I just called to check my status and learned that (1) they received my pre-interview updates, (2) have looked at my application "multiple times," (3) they added two more interview dates in February due to high volume, and (4) final notifications [rejections] will go out "either late February or early March, so it won't be like you'll just never hear from us." 🙂 Hope this helps! :xf:

Thanks for the info. The extra interview dates give me a little more hope.

Got the hold email on Friday. Interviewed on December 15th. Congrats to those who got accepted!! Keeping my fingers crossed for next round.

What's the dress code for the dinner thing the night before? To those of you that attended, what did you wear/ what were others wearing?

Has anyone successfully sent any pre-interview updates?
Heyy...I have sent updates that seem to have helped me. I sent in a pre-interview update after being put on that "hold for interview" list and got invited for an interview about 5 days later. Interviewed 12-15-12, Accepted 1-18-13 about 10 days ago!!! OOS from Cali. Very excited!!. Also updated after my interview btw. Goodluck to everyone!!

Just wondering, how/where did you update them? I remember after I interviewed they told our group that they wouldnt be taking update letters or LOIs.

As I posted earlier, I sent mine via email and verified over phone that they were received.

This is indeed the case. The school stopped taking update letters on December 28 unfortunately.

I submitted back in September and never got an II. Here are my stats:

In state, active duty military stationed in SC
Undergrad Chemical Engineering at U of A 3.3 GPA
MS Env Engr at U of A 4.0 GPA
ME Nuclear Engr at Penn State 4.0 GPA
MCAT 33N
Volunteer/Shadowing 100+ hours in ER

I need some advice on where to improve. Is a 33N too low on the MCAT?

I just got an invite! I was caught off guard by it because I thought I was finished. I was recently rejected pre-interview by UofA Phoenix, and got the hold email from Tucson months ago.

Does anyone know how many spots are left in the class?

No, I don't think it's your mcat, as it's pretty high plus your graduate degrees and GPAs. How are your ECs?

Congrats! The same thing (pre-interview rejection at UA Phoenix) happened to me. I hope that's a good sign. Would you mind sharing or PMing your stats?

Good luck at the interview!

My only EC is the volunteering and shadowing in the ER. Should I have more than this to be competitive?

How long did you volunteer? Also, I'd imagine some leadership experience would also be helpful.

Started in June after finishing school. I was working full time and taking classes. I have plenty of leadership experience (5 years as an officer in the Navy). Is there anyway to find out if it is a bad letter?

Some schools offer opportunities to find out where you may have gone wrong. My state school, UNM, offers exit interview type sessions to those that are interested- Unless someone here knows what they do, I'd email the office admissions to find out. They're generally quick to respond to email.

I try to stay away from SDN to preserve my own sanity and minimize my neuroticism but when I saw this I wanted to share because I feel I can relate. I was an engineer as well with great grades and good mcat that was rejected previously (and still trying). After my rejections I was able to schedule meetings with faculty to review my application and what I found out is that when it comes to evaluation of applicants, academic readiness is seen differently from awareness of medicine. What i mean by that is that admissions wants to see that you've had time to really ruminate your decision and have demonstrated commitment and a very through understanding of medicine. If you can convince them of this with 100 hours of volunteering/shadowing more power to you, but I think it would be difficult.

This process can seem random at times and I think the best advice I can give is to set up meetings with admissions (anybody and everybody) and try to get individual feedback. This is difficult for most schools but there are always faculty members, former board members, etc who are happy to help people aspiring to become great doctors. Its best to get your information from the source and if you're fortunate to receive feedback take your time to digest it, make it your own, and work at improving. Stay positive and I hope this is helpful.

I echo this advice and summation. Many schools require so much volunteering to ensure those that are accepted follow through rather than change fields after earning the degree (which happens more often than you'd imagine, as seen on PBS's documentary following Harvard med students through school, residency, and afterward). Finding ex-board members is a fantastic way to get great inside info, though sometimes difficult depending on the institution. My PI happens to do interviews for Vandy and was a great source of info. Just ask around. Good luck. You definitely deserve an interview. Thanks for your service.

Sorry about the error....How many schools did you apply to?

is arizona done sending out interview invites?

I got a 25 on the MCAT, after getting a 20 the first time. my undergrad gpa is 3.7 and my grad GPA is 3.3. Hoping for the best 🙂

For those who have interviewed and did not get matched up with a student host, where did you guys stay? I'm trying to find a hotel for my interview next week but the link the school sent was not very helpful... Any input would be great! Thanks!

Just got an II- Feb 9th can't wait to meet everyone 😀

Congrats! Would you mind sharing or PMing stats? Good luck at the interview!
IS-lots of ECs and clinical exposure
U of A is my #1 school....so excited!

I would almost say your stats are too good. At least nothing to work on. Maybe your personal statement or essays need help. Keep up the hope the cycle isn't over yet.

Feb 9th, I dont know where im going to stay yet

Did anyone hear this week?? Seems odd that they didn't send any emails as I thought it happened every other week.

Any help: need a nice yet affordable place to stay near campus?

Any help: need a nice yet affordable place to stay near campus?

Most of the hotels close to campus are pretty expensive. I went cheapo and stayed at the Quality Inn, about a mile and a half from campus. It's walkable, but not really in a suit. I took a taxi to the interview. I don't remember, do they offer student hosting?

I'm looking for as cheap as I can get as long as its not a shady neighborhood or bedbugs. How'd you like the place for a one-night stay?

I really can't comprehend why you didn't get a II. Have you called or written them?

If, by some insane and in my mind unfair circumstances, you don't get in anywhere, I would try to get a job as a scribe (apply now) and figure out if you can get a bit more shadowing and bench research, though not sure if either is possible while active duty. I have heard repeatedly that Tucson likes scribes.

You can still apply DO, if you act today, and I have been encouraging friends in similar situations to do the same.

And, no, your MCAT is fine, unless its super unbalanced. If everything is over 10, even one 9, you should be good.

Did you apply Phoenix campus?

I did apply at Phoenix and interviewed. I am still waiting to hear from them though. I only applied to those two because it works for my family. Thanks for all the advice, but if I don't get in my next opportunity won't be for another 5 years. That should give me time to do some continued learning in physio/bio/ochem and build my ECs. Good luck to everyone who interviewed, this is certainly a good school.

Congrats to all those who have been accepted, and for all those who are still waiting, it's still pretty early in the game, so good news is probably only a couple weeks away 🙂

For those of you who have been accepted and know you'll be at UA COM in the fall, a facebook group has been started so we can all get to know each other in the months before classes begin! Join and let the bonding begin!
