At ASU, talking with AMSA students in Discovery 250. If you're in the crowd, stand up and wave when I take the podium. Only you and I will know why you randomly stood!!

Shoot, I was in that exact room a couple hours ago for a test. Should have stayed XD

Perhaps either Tara or interviewees/current students can shed some light on my dilemma. How friendly is Phoenix towards applicants that are the "OOS, non-traditional, high MCAT, rocky early GPA but high upward trend and high Junior/senior cumulative" type students. Basically.... how harsh is this school on people with a rough start GPA-wise? Also towards OOS older non-trads?

Thanks for any help if possible. This looks like an incredible school.

Hey, current MS1 here. Check out my mdapps. I had a rocky start gpa-wise, large upward trend, decent MCAT, etc. Also OOS and out of school for a couple of years.

Our class has a large variety of people. We have lots of nontrads, including several who are a bit older, and we also have lots of people who are directly out of undergrad. Here's our class profile: http://phoenixmed.arizona.edu/admissions/class-profiles

Wow, thank you so much, this gives me some hope. We have similar situations! Small world. WI resident here as well and awaiting word from UWSMPH. I'd love to hear your impressions of "what character they are looking for" for both schools. As it sits right now, UW and Phoenix are my top picks.

To be honest I can't say I have any special knowledge regarding what schools are looking for. I assume every school tries to build a balanced class, and I definitely love my class. Your application is what it is, so just put your best foot forward and be honest. People have different strengths, so if you have weaknesses in one area (for example, I had no research) try to emphasize how awesome you are in another area. 🙂

Our committee met on Friday and was very impressed with the caliber of students from the Sept 17 and Oct 1 visit days.

Breakdown of decisions from the first committee meeting:

26% accepted
57% hold
17% rejected

I will notify the candidates for admission (accepted) tomorrow afternoon (we moved our announcement day up by one day). Everyone else will receive an email message of your current status. Again, these announcements will occur in the afternoon, after 3:30pm.

The web-based system may take several days to update and reflect your status.

Read this..Got sweaty, feel like I have to pee. :scared:

Tara,

I was curious what they grading system will be with the new accreditation as I could not find it on the new website. It looks like in the past the Tucson and Phoenix campus have both had Pass/Fail during the first two years and then Honors/Pass/Fail during the second with the major difference being that the Tucson campus has been ranked while the Phoenix campus has not. Wondering if the Phoenix campus is going to stay the same and if there has been any further discussion of AOA.

Thanks!

Hey Tara, how many times will the committee review each app-- specifically for those of us who haven't received an interview? Is it worth updating or is it highly unlikely that we hear anything positive if we didn't receive an interview the first pass?

Thanks!

Tara,

Does being put on hold equate to being put on the wait list? Or is it more that you have yet to make a final decision on the applicant and will be re-reviewing them at a later time?

UA Phoenix Med will continue building a culture of collaboration and teamwork by retaining P/F for the first two-years and H/P/F in years three and four. We honor our graduates with the Gold Humanism in Medicine recognition, not AOA (a grade-driven recognition).

We'll make sure this is added to our website.

We typically give an application a subsequent review at least twice before the final decision is communicated. Right now, we have made only one pass at each applicant for an interview decision. It's likely we will begin our second pass within the next week, at which time we will release those who are not moving forward for a third review.

The latter; some of the "defer" applicants may be accepted in the next round, while others remain on the deferred list and eligible for the next round of offers. It is safe to assume that deferred applicants will end up on the waitlist if not offered an acceptance. Or said another way, a deferred applicant will rarely be rejected post-interview.

Hi Tara,
How many people are put on the wait-list? Also, how many people got off the wait-list and were accepted last year?

100+ and 2 pulled off last year. 5 the year before.

Thanks for replying! I have one more question. How were the 2 people pulled off chosen? As in, were all the people on the waitlist re-reviewed to choose the 2 people to be accepted, or were the people pulled off according to their number on the waitlist?

Thank you for answering my question, Tara! 🙂

I love the transparency of UA Phoenix Med. It completely takes the guess work out of the whole process.

It's going to be a very long day of class and research tomorrow while waiting for 3:30 to pass

We have an internal process that is quasi-ranking mixed with balancing the class and interest expressed from the applicants.

Good luck Blueshockey!! 🙂

I appreciate it! Good luck to all the other applicants that are waiting on a decision or who have yet to interview. I've been retaining my sanity so far, here's hoping that continues 👍

Tara your transparency is awesome and frankly makes the other schools look like they are hiding something. I hope they follow your initiative.👍

Did anyone receive any reply from the STARs program for the 10/29 interview date?

Thanks

Tara, if you are making phone calls today, are you also sending out hold and rejection notices today too?

If not, what is the timeline?

Thanks again.

Good luck to all of you! I am anxiously awaiting your joyous replies to this thread!

Arizona is in the same time as Pacific time zone (they don't observe the DST change). It is only 4:52 here right now.

I also have not heard anything. I am starting to get nervous. Too bad I don't drink alcohol. On the October 15th thread there are a lot of people that are celebrating or commiserating by becoming oblivious to the world.

Just got THE call. Tara was amazing and I'm so excited!! I love Phoenix! Hope to hear good news from the rest of SDN!

Got put on hold. Very disappointed, really thought I had a strong application and a good interview day. Feels bad man.

Accepted! Feeling very blessed. At a loss for words. I was just shocked and stuttering on the the phone with Tara.

I, too, got the hold email. Kinda bummed out. I really liked the feel of the school, and would have gone here over OHSU (my state school). All is not lost, I have been accepted at two really good DO schools already.

Congrats to all that got accepted, I wish you all the best.

Same. Crazy depressed. lol

Rejected outright 🙁 🙁 🙁

I loved everything about this school. I fully expected to be put on hold. I'm in a graduate program and they don't even want to wait for my grades? Why even interview me at all? I must have really done poorly in MMI, and I thought it went pretty well 🙁

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted and I wish everyone the best.

Sorry to hear, we are pretty similar Im doing a career change too after 18 years. Still keep up the hope being on hold doesn't equal rejected.

November 26th. I did the responsible thing, I think, and scheduled it on the 26th instead of on the 19th when my biochem midterm was. Sure wanted to interview as soon as possible though.

You'll do great on both. Can't wait to hear about it.
