The thing is, this scenario is so situational. It really all depends on who is the doc above you. This can be true anyplace. If they don't care to teach, obv it's a waste of time.

I have a handful of Ms2 pals who seem to really enjoy it.

Oregon Health & Science University freezes hiring, citing federal cuts

"The OHSU hiring freeze and other cuts, including to travel and consultants, will be focused on education programs and research to preserve its hospitals and clinics..."

Uh oh. I guess this sort of thing is possibly in the cards for a lot of state schools.

Well with them recently spending almost $300 million on the new building for med and dental students, I doubt the schools are going to see much of an effect.

It's true, and for all we know "education programs" could mean CME or something. It's not like the current faculty are being fired. But it does look like the research budget is taking a hit.

Yeah, I have heard a lot of PI's in the labs around mine talk about research funding taking a hit and not being able to hire recent grads or getting summer students any more.

Glad I'm already locked into a position 🙂

:sigh: However, it does suck for those of us that aspire to conduct research as a facet of our career. 🙁 But it doesn't affect my nightly dreams about that OHSU acceptance. 🙂

If anybody's still wondering about post-interview rejections...

I interviewed in the second week of interviews. 3.8 GPA, 34Q, Oregon resident, and I thought that my OHSU interview was my best one...

Flat out rejected in November. I appear to be the only one OHSU disliked enough to reject post interview...Great. At least I got to visit my family in Portland while I was home interviewing...

Sorry about that man. I'm sure you're not the only one rejected outright, the others probably aren't bold enough to post it though. You should get in somewhere with those stats if the rest of your application is good. Best of luck!

Have you heard anything from them about an exit interview to go over what they did not like about you?

Bummer, I'm so sorry to hear that. But like DAPI posted, your stats are fantastic and should lead to a few acceptances elsewhere. GL! :luck:

Still no summary...very disappointed!

Also this has kind of been addressed but does anyone want to speak to the new building what all it has why it is AWESOME?

Sorry to hear it. Same thing happened to me the last two times I applied - rejected immediately after interviewing. By "immediately" I mean that my only status change post-interview was straight to rejection, with no stop at holds. The first year, the rejection came very quick - like 6 weeks post-interview. Second time, they waited almost 3 months. Anyway, I empathize.

If you don't get any other acceptances, definitely take advantage of their exit interview/feedback process. Even if it doesn't actually give you any useful information, you should do it on principle alone and when you reapply you must show them how you've taken their feedback and improved yourself.

Do you want to expand on their exit interview stuff? I'm still hopeful of an acceptance somewhere, but just am preparing for the worst.

I guess I would like to know what kinds of things they tell you.
- do they tell you specifically what they did/did not like?
- how you did on your interview?
- what EC's they think could be improved?
- Anything else helpful?

Anyone else out there on SDN not heard anything yet from OHSU? I was complete in November (md/mph applicant) and still waiting...

long time lurker, first time posting on this thread. So though you don't know me, don't worry, I am familiar with most of you thanks to SDN stalking abilities! 🙂

What does your portal status say?

Well the message at the top still says "If the OHSU Admissions Portal shows that your file is complete and you have not heard from us yet, we will send you notification through the portal by the end of February. Thank you for your patience. "

And my file has shown complete since mid-November, with no updates since then. So my status is "complete"-- that's all...

Is that what you mean?

^ I still haven't heard back either and I see the same message in the OHSU Admissions portal. I am in a mission-based group, btw.

The exit interview the first time was pretty brutal. This was back when they were still doing the traditional hour-long 1-on-1 interviews, and one of my two interviewers thought I was completely unsuited to the profession, had no sense of appropriate behavior, was unteachable, rude, crass, a poor communicator, would be unable to adapt/conform to being a medical student, and basically a terrible awful no good person. I wish I were exaggerating. To this day, I'm still somewhat baffled at how our interview could have gone so badly for me to give them such a thoroughly horrible impression of me. But, that really happened, and I've been digging my way out of that pit ever since.

The feedback interview did confirm that the other areas of my application was pretty solid. They went over letters (not in any great detail, but kind of obliquely confirming that I didn't have any "stinker" bad LORs), academics (GPA + MCAT), and professional preparation which means clinical/patient/doctor experiences like shadowing/volunteering. In my case, it was all about the awful down-in-flames interview.

The second time, it was frustrating in a totally different way. Same deal - we reviewed all of the pieces and parts of my application. Letters good, academics good, professional prep good, motivation for medicine good. Second year interview experience (MMI this time) was also good, with a few informative comments... but then they trotted out the same verbatim quotes from the previous year's rejection and feedback. I even pressed the admissions officer to give me any specific suggestions on ways I could improve my app, and while they couldn't actually tell me there was no room for improvement what they did sort of admit was that any improvements I might make (more classes, better MCAT, more volunteering/clinical time, etc.) would be approaching the diminishing rate of return on investment.

Basically, they need more data points that are recent and positive to be comfortable judging that first disastrous interview as a true outlier. This year, I addressed the matter head-on in the secondary essays, and my one-on-one interviewer also asked about what had happened and what I'd done to address this feedback. My response was that I'd shared the feedback with friends, family, even my therapist... soliciting their additional comments and constructive criticism on the issues identified in the feedback, and doing some serious self-analysis and evaluation.

Anyway, that's my sob story. I've talked to a number of other folks who've gotten feedback and they were usually given some specific clue or hint like "you need more clinical time" or "more doctor exposure (i.e. shadowing)" or something concrete. I know some people who felt that the "reasons" they were given were pretty small and petty - I couldn't judge it because I wasn't there and don't know all the intimate details of their app - but even if that's the case there's clearly something missing from their app that needs redemption in OHSU's eyes.

They offer the feedback interviews in late May/June timeframe, which honestly is already too late to make significant revisions to your application. So I know it seems hopeless and perfunctory, but you should do it anyway. If their feedback is about something really big (i.e. the remediation cannot be accomplished in time for the next app cycle) then perhaps taking a year off before applying again might be the right tack.

Even if you already know (or think you know) what's wrong with your app, you should really get the feedback. There might be things you hadn't though of, or maybe they'll just confirm what you already suspect is the problem. In either case, it's important to continue the conversation, show them that you're motivated, and show them what you've done to address their feedback. I think it would look really odd (somewhere between clueless, disinterested, and arrogant) if someone reapplied to OHSU without having asked for feedback on how they could improve their app.

I have a feeling you got it this year. 3 years 3 interviews I don't think they would keep inviting you unless they liked you

+1

And Pka? My bad, I know I've been slacking. I'm working on it (and a manuscript), but have been so burned out from the post-bac prep, ECs, full-time job, multiple research endeavors, and interview trail. This is my first semester off of post-bac; so I've been uber lazy as of late 🙁 But I promise, it is forthcoming 🙂

Thank you for sharing your story. Hope you get in this year!!! Today we hit a three weeks mark after interview. Three more to go and we will find out!

Ha yea, I am 1 for 1 telling dzoz he would get in do far here's to hoping the streak continues for you and a fellow IT person
Thanks! Hopefully your predictions are a good luck charm. 🙂

Not so fast... it's only been two weeks! Anyway, my sanity-preserving expectation is that I won't get anything even resembling solid news until May 15th. If I get news any sooner, it'll be a (hopefully) pleasant surprise. 🙄

I got in as a re-applicant and went through the exit interview as well. I was actually very disappointed in my exit interview because I didn't feel like I was given any advice when I knew friends of mine were told exact things to fix such as "re-take the mcat, get more shadowing, more volunteering, etc..."

The time I was rejected was when they still did the traditional format. The first thing I was told was that I had a very good application with tons of diverse activities, great LOR, great grades. They told me that my interviewers ranked me as highly competitive or competitive in all categories with no red flags.

After hearing that I deliberately asked questions like "Should I re-take the MCAT" and was told that "shouldn't be on my list of priories". Then I asked "should I shadow more" and was told that I had plenty of shadowing experience. "Should I volunteer more" and was told I had plenty of volunteering".

At that point I was very frustrated and was running out of things to ask and finally just said I didn't understand how to improve. All I was told was that they have more talented applicants than spots and I should just try to get more life experience. To me this seemed to imply I just needed to be a little older. I had a friend who got this same advice.

I guess the point of this is that they may not give you any concrete things to work on but if you re-apply you have a good shot at getting in the next time. It worked out for me at least 🙂 Hope that helps!

Oh gosh you are right... time passes so slow when we are waiting for medical school....

That sounds quite a lot like my second feedback interview, except that being, ahem, well over 30 years old they didn't give me the line about needing to get more life experience. It honestly felt like they dug up the first year's disaster because they couldn't come up with any meaningful reasons to give me the second time.

My assessment of this is that they don't have a really tangible reason, i.e.they just liked other applicants better, or there's something about you they don't like but they can't put their finger on it. Or they doubt your motivations, so they send you away and see if you reapply to prove you really "mean it." (Because, geez, I have no idea how anyone accidentally spends thousands of dollars and hours preparing a solid medschool application...)

It's strange. Most other medical schools don't play these kinds of games.

thanks! ...I suppose I just wanted to be in the same boat as someone ... Do you know if they are in a mission-based group?

She might be referring to me, as we know each other. (I'm not on SDN much lately.)

I have heard nothing at all since turning in my secondary; I'm mission based (Oregon resident). I also called yesterday (3/1/13) and they confirmed I'm still under consideration; my file is still being screened. So hang tight. I think that if we were already rejected, we'd have been notified.

Thanks Dianyla and mybubbles627 for the response!

Yeah, if I didn't get in anywhere I would definitely do the exit interview. It seems like some people get good feedback and others get crap, which is what I was curious about - if they actually give you anything concrete/useful to improve.

What happened to your mdapps profile? It doesn't load if I click on it.

Funny you ask. I couldn't log into it for so long because of all the server change over and what not that I stopped updating so I just changed it to 'Cnt Log In' as a joke, but lucky for you I just spent some time on it this morning that it's up to date as far as schools and dates and what not. I have some more stuff to add such as advice and impressions from schools, but I'll get to that later. So the link next to my avatar will work now.

Alright, thanks... I can keep being patient and hoping for the best...

Scheduled to interview on 3/20! Complete for what feels like 10 years! I had all but given up on my chances for an interview here. I'm very excited and can't wait!!!

Hang in there. I would assume they wouldn't keep you hanging on unless they were at the least seriously considering you!

Anybody heard post-interview lately? Also anyone have an idea what there number of acceptances is at right about now?

Anybody heard post-interview lately? Also anyone have an idea what there number of acceptances is at right about now?

When I applied last year I called the admissions office once in awhile to ask the amount of acceptances given out. They were usually very nice and gave a number or a small range.

Ditto, my friend...I think movement before May is plausible, I'm just not sure how probable and I am not sure how early it might be. I am going to check back with admissions every couple weeks to see where they are at with acceptances. The lower the number the better...a small token to hold onto during the next couple months 🙂
Have you called lately?

Guero, I am making the call today...response isn't posted to SDN until you have your synopsis on mdapps...get her done.
*settles into comfy chair with popcorn*

Y'all are cracking me up. :meanie:
