Rejected today by email. OOSer. I figured as much but it was worth the try. Good luck everyone else still waiting.

Rejected.as well, although it doesn't matter to me... Girl luck to you all.

Has anybody received scholarship offers here yet? Does this happen until after match? SA would be my top choice if I weren't receiving a scholarship offer to another school. : / sucks

Does anybody remember if SA ranked students or not? I know they have a non-curved letter grading system.

I don't think they said if they ranked students. I think all schools at least internally rank students. They have aoa which is kinda like a ranking of the top students but so does Baylor which is p/f. I think all tx schools seem to have aoa? I wouldn't worry about rankings really. All schools seem pretty similar. You'd prob have a slightly easier time making it into aoa at Uthscsa vs at utsw or Baylor though. For most other schools in Tx the competition is probably fairly similar. It's been my observation that most physicians in competitive specialties like derm though we're part of aoa, so that might be something to consider.

This has also been my observation. I would add that the only ranking standard for AOA membership is the top quartile of the class. It is then up to each chapter to elect a maximum of 1/6 of the graduating class from this top quartile for membership based on a culmination of additional factors. (meaning top 1/6 ranking doesn't guarantee AOA membership).

Seems that the UTHSCSA chapter elects a little over 30 students each year.

Did not interview, received rejection e-mail today.

Damn dude, two on the same day...sounds rough. I am sorry to hear man but I hope everything works out for you...honestly, I been rootin' for ya and I'm hoping to see you post some good news soon.

My rejection email is on the way, as others have mentioned before me, I really don't care one bit, just think its a little classless since we know interview season is over which therefore can only mean one thing. We don't need a generic email confirming that we are being ruthlessly rejected. Especially after a rough, stressful day...

I just started a research internship at UTHSCSA and had to get a "School of Medicine" badge today for access to the department where I'll be working...I was laughing in my head the entire time...the irony...

They did send that nice holiday card tho (office of diversity).. i thought that was classy.

I liked the school, but i did not want to take intro stats (my adv. stats was deemed unacceptable.) and i will miss the harlingen rotation option, and the river walk. 🙁

Rejected today with the longest email basically begging us not to contact them haha

Does anybody know what the research situation is like for students? How difficult is it to find research, and are stipends offered for summer research?

There are tons of opportunities to get involved in research, both formally and informally. The school sponsors and funds a bunch of summer research gigs, and they also keep an active list of faculty who are willing to take on medical students in their labs. They've got an MD with distinction in research program that can be completed within the traditional four years.

This page has a lot of specific information: http://som.uthscsa.edu/Research/

While it's not the state's flagship research institution it's definitely much closer to the UTSW/Baylor programs in both volume and impact than it is to TTech, A&M (great school--just not that research heavy), UTMB, etc. I know it's a bit dated but from 2001-2005 UTHSCSA ranked 6th in the nation in impact of clinical med research.

Thanks! I have a friend who is an MS1 at San Antonio and he said that he feels like there just isn't time for research. He says that the curriculum is set up so that there is a lot of class/study time and that he is always busy with schoolwork. Have you felt the same way?

1st semester that was definitely true. Now that we're done with anatomy lab, though, we have a lot more free afternoons. Even still, most research work will be done during summer, between MS2 and MS3, and during MS3/4 electives. But that's true everywhere. There's just not enough time to get much done during the school year of MS1/2, although if you found something that only required 3-5 hr/wk you could probably pull that off. If you're serious about taking on a major project and summer+elective months aren't enough time, then your best option is to take a year off for dedicated research.

Have any OOSers out there who interviewed but have not been accepted heard anything recently? I know a few people have been rejected but it seems like this is mostly pre-interview or IS. Just trying to see if there's still a chance out the for me...

Nope, haven't heard anything since my interview. OOS here. I know they sent out acceptances. Hoping for good news but my guess is it will be slow moving until people have AMCAS acceptances and decide where they're going to attend. Good luck.

Can any current students give some info about the clinical opportunities during MS1 and MS1? Also, is there a focus on underserved populations, and special training regarding it?

Congrats to all of you who have been accepted to UTHSCSA for the Class of 2017!! I'm a current first year student involved in recruitment/student government and when we noticed that you guys did not yet have a Facebook page going we decided to help out and get one started for you. Our class page was one of the best resources I had when I was getting ready to come here for school.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/394682467291417/

There will be some current students in the group who are available to answer any questions you may have about anything - from parking to what computers work well to what sort of extracurricular activities are popular in the area. We're really excited to have you guys join us in the fall and are eager to help make it as smooth a transition as possible!

Congrats again everyone! 🙂

Hi, I am applying fafsa for 2013 1st medical year and this is the first time I am doing it. Could anyone help me with the deadline issue. I know that I should apply it as soon as possible, but what is the general period that everyone apply? I haven't got any pre-match. So can I wait until match (Feb 1) for submitting the application so that I would know the college that I attend? Or will it be too late for the aid relative to other applicants?

I really appreciate any advise in this regard. Thank you in advance. 🙂

Not the most well versed in FAFSA matters, but I'll take a stab at it. Please, correct me if I am wrong.

You should complete the FAFSA and submit it as soon as possible regardless of whether you've been accepted anywhere or not. Every medical school in Texas will need it so it doesn't matter when you do it or where you will ultimately decide to go. When choosing schools just choose all schools that you applied to, that way no matter where you end up, they will have received your FAFSA and your financial aid won't be backed up. It doesn't cost anything to add multiple schools on your FAFSA so I would send it to all the schools you potentially have a shot at attending.

Boricua, Thank you very much for the information. You are a great help!! I just have one more question, could you please clarify?

I am confused on what schools to add. I got interviewed at 3 TX schools and 1 out-of-state school, so I should add these 4 medical schools to the application. But do I have to include the rest of TX and AMCAS med schools that I did not get invited for interview? Since the interview season in TX is done, there is no possibility that I attend those other non-invited schools. But the AMCAS interview season is still going on, so is it appropriate to add the amcas schools that I haven't got the rejection email but not the non-invited TX schools?

I really appreciate your help. Thank you very much. 🙂

Only include the schools that you interviewed and would attend. You could include the other schools on AMCAS that you didn't get an interview yet, but I only interviewed in texas so I'm not 100%. Definitely only include tx schools in which you interviewed.

My pleasure, bud 👍

I would only add the Texas schools you interviewed at, because you are right, interview season is over and unfortunately if you haven't heard back from a certain school by now, it's probably over at this point. So be realistic about the schools you may attend, and add them in. For AMCAS schools I am not sure because I did not apply out-of-state, but I just did my FAFSA recently and do not recall there being a limit to how many schools you could send it to...I also don't recall a fee or cost of any kind so if that is indeed the case, it cannot hurt to play it safe and send it to all the AMCAS schools if you think you may still interview there.

Hope that helps and wish you the absolute best this cycle!

Hey is there a Texas Match Thread? I just want to know if I can be posting with a group of people where we can all announce which school we matched with.

Boricua and TXLS11, I very much appreciate your prompt responses and great help. Thank you very much!! 🙂

thanks, you too. may sure seems a long way off...

Can anyone comment on financial aid from this school? I'm OOS and they are already giving me/us a steal of a deal, but debt is super lame. Just want to make sure I don't miss any opportunities.

You will be able to fill out a scholarship application when it gets closer to June. There isn't any guarantee that you'll receive a scholarship, but if there is one available you will be notified.

OOS students pay the in-state tuition (though you probably know this already). Financial aid will be available to cover the full cost of attendance, but they are no longer subsidized so the interest will be coming out of your pocket down the road. If you are averse to taking on any debt, unless you come from money or have made enough on your own then your options are limited. Short of the HPSP scholarship I don't really think there are many options for a "debt-free" medical education.

Best of luck to you.

Can any current students give some info about the clinical opportunities during MS1 and MS1? Also, is there a focus on underserved populations, and special training regarding it?

There are several free clinics you can volunteer at and you can shadow anytime you want, which is really easy to set up. In addition they have you paired with a physician for the entire first 2 years that you spend 1/2 a day with once a month or so. At first it's basically just shadowing but as you learn the different components of history taking and physical examination you'll start to get to do stuff and eventually possibly even "present" patients like you will during MS3/4.

All the of the free clinics serve primarily underserved populations. The school also hosts a number of outreach missions. Not exactly sure what you mean by "special training" but in the Medicine, Behavior, and Society module they discuss how to approach various patient populations like the homeless/poor, those from foreign cultures, those with HIV/other STDs, the psychologically mal-adapted, etc.

How many people can we invite to our white coat ceremony?

You get 2 tickets to the auditorium (not including yourself). A class of 220 students x 3 = 660. The auditorium capacity is 700 something. If you get there early they have a standby line and maybe ~50 people from it get to fill the left over seats. Everyone else goes to overflow rooms with large projectors showing a live stream.

I'm having trouble figuring out if I'd like going to UTHSCSA or UTMB more. They both seemed like great schools.

Anyone mind sharing why they ranked which school higher?

I ranked SA higher than UTMB. For starters I like the city of SA over Galveston. I like the new additions to University Hospital which is one of the top ranked hospitals in the nation. Should open up by early 2014. I liked the new partnership with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This deal brings along a brand new children's hospital to be built and opened by our 3rd/4th years. That deal also ruffled some of the feathers from Christus and Methodist systems it seemed... and they too will be building their own new hospitals in the med centers to be opened during our 3rd/4th years. Hopefully opportunities to round in Christus and Methodist hospitals will still remain though.

I personally like the new curriculum that SA has put out. I don't base decisions too heavily on curriculum since I've heard med students say countless times you will get the information one way or another. However, by modeling their curriculum in a more integrated style like UTMB while also shortening 2nd year a bit like Baylor (Baylor is 18 month pre-clinicals, I think SA is 20), I feel that will improve step scores. There will be growing pains with a new curriculum, but I for one like the change.

Finally just the feel and fit for the school works best for me. I'm bias since I'm a SA native, but I've seen UTHSCSA explode since I was a child growing up. The students seem to all be really cooperative and act like a big family. I love Dr. Jones and how he personally knows each student very well. The school seems to match a lot into primary care too which is something I am interested in. Overall just a better fit for me. With that being said, UTMB is a great school and I had alot of friends go there. I really enjoyed the campus and my interview day there. I think it is obvious that their step scores are so high due to the way their curriculum is set up. Go with the school that you feel fits you better.

I ended up ranking UTHSCSA #1. Super excited to go here!

Where else did you interview? What is your reasoning for ranking UTHSCSA #1?

I interviewed in Houston as well and turned down an invite to TT-Lubbock because I had already prematched to SA and the plane tickets were so expensive.

I interviewed in SA very early, back in August and really enjoyed it there. I liked the students that I met and I felt that the curriculum would be great for me.

Then after prematching at SA and assuming that would be where I was going since I hadn't heard from anyone else, Houston sent me and invite. For some reason I went into the day thinking I wasn't going to like it, but I came out really happy and thinking that I might want to go there instead of SA. But one thing that I could never get the answer to was aside from the school being in the med center, how is it better than the other schools? I know the step scores are really good and there isn't much competition between the students because of the grading scale. But what else makes it great?

I love Houston and grew up around there, but everytime I thought about ranking it above SA, I would feel a sense of doubt and that made me reconsider SA. I finally realized that I want to move to a place that, for me, may have a little less stress, less traffic, I can have a bigger apartment for less money, and I ultimately decided that if I really want to be back in houston I can apply for residency there. After I was emailing with the student that contacted me after I was accepted, I was reassured that some of the things that Houston offered, SA offered them as well.

Hopefully that makes sense. Overall, I think SA might provide me with less stressful 4 years. Traffic in Houston stresses me out lol

As I mentioned previously I am currently doing research at UTHSCSA and wanted to point out how impressive the new construction projects look. The new University Hospital looks phenomenal so far and it seems like its going to be a top notch facility to work/practice in. For anyone who is going to UTHSCSA I would definitely be excited about that. Recently, UTHSCSA also signed a contract with CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia...why philly? 😕 who knows?) and this will also bring about new and innovative sites to conduct clinical rotations and practice. I am not sure if it has been mentioned before but can anyone confirm if these new hospitals will be open by c/o 2017's 3rd/4th years?

Recently completed a fair amount of research with CHOP - The partnership sprouted from UTHSCSA administration having former ties to the institution . FWIW it's ostensibly the top peds hospital in the nation
