"1-2-3 Tuesday will be one of our largest of the year. We look forward to making interview offers to potential members of Class #167!"

maybe all of us who have been complete for ages will finally find out!

Depends on when you interview. For the majority (if not all) of those prior to Oct 15, they will find out at some point on that day. I believe there is a PDF somewhere on the UM website listing days they offer interviews and days the committee comes together to make decisions. My guess would be after that date is when a decision is released.

At my interview day they told us to expect a wait no longer than 2 weeks for a decision, unless you interviewed before 10/15. They also said they release acceptances at 12:01 AM, while waitlist/deferral/rejections come later that morning (presumably during normal business hours).

"largest of the year" is prob like 10

Good luck to all of you waiting today- interviewed at Michigan recently and it really is an impressive program. Most notable is how much they emphasize wanting their students to be complete people, not just medical students. Would LOVE to end up here. Fingers crossed. . .

Eeeeek! Interview Invite today! My heart is racing right now.

Complete 8/16, OOS, average stats. There were two dates offered: end of November and early December.

So I know most people are discussing applying, interviewing, etc., but are there any current U-M medical students who can tell me some more about their school? I'd like to know about research opportunities and international clinical rotations if available.

From the Twitter...

"3-2-1 Thursday will be another busy day--making several interview offers today! Good luck future members of Class #167 Go Blue!"

For December interviews...

Edit: I just realized they only have 1 December interview date 😆

Can any current past students comment on the atmosphere at UMich? My current roommate went there for undergraduate and she is absolutely obsessed and full of school spirit.

I know that med students are typically a different breed, but I was just curious to know if there is much school spirit on the med campus AS WELL AS if the atmosphere is more dog-eat-dog or collaborative.

According to the schedule on the website there are two interview dates in December (so about 80 people will interview in Dec).

Oh no.....that's not good for the rest of us without any response yet

Does anyone know if Michigan looks at the full application for most everyone? Or if there is a minimum gpa/mcat combo that you have to have to be considered?

My stats are slightly above average for an accepted student (nothing to brag about) but the rest of my app is my strongpoint. I just wonder bc if there is a min mcat/gpa I have to have (like UT southwestern and their lizzy 70) that my full app might not be considered.
:/
Does anyone know if this is the case?

Tweet this morning:

"Letters of intent/interest: they have absolutely no impact in any stage of our process."

I am an M1 at Michigan and I can talk a little about these topics. I have not looked into research for myself yet, but from what I hear, the opportunities are endless. Since we are attached to an undergraduate school, any type of research is available from hard science to history. Any doctor that we ask to shadow says yes, and if you are interested in their research, I am sure they would be happy to take you onto their team if it was a good fit. But again, I have not sought any research myself. Most people do research during their first summer, either here or abroad, with the SBRP. It is a research program that provides funding for you and from what I hear is a great opportunity. Here is a link to find out more.

http://www.med.umich.edu/medstudents/student_services/research/

For international clinical rotations, I have heard that around 50% or 60% of graduates have had some type of international experience. There are many established partnerships with foreign institutions/hospitals that M4s use to do clinical rotations abroad. Some of these programs have been in place for decades. This link seems to provide a lot of information.

I plan on doing research overseas this summer through the SBRP. Here is a link for more info on that.

Hope this helps.

The atmosphere is AWESOME. I have friends at other med schools and they seem to be a little miserable right now compared to my great experience.

If you don't have maize and blue pride when you get here, you will definitely catch the Michigan bug soon after you arrive. Most of the med school class got season football tickets (our seats are really good) and we go to all of the home games together. We tailgate before the game as well. People are starting to go to hockey and basketball games now that those seasons have started. People always talk about the Michigan "family," and when you become a part of it, you feel like you are a part of something big and great. The school spirit is super strong at the med school.

As for dog-eat-dog, it couldn't be anything further from that. Collaboration abounds here. Since we are truly pass/fail the first 2 years, there is no competition whatsoever. We have a facebook page and people post helpful resources they find for other classmates to use. We also have a wiki page where classmates upload their study guides for other classmates to use. We even have access to study guides from previous classes. People form study groups and there is nothing but help going around. And this collaboration leads to great results, we rock the boards and get into great residencies.

We also do a lot together outside of school. Besides the football games, we go on food outings as a class to various restaurants around the city. There are often parties for people's birthdays. We play IM sports together (I am playing on two IM soccer teams right now made of M1s, a coed and men's team. Next month I am starting IM flag football and innertube waterpolo). Also with the facebook page, if someone is doing something (biking, blueberry picking, going to a cider mill, bar hopping, visiting a museum, seeing a movie, rock climbing, hiking, doing photography, etc.) they post about it and invite the class, and chances are at least 10 people will show up to do it with you.

As you can see, we have a ton of free time here at Michigan to explore our outside interests. Med school here is great!

THANKS SO MUCH!

I hoped that is what you would say.
I want to go here so bad! BIG TIME.

(Definitely saying something since I was born/raised in the great state of Ohio)

Has anybody else received a status update like this:

Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Your file remains "open" and eligible for additional reviews. Final decisions for all candidates will be made the first week in February. Thank you for your patience

I've been following this thread, but I don't remember seeing anyone else getting this. I got this status update in late September after being complete for around 4 weeks.

Another M1 here! I second every bit of this post! Our atmosphere is fantastic - the students are a happy, friendly, collaborative group. We share outlines, study tips, and study materials within the M1 class, and the upper classes also share their old study materials with us through an established online resource. I have seen ZERO evidence of competition/cut-throat behavior.

Also, the benefits of our flex-time quizzes cannot be understated. At Michigan, our class sequences last for one to four weeks (depending on topic), and each week ends with a quiz. It might sound daunting, but it is a great way to stay on top of the material and get regular feedback. The best part is that we get to take the quizzes whenever we want, between Friday at 5:00 pm to Sunday at 11:00 pm. We just go to the library and sign onto a computer there. Lots of students manage to quiz on Fridays, others prefer to take it easier during the week and quiz later into the weekend. Having this control over our schedules is awesome - especially for people who want to travel on the weekends, whether to visit significant others, attend conferences, or any other reason.

Some of the applicants might have noticed that the UMich Admissions Office is especially organized, friendly, and energetic - that spirit pretty much pervades the entire school! 🙂

Thanks to the current students for your input!

Does anyone know if Michigan is receptive to in-the-area emails? Is it worth it to send one?

For all of us hearing tonight/tomorrow I wish you all good luck!

I'm certainly hoping the best but preparing for the worst.:xf:

I didn't get that....still technically under review...been this way since JULY! Does this mean a silent rejection?

Absolutely floored!!!

These acceptances are so exciting to read! I can't wait for my interview this week 😀 Michigan sounds awesome.

Great job to everyone accepted!

Meanwhile, anyone who completed mid/late September get an interview invite?

Been "under review" since the beginning of August. I wish I knew what I could do to make my application more competitive... 3.6/3.76, 35, IS.

I submitted my application September 12th and received an interview invite September 25th. Don't know why I had such a quick turn around, I am OOS/non-traditional/average stats. Just the luck of the draw I guess. Interview coming up soon.

Does Michigan have primarily lecture-based or small group-based learning? I can't find this on their site for some reason.

From twitter:

"Admission team decision: will cancel at least 1 scheduled interview day. Rationale: strong applicant pool & anticipated high yield rates"

I dont understand.. how do u anticipate high yield..

1. Accepted students were especially convincing this year during their interviews that they love/would choose Michigan
2. Accepted students are not expected to receive acceptances from schools they would prefer to Michigan 😕
3. Admissions team believes they have done an especially strong job this year at selling Michigan
4. Completely arbitrary since strong applicant pool and high yield rates are actually negatively correlated

Kinda worrisome. They won't cancel days that interviewees have already signed up for, right? Just the days that have not yet been offered?

Boooo 🙁. I WANT YOU TO WANT ME MICHIGAN!

^Any of these options would do nicely.

Anyone get an II yesterday for 3-2-1 Thursday?
I sure didn't 🙁

I'm positive that they're only planning to cancel an unfilled interview day. If you've been offered an interview, they're not going to revoke that.

I'm not entirely sure how they make these calculations, but the Umich admissions office is one of the best in the country; they've been doing it for a long time and they're really good at it.

Michigan is primarily lecture-based, although these lectures are recorded and can be watched by medical students any time (at a variety of speeds: 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, and 2x). There are also intermittent small group exercises to drive home the current material in clinical vignettes, and a weekly longitudinal case group that focuses on the humanistic aspect of medicine.

Very similar situation/stats. However I'm OOS... Michigan, Y U NO LOVE ME!? Oh well... It's just making me sad... 🙁
