So do you guys think we'll see some good movement today? Saturday was the deadline for alternates to accept their waitlist spots and I'm sure many of the first 26 people offered acceptances last week have turned them down over the past few days. How long do they have to respond anyway?

I'm hoping to see the number go up to at least 30-35 today. I think people get about 2 weeks to decide once they get in off the alternate list, but I would guess that many people on the fence went to the second look on Friday and will make decisions soon. Did anybody on here go to the second look on Friday?

Also I think I remember reading somewhere on this thread that OHSU placed more in staters on the low end of the alternate list so it might move less than previous years. Does anybody remember if this was a rumor or was it confirmed?

Accepted Through: 27

I would've preferred no movement at all, actually. The fact that it only moved by one kinda scares me 🙁

I hear ya. Best not to fret over it so early, since we might be in it for the long haul.

I heard this as well but I don't know how legitimate it is. I'm in-state and on the lowish end, but not as low as I'd like to be of course 🙄

True enough!

The cookie I just got at an OHSU lecture 😀

They do love their saran wrap. I apparently have the nose of a bloodhound and once a cookie has been contaminated with that smell I can no longer enjoy it.

Any waitlist movement this week? Seems way too early for them to have slowed to a crawl...

I don't recall ever hearing anything suggesting that IS applicants were distributed differently over any particular ranges of the waitlist (low vs high). It always feels like[1] IS applicants are heavily represented on the waitlist in general. This could be simply because most OOS applicants have already withdrawn their apps by May 15th, as most schools a) do not make heavy use of waitlists to fill their class and b) have a lot more decisions made a lot earlier in the app cycle.

Alternately, as has been speculated here before, OHSU may be making an effort to offer firm acceptances to woo OOS candidates, since most IS applicants will still be hanging on in desperation until the eleventh hour... 🙄

1. Then again, it could also be that IS applicants are simply more vocal and visible on SDN.

Now that's more like it! :highfive:

There's always a wait list movement of 20 or so between June & July. I will be shocked if you're not joining our class. I'm not trying to get your hopes up, but it's looking good.

So, I'm a little confused. I'm rejected, per the awkwardly written message:

Thank you for participating in the interview process for admission to the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine. The Admissions Committee regrets to inform you that placement in the entering class of 2013 cannot be offered to you.

Each year, the Committee has the difficult task of selecting a limited number of interviewed applicants from a well-qualified group to become the entering class. This year we expect to interview over 500 candidates for the available positions. Unfortunately, many qualified applicants cannot be offered admission.

We offer our sincere regrets and thank you for your interest in the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine. We wish you the best in your future academic and professional endeavors.

However, I still am receiving updates about the waitlist movement via the portal:
Message Board for All Applicants:
5/21/2013

Accepted Through: 38

Applicants to the 2013 admissions cycle:

The entering placements have been chosen along with a ranked alternate list. Alternate positions are held through first-year student orientation, which concludes on August 16, 2013.

Please continue to check the Admissions Portal for the most up-to-date information concerning your application.

Frankly, this seems weird to me. The other schools from which I was rejected simply stopped giving me any news/updates. Are all OHSU applicants (even those rejected) getting these messages? Why does OHSU want its rejectees to know about waitlist movement? Am I missing something?

Thanks, I hope you're right, and I really hope that movement happens sooner rather than later! I can't afford to wait until July to know where I'm going, unfortunately.

I'm guessing it's just part of the universal portal message that is posted for all applicants, regardless of their admissions status. It is weird though!

You know what is bothersome - why does FB page still show only 89 people. I wish FB would be a good indication of how many people have decided to go here ...

I would guess that many of the accepted students either do not have facebooks or do not know that the group exists.

Even if the fb group had 136 members it probably would not be a good indication of how much more the alternate list will move, because we already know that 136 people currently have an acceptance from OHSU. And due to AAMC rules we know that for most of those 136 people it is their only acceptance (only the people recently accepted off of the wait list may have multiple acceptances at this point).

The only way to that I can think of to estimate how much more the alternate list will move would be to ask the current 136 people with acceptances and see how many of them are still holding onto wait list spots at other schools. Perhaps somebody in the OHSU fb group could make a wall post asking about this?

Also, not all of the 89 people are class of 2017. There are a couple current MS1 and MS2 students on there to answer questions.

Since OHSU takes a large number of non-trad students, some may not even think about a FB page. I didn't even have a FB until I was accepted at my first school. Then I figured that it really was the way that most of the traditional crowd communicates, so I broke down and created an account. There may be some others in the same boat as me.

That's good to know, thank you! I suspect there's also some people in the group who have been accepted but won't be attending, so it's probably not the most useful indicator.

True. There is at least one person that I have been talking to on the FB page that has decided on a school elsewhere. I am sad to see that person go, but a decision had to be made, and now that person is no longer planning on attending OHSU, but still listed on the FB accepted page (I just checked... still there).

I wonder what number the wait list is up to now. I am being too lazy to check right now.

Still at 38 🙁 It's been a week since any movement happened. Not fun.

Did this person decide this recently or did he withdraw a while ago? There has not been any wait list movement in a week

I talked with him in mid-May. So he probably withdrew before the May 15th deadline. Sorry to get your hopes up.

Based on past trends, there will be waves of movement as we move through the first few weeks of summer. I still hope for the best for those of you that are still wait-listed.

None intended. If you think about it, they run pretty much non-stop from August til May.

Not quite true. I think they take a long Thanksgiving weekend, Christmas break, spring break, and other major holidays off just like the rest of the school. Yes, they work hard. But that is their job to make those decisions. Their job is not finished until August when classes start and every seat is filled, then they get to rinse and repeat for the next year. I would also bet that some could take short vacations in June and July, just not everyone at the same time.

How long is the lag time between being offed a seat off the wait list and needing a decision made? Isn't it like two weeks? If so, there may be another wave of acceptances going out before the end of next week (maybe this week). :luck:

:boom:

I really hope they're not taking a vacation. I understand that admissions is a stressful business but it's do-or-die time for a lot of wannabe OHSU matriculants right now. I still have to arrange childcare for my daughter, look for housing, get my loans figured out, etc etc.

Anyway, I'm done whining for now. I thought this was pretty neat: http://www.katu.com/news/medicalale...ells-from-cloned-human-embryos-207559051.html

Until these errors were found in the paper...

Uh oh. Not a happy face on Dr. Mitalipov.

Seriously, whatever grad student put those figures together was probably fired pretty quickly, even if it was just an honest mistake.

Have you tried calling them?

Called, spoke to Katy who was super nice (as always). She said she's sure more movement will happen but she doesn't know when, and that they're not following up with people who have multiple acceptances for another two weeks.

Thank you for calling and updating us! I hope the list keeps on moving soon. Did Katy give you indication as to how much she thought the list would move? I am trying to decide if I should call to set up an exit interview to prepare for the next cycle.

No, she didn't really have a lot of information. It sounded like someone else was handling the waitlist. What number are you again?

Oh, and...

Accepted Through: 39

Haha, lets hope that Katy was expecting much more wait list movement than just the one person today...

My number is between 50 and 55, but at least the fact that they haven't started tracking people down gives me hope. I wonder if somebody from OHSU could tell us how many of the students they have accepted are still holding multiple acceptances. That is probably a much better indicator of how much more the wait list will move than the number of people in the facebook group.

Thank you for the info. One thing I am confused about - how can people be still holding multiple acceptances?

Becuase the AAMC "rules" aren't real(?)... Thus the reason OHSU really doesn't follow them (or so I've heard, I don't really even know what that means).

Katy mentioned at second look that we have the right to hold multiple acceptances until the first day of class. She said they progressivley move from inquisitive emails (about your matriculation) to angry phone calls. They don't take real action until the bitter end.

She may have been exaggurating about how long you can actually hold multiple (not sure), but it sounded like it's definitely near the last couple weeks.

I don't know, I was confused about that part myself. I guess the deadline was May 15th but they don't actually bother people about it until mid-June?

These traffic rules may not be real at OHSU, but other schools will enforce them. So if someone holds an acceptance at OHSU and another school, the other school is going to call them up and make them make a decision.

The only point of the May 15th deadline is for people to get their deposits back. Also it is a "suggestion" by the AAMC not a strict requirement to drop all but 1 that day. Also people could be holding multiple acceptances because they got off wait lists and are deciding now because people aren't expected to make a same day decision.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!

Also, we're up to #40 👍

I just updated my copy of the waitlist graph and if the trendline is any indicator we should reach #50 around June 11th-13th. Here's hoping!

I hope you are correct. It is very disheartening to see 1 step increase every week for the last 3 weeks.

No kidding. Looking at data from previous years there were still some big jumps after weeks of very little progress, so I'm trying to stay hopeful.

I'm guessing that the "big jumps" happen when a bunch of people have already withdrawn from the waitlist. For example, if #42 to 45 are no longer on the waitlist, the next person to be accepted will be 46. So it would seem like the waitlist jumped 5 spots in one day when in reality only one person withdrew their acceptance.

Looking at past year trends it looks like there are about 5-10 jumps after June 1st. So if everybody in the 40s are still on the waitlist, it will be a long month where the waitlist moves up one person at a time. On the other hand, there have not been too many sdn posts of people in the 40s so it may jump up to 49 after the next person withdraws.
