Yup. Since Thursday, I hadn't checked the portal until last night. Today, though? I've checked it twice already. LoL

Good lord I want this to be over. I'm really going to be bummed if I get put on hold, even though it's technically far better than a rejection. I'm not the most patient man in the world. In fact, I'd probably be among the least if there were a rating.
 
Just FYI this week is Spring Break in most of the Oregon school system. That may have an impact on committee action this week. Not sure whether they'll make more progress or less, I guess it really depends on the players. Probably the biggest potential impact is that your traditional one-on-one interviewer must be present at the AdCom meeting to lobby for you.

Having landed in that bottom 5th percentile two years in a row now, I would be thrilled to 'just' get on hold.

I'll repeat what I've said before on this thread... one shouldn't feel bummed about being put on post-interview hold. Annoyed and severely life-plans-inconvenienced at the ongoing agonizing waiting, sure, but don't be bummed. All being put on hold means is that you're not in the top or bottom 5-10th percentile of interviewers. It's in no way a bad place to be, the way OHSU runs their admissions pool.

We would all love to land in the top 5th percentile of interviewees that gets automatically accepted, but being sorely bummed about not getting that strikes me as being an excellent example that one could use next year for their "Tell us about a time when you didn't get something you felt you deserved..." entitlement-checking secondary essay question.

Like I said, I know being put on hold is a good thing, trust me. And it's not an entitlement issue at all. It's just that I hate being up in the air and much prefer to have plans laid out ahead of time, especially considering all that'd be involved with matriculating at this school (e.g., paying for and taking an accelerated $1200+ course at the last minute while working full time, shortening what little vacation I have before starting med school, a 2500 mile and expensive cross country move, etc.). Again, I'm just trying to vent my frustrations while I wait for my #1 to come through.

I know. I'm sorry if what I said seemed harsh, it just tends to rub me the wrong way when I hear people sniffing about being put on hold when plenty of us are desperately hoping for some of those scraps to drop in our direction.

Believe me, I truly understand about life plans and disruption. I think we're pretty much all in that boat.

Anyone who has read the past OHSU app cycle threads knows they should plan on having no answers of any kind until May 15th. Anything earlier is gravy, baby.
 
Ok bluepotato that is good haha. How many weeks out are you guys now? 7? Also maybe your adcom has not been available anyone after 2/8 hear yet?

Yes, we're 7 weeks out. Next week would be the "last week," week 8. As Dianyla stated earlier, since it's Spring Break, we may not hear anything this week. I swear, I'm going to have a seizure if that's the case. LoL

Well, it looks like we're not hearing today judging by the time-stamp on plinkw's post last week. I'm guessing we won't hear until Wed or Fri of next week. Ug-mul-ferp-a-derp.

Well at least some people should be in the office because they have interviews today and Friday. They might be waiting to do a review till they are done interviewing which is Friday.

Thanks for the update! I wasn't sure if they had anyone in the office. I wish you could go and be like, "Heeeeey, suuuuup? Uh-huh, right. Heeeeeey, you wouldn't happent to know when you're going to issue decisions on those 2/8ers, do yaaaaa? Riiiight, thanks!"

Hang in there guys, I am sure good news is coming soon. You can also look at it this way, we are one week closer to May 15th when they have to give us all a decision haha.

Yeah, but that 5/15 decision might be a spot on the WL, my worst case scenario. I can only hold out until about 5/28, which is when my local genetics class begins. So how do they tell you where you stand on the waitlist? Is it consecutively ranked like UW (e.g., you're assigned a spot from #1-150)?

You get a number and the portal updates with what number they are on. That way you can track movement and see how close you are to getting accepted.

5/28 the first day of class, or last day to drop with full refund? No harm in doin some good ol book-learnin' for a few weeks until the drop date.

Being a summer course, a few weeks is the entire class.

I just got a reply from Ms. Zook regarding the question I asked earlier in the week. As much as I wish it did, I doubt it has any bearing on whether or not we'll hear something today...

Hey guys, I'm looking for some opinions of people who have not spent their entire life growing up around OHSU. I lived and breathed OHSU/Doernbecher when I was a teen - so much so that I can get from basically any place in OHSU to another without ever going outside - and so I feel like I have an internal bias when comparing OHSU to any other school.

What I want to know is your impression of OHSU on interview/second look day when compared to other schools. You don't have to name schools, but in general, how did the facilities compare, the overall feel you got about the school, and whatever else you may want to include. If current students want to chime in about why they chose OHSU over other schools, that would be great too.

I want to get some other people's take because I'm trying to plan ahead. I'm ranked fairly high on UCF's waitlist and really loved everything about the school, so I'm trying to proactively compare the schools in case I get accepted to OHSU and UCF around May 15th (among other schools, but I think OHSU and UCF are my best shots). I don't want just 2 weeks or w/e to think about it, because at this point I honestly don't know what I would do as both schools seem excellent, but are complete polar opposites and each seem to have their pro's and con's.

Also, if you don't want to post publicly for whatever reason, please PM me as I really need some help.

Well I only interviewed at two schools because I cancelled all my other interviews after I got my OHSU invitation, but I was very impressed by the overall campus as well as the students that I met. I think the students probably made the biggest impression on me - they were very friendly, laid back and easy to talk to and they seemed genuinely happy to be at the school. I know that OHSU has a reputation for heavily considering life experience and other nonacademic factors in their admissions process and I felt that the students I met were consistent with that philosophy (which I liked).

I can't comment on the academic facilities because I didn't really get to see any of them. The two buildings where I spent most of my time there were really old and not as nice as the other place where I interviewed but I'm guessing that that's not representative of the facilities as a whole, though I can't say for sure.

To be honest I'm hoping that I'm going to be able to get a better feel for the school at the second look, if I'm lucky enough to get to go to one. My overall impression was definitely positive though. The place has a good vibe.
 
The facilities at OHSU will be updated in the coming years as they open the Life Sciences Building on the waterfront and SOM classes will be held there (according to a 2nd yr at my interview lunch).

I didn't get any information about a 2nd look in my acceptance packet. Did they already know I would go to OHSU if the classroom is in the basement with screeching chalkboards?

Are there any more second looks?
 
I interviewed 3/15. OOS, Montana resident. My husband was born and raised in Oregon and he and his family sing the praises of the school. They were shocked 8 years ago when I asked what OHSU was because I had never heard of it and they truly believe it is a household name, on par with Mayo or an Ivy league. My husband warned me that because they are a top school I might find the students to be snobby. I thought the students were very, very nice. The buildings seemed old, but I know they are building a new building, so that didn't really matter to me. Overall, I liked the school and I had 10 other interviews this year. Really, my biggest issue is that it is really expensive and the cost of living is expensive too. I liked the school, but honestly would rather not live that close to my inlaws and don't know if it's worth the huge sticker price (during our lunch, an MS1 said OHSU is in trouble for the huge debt their students incurr.)
That being said, I'm still checking portal multiple times each day and liked the feel of Portland as a city. I think I must secretly hope to get in even though I've been accepted at UW and another school. I'm often the type of girl to go with gut feelings.
Just my two cents.
 
Regarding the debt I remember looking at schools at for OOS students in Texas it was like 15k cheaper a year than an instate student at OHSU. I can't imagine having to pay the OOS price

You will get an email from Katie. There are two more second looks scheduled. One in April, and another in May. They did the one in February because there was a Friday that didn't have an interview day scheduled, so Katie decided to do one earlier than they normally do.

The classrooms are not in the basement, and they have whiteboards, not chalkboards. 🙂 Most professors (reported by MS1) use the computer and powerpoint. The one prof that we saw on the second look in February didn't have powerpoint, but he did talk a lot, and he drew on the whiteboard a lot. He also pulled out the old-school overhead projector with acetate slides that were probably made 15 years ago. But he was the exception, not the rule when it comes to professors.

Doesn't being a Montana resident qualify you for WICHE? I thought that it meant that tuition was a lot cheaper.

As for debt, OHSU is the LEAST expensive of the three schools where I was accepted. The other two are private schools, and are at least 10-20k a year more expensive. Even UA, Phoenix would have ended up being about equal to OHSU (first year in Arizona would be OOS, but could then petition to be counted as IS and pay IS tuition for the remaining three years, it would balance out to be about equal to OHSU for four years). Only LECOM-B, of all the schools where I applied, had a tuition that was significantly lower than OHSU.

I can't immagine having to pay for travel to 10 interviews. I went to five. Two were in the same trip to Florida, and two more were in Oregon. I did stay in a hotel in Lebanon the night before COMP because I wanted to go to the pre-interview pizza social the night before and didn't want to drive to Albany/Lebanon twice in two days. I was able to sleep in on the day of my OHSU interview to travel the 20 minutes to get to the school. I will probably ride the bus most days next year, which will take about an hour. 🙁 No sleeping in for me.

I am pretty sure that UW still has the WWAMI program. That would be sweet if you wanted to do that program and live in Montana still.
