What Branch are you accepted into?

Sorry my message was so messed up with typos. I haven't been accepted to a branch yet. Been on the WL for a couple months now, but they invite waitlisters to second look.. I just wish I had more than a week's notice because it costs money to fly out there.. way more this last minute. I would love to attend but not sure I can afford the trip out there. sigh. Is anyone else in the same boat? I'm surprised I just found out about this today..?

I think we all just found out today. I have TAD orders for something completely different in Quantico starting on the 5th. I was thinking of swinging up there for the day, but I'm unsure if I will be able to. The one reassuring thing is that the ADCOM won't know whether or not we attend. USUHS is still my top choice regardless.

Well, I'm not rejected yet because I just got an email yesterday telling me to go take care of body fat testing with a recruiter.
But I'm not waitlisted yet either since I didn't get an invitation to second look with all the other waitlisters yesterday.

Still in limbo. Still waiting. I'm currently in my 6th week post interview. This waiting is tough.

Well, I sent a e-mail to these people on the second look. They shouldn't send an e-mail from admissions where the first few words are "Congradulations on your...." Kinda insensitive.......

Yeah they sent a second follow-up email to clarify lol... actually when I received the call about being WL, they told me I was accepted and of course I was so happy and then he had to explain "accepted but there are no spots" ugh. Accepted means accepted in our books!!

Yeah for some reason DCA is really expensive to fly in to. I'm not even planning to fly directly, it's cheaper for me to fly back home and then just drive to USUHS. We can thank sequestration for the lack of help with transportation costs and boarding.

Well the 1st is on Monday so I hope they give out some acceptances this coming week - I would love one 🙂

Ooh I came up with a question for discussion - how does everyone feel about taking Step 1 at the end of the 4th year? This is going to be the first year they do it so incoming 2013 students will be guinea pigs for the new setup. Fire away.

i dont think you take it at the end of 4th year.... from what I saw, you take it sometime during the middle of 3rd year as opposed to during 2nd year like most other schools. the end of 4th year doesn't make any sense, as thats when you need to apply for residency, so your step 1 scores would need to be available by then....

My understanding is that this years' second year students are the first ones affected by this new schedule. Additionally, Mark is right, step 1 would be in the 3rd year. This has been a concern expressed by some people since there will be a much greater time differential between when the students study the basic sciences at the beginning of year one and when they take step 1.

The counter argument, however, is that since the didactic learning is presented in a better contextual manner that the retention will be better. I guess we will see how we'll it works when MS2 takes the test this year.

ive also heard that having some rotations under your belt is beneficial for step 1, but this might vary from person to person. i personally think that I'd rather take it right after finishing my coursework, but thats still a long way off

For the class of 2015 and beyond the Step 1 exam is currently scheduled for the end of January in the middle of your third year after pre-clerckship academics and one year of your core clerkships. I'm sure there are pros and cons, but the important thing to remember is that you are only competing with other military match applicants, most of whom are in your class and will have the same schedule as you.

oops I'm sorry - yes you are right, not 4th year!! 3rd year

I think it would be nice to have an option... I toured another school that said students can take Step 1 anywhere (i.e. go to another state, county, city, etc) if the date they wanted is not available. I'm wondering if USU would allow students to take it after 2nd year if they chose to (elsewhere).

I AM IN!

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!!!

I even called this morning to check in as I kind of had an anxious funny feeling but was told Col Saguil is out until Weds...... Ahhhhh!

and no this is not an April Fools joke! I got the call from Joan Stearman.

I think they are making more calls today! Please PM if you want more details as I don't like to post stats, etc. on the forums.

Congratulations Cinamin! I have to admit, I am incredibly jeleous. Still hoping to get some love from USUHS.
Which branch did you get accepted to?

Thank you!! PM'd you!

Will be withdrawing. Congrats to all, and you too cinamin. (for those interested, I may yet choose HPSP--though I have decided to stick with OHSU for many reasons. I loved USUHS though)

Hi everyone, I'm currently a junior in college getting ready to apply to USUHS this summer. My question is has anyone received or know anyone who received an unconditional acceptance with experimental marijuana usage? I've smoked 7 times with the last being Jan. '12. Obviously you can PM me with your answer and if you could include your stats I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time and congrats to the people who have been accepted so far.

Thanks! I think it is a tough choice but respect your decision! What branch were you?

Congrats Cinamin! I'm hoping there's a little more movement soon!

Army should have a little movement. I withdrew my acceptance about a week ago... I will be going the HPSP route instead!

Good luck to everyone at USUHS, seemed like a great school... but with my situation the HPSP/civilian medical school route was just a better fit.

Congrats! 😀 I'm still waiting to hear back about whether or not I'm even on the WL. (7 weeks post interview as of tomorrow). :lame:

I'm almost at 11 weeks and I haven't heard back. Has anyone been waiting longer?

Oh Wow! 11 weeks!? I guess I may not hear back about even being on the WL until the end of May. I guess I'll have missed the WL movement by then, and I'll be stuck without an offer here. 🙁

"Wait list applicants can be made offers through August, although most offers are tendered by the end of May." - USUHS Post-Interview Guide

Don't lose hope! I just found out I was on the wait list via snail mail. I interviewed in February so be sure you check your mail boxes!

Feb 7? That's when I interviewed. Oh God now I'm staring outside for the mailman...... 😱

Sooo I gave notice to my employer that I'll be leaving in May and also gave notice to my landlord.. wooo! My goal is to find a place near USUHS the first week of June.. hopefully I will have orders by then?

If I move my stuff on my own at any time, could I get paid back or does it have to be after a certain date?

I spoke with the MILPO office today and they weren't sure so I'm calling a different person tomorrow to find out, but if anyone knows anything, that would help! Especially if anyone has advice/experience about moving out before camp and then going to camp from the new place in MD.

side note: Good luck to all still waiting!!! If this is your top choice I definitely recommend showing your interest. They seem to be very receptive to it.

During orientation you will fill out paperwork relating to the costs of your move and will be reimbursed based on that. Your orders will come from USUHS and you will most likely commission and be attached to a local reserve unit until you begin your ODS. Orders will come out at different times based on when your ODS class begins. If you are already here then you can commission at the school.

When did you interview in Feb? I was on the last date, the 21st. I'm thinking I still have a few weeks before I hear back. *sigh*

From what I have been told is that if you move yourself prior to receiving your orders it is at your own expense. So I would definitely wait until after you receive orders. I don't know about other branches but for the Army on the forms you fill out they will only move your stuff from the address that you list on those forms. So sometimes its difficult to coordinate the move prior to OBLC. But you can always use a moving company of your choice after you get your orders and you can get reimbursed that route. Hope that helps. If you hear anything different let us know.

If you move before your orders are cut, you will not be reimbursed for that amount. The orders generally take much longer to get cut than you would think, but don't worry because they will get done eventually. Sometimes there is a tight window between when you need to move from your current location, need to go to training, and need to move into your new place. They don't make it easy on you, just an FYI

Ok thanks so much for all the responses...yeah I figure it will be like a long wait and then a sprint to get everything packed, shipped/or stored, and then find a place..

Aww 2nd look is today. Hope everyone is having fun!!

Good news: I got the call today. Wait-listed, Navy! 😱😀
Bad news: I'm in the bottom third of the (~60 person) list, and they're not sure enough people will drop to get to me. 🙁:scared:

They do expect a lot of movement over the next two months, but whether or not they go through enough people for me... only time will tell.

Edit: I interviewed on 2/21. Navy is my first choice, but I also let them note that I would accept an AF spot if it came to that.

Congrats on the WL ~ and now you know where you stand! Good luck!

Congrats on the wait list (as silly as that sounds)! I interviewed the same day, so here's hoping I hear something positive soon! (Though maybe they are slow because they are readying an AF position for me? xD)

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the second look on Friday due to prior military obligations. I was wondering if anyone who attended might have some information in regards to the army waitlist at all?

Hi again.. so I know it's kind of far in advance to look at apartments, etc. but I was perusing Craigslist to get a feel for pricing in various areas... I have come across some sketchy posts though..

for instance: http://smd.craigslist.org/apa/3724529388.html

here is another one: http://smd.craigslist.org/apa/3691784946.html

There are lots of posts similar to this one with short info but lots of pictures.. saying 3 bedrooms for 1100-1200 in silver spring, bethesda, etc.. hardwoods, upgraded kitchen. This can't be for real can it?

I have used craigslist for the past few years on the west coast so I'm hoping it's reliable on the east coast as well but a few of these posts almost seem like they could lead to scams?

thanks for the input!

Cinamin-Just based off of the pictures alone, you're likely looking at a scam for the second one (unless they have two different fridges and two different sets of marble countertops in one apartment.) I'd say call around to the different apartment complexes and start there.

The first one looks ok, second one is a bit iffy, but scams are usually pretty obvious. When I was looking for a place in DC I asked for more pictures, if I could visit, etc. One person responded with an email saying that they were out of the country and if I wanted to visit, I'd have to mail them a first month deposit and then they'd send the key. If I didn't like the place, I'd send back the key and they'd kindly return the deposit...

To be completely safe, I'd join a USUHS Class of 2017? facebook group (or stay on the lookout on this forum). People will post housing options in the next few months as a lot of students will be moving, looking for new roommates, etc.

Depending on where you're looking, 1100-1200 for a 3 bedroom is sketchy. To give you an idea: my first few years I lived in a 2 bedroom apartment in downtown Bethesda and we each paid 1400 (so about 2800 total for the 2 bedroom). Now I live in a townhouse close to school that I share with 3 other people - I pay about 1200 (I live in one of the larger rooms so a couple of my roommates pay less). I don't remember what our BAH is right now, but it's over 1600. My first apartment was one that had just been renovated so it was a bit more - you can get a studio within your BAH. I highly recommend living walking distance from school or walking distance from a red line metro stop - parking is awful, especially in the first semester when both MSIs and MSIIs are in classes.

Most apartments have discounts for military (reduced application fee or reduced first month's rent). If you need proof of your income (non-priors won't have access to mypay yet) you can talk to someone at the school and they'll send you a letter you can give them that ensures you'll have a steady income for the next several years. I forgot who it was that sent it to me.

ok cool thanks so much for the info. and yea re the craigslist posts I put up, I am pretty sure are scams.. there are a handful of similar posts like that, all with a slightly different but similar email format. Hopefully this helps someone else out!

Also thanks for the tip about getting the letter to show proof of income.

Hi All,
I haven't kept too much up with this forum since I was waitlisted (interviewed in early November), but did anyone receive an email from the Public Health Corp regarding applications? I recieved an email from Lt. Lopez because ' the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences has provided my name as one of the selected applicants'. I tried calling but had to leave a message. I haven't actually been told I was taken off the wait list at all so does anyone know what this is about?
Thanks all

sounds like your acceptance letter is coming 🙂. Is usuhs your top choice?

I just got the same email! Does this mean we're being considered for PHS? It (PHS at USUHS) was my top choice, but they emailed and told me that they were moving me to my second choice waitlist since PHS was full, so I thought that was it...

I honestly have no idea. It came as a great surprise as I hadn't even gotten any sort of email regarding my wait list placement (I got the wait list letter in march and that was it). I tried calling Lt. Lopez but had to leave a message. Doubt she would call back until Monday at the earliest but when I know anything I'll give you a heads up.

It's quiet... Too quiet... 😏

Where is everyone? Heard from admissions recently? Still chillin' on the waitlist with me? Anyone still alive out there?
