banaphones are you in?

Thank you sdn for listening to me and withdrawing! I was so close to moving away but now I can stay in Portland.

Congratulations! I do not know if I will be as lucky ... losing hope. May be some more people on SDN will hear yuor request ...

FB shows 136 people - can someone please let us know if the class size has been reached? If not how many medical students are part of he group to get an idea how many more may be available? Thank you.

I believe their target class size is 144. But I doubt that the facebook group is an exact indicator of the current class size. I think some of the members have gone somewhere else, and surely others haven't joined yet.

I guess I am the only lone bird left in this forum :-( - still hoping for some movement this week - the last week I can wait.

Good luck. 🙂
Please can one of you guys on OHSU 2017 FB page help to get some information. Called OHSU and they said 3 of the people offered last week (51, 52, 53, 54) have not yet responded. Please can you guys ask the FB group to see if all of them have decided to accept and just have not responded? Or is there still someone in this list who is undecided - if so I plead with such a person to make a decision today or tomorrow - please!

The email I got did not require a reply unless I was planning to withdraw my application, so unfortunately no responses from those people could be a bad sign for you. Of course it's also possible they're planning to withdraw and just haven't gotten around to it yet. I know at least one person from that group who is taking their seat, but I can't say about the other three. I hope it moves for you soon 🙁

Congrats to those that made it in or are going to make it in. To those that didn't, keep up the faith! OSHU has been a great school so far, and I hope to see you on campus soon!
